Stability Analysis of Substituted Cobaltocenium [Bis(cyclopentadienyl)cobalt(III)] Employing Chemistry-Informed Neural Networks

Cobaltocenium derivatives are promising components of the anion exchange membranes due to their excellent thermal and alkaline stability under the operating conditions of a fuel cell. Here we present an efficient modeling approach of assessing the chemical stability of substituted cobaltocenium CoCp 2 + based on the computed electronic structure enhanced by machine learning techniques. Within the aqueous environment, the positive charge of the metal cation is balanced by the hydroxide anion through formation of the CoCp 2 + OH¯ complexes, whose dissociation is studied within the implicit solvent employing density functional theory. The data set of about 118 species based on 42 substituent groups characterized by a range of electron- donating (ED) and electron-withdrawing (EW) properties is constructed and analyzed. Given 12 carefully chosen chemistry-informed descriptors of the complexes and relevant fragments, the stability of the complexes is found to strongly correlate with the energies of the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals, modulated by a switching function of the Hirshfeld charge. The latter is used as a measure of the electron withdrawing-donating character of the substituents. Based on this observation from the conventional regression analysis, two fully connected, feed-forward neural network (FNN) models with different unit structures, called the chemistry-informed (CINN) and the quadratic (QNN) neural networks, are developed. Both models predict the bond dissociation energies of the cobaltocenium complexes with mean relative errors less than 5.40% and average absolute errors less than 0.94 kcal/mol. The results show the potential of QNN to efficiently capture more complex relationships. Here, the concept of incorporating the domain (chemical) knowledge/insight into the neural network structure paves the way to applications of machine learning techniques with small data sets, ultimately leading to better predictive models compared to the conventional regression analysis.

Polymer thick-film conductors and dielectrics for membrane switches and flexible circuitry

The fabrication and operation of membrane switches are discussed. The membrane switch functions as a normally open, momentary contact, low-voltage pressure-sensitive device. Its design is a three-layer sandwich usually constructed of polyester film. Conductive patterns are deposited onto the inner side of top and bottom sheets by silk screening. The center spacer is then placed between the two circuit layers to form a sandwich, generally held together by an adhesive. When pressure is applied to the top layer, it flexes through the punched openings of the spacer to establish electrical contact between conductive pads of the upper and lower sheets, momentarily closing the circuit. Upon release of force the top sheet springs back to its normal open position. The membrane touch switch is being used in a rapidly expanding range of applications, including instrumentation, appliances, electronic games and keyboards. Its board acceptance results from its low cost, durability, ease of manufacture, cosmetic appeal and design flexibility. The principal electronic components in the membrane switch are the conductor and dielectric.

Agglomeration-based geometric multigrid solvers for compact discontinuous Galerkin discretizations on unstructured meshes

Here, we present a geometric multigrid solver for the Compact Discontinuous Galerkin method through building a hierarchy of coarser meshes using a simple agglomeration method which handles arbitrary element shapes and dimensions. The method is easily extendable to other discontinuous Galerkin discretizations, including the Local DG method and the Interior Penalty method. We demonstrate excellent solver performance for Poisson's equation, provided a flux formulation is used for the operator coarsening and a suitable switch function chosen for the numerical fluxes.

Dynamic Phasor Modeling of Various Multipulse Rectifiers and a VSI Fed by 18-Pulse Asymmetrical Autotransformer Rectifier Unit for Fast Transient Analysis

To study the fast modelling of dynamic characteristics caused by power electronic switching, the dynamic phasor (DP) theory based on the time-varying Fourier decomposition and frequency shifting is firstly applied to the modelling of various multipulse rectifiers. The DP model for symmetrical 12-pulse phase-shifting reactor rectifier unit (PSR-RU) is derived with model order reduction, relations between ac and dc terminals, and Taylor series expansion. The DP model of asymmetrical 18-pulse autotransformer rectifier unit (AT-RU) is proposed based on the switching functions expressed in the DP domain. Meanwhile, the DP model of voltage source inverter (VSI) fed by asymmetrical 18-pulse AT-RU is built with the harmonic state-space (HSS) equations. Under both balanced and unbalanced conditions, the good calculation accuracy and rapid simulation speed of the developed DP models are validated by the detailed time-domain (TD) simulation.

Fuel optimal maneuvers of spacecraft about a circular orbit

Fuel optimal maneuvers of spacecraft relative to a body in circular orbit are investigated using a point mass model in which the magnitude of the thrust vector is bounded. All nonsingular optimal maneuvers consist of intervals of full thrust and coast and are found to contain at most seven such intervals in one period. Only four boundary conditions where singular solutions occur are possible. Computer simulation of optimal flight path shapes and switching functions are found for various boundary conditions. Emphasis is placed on the problem of soft rendezvous with a body in circular orbit.

A minimal residual method for transonic potential flows

For transonic flow calculations, a combination of the successive line over-relaxation (SLOR) and the preconditioned conjugate gradient (CG) method has been suggested by Wong and Hafez (1981). This paper studies the method of minimal residual (MR) which avoids a combined iteration. This method is closely related to the CG method, may be regarded as a first-order gradient method, and is applicable to symmetric and nonsymmetric matrices. The problem is formulated as a nonlinear mixed elliptic-hyperbolic partial differential equation which includes an artificial viscosity and a switching function which is zero in subsonic regions and nonzero in supersonic regions. Alternatives to the SLOR method which provide faster convergence rates are introduced. The preconditioned MR algorithm is developed, and transonic potential flows around NACA 0012 airfoil are calculated for different Mach numbers and angles of attack. Preliminary results are presented, demonstrating that the MR algorithm requires no parameter estimation and rapidly converges for subsonic flows.

Ergonomic problems regarding the interactive touch input via screens in onboard and ground-based flight control

A significant problem concerning the integration of display and switching functions is related to the fact that numerous informative data which have to be processed by man must be read from only a few display devices. A satisfactory ergonomic design of integrated display devices and keyboards is in many cases difficult, because not all functions which can be displayed and selected are simultaneously available. A technical solution which provides an integration of display and functional elements on the basis of the highest flexibility is obtained by using a cathode ray tube with a touch-sensitive screen. The employment of an integrated data input/output system is demonstrated for the cases of onboard and ground-based flight control. Ergonomic studies conducted to investigate the suitability of an employment of touch-sensitive screens are also discussed.

A fiber optic tactical voice/data network based on FDDI

An asynchronous high-speed fiber optic local area network is described that supports ordinary data packet traffic simultaneously with synchronous Tl voice traffic over a common FDDI token ring channel. A voice interface module was developed that parses, buffers, and resynchronizes the voice data to the packet network. The technique is general, however, and can be applied to any deterministic class of networks, including multi-tier backbones. A conventional single token access protocol was employed at the lowest layer, with fixed packet sizes for voice and variable for data. In addition, the higher layer packet data protocols are allowed to operate independently of those for the voice thereby permitting great flexibility in reconfiguring the network. Voice call setup and switching functions were performed external to the network with PABX equipment.

Singular control in minimum time spacecraft reorientation

Spacecraft reorientation is investigated numerically for an inertially symmetric rigid spacecraft with three bounded independent control torques aligned with the principal axes. The dynamical system of the spacecraft and the framework of the optimal-control problem are established in order to identify all of the potential strategies. The investigation lists bang-bang solutions and finite-order and infinite-order singular arcs, and the conditions for the finite-order singular arcs are given. Numerical examples are developed for all of the control-logic systems, and the suboptimality of the rest-to-rest maneuvers is proven for principal-axis rotations. The most efficient control technique is the singular control of infinite order, and the vector-valued singular control can be utilized in a derivative of the switching function.
