LED Intensity Decay Particle Tracking Velocimetry

A particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) system is demonstrated that eliminates the need for expensive lasers and cameras, and encodes the particle tracks with a known intensity variation which allows for high-resolution particle velocity and directionality determination. Using a light-emitting diode (LED) as the light source significantly reduces cost and allows for eye-safe operation, in comparison to traditional laser systems. The intensity variation control is passive, being dictated by the capacitance discharge rate in the LED pulsing circuit. The decay rate can be adjusted with the LED circuit capacitors/resistors, while the duration of the decay can be adjusted with the LED trigger pulse width. Because the intensity decay illumination is controlled by the LED, a single long exposure camera image is used to acquire images of the particle streaks, and there is no need for a more complicated and costly double-pulsing camera. With the intensity coding of the light, a single-camera/ single-LED system can identify particles entering of leaving the illumination plane, but cannot discern the direction toward or away from the camera. By using a two-color system, three-dimensionality of the particle tracks can be determined.

Pulsed Energy Systems for Generating Plasmas

This paper will describe the techniques needed to electrically generate highly ionized dense plasmas for a variety of applications. The components needed in pulsed circuits are described in terms of general performance parameters currently available from commercial vendors. Examples of pulsed systems using these components are described and technical data from laboratory experiments presented. Experimental data are given for point designs, capable of multi-megawatt power levels.

Pulse-Width-to-Analog-Voltage Converter

Peak output voltage varies linearly with input-pulse duration. Circuit converts pulses of varying widths (as from sound-velocity instrumentation or tachometers) into analog voltages. Peak voltage increases in proportion to pulse width. Voltage used to drive an x-y plotter or storage oscilloscope. Pulse-width-to-voltage converter has peak output voltage that varies with duration of input pulses.

Design of a Microwave Assisted Discharge Inductive Plasma Accelerator

A new plasma accelerator concept that employs electrodeless plasma preionization and pulsed inductive acceleration is presented. Preionization is achieved through an electron cyclotron resonance discharge that produces a weakly-ionized plasma at the face of a conical theta pinch-shaped inductive coil. The presence of the preionized plasma allows for current sheet formation at lower discharge voltages than those found in other pulsed inductive accelerators. The location of an electron cyclotron resonance discharge can be controlled through the design of the applied magnetic field in the thruster. A finite-element model of the magnetic field was used as a design tool, allowing for the implementation of an arrangement of permanent magnets that yields a small volume of preionized propellant at the coil face. This allows for current sheet formation at the face of the inductive coil, minimizing the initial inductance of the pulse circuit and maximizing the potential efficiency of the new accelerator.

Design of a Microwave Assisted Discharge Inductive Plasma Accelerator

The design and construction of a thruster that employs electrodeless plasma preionization and pulsed inductive acceleration is described. Preionization is achieved through an electron cyclotron resonance discharge that produces a weakly-ionized plasma at the face of a conical theta pinch-shaped inductive coil. The presence of the preionized plasma allows for current sheet formation at lower discharge voltages than those employed in other pulsed inductive accelerators that do not employ preionization. The location of the electron cyclotron resonance discharge is controlled through the design of the applied magnetic field in the thruster. Finite element analysis shows that there is an arrangement of permanent magnets that yields a small volume of resonant magnetic field at the coil face. Preionization in the resonant zone leads to current sheet formation at the coil face, which minimizes the initial inductance of the pulse circuit and maximizes the potential electrical efficiency of the accelerator. A magnet assembly was constructed around an inductive coil to provide structural support to the selected arrangement of neodymium magnets. Measured values of the resulting magnetic field compare favorably with the finite element model.

Power supply circuit for an ion engine sequentially operated power inverters

A power supply circuit for an ion engine suitable for a spacecraft has a voltage bus having input line and a return line. The power supply circuit includes a pulse width modulation circuit. A plurality of bridge inverter circuits is coupled to the bus and the pulse width modulation circuit. The pulse width modulation circuit generates operating signals having a variable duty cycle. Each bridge inverter has a primary winding and a secondary winding. Each secondary winding is coupled to a rectifier bridge. Each secondary winding is coupled in series with another of the plurality of rectifier bridges.

Pulsed thyristor trigger control circuit

A trigger control circuit is provided for producing firing pulses for the thyristor of a thyristor control system such as a power factor controller. The control circuit overcomes thyristor triggering problems involved with the current lag associated with controlling inductive loads and utilizes a phase difference signal, already present in the power factor controller, in deriving a signal for inhibiting generation of a firing pulse until no load current is flowing from the preceding half cycle and thereby ensuring that the thyristor is triggered on during each half cycle.

Pulse mode VLSI asynchronous circuits

A new basic VLSI circuit element is presented that can be used to realize pulse mode asynchronous sequential circuits. A synthesis procedure is developed along with an unconventional state assignment procedure. Level input asynchronous sequential circuits can be realized by converting a regular flow table into a differential mode flow table, thereby allowing the new synthesis technique to be general. The new circuits tolerate 1-1 crossovers. This circuit also provides a means for state sequence detection and real time fault detection.
