Noise of space-charge-limited current in solids is thermal.

The white noise level of space-charge-limited current (SCLC) of holes in a silicon device measured at five temperatures ranging from 113 to 300 K is shown to be proportional to the absolute temperature. This proves experimentally the thermal origin of noise for SCLC in solids.

Thermal noise in space-charge-limited hole current in silicon

Present theories on noise in single-carrier space-charge-limited currents in solids have not been quantitatively substantiated by experimental evidence. To obtain such experimental verification, the noise in specially fabricated silicon structures is being measured and analyzed. The first results of this verification effort are reported.

The effect of space charge fields due to finite length electron beams in the free-electron laser

The space charge electric field of a finite length electron beam in the free electron laser amplifier with a tapered wiggler is analyzed. In the free drift region between the accelerator and laser, expressions for the increase of energy spread due to the self field are presented. In the FEL interaction region, the general conditions on the importance of the self electric field in the equations of motion is obtained. A numerical example of the FEL experiment at 10.6 microns is given.

Effect of Initial Velocity on One-Dimensional, Ambipolar, Space-Charge Currents

Oppositely directed flows of positive and negative charges constitute an ambipolar current. A general case is analyzed in which the charges traverse the evacuated space between plane-parallel boundaries and all particles of a given charge species are monoenergetic. It is assumed that the charges may possess non-vanishing initial kinetic energy. This represents an extension of analyses by Langmuir and Muller-Lubeck for vanishing initial kinetic energy. Sample calculations of dimensionless current densities, electric and potential fields, and charge-density distributions are exhibited for cases where the electric field is assumed to vanish at one boundary but the species initial velocities may not. It is shown that resulting ion currents may be several times the Child's law limit if initial kinetic energies are of the order of the potential energy.

System Electrostatic Discharge Testing for Space Charging Caused ESD Events

This talk is about ground testing of spacecraft to determine immunity to the electrostatic discharges (ESDs) in certain Earth orbits. The particular spacecraft used as an example is the TOPEX/Poseidon spacecraft, an Earth orbiter with a 1334 km, 62 degree orbit. The talk is based on my recent experience with that spacecraft, but is an example of a generally good program. The program and this talk consist of the following elements: a discussion of the environment, showing the specific hazard areas on the spacecraft to illustrate the space charging and ESD process; spacecraft design features related to the environmental threat; the test device used for TOPEX/Poseidon; the test itself, including logistic and actions to avoid inadvertent damage to the spacecraft; and conclusions and lessons learned.

Pulsar space charging

It is found that stable self-consistent static solutions for a pulsar magnetosphere can be constructed with the magnetosphere having vacuum gaps separating the positive and negative regions of space charge. The magnetosphere is confined well within the light cylinder thus avoiding the problems of the Goldreich and Julian model. The total system charge is a free parameter in the family of models.

Space charge enhanced, plasma gradient induced error in satellite electric field measurements

In magnetospheric plasmas it is possible for plasma gradients to casue error in electric field measurements made by satellite double probes. The space charge emhanced plasma gradient induced error is discussed in general terms, the results of a laboratory experiment designed to illustrate this error are presented, and a simple expression that quantifies this error in a form that is readily applicable to satellite data is derived. The simple expression indicates that for a given probe bias current there is less error for cylindrical probes than for spherical probes. The expression also suggests that for Viking data the error is negligible.

Transfer of electrical space charge from corona between ground and thundercloud: Measurements and modeling

The evolution of the vertical electric field profile deduced from simultaneous field measurements at several levels below a thundercloud shows the development of a space charge layer at least up to 600 m. The average charge density in the whole layer from 0 m to 600 m can reach about 1 nC m(exp -3). The ions are generated at the ground by corona effect and the production rate is evaluated with a new method from the comparison of field evolutions at the ground and at altitude after a lightning flash. The modeling of the relevant processes shows tht ground corona accounts for the observed field evolutions and that the aerosol particles concentration has a very large effect on the evolution of corona ions. However, with a realistic value for this concentration a large amount of ground corona ions reach the level of 600 m.
