Stability margin analysis of the Holos-quad microreactor design

A simplified point model of the Holos-Quad microreactor is introduced. The model is based on the point kinetics equations coupled to three heat balance equations, representing the mean temperatures of the fuel particles, the graphite moderator and the helium coolant. The differential equations are converted to the frequency domain, enabling the construction of the closed-loop reactor transfer function. Using this function the stability margins of the core design is analyzed for various power levels. It is shown that the gain margins approaches infinity, demonstrating the stability of the reactor for all power levels. The phase margin at nominal power is about 60 degrees, however it shows a non-monotonous dependence on power, with minimal value obtained for about 10% of nominal power. As power level is further increased, the phase margin also increases, demonstrating the reactor becomes more stable. This behavior may be of high importance in load-follow scenarios, where the power level of the reactor changes with time. (authors)

Stockpile Assessment (Quad Chart)

Our goal was to characterize certain aspects of shaped charges. In order to determine the pressure field created by the jet and the jet velocity, I worked with and modified simulations using CTH, a code developed at Sandia. I was able to manipulate and modify certain variables in order to observe their effects and measure the pressure and velocities at different points in the simulation.

Diode-quad bridge circuit means

A transducer and frequency discriminator circuit is described including a four-terminal circulating diode bridge, a first pair of capacitors connected in series across two terminals of the bridge, and a second pair of capacitors, or other impedance elements, connected in series across the other two terminals of the bridge. A source of balanced alternating electrical energy for energizing the circuit is coupled between the commonly connected plates of the first pair of capacitors and the commonly connected plates of the second pair of capacitors. Due to the operation of the diode bridge, the sum of the resultant charges developed on the first pair of capacitors is proportional to the relationship between the respective capacitors of the second pair, and consequently, an output voltage taken across the first pair of capacitors will be proportional to that relationship.

Performance characteristics of a buoyant quad-rotor research aircraft

Performance characteristics of a buoyant, quadrotor research aircraft, which represents a hybrid airship concept for heavy lift application, are described. Ceiling altitude and endurance for hovering at typical power levels, including partial power failure, are predicted. Climb performance at various altitude and gross weight conditions have been examined. Forward flight performance of this vehicle is illustrated in terms of typical performance parameters such as maximum speed, maximum range, and endurance, over the full range of its payload capability. Optimum payload weights have been identified which result in maximum range at sea level density altitude and constant endurance at various altitudes, both during hover and cruise flights.

Merging LANDSAT Derived Land Covers into Quad-referenced Geographic Information Systems

An approach for merging multiscene LANDSAT data bases into existing geographic information systems having 5-second or smaller cells is described. The approach uses the output from the State of Maryland's UNIVAC 1180-based LANDSAT classification program ASTEP (Algorithm Simulation Test and Evaluation) developed by NASA. The structure of the technique was designed to address the problems that emerged as part of the LANDSAT classification of the 64,000 square mile Chesapeake water shed involving twelve scenes. The removal of overlap among adjacent scenes, the crossreferencing of ground control points, and the isolation of the appropriate pixels from the LANDSAT data base for subsequent positioning into a file containing ancillary data referenced to a specific USGS 7 1/2 minute quadrangle sheet are described. Examples illustrate the clustering of classified LANDSAT pixels to define the dominant land use for each of 8,100 cells within a series of quadrangle sheets distributed over the State of Maryland. The approach uses a hard copy terminal tied to an ASTEP algorithm through telephone lines. A coordinate digitizing board for inputing the position of ground control points is also valuable, although manual measurements are possible. The approach is quite efficient and should be especially attractive for use on regional scale studies.
