Stochastic density functional theory combined with Langevin dynamics for warm dense matter

Here, this study overviews and extends a recently developed stochastic finite-temperature Kohn-Sham density functional theory to study warm dense matter using Langevin dynamics, specifically under periodic boundary conditions. The method's algorithmic complexity exhibits nearly linear scaling with system size and is inversely proportional to the temperature. Additionally, a linear-scaling stochastic approach is introduced to assess the Kubo-Greenwood conductivity, demonstrating exceptional stability for dc conductivity. Utilizing the developed tools, we investigate the equation of state, radial distribution, and electronic conductivity of hydrogen at a temperature of 30 000 K. As for the radial distribution functions, we reveal a transition of hydrogen from gaslike to liquidlike behavior as its density exceeds 4 g/cm 3 . As for the electronic conductivity as a function of the density, we identified a remarkable isosbestic point at frequencies around 7 eV, which may be an additional signature of a gas-liquid transition in hydrogen at 30 000 K.

Non-Refrigerated Warehouse Design Guide [Slides]

Warehouses typically have a low energy use relative to their floor area. This make warehouses ideal to install solar panels and offset on-site energy use and have a surplus of energy if roof area is maximized. This surplus can be used to provide things like grid services or charge electric vehicle fleets. This document is intended to provide owners and operators of warehouse information on designing efficient/decarbonized warehouses and maximize on-site generation. The information here references outside publications to provide specific guidance, such as the ASHRAE Advanced Energy Design Guides, but tailors the information specifically to warehouses. This guide provides owners a better understanding of warehouse design as well as more specific information for themselves or outside designers to reference.

Driving Affordable Decarbonization: Inclusive Utility Program Designs for Disadvantaged Communities

Our research team worked with 17 utility partners from various U.S. regions to study current utility program practices. We identified the key characteristics of these programs and the challenges and opportunities in implementing them. Through our research, we provide a pragmatic, design-oriented, and customer-centered perspective for effective program design and implementation. We identify 13 successful characteristics of program design that may be considered by utility partners.

Addressing Rising Energy Demand Through Innovation

The U.S. is facing a significant increase in energy demand, driven by AI advancements, the rapid expansion of data centers, manufacturing and industrial growth, and the electrification of transportation and buildings. Buildings alone account for approximately 75% of U.S. electricity consumption and 40% of total energy use. To address these challenges, NLR leverages its state-of-the-art research facilities, advanced energy modeling, hardware-in-the-loop emulation, and real-world demonstrations to provide data-driven insights that de-risk emerging energy solutions, increase efficiency and demand flexibility, optimize grid controls, and identify vulnerabilities to enhance energy security. This presentation will highlight our research ecosystem and its role in supporting a more reliable, affordable, and adaptive energy infrastructure in the face of accelerating demand.

Laboratory Measurements of n >= 3 K-shell Transition Energies of Sulfur Ions from F-like S viii to Li-like S xiv

Inner-shell transitions are ubiquitous in nonequilibrium collisionally ionized plasmas, such as supernova remnants, and in photoionized plasmas, such as outflows from active galactic nuclei and X-ray binaries. Inner-shell X-ray emission can help determine key parameters of these systems, such as ionization time, τ, and ionization parameter, ξ. Despite their importance, only theoretical inner-shell transition energies are available for many ions. To provide experimental benchmarks, we have measured the dominant n → 1 K-shell transitions of sulfur ions where n ≥ 3 from Li-like S xiv to F-like S viii using LLNL’s SuperEBIT electron beam ion trap and the NASA/GSFC EBIT Calorimeter Spectrometer (ECS). We identify over 30 spectral features and measure their energies with uncertainties in the ∼0.1–1 eV range. We compare these results to Flexible Atomic Code (FAC) and multireference Møller–Plesset (MR-MP) calculations and find differences between theory and experiment of ∼1 eV for FAC and <0.5 eV for most MR-MP calculations. We also compare these results to two widely used atomic databases, AtomDB and CHIANTI, and find discrepancies as high as 7 eV. Furthermore, many transitions are missing from these databases despite being prominent in our data.

Process (state) tomography provides complete information of a quantum system’s evolution(wavefunction) under a potentially noisy channel, from which important metrics such as process or gate (state) fidelities can be determined, which are used to benchmark a system.
