Adaptive ground implemented phase array

The simulation of an adaptive ground implemented phased array of five antenna elements is reported for a very high frequency system design that is tolerant to the radio frequency interference environment encountered by a tracking data relay satellite. Signals originating from satellites are received by the VHF ring array and both horizontal and vertical polarizations from each of the five elements are multiplexed and transmitted down to ground station. A panel on the transmitting end of the simulation chamber contains up to 10 S-band RFI sources along with the desired signal to simulate the dynamic relationship between user and TDRS. The 10 input channels are summed, and desired and interference signals are separated and corrected until the resultant sum signal-to-interference ratio is maximized. Testing performed with this simulation equipment demonstrates good correlation between predicted and actual results.

Crystal growth in fused solvent systems

Research is reported on the growth of electronic ceramic single crystals from solution for the future growth of crystals in a microgravity environment. Work included growth from fused or glass solvents and aqueous solutions. Topics discussed include: crystal identification and selection; aqueous solution growth of triglycine sulphate (TGS); and characterization of TGS.

Ontogenesis of receptive fields in the rabbit striate cortex

The development of receptive fields in rabbit pups was investigated by measuring their responses to various light stimuli and to electric shock delivered to the optic nerve head. The pups ranged in age from three to twenty-five days, allowing correlation of findings with maturation. The data, classified according to relation with symmetric or asymmetric field types, strongly suggest that retina maturation is the key factor in the rate of development in central visual pathways, and that central synaptic connections are made before the onset of retinal activity.

Unified method for serial study of body fluid compartments

Methods for the simultaneous determination of equilibrium space of I-125/RISA(radio-iodinated serum albumin) (plasma volume), Cr-51 red cell mass, Br-82 space (extracellular fluid volume), and tritiated water space (total body water) are described. Determinations were made on two occasions separated by a 1 week interval in 43 healthy young men who were on a strict metabolic diet. Hourly samples were taken for 6 hours after injection of the radionuclides. Correlation of these values to the inscribed exponential disappearance curve was high. In 15 subjects, earlier and more-frequent sampling led to no improvement in the accuracy of estimation of the I-125/RISA space. Use of this method gave results in 12 subjects for Br-82 space and in 11 subjects for tritiated water space which were not significantly different from those obtained by correction for urine loss.

Crystal growth in fused solvent systems

The successful nucleation of bismuth germanate, B12GeO20 on a high quality seed and the growth of regions of single crystals of the same orientation of the seed are reported. Lead germanate, Pb5Ge3O11 was also identified as a ferroelectric crystal with large electrooptic and nonlinear optic constants. Solvent criteria, solvent/development, and crystal growth are discussed, and recommendations for future studies are included.

Ultraviolet spectrophotometry of Sirius from Gemini 12

The spectral energy distribution of Sirius between 2500 and 3700 A at a resolution of 7 A is obtained from plates taken on Gemini 12. The agreement with other observations and the most recent line-blanketed model atmospheres is good. The equivalent width of the Mg II doublet near 2800 A is 6.0 A, if the continuum level is represented by regions near 2650 and 2910 A. This is consistent with expectations for a hot Am star and implies line blocking of up to 15% in this wavelength region.

Effect of potassium depletion in normal males - An Apollo 15 simulation

In the course of Apollo 15, physiologic abnormalities, manifested by ectopic activity on the ECG and unusual alterations in exercise tolerance, occurred in the crew of the Lunar Excursion Module. These were associated with decreases in total body potassium, measured by K-42, of 10% and 15%. The possibility of inadequate potassium (K+) intake existed. A simulation study was performed prior to Apollo 16, corresponding in duration to Apollo 15. Subjects endured the same sleep aberrations and caloric expenditure as the Apollo 15 astronauts. Subjects consumed a diet containing only 15 mEq/d of K+ during the entire 12 days of absolute bedrest. Study implications and reasons for discrepancies between K+ loss measured by balance techniques and K-42 are reviewed.

Ultraviolet spectrophotometry from Gemini 11 of stars in Orion

Ultraviolet spectrophotometry in the wavelength region 2600-3600 A is reported for the bright early-type stars beta, eta, gamma, delta, iota, epsilon, sigma, zeta, and kappa Ori. The results are in good agreement with other observations, and, with the possible exception of the supergiants, are in good agreement with recent line-blanketed model atmospheres. There is evidence that the supergiants possess a small ultraviolet deficiency shortward of 3000 A relative to main-sequence stars of similar spectral type. The most extreme example of this phenomenon is the star kappa Ori.

Stellar rotation and the thermomagnetic torque

It is noted that any reasonable assumption for the rotation rates of the interstellar clouds which must collapse to produce stars will result in stars which rotate much faster than suggested by observations if angular momentum is conserved throughout the collapse. The contribution of thermomagnetic torque, which can exist when a rarefied gas of polyatomic molecules is subjected to a magnetic field and a nonuniform temperature gradient, to the angular momentum of a collapsing protostellar object is examined in order to determine whether the magnitude of this torque is sufficient to slow down contracting protostellar clouds. Calculations are performed for two times during protostellar collapse when conditions may be favorable for thermomagnetic torque to play a role in angular-momentum considerations. The results indicate that this torque is apparently of no importance in determining or modifying stellar rotation during the early stages of stellar evolution.

Variations in the spatial distribution of 11 Micron radiation from omicron Ceti

The spatial distribution of 11 micron radiation from omicron Ceti was observed at various phases of its light cycle using a stellar interferometer. Changes were seen which can be attributed to variation in the strength of thermal emission from circumstellar dust relative to the stellar continuum at 11 microns. These changes are shown to be correlated with the changes in luminosity of micron Ceti in such a way that dust grain emission at 11 microns was increased more than the continuum during the period of maximum luminosity. The degree of the change in dust grain emission implies that the maximum dust temperature is in the range of 500 K to 700 K during minimum stellar luminosity.

Graphite/epoxy-tape test specimens

Constructed specimens for tranverse tensile testing of unidirectional graphite/epoxy tape is tested more accurately than earlier samples. Specimens are made using unsupported adhesive and commercially-available (e.g., Nomex, or equivalent) honeycomb core. Flexible adhesive and dimensionally stable core eliminate uneven thermal expansion. Tensile strength of tape at various temperatures becomes direct function of applied mechanical stress.
