Monopropellant hydrazine resistojet: Data correlation

The design, development, and testing of an engineering model nominal 20-millipound thrust monopropellant hydrazine resistojet program is divided into six basic tasks. Included in these tasks are analyses, design, test, and data correlation of the electrothermal hydrazine thruster (EHT). A brief summary is provided of the analyses conducted for the EHT and the design of the engineering model thruster. Some of the results of the engineering model tests are then compared with the analytical performance models generated early in the program.

Monopropellant hydrazine resistojet: Flight application design

The design, development, and testing of an engineering model nominal 20-millipound thrust monopropellant hydrazine resistojet program is directed toward the advanced development of an electrothermal hydrazine thruster (EHT). The EHT decomposes hydrazine thermally and expands the decomposition products through a nozzle to provide the impulse necessary to fulfill spacecraft propulsive requirements. The thruster is capable of operation at pulse widths from 0.050 second to steady state and delivers specific impulse values up to about 230 seconds depending on the duty cycle. The program is comprised of six tasks including analyses, the generation of specifications and other documentation, design, fabrication and test, data correlation, and recommendations for the design of flight units.

(abstract) An Assessment of Electric Propulsion Research, Development, and Application in the United States

This paper will discuss the development of Electric Propulsion technology in the U.S. from the 1960's to the present. It will summarize the various activities related to arcjets, resistojets, pulsed plasma thrustors, magneto-plasma-dynamic thrustors, ion engines, and more recently the evaluation of Hall effect thrustors of the SPT or Anode Layer type developed in Russia. Also, demonstration test flight and actual mission applications will be summarized. Finally, the future application of electric propulsion to near-term commercial communications satellites and planetary missions will be projected. This history is rich in diversity, and has involved a succession of types of thrustors, propellants, and electric power sources. With the recent use of arcjets on commercial communication satellites and the flight tests of ion engines for this application, it appears that electric propulsion is finally on the verge of wide spread application.

Monopropellant hydrazine resistoject: Engineering model fabrication and test task

The monopropellant hydrazine resistojet, termed the electrothermal hydrazine thruster (EHT) by TRW systems, thermally decomposes anhydrous hydrazine propellant to produce a high-temperature, low-molecular-weight gas for expulsion through a propulsive nozzle. The EHT developed for this program required about 3-5 watts of electrical power and produced 0.020 to 0.070 pound of thrust over the inlet pressure range of 100 to 400 psia. The thruster was designed for both pulsed and steady state operation. A summary of the GSFC original requirements and GSFC modified requirements, and the performance of the engineering model EHT is given. The experimental program leading to the engineering model EHT design, modifications necessary to achieve the required thruster life capability, and the results of the life test prgram. Other facets of the program, including analyses, preliminary design, specifications, data correlation, and recommendations for a flight model are discussed.

A comparison of potential electric propulsion systems for orbit transfer

Electric propulsion concepts are compared on the basis of trip time for the low earth orbit (LEO) to geosynchronous earth orbit (GEO) mission. Resistojet, arcjet, magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD), pulsed inductive, and ion engine thruster concepts are included. The optimum (minimum trip time) value of specific impulse is found to be dependent upon the specific mission and system being considered. As expected, the devices which can deliver good efficiency at low specific impulses promise the fastest trip times. The solution for trip time and propellant mass for the constant power, continuous low acceleration orbit transfer problem (one way and round trip) is presented in nomograph form. The influences of mission Delta V, thruster efficiency, specific impulse, power, power and propulsion system mass, and payload mass are clearly illustrated.

Embodiment design for a multipropellant resistojet

This document presents the design of a multipropellant resistojet to use as an auxiliary propulsion system on the Space Station. Such a system is necessary to counteract atmospheric drag effects encountered by the Station in its orbit. NASA specifications are strictly followed with emphasis on reliability, operating life, multipropellant capability, and exhaust emission control. Several design variants are considered, and the final solution is a resistojet with an electronic pressure regulator, variable control, an internal flow heater, and a conical nozzle. To construct the resistojet, the important components are resolved independently and then integrated with secondary units. The document also includes engineering drawings of the final design with assembly instructions. Before final utilization, a prototype testing is recommended to uncover possible problems.

Electric propulsion status and development plans - NASA programs

The current status of the NASA auxiliary and primary electric propulsion programs is reviewed. Plans for continuation of these programs and future target goals are also outlined. In auxiliary propulsion, progress on the ion engine flight experiment for the Application Technology Satellite (ATS)-F launch in 1974 to demonstrate North-South station keeping capability is reviewed. In addition, work on small pulsed plasma thrusters and hydrazine resistojets for attitude control applications are also described. In primary propulsion, the effort aimed at demonstrating the technology for solar electric propulsion is presented.

Space transportation systems, 1980-2000

An overview of projected space transportation systems for the 1980-2000 period is presented. Methods for meeting the requirements in that area are documented through a description of the Space Shuttle and its current upper stages, reusable transfer vehicles, Shuttle uprating, fully reusable and single-stage transports, heavy lift vehicles, and advanced vehicles for orbital transfer and lunar landing. The structure of the liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen boosters, cryogenic propellants, whose main propulsion system is a derivative of the RL-10 engine used in the Centaur launch, and mixed mode propulsion engine is also described, as is the flyback booster concept and such related issues as propellants and rocket engines, staging velocity, configuration shape, and whether it should be manned or unmanned. Especially noted are proposed propulsion systems going beyond the present Shuttle such as the nuclear and electric propulsion concepts, the resistojet, using liquid hydrogen, ion thruster, using argon, magnetoplasmadynamic thrusters, solar thermal rocket, and solar sail concept where the basic idea is to use a 'sail' of thin reflective material to generate a net force by reflection of solar radiation.

Theoretical study on the effect of the design of small (milli-Newton) thruster jets on molecular contamination for the space station

The self-induced molecular contamination around the space station could have adverse effects on space station components (for example solar panels) as well as scientific experiments that might be done on or near the space station. Aerospace engineers need to design a space station (SS) propulsion system that keeps the SS in a stable orbit and at the same time does not allow the propellant gases to interfere with the experiments of the user. One scenario that might accomplish the above requirements is to use an electrothermal propulsion system, resistojet, that will thrust continuously in the hundreds of milli-Newton range which will provide a constant altitude for the SS with a low g environment. As a first attempt to understand the contamination from such a propulsion system, a point source model was developed. The numerical results of the point source model are given. Number column densities for CO2 are presented as a function of direction of observation (line of sight), temperature of the exit gas, and mean exit velocity. All the results are for a constant exhaust rate of 5,000 kg/year. In addition, a mathematical model to study the effect of nozzle design on the induced molecular environment around the space station produced by simple gas propellants is described. The mathematical model would allow one to follow the expansion of the gas from the throat of a nozzle to the nozzle exit plane and then into the space external to the nozzle.
