Estimation of F-3 and F-4 knock-limited performance ratings for ternary and quaternary blends containing triptane or other high-antiknock aviation-fuel blending agents

Charts are presented that permit the estimation of F-3 and F-4 knock-limited performance ratings for certain ternary and quaternary fuel blends. Ratings for various ternary and quaternary blends estimated from these charts compare favorably with experimental F-3 and F-4 ratings. Because of the unusual behavior of some of the aromatic blends in the F-3 engine, the charts for aromatic-paraffinic blends are probably less accurate than the charts for purely paraffinic blends.

Survey of Portions of the Chromium-Cobalt-Nickel-Molybdenum Quaternary System at 1,200 Degrees C

A survey was made of portions of the chromium-cobalt-nickel-molybdenum quaternary system at 1,200 degrees c by means of microscopic and x-ray diffraction studies. Since the face-centered cubic (alpha) solid solutions form the matrix of almost all practically useful high-temperature alloys, the solid solubility limits of the quaternary alpha phase were determined up to 20 percent molybdenum. The component cobalt-nickel-molybdenum, chromium-cobalt-molybdenum, and chromium-nickel-molybdenum ternary systems were also studied. The survey of these systems was confined to the determination of the boundaries of the face-centered cubic (alpha) solid solutions and of the phases coexisting with alpha at 1,200 degrees c.

C.A.D. representation of ternary and quaternary phase diagrams

This work is concerned with the utilization of C.A.D. solid-modeling software for the computer representation of three-dimensional phase diagrams. The work was undertaken in two parts. First, the C.A.D. software (I-DEAS, by Structural Dynamics Research Corp.) was integrated with a variety of auxiliary Fortran 77 and I-DEAS language programs which were written specifically for the purpose of phase diagram representation. The capabilities of the resulting suite of software for three-dimensional phase diagram representation were developed and illustrated by the construction, display and manipulation of solid-model phase diagrams for a hypothetical quaternary eutectic system. The results of this work are discussed in some detail in the attached publication ('Solid-modeling: a C.A.D. Alternative for Three-dimensional Phase Diagram Representation'). Such a technique is of general applicability, having utility in both research and education. Secondly, using the C.A.D. technique, data from the literature (gleaned from some 70 separate publications), which represent experimentally determined phase boundaries, were combined to form solid-model representations of the CMS2-M2S-S ternary space diagram and the CMS2-CAS2-M2S-S quaternary liquidus projection (where C=CaO, M=MgO, A=Al2O3, and S=SiO2). These diagrams were utilized in a concurrent study of solidification in the CMAS system.

Effects of Palladium Content, Quaternary Alloying, and Thermomechanical Processing on the Behavior of Ni-Ti-Pd Shape Memory Alloys for Actuator Applications

The need for compact, solid-state actuation systems for use in the aerospace, automotive, and other transportation industries is currently driving research in high-temperature shape memory alloys (HTSMA) having transformation temperatures above 100 C. One of the basic high temperature systems under investigation to fill this need is NiTiPd. Prior work on this alloy system has focused on phase transformations and respective temperatures, no-load shape memory behavior (strain recovery), and tensile behavior for selected alloys. In addition, a few tests have been done to determine the effect of boron additions and thermomechanical treatment on the aforementioned properties. The main properties that affect the performance of a solid state actuator, namely work output, transformation strain, and permanent deformation during thermal cycling under load have mainly been neglected. There is also no consistent data representing the mechanical behavior of this alloy system over a broad range of compositions. For this thesis, ternary NiTiPd alloys containing 15 to 46 at.% palladium were processed and the transformation temperatures, basic tensile properties, and work characteristics determined. However, testing reveals that at higher levels of alloying addition, the benefit of increased transformation temperature begins to be offset by lowered work output and permanent deformation or "walking" of the alloy during thermal cycling under load. In response to this dilemma, NiTiPd alloys have been further alloyed with gold, platinum, and hafnium additions to solid solution strengthen the martensite and parent austenite phases in order to improve the thermomechanical behavior of these materials. The tensile properties, work behavior, and dimensional stability during repeated thermal cycling under load for the ternary and quaternary alloys were compared and discussed. In addition, the benefits of more advanced thermomechanical processing or training on the dimensional stability of these alloys during repeated actuation were investigated. Finally, the effect of quaternary alloying on the thermal stability of NiTiPdX alloys is determined via thermal cycling of the materials to increasing temperatures under load. It was found that solid solution additions of platinum and gold resulted in about a 30 C increase in upper use temperature compared to the baseline NiTiPd alloy, providing an added measure of over-temperature protection.

Phosphate anion-quaternary ammonium ion pair coordinated polymer membranes

Ion exchange membranes materials according to the present disclosure exhibit improved conductivity at low and intermediate relative humidity without sacrificing mechanical strength. Polymers are provided that include a backbone with one or more aryl groups, a halocarbyl group, and a halocarbyl side chain attached to the backbone, wherein the halocarbyl side chain includes a halide separated from the backbone by a hydrocarbyl chain, a hydrocarbyl ring, or combinations thereof. The halide is substituted with a tertiary amine and halide anions are then exchanged with hydroxide anions. The polymers are then contacted with phosphoric acid, which is deprotonated by the hydroxide ions, forming anions which enhance interactions with adjacent quaternary ammonium groups and induce excess phosphoric acid molecules to cluster around those quaternary ammonium groups. The membranes exhibit negligible dopant leaching even at high relative humidity.

Solid-state phase transitions of two quaternary metallic fuel alloys (U-2.5Mo-2.5Ti-5.0Zr and U-1.5Mo-1.5Ti-7.0Zr in wt. %)

This study focuses on the solid-state phase transitions of two quaternary fuel alloys for fast reactors: U-1.5Mo-1.5Ti-7.0Zr (U-MT7Z) and U-2.5Mo-2.5Ti-5.0Zr (U-MT5Z). Here, the phase transitions were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). To identify the high temperature phases, the alloys were annealed at 873K, 948K, 1023K, and 1123K (all under 72 hours). Combining those characterizations, the phase transitions are determined. In U-MT7Z, there is one phase transition observed, and it is ascribed to α + U 2 Ti → γ transition. In U-MT5Z, two transitions are found. The first transition is α → γ, while the second is U 2 Ti → γ. The γ phase onset temperature of U-MT5Z is lower than that of U-MT7Z due to the higher Mo content.

H 2 O and CO 2 Sorption in Ion-Exchange Sorbents: Distinct Interactions in Amine Versus Quaternary Ammonium Materials

This article examines how water (H₂O) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) interact with two classes of ion-exchange sorbents — a primary amine sorbent and a quaternary ammonium (QA⁺) sorbent — using calorimetry, thermal gravimetric analysis, gas analysis, and molecular modeling. Here, the QA⁺ sorbent exhibits stronger binding to both H₂O and CO₂ but also shows thermal stability limitations. Mixed-gas experiments reveal that humidity strongly influences CO₂ uptake and that moisture-driven sorbent regeneration enables cyclic moisture swing CO₂ capture, with implications for low-energy CO₂ separation from dilute gas streams.

Single and Dual-Solute Transport in Quaternary Ammonium-Functionalized Anion Exchange Membranes: Isolating the Impact of Water Volume Fraction

Membranes are essential components of photoelectrochemical CO 2 reduction cells (PEC-CRC), as they regulate solute transport and impact device efficiency. These cells are a promising approach for converting carbon dioxide into valuable chemicals. However, electrochemical reactions involve not just a single electrolyte; membrane transport typically includes multiple electrolytes. When a mixture of solutes is present, the presence of one solute in the membrane can impact the diffusion and sorption of other solutes. In complex systems where multiple solutes are diffusing simultaneously through a hydrated, dense polymer membrane, the resulting transport behavior is poorly understood. This study highlights the individual and two solute transport behavior of potassium formate, acetate, and bicarbonate ions in neutral membranes and quaternary ammonium-functionalized anion exchange membranes (AEMs) based on phenyl acrylate polymer backbones. By isolating the effect of water content, we emphasize how fixed charge density and solute-membrane interactions influence transport behavior. In neutral membranes, the diffusivity follows the order of potassium formate > potassium acetate > potassium bicarbonate. However, in AEMs, the order shifts due to changes in ion-membrane interactions, with potassium bicarbonate diffusivity surpassing that of potassium acetate. These results underscore the importance of ion exchange membranes and ion-membrane interaction in modulating transport properties, providing valuable insights for optimizing membranes in electrochemical applications.

An investigation of the phase behaviors for quaternary U-Nb/Mo-Ti-Zr metallic fuel alloys

We report quaternary fuel alloys containing U, Nb/Mo, Ti, and Zr are proposed as fuel candidates for sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs). In this work, two Nb-bearing alloys, i.e., U-NT5Z (U-2.5Nb-2.5Ti-5.0Zr in wt%) and U-NT7Z (U-1.5Nb-1.5Ti-7.0Zr in wt%), and two Mo-bearing alloys, i.e., U-MT5Z (U-2.5Mo-2.5Ti-5.0Zr in wt%) and U-MT7Z (U-1.5Mo-1.5Ti-7.0Zr in wt%) were characterized and compared. The characterization techniques were differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). DSC was performed to obtain the transition behaviors, and XRD and SEM/EDS were applied for phase identification. The results were combined to obtain the solid-state phase transitions between 500 °C and 850 °C for the alloys. It is found that the Nb-bearing alloys comprise similar phase transition behaviors as the Mo-bearing alloys. The phase transitions in U-NT5Z are a →γ at 608 °C and U 2 Ti → γ at 627 °C, which are ~40 °C higher than that of U-MT5Z. The phase transition in U-NT7Z is a → γ at 645 °C, and is 23 °C higher than that of U-MT7Z.

Quaternary Ammonium-Functionalized Poly(Arylene Ether Sulfone) Random Copolymers for Direct Air Capture

Direct air capture (DAC) is a promising tool for reducing CO 2 concentrations in the atmosphere and fighting climate change. We synthesized a series of quaternary ammonium (QA) functionalized poly(arylene ether sulfone) copolymers with varying mole fractions of charge content and demonstrated their potential as sorbents for DAC. Molecular weight analysis determined high monomer conversion was achieved in <6 h and relatively high molecular weights for all copolymer compositions. Thermal analysis revealed all polymers had degradation temperatures >240 °C and a single glass transition temperature (T g ); the T g decreased with an increase in ion exchange capacity (IEC). Fractional free volume and water uptake percentage increased and water contact angle decreased with the number of QA sites when compared to a neutral, commercially available polysulfone (Udel® P-1700 PSU). Next, the novel series of ammonium-functionalized copolymers exhibited a moisture-mediated capture and release of atmospheric CO 2 . When exposed to air containing 30% relative humidity the polymers captured CO 2 and the capacity increased with the IEC. When the relative humidity was increased to 95% the samples released the CO 2 . This study demonstrates a promising CO 2 DAC sorbent and highlights the possibility for continuous DAC with purpose-built free-standing membranes.

Investigating Silver Nanoparticle Interactions with Quaternary Ammonium Functionalized Triblock Copolymers and Their Effect on Midblock Crystallinity

Interactions between silver nanoparticles and a cationic triblock copolymer significantly alter bulk material properties and can be tuned by functionalizing the polymer with different quaternary ammonium cations (QACs). In this work, poly-chloromethylstyrene-b-polycyclooctene-b-polychloromethylstyrene (PCMS-b-PCOE-b-PCMS) was quaternized with either methylpiperidinium (MPRD) or trimethylammonium (TMA). The surface interacting groups were identified using FT-IR to be the phenyl rings, the QACs from the outer blocks, and vinyl groups from the PCOE midblock. Changes in thermal characteristics and crystallinity were highly dependent on the QAC, uncovering differences in the nature of the interactions between silver and TMA or MPRD. Interactions induced by TMA greatly hinder crystalline domain formation and give rise to a higher water content, while MPRD promotes certain crystalline orientations and provides a greater degree of crystallinity with a lower water content. In this work, our findings demonstrate that bulk polymer characteristics can be tuned, a highly desirable attribute for many nanocomposite materials.

Impact of Quaternary Pumped Storage Hydropower on Frequency Response of U.S. Western Interconnection with High Renewable Penetrations

As renewable penetration increases in the United States, maintaining stability and reliability of low-inertia power grid by providing sufficient frequency control capability becomes a challenge. Advanced pumped storage hydro technologies (APSH) will be expected to play an important role for future grid as not only an energy supplier, but also as an ancillary services provider. This paper studies the impact of using quaternary pumped storage hydropower (Q-PSH), as one of the newly proposed APSH technology, to provide primary frequency response. To quantify the impact of Q-PSH on frequency response of the U.S. Western Interconnection, a user-defined dynamic model of Q-PSH is developed on the GE Positive Sequence Load Flow (PSLF) platform and is implemented in a set of detailed U.S. Western Electricity Coordination Council (WECC) planning cases in which renewable penetration levels are 20%, 40%, 60% and 80%. Simulation results show that Q-PSH can help improve frequency nadir and settling frequency comparing to the conventional PSH.

The Nature of Quaternary Climate Change

Dynamic interactions between atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere, driven by solar energy and modulated by atmospheric greenhouse gasses, volcanism, and plate tectonics produce substantial variations in Earth's climate over geologic time. Major Quaternary drivers of climate change include variations in Earth's orbital cycles, global temperature, natural atmospheric greenhouse gasses, and continental ice mass. Multiple abrupt climate perturbations with onsets of a century to decades have also occurred. Since the 1970s, geologically unprecedented rising levels of anthropogenic greenhouse gasses from fossil fuel combustion, industry, and agriculture have become the dominant contributors to rising global temperature, glacier and ice sheet losses, and sea level rise.

Few‐Unit‐Cell MFI Zeolite Synthesized using a Simple Di‐quaternary Ammonium Structure‐Directing Agent

Abstract Synthesis of a pentasil‐type zeolite with ultra‐small few‐unit‐cell crystalline domains, which we call FDP (few‐unit‐cell crystalline domain pentasil), is reported. FDP is made using bis‐1,5(tributyl ammonium) pentamethylene cations as structure directing agent (SDA). This di‐quaternary ammonium SDA combines butyl ammonium, in place of the one commonly used for MFI synthesis, propyl ammonium, and a five‐carbon nitrogen‐connecting chain, in place of the six‐carbon connecting chain SDAs that are known to fit well within the MFI pores. X‐ray diffraction analysis and electron microscopy imaging of FDP indicate ca. 10 nm crystalline domains organized in hierarchical micro‐/meso‐porous aggregates exhibiting mesoscopic order with an aggregate particle size up to ca. 5 μm. Al and Sn can be incorporated into the FDP zeolite framework to produce active and selective methanol‐to‐hydrocarbon and glucose isomerization catalysts, respectively.

Synthesis, Structural Characterization and Chemical Bonding of Sr 7 Li 6 Sn 12 and its Quaternary Derivatives with Eu and Alkaline Earth Metal (Mg, Ca, Ba) Substitutions. A Tale of Seven Li‐Containing Stannides and Two Complex Crystal Structures

In this paper, we discuss the synthesis and the structural characterization of the new ternary compound Sr 7 Li 6 Sn 12 and its six quaternary derivatives, where alkaline earth metals (Ca, Mg, Ba) and the rare earth metal Eu are substituted, yielding crystalline phases of monoclinic or orthorhombic symmetry. The title compounds were synthesized via high‐temperature solid‐state reactions of the corresponding elements. The crystal structures were determined by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction methods. The (Sr,Ca) 7 Li 6 Sn 12 and Eu 7 (Mg,Li) 6 Sn 12 phases represent a new structure type (space group P 2/ m , No. 10) while Sr 7 Li 6 Sn 12 and the rest of the title phases crystallize in the orthorhombic base‐centered space group Cmmm (No. 65) which is similar to the Eu 7 Li 8– x Sn 10+ x ( x ≈ 2.0) phase with the Ce 7 Li 8 Ge 10 structure type (Pearson code oC 50). Careful examination of the resulting structures shows intricate disordering between Li and Sn atoms, which is governed by the total number of valence electrons. The discussion of experimental results is also supported by DFT electronic structure calculations.
