Ion cyclotron resonance studies of some reactions of N/+/ ions

Product distributions and rate constants for the reactions of ground-state N(+) ions with CO, NO, CO2, and CH4 were measured. Rate constants were obtained using ion-cyclotron-resonance trapped-ion methods, and product distributions were obtained using a tandem (Dempster-ICR) mass spectrometer. Rapid nitrogen isotope exchange was also observed in N(+)-N2 collisions.

Search for the high-spin members of the α : 2 n : α band in 10 Be

Clustering plays an important role in the structure of 10 Be. Exotic molecular-like configurations, such as α:2n:α, have been suggested at relatively low excitation energies. To search for the high-spin states that may belong to the molecular-like α:2n:α configuration in 10 Be. Measuring excitation functions for 6 He + α scattering, populating states in the excitation energy range from 4.5 MeV to 8 MeV in 10 Be using a 6 He rare-isotope beam and a thick helium gas target. No new excited states in 10 Be have been observed. Stringent limitation on the possible degree of a-clustering of the hypothetical yrast 6 + state has been obtained. Here, the high-spin members of the α:2n:α molecular-like rotational band configuration, that is considered to have a 0 + bandhead at 6.18 MeV, either do not exist or have small overlap with the 6 He(g.s.)+α channel.

Automated Resonance Fitting for Nuclear Data Evaluation

Global and national efforts to deliver high-quality nuclear data to users have a wide-ranging impact, affecting applications in national security, reactor operations, basic science, medicine, and more. Cross section evaluation is a major part of this effort, combining theory and experimentation to produce recommended values and uncertainties for reaction probabilities. Resonance region evaluation is a specialized type of nuclear data evaluation that can require significant manual effort and months of time from expert scientists. In this article, non-convex non-linear optimization methods are combined with concepts of inferential statistics to infer a resonance model from experimental data in an automated manner that is not dependent on prior evaluation(s). This methodology aims to enhance the workflow of a resonance evaluator by minimizing time, effort, and the potential for bias from prior assumptions, while enhancing reproducibility and documentation, thereby addressing well-known challenges in the field.

Novel machine-learning method for spin classification of neutron resonances

The performance of nuclear reactors and other nuclear systems depends on a precise understanding of the neutron interaction cross sections for materials used in these systems. These cross sections exhibit resonant structure whose shape is determined in part by the angular-momentum quantum numbers of the resonances. The correct assignment of the quantum numbers of neutron resonances is, therefore, paramount. In this project, we apply machine learning to automate the quantum number assignments using only the resonances' energies and widths and not relying on detailed transmission or capture measurements. The classifier used for quantum number assignment is trained using stochastically generated resonance sequences whose distributions mimic those of real data. Here we explore the use of several physics-motivated features for training our classifier. These features amount to out-of-distribution tests of a given resonance's widths and resonance-pair spacings. We pay special attention to situations where either capture widths cannot be trusted for classification purposes or where there is insufficient information to classify resonances by the total spin J. We demonstrate the efficacy of our classification approach using simulated and actual 52 Cr resonance data.

A flash photolysis-resonance fluorescence kinetics study of the reaction S/3P/ + OCS

Using the technique of flash photolysis-resonance fluorescence, the reaction of ground-state atomic sulfur with carbonyl sulfide has been investigated over the temperature range from 233 to 445 K. Over this temperature range, the experimental data were fitted to an Arrhenius equation of the form k sub 1 = (1.52 plus or minus 0.20) x 10 to the minus 12th power exp(-3.63 plus or minus 0.12 kcal/mol/RT) cu cm/molecule/sec. A comparison of these results with previous investigations on this reaction system is presented.

Noniterative finite amplitude methods for E 1 and M 1 giant resonances

The finite amplitude method (FAM) is a very efficient approach for solving the fully self-consistent random-phase approximation (RPA) equations. We use FAM to rederive the RPA matrices for Skyrme functionals, calculate the electric dipole ( E 1) and the magnetic dipole ( M 1) giant resonances, and compare the results with available experimental and evaluated data. For the E 1 transitions in heavy nuclei, the calculations reproduce well the resonance energy of the photoabsorption cross sections. In the case of M 1 transitions, we show that the residual interaction does not affect the transition strength of double-magic nuclei, which suggests that the spin terms in the Skyrme force currently neglected in the present computation could improve the agreement between FAM and experimental data.

Reexamination of isoscalar giant resonances in 12 C and 93 Nb through 6 Li scattering

Inelastic Li 6 scattering at 100 MeV/u on C 12 and Nb 93 has been measured with the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden. The magnetic-rigidity settings of the spectrometer covered excitation energies from 10 to 40 MeV and scattering angles in the range 0 ° < θ lab. < 2 ° . The isoscalar giant monopole resonance was selectively excited in the present data. Measurements free of instrumental background and the very favorable resonance-to-continuum ratio of Li 6 scattering allowed for precise determination of the E 0 strengths in C 12 and Nb 93 . Additionally, it was found that the monopole strength in C 12 exhausts 52 ± 3 (stat.) ± 8 (sys.) % of the energy-weighted sum rule (EWSR), which is considerably higher than results from previous α -scattering experiments. The monopole strength in Nb 93 exhausts 92 ± 4 (stat.) ± 10 (sys.) % of the EWSR, and it is consistent with measurements of nuclei with mass number of A ≈ 90 . Such comparison indicates that the isoscalar giant monopole resonance distributions in these nuclei are very similar, and no influence due to nuclear structure was observed.

Electron spin resonance study of thermal instability reactions in jet fuels

Free radicals were studied by electron spin resonance (ESR) using model compounds that are representative of constituents of jet fuels. Radical formation was initiated with peroxides and hydroperoxides by using UV photolysis at and near room temperature and thermal initiation at higher temperatures. Both oxygen free and air saturated systems were studied. N-Dodecane was frequently used as a solvent, and a mixture of n-dodecyl radicals was made with a peroxide initiator in n-dodecane (free of oxygen) thermally at 212 C and photolytically at room temperature. Hydrogen abstraction from the 3,4,5 and 6-positions gives radicals that are sufficiently alike that their spectra are essentially superimposed. The radical formed by abstract of hydrogen from the 2-position gives a different spectrum. ESR parameters for these radicals were measured. The radical formed by abstraction of a primary hydrogen was not observed. Similar radicals are formed from n-decane. A variety of exploratory experiments were carried out with systems that give free radical spectra to which was added small amounts of 2,5-dimethylpyrrole.

Investigation of the isoscalar response of 24 Mg to 6 Li scattering

24 Mg is a strongly deformed nucleus in the ground state. Deformation effects can be observed in the structure of the isoscalar giant monopole and quadrupole resonances. 24 Mg is also a nucleus that is well known to present different types of cluster-oscillation modes. Both giant resonances and cluster states are strongly populated by isoscalar transitions. To extract the E0, E1, and E2 transition strengths via 6 Li scattering. The 6 Li probe is a powerful tool for investigating the isoscalar nuclear response with a very favorable ratio of resonance-to-continuum background. Double-differential cross sections of 6 Li inelastic scattering, at the beam energy of 100 MeV/u, were measured in the excitation-energy range 10 – 40 MeV and scattering angles 0 - 3°. A multipole-decomposition analysis was performed for extracting the isoscalar E0 , E1, and E2 strength distributions. Results: The extracted multipole strengths were compared with predictions from consistent quasiparticle random phase approximation calculations. The theoretical predictions are in fair agreement with the experimental data. The E0 strength was also compared with results from antisymmetrized molecular dynamics calculations found in the literature. A few peaks in the experimental data might be associated with clustering in 24 Mg. Ground-state deformation effects were observed in the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) and isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance (ISGQR) distributions. The ISGMR strength is split in two peaks around 19 and 28 MeV. The ISGQR exhibits a pronounced peak at 20 MeV with a broadening at the low-energy region, similar to predictions from microscopic calculations. Signatures of excitation of cluster states were observed in the E0 response. Further studies including particle-decay measurements will be required to confirm the nature of the observed peaks.

Exclusive π 0 p electroproduction off protons in the resonance region at photon virtualities 0.4 GeV 2 ≤ Q 2 ≤ 1 GeV 2

The limited electroproduction process e p → e ' p ' π 0 was measured in the range of photon virtualities Q 2 = 0.4 – 1.0 GeV 2 and the invariant mass range of the p π 0 system of W = 1.1 – 1.8 GeV. These kinematics are covered in exclusive π 0 electroproduction off the proton with nearly complete angular coverage in the p π 0 center-of-mass system and with high statistical accuracy. Nearly 36 000 cross-section points were measured, and the structure functions σ T + ε σ L , σ L T , and σ T T , were extracted via fitting the φ π 0 dependence of the cross section. A Legendre polynomial expansion analysis demonstrates the sensitivity of our data to high-lying N * and Δ * resonances with M > 1.6 GeV. As part of a broad effort to determine the electrocouplings of the N * and Δ * resonances using both single- and double-pion electroproduction, this dataset is key for the reliable extraction of the high-lying resonance electrocouplings from the combined isospin analysis of the N π and π + π - p channels.

New energy for the 133-keV resonance in the 23 Na(p,γ) 24 Mg reaction and its impact on nucleosynthesis in globular clusters

Globular cluster stars exhibit star-to-star anticorrelations between oxygen and sodium in their atmospheres. An improved description of the sodium-destroying 23 Na +p reaction rates is essential to understanding these observations. We present an energy analysis of 24 Mg states based on a new measurement of the 23 Na( 3 He, d) 24 Mg reaction. A key resonance in 23 Na(p, γ) 24 Mg is found to be at $E$ $^{c.m.}_{r}$ = 133(3) keV, 5 keV lower than previously adopted. This finding has a dramatic effect on the 23 Na(p, γ) 24 Mg reaction rate, increasing it by a factor of 2 for the recommended rate. Furthermore, the nucleosynthesis impact of this change is investigated.

Flash photolysis resonance fluorescence investigation of the reaction of Cl/2P/ atoms with ClONO2

Rate constants for the removal of Cl(2P) atoms by homogeneous gas phase reaction with ClONO2 were measured using the flash photolysis resonance fluorescence technique at 224, 250, and 273 K. The values obtained have been used to derive the above Arrhenius equation. The uncertainties expressed are 95% confidence limits obtained using the statistical standard deviation of the individual rate constants plus a 15% additional estimated uncertainty attributed to difficulties in chlorine nitrate concentration measurements. The results indicate that destruction of chlorine nitrate by reaction with chlorine atoms is perhaps the least important of the atmospheric reactive channels, and is at least three orders of magnitude slower than calculated photodissociation rates at all stratospheric altitudes.

Search for the NΔ resonance in the 𝛾𝑑 → 𝑑𝜋 +𝜋 − reaction

A dibaryon which is an object with baryon number B = 2 has been studied for a long time. Dyson and Xuong classified non-strangeness dibaryon states based on SU(6) symmetries in 1960?s. In the framework, the deuteron is classified as one of the sextet states of dibaryons. Although dibaryon have been an interesting subject of research for a long time, most of the experimental studies up to the early 2000?s were unsuccessful. The CELCIUS/WASA collaboration reported this state via the double-pionic fusion reaction (?= ! 3c0c0) in 2009. Thereafter, the WASA-at-COSY collaboration revealed properties of the isoscaler resonance state via the ?= ! 3c0c0 reaction in 2011. The dibaryon resonance state with isospin ? = 0 and spin ( = 3 thought to be a ?03 which was predicted by Dyson and Xuong at 2.35 GeV?22 with a configuration of ??. The reported mass and width of that state were 2?37 GeV?22 and 0?07 GeV?22, espectively. The mass was ?0?08 GeV?22 smaller than that of 2?, the width was narrower than that of single ?. This surprising result made dibaryon study come back into the limelight. ?12 is one of the dibaryon states classified by Dyson and Xuong with isospin ? = 1, spin ( = 2. This state can be regarded as an s-wave #? resonance. ?12 is an interesting state from the point of view of the possibilities of existence as an internal structure of ?03 and contribution to many-body effects in nuclei. Though there were some experimental clues and theoretical studies of this state, it was unclear whether the obtained experimental results represented a real resonance or not due to the difficulty of separation from kinematical effects. Very recently, the FOREST group at Tohoku University reported a photoproduced isovector dibaryon state at mass of 2.14 GeV?22 in the 3c0 invariant mass spectra of the W3 ! 3c0c0 reaction. The most probable ?% configuration was 2¸ although they didn?t exclude the possibility of ?% = 1¸ or 3?. They separated the dibaryon production process from conventional pion production process for the first time using angular distribution of deuteron. We investigated the W3 ! 3c¸c? reaction for study of a possible #? dibaryon state using a deuterium target at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science, Tohoku University, Japan. In the experiment, ?3 ? 1012 tagged photon beam at energies ranging from 0.8 to 1.1 GeV was impinged to the liquid deuterium target (?520 mg?cm2) and the charged particles in the final state: deuteron, c¸, and c?, were detected by a magnetic spectrometer with a large solid angle named NKS2. NKS2 had capabilities of reconstructing momentum of charged particles, multi-track analysis, and ??c separation. We performed two different analyses named 2-track analysis and 3-track analysis. The 2-track (3-track) analysis was for events in which two (three) particles of 3c¸c? in the final state, including deuteron, were detected by NKS2. In the 3-track and 2-track analysis, ?2000? ?15000 events were identified as the W3 ! 3c¸c? reaction events, respectively. The 2-track analysis with higher statistics was mainly used to derive the cross sections, and the 3-track analysis was used to check the consistency of the 2-track analysis. In this thesis, we have shown the total cross section, the differential cross sections of the W3 ! 3c¸c? reaction in the region of jC j ¡ 0?15 GeV2. This is the world?s first measurement of this reaction in this energy region. Dibaryon resonance structures were observed below the #? threshold in the differential cross section of the invariant mass of 3c?. The mass and width of the structure were consistent with these of ?12 measured by the W3 ! 3c0c0 reaction. The mechanism of the production process was discussed based on the angular distribution of emitted deuteron.
