Topotactic Reduction‐Driven Crystal Field Excitations in Brownmillerite Manganite Thin Films

Topotactic reduction of perovskite oxides offers a powerful approach for discovering novel phenomena, such as superconducting infinite-layer nickelates and polar metallicity, and is commonly accompanied by the emergence of multiple valence states and/or complex crystal fields of transition metals. However, understanding the complex interplay between crystal chemistry, electronic structure, and physical properties at the spin- and orbital-resolved levels in these reduced systems remains elusive. Here, in this study, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), and density functional theory calculations are used to uncover topotactic metal-insulator transition and orbital-specific crystal field excitations in brownmillerite La 0.67 Ca 0.33 MnO 2.5 thin films. The Mn valence states are found to be Mn 2+ /Mn 3+ , along with their corresponding populations at octahedral and tetrahedral sites, which effectively weaken the Mn-O hybridization compared to the parent perovskite phase. As a result, La 0.67 Ca 0.33 MnO 2.5 films exhibit an antiferromagnetic insulating ground state. Moreover, by combining the RIXS measurements on selected single-valence manganites, specifically MnO, LaMnO 3 , and CaMnO 3 , with orbital- and spin-resolved density-of-states calculations, the study identifies the dd excitations of octahedrally and tetrahedrally coordinated Mn 2+ /Mn 3+ ions, directly linking the microscopic electronic structure to the macroscopic magnetic/electrical properties.

Epitaxial Sc x Al 1- x N on GaN exhibits attractive high-K dielectric properties

Epitaxial Sc x Al 1- x N thin films of ~100 nm thickness grown on metal polar GaN substrates are found to exhibit significantly enhanced relative dielectric permittivity (ε r ) values relative to AlN. ε r values of ~17–21 for Sc mole fractions of 17%–25% ( x = 0.17–0.25) measured electrically by capacitance–voltage measurements indicate that Sc x Al 1- x N has the largest relative dielectric permittivity of any existing nitride material. Since epitaxial Sc x Al 1- x N layers deposited on GaN also exhibit large polarization discontinuity, the heterojunction can exploit the in situ high-K dielectric property to extend transistor operation for power electronics and high-speed microwave applications.

Structural Analysis of Helios Filament-Wound Tanks Subjected to Internal Pressure and Cooling

A finite-element stress analysis is performed on Helios filament-wound hydrogen tanks to examine the stress field and effect of end dome geometry on the stress field. Each tank is composed of a central circular cylindrical section with either geodesic or hemispherical end domes, which have metallic polar bosses. The tanks are subjected to combined and separate internal pressure and temperature loading conditions, and the stress contributions of each loading component are examined. The tank-wall-polar-boss interfacial meridional tensile stress in the hemispherical dome is found to be approximately 27 percent lower than that in the geodesic dome. The effects of both material anisotropy and the aluminum lining on the intensities of tensile meridional stress at the tank-wall-polar-boss bonding interface are examined.

All-Metal Dual Band Circular Polarized UHF Patch Antenna

An all-metal circularly polarized UHF antenna element is presented. The patch antenna gives a wideband impedance and axial ratio bandwidth of 24% over the 0.3-0.38 GHz frequency band with 90% efficiency. The main advantage is the use of a single feed point to generate circular polarization (CP). The antenna can be used to set up a dual-band (0.3-0.32 GHz and 0.36-0.38 GHz) communication link, with an axial ratio better than 3 dB and a realized CP gain better than 8 dBiC and 10 dBiC, respectively. The interaction between the cavity walls and the patch element, results in near-field coupling and improves the impedance bandwidth as well as the axial ratio bandwidth of the antenna. Being a high gain, high aperture efficiency, low profile, light weight, and single feed point radiating element, this single patch antenna is an excellent candidate for future antenna array.

Photofabricated Wire-Grid Polarizers

Freestanding metallic grids for use as polarizers for electromagnetic radiation at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths made by simple modification of designs of freestanding square- and nearly-square cell metallic grids, according to proposal. Cross wires provide mechanical support, but distance between cross wires made greater than one wavelength so cross wires have little effect on polarizing characteristics of grid. Possible to fabricate grids commercially for frequencies up to several terahertz.

Ultrafast field-driven valley polarization of transition metal dichalcogenide quantum dots

Abstract We study theoretically the electron dynamics of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) quantum dots (QDs) in the field of an ultrashort and ultrafast circularly polarized optical pulse. The QDs have the shape of a disk and their electron systems are described within an effective model with infinite mass boundary conditions. Similar to TMDC monolayers, a circularly polarized pulse generates ultrafast valley polarization of such QDs. The dependence of the valley polarization on the size of the dot is sensitive to the dot material and, for different materials, show both monotonic increase with the dot radius and nonmonotonic behavior with a local maximum at a finite dot radius.

Effects of open circuit immersion and vertex potential on potentiodynamic polarization scans of metallic biomaterials

Abstract Electrodes made of commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) and a CoCrMo alloy are immersed at an open circuit in a phosphate buffer saline electrolyte at room temperature for different durations prior to electrochemical analyses. Open circuit potential measurements, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP) scans are used to assess the impact of the immersion time on derived property values. Stable passivation layers formed on both materials during immersion. The corrosion potentials determined from the anodic legs of CPP scans become more cathodic, and the corrosion currents decrease to lower values after longer immersion times. Measured currents indicate the layers formed on CP-Ti stabilize during forward anodic scans and persist to the vertex potential, whereas passivation breakdown occurs during anodic scans with CoCrMo with active corrosion at voltages up to the vertex potential. The characteristics of the return cathodic legs of CPP scans represent the surface conditions at the vertex potential: characteristic corrosion property values derived from the test responses represent passive surfaces on CP-Ti and leached surfaces on CoCrMo rather than intrinsic properties of those materials.

Shielding Effectiveness of Metallic Enclosures at Oblique and Arbitrary Polarizations

Shielding effectiveness of metallic enclosures with apertures when illuminated by an oblique incidence arbitrary polarized plane wave has been studied by using an efficient hybrid modal/moment technique. Shielding effectiveness of rectangular enclosures with one, two, and four apertures at multiple points inside the enclosures for various frequencies has been calculated when the illuminating source flies by the front of the enclosure. The work shows that the shielding effectiveness is seriously affected by frequency, angle of incidence and polarization of the illuminating field; the number and orientation of apertures; and the location inside the cavity. It has been shown that the usual assumption about the normal incidence being the worst-case scenario for shielding effectiveness values may not be valid when there is more than one aperture in the cavity. The paper emphasizes the need for the statistical investigation of shielding effectiveness problem of metallic enclosures with apertures.

Integrating Partial Polarization into a Metal-Ferroelectric-Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor Model

The ferroelectric channel in a Metal-Ferroelectric-Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MFSFET) can partially change its polarization when the gate voltage near the polarization threshold voltage. This causes the MFSFET Drain current to change with repeated pulses of the same gate voltage near the polarization threshold voltage. A previously developed model [11, based on the Fermi-Dirac function, assumed that for a given gate voltage and channel polarization, a sin-le Drain current value would be generated. A study has been done to characterize the effects of partial polarization on the Drain current of a MFSFET. These effects have been described mathematically and these equations have been incorporated into a more comprehensive mathematical model of the MFSFET. The model takes into account the hysteresis nature of the MFSFET and the time dependent decay as well as the effects of partial polarization. This model defines the Drain current based on calculating the degree of polarization from previous gate pulses, the present Gate voltage, and the amount of time since the last Gate volta-e pulse.

Theoretical Studies of Polar Systems near Ferroelectrics Quantum Critical Points (Final Report)

The PI has studied emergent quantum phases near polar quantum critical points. A first challenge was to develop a theoretical description of the observation that many polar materials undergo classical first-order transitions while displaying quantum criticality. The possibility of novel metallic states near polar quantum critical points was then studied; identification and characterization of a non-Fermi liquid phase was made in a multiband system. In dilute quantum critical polar metals, electronic coupling to polar energy fluctuations was shown to result in attractive electron-electron interactions and to superconductivity. A spin-phonon resonance measurement in applied magnetic field was proposed to determine the magnitude of spin-orbit mediated electron-phonon coupling; furthermore in the polar phase new field-induced phonon collective modes were identified with specific signatures for experiment. In order to keep current, the PI has also worked on other types of strongly correlated problems. With experimental groups, she has developed phenomenologies to identify and explain observed dynamical critical behaviors. The PI has studied the interplay of topology, fractionalization and deconfinement in a minimalist spin model. An emergent phase transition in a 1 + 1 frustrated spin nanotube has also been identified and characterized. The PI has also begun exploring criticality out of equilibrium, characterizing rich dynamical phases associated with photoinduced polar transitions.

A new analysis of charge transfer and polarization for ligand-metal bonding - Model studies of Al4CO and Al4NH3

The nature of the bonding of CO and NH3 ligands to Al is analyzed, and the intra-unit charge polarization and inter-unit donation for the interaction of ligands with metals are studied. The consequences of metal-to-ligand and ligand-to-metal charge transfer are separately considered by performing a constrained space orbital variation (CSOV) with the electrons of the metal member of the complex in the field of frozen ligand. The electrons of the metal atoms are then frozen in the relaxed distribution given by the CSOV SCF wave function and the ligand electrons are allowed to relax. Quantitative measures of the importance of inter-unit charge transfers and intra-unit polarization are obtained using results of SCF studies of Al4CO and Al4NH3 clusters chosen to simulate the adsorption of the ligands at an on-top side of the Al(111) surface. The electrostatic attraction of the effective dipole moments of the metal and ligand units makes an important contribution to the bond.

Coexisting structural disorder and robust spin-polarization in half-metallic FeMnVAl

We report half-metallic ferromagnets (HMFs) are one of the most promising materials in the field of spintronics due to their unique band structure, consisting of one spin subband having metallic characteristics along with another subband with semiconductor-like behavior. In this work, we report the synthesis of a novel quaternary Heusler alloy—FeMnVAl—and we have studied the structural, magnetic, transport, and electronic properties complemented with first-principles calculations. Among different possible structurally ordered arrangements, the optimal structure is identified by theoretical energy minimization. The corresponding spin-polarized band-structure calculations indicate the presence of a half-metallic ferromagnetic ground state. A detailed and careful investigation of the x-ray diffraction data, Mössbauer spectra, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra suggests the presence of site disorder between the Fe and Mn atoms in the stable ordered structure of the system. The magnetic susceptibility measurement clearly establishes a ferromagnetic-like transition below ~213 K. The Fe Mössbauer spectrometry measurements suggest that only the Mn spins could be responsible for the magnetic order, which is consistent with our theoretical calculation. Surprisingly, the density-functional-theory calculations reveal that the spin-polarization value is almost immunized (92.4% → 90.4%) from the Mn-Fe structural disorder, even when nonmagnetic Fe and moment-carrying Mn sites are entangled inseparably. The robustness of spin polarization and half-metallicity in the studied FeMnVAl compound comprising structural disorder is thus quite interesting and could provide a new direction to investigate and understand the exact role of disorders on spin polarization in this class of materials, beyond the available knowledge.

Analysis of polarization properties of shallow metallic gratings by an extended Rayleigh-Fano theory

Rayleigh-Fano theory has been extended for the purpose of calculating the polarization anomaly of a grating having shallow grooves and finite conductivity. Simple analytic formulas are derived for predicting the position and the appearance of the anomalies. Phenomenological explanations are given to the origin of the anomalies. The validity of our analysis is examined by comparing computed degree of polarization with experimental data obtained in the visible region for Al-, Ag-, and Au-coated blazed gratings.

Opposite current-induced spin polarizations in bulk-metallic Bi 2 Se 3 and bulk-insulating Bi 2 Te 2 Se topological insulator thin flakes

One of the most fundamental and exotic properties of three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TIs) is spin-momentum locking (SML) of their topological surface states (TSSs), promising for potential applications in future spintronics. However, other possible conduction channels, such as a trivial two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with strong Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and bulk-conducting states that may possess a spin Hall effect (SHE), can coexist in 3D TIs, making determining the origin of the current-induced spin polarization (CISP) difficult. Here, we directly compared the CISP between bulk-insulating Bi 2 Te 2 Se (BTS221) and bulk-metallic Bi2Se3 thin flakes using spin potentiometry. In the bulk-insulating BTS221, the observed CISP has a sign consistent with the expected helicity of the SML of the TSS, but an opposite sign to its calculated bulk spin Hall conductivity. However, compared to BTS221, an opposite CISP is observed in the bulk-metallic Bi2Se3, consistent with both the expectations of its Rashba-Edelstein effect of the band-bending induced 2DEG and bulk intrinsic spin Hall Effect (SHE). If one assumes a representative occupation of the Rashba band of 3×10 13 cm –2 in Bi 2 Se 3 with a relevant relaxation time of 100 fs, the contribution to the CISP could be more dominated by the bulk intrinsic SHE. Our results provide an electrical way to distinguish the TSS from other possible conducting channels in spin transport measurements on 3D TIs, and open ways for the potential applications in charge-spin conversion devices.
