Large inflationary logarithms in a nontrivial nonlinear sigma model

Loops of inflationary gravitons are known to induce large temporal and spatial logarithms that can cause perturbation theory to break down. Nonlinear sigma models possess the same kind of derivative interactions and induce the same sorts of large logarithms, without the complicated index structure and potential gauge problem. Previous studies have examined models with zero field space curvature that can be reduced to free field theories by local, invertible field redefinitions. Here we study a model that cannot be so reduced and still shows the same sorts of large logarithms. Additionally, we compute the evolution of the background at 1-loop and 2-loop orders, and we find the 1-loop β and γ functions.

Nonlinear Sigma model amplitudes to all loop orders are contained in the Tr ( Φ 3 ) theory

Scattering amplitudes for the simplest theory of colored scalar particles—the Tr ( Φ 3 ) theory—have recently been the subject of active investigations. In this work we describe an unanticipated wider implication of this work: the Tr ( Φ 3 ) theory secretly contains nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) amplitudes to all loop orders. The NLSM amplitudes are obtained from Tr ( Φ 3 ) amplitudes by a unique shift of kinematic variables. We show that this shifted kinematics produces amplitudes for a cubic theory with a linear term in the potential, with extrema spontaneously breaking U ( N ) → U ( N − k ) × U ( k ) . The Goldstone amplitudes for this theory coincide with those of pions in the U ( N ) × U ( N ) → U ( N ) chiral Lagrangian to all orders in the planar limit. We also give a purely on-shell understanding of this correspondence, showing that integrands defined by the kinematic shifts have the correct residues on poles and appropriately produce the Adler zero. Finally, we discuss how similar kinematic shifts produce certain infinite classes of mixed amplitudes of pions and Tr ( Φ 3 ) scalars, most of which are not interpretable from the Lagrangian description. Integrable higher-spin deformations of sigma models from auxiliary fields

We construct a new infinite family of integrable deformations of the principal chiral model (PCM) parametrized by an interaction function of several variables, which extends the formalism of [C. Ferko and L. Smith, An infinite family of integrable sigma models using auxiliary fields, .] and includes deformations of the PCM by functions of both the stress tensor and higher-spin conserved currents. We show in detail that every model in this class admits a Lax representation for its equations of motion, and that the Poisson bracket of the Lax connection takes the Maillet form, establishing the existence of an infinite set of Poisson-commuting conserved charges. We argue that the non-Abelian T-dual of any model in this family is classically integrable, and that T-duality “commutes” with a general deformation in this class, in a sense which we make precise. Finally, we demonstrate that these higher-spin auxiliary field deformations can be extended to accommodate the addition of a Wess-Zumino term, and we exhibit the Lax connection in this case. Infinite Family of Integrable Sigma Models Using Auxiliary Fields

We introduce a class of 2D sigma models which are parametrized by a function of one variable. In addition to the physical field g , these models include an auxiliary field v α which mediates interactions in a prescribed way. We prove that every theory in this family is classically integrable, in that it possesses an infinite set of conserved charges in involution, which can be constructed from a Lax representation for the equations of motion. This class includes the principal chiral model (PCM) and all deformations of the PCM by functions of the energy-momentum tensor. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

T Duality and T T ¯ -like Deformations of Sigma Models

We initiate the study of the interplay between T duality and classical stress tensor deformations in two-dimensional sigma models. We first show that a general Abelian T duality commutes with the T T ¯ deformation, which can be engineered by a gravitational dressing. Then, by using an auxiliary field formulation of stress tensor deformations of the principal chiral model (PCM), we prove that non-Abelian T duality and arbitrary T T ¯ -like flows also commute for theories in this class. We argue that all such auxiliary field deformations of both the PCM and its T dual are classically integrable. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Sigma: Uncertainty Propagation for C++

Sigma is a header-only C++-17 library for uncertainty propagation, inspired by uncertainties for Python and Measurements.jl for Julia. The library tracks the functional correlation between dependent and independent variables, ensuring that the uncertainty of the independent variables is properly considered in the calculation of the dependent variables’ uncertainties. It is intended as a near drop-in replacement for the standard floating point types (aside from uncertainty specification), and aims to be easily interoperable with the existing standard types.

Using Deep Learning Techniques to Search for the MiniBooNE Low Energy Excess in MicroBooNE with > 3$\sigma$ Sensitivity

This thesis describes an analysis developed for the MicroBooNE experiment to investigate an anomalous excess of electron-like events observed in the MiniBooNE detector. The hypothesis investigated here is that the MiniBooNE anomaly represents appearance of electron neutrinos. Using an amalgam of novel Deep Learning and standard algorithmic techniques this analysis reconstructs and identifies a highly pure sample of charged current quasi-elastic muon neutrino and electron neutrino interactions. This thesis describes the steps in the analysis chain and provides data-to-simulation comparisons for each step that establish confidence in the final prediction. When interpreted in the context of a $\nu e$ appearance like model, this analysis predicts a 3.2$\sigma$ sensitivity to exclude a standard model fluctuation which would appear as a MiniBooNE like anomaly using $7\times10^{20}$ protons on target of MicroBooNE Data.

Nucleon form factors and the pion-nucleon sigma term

This talk summarizes the progress made since Lattice 2021 in understanding and controlling the contributions of towers of multihadron excited states with mass gaps starting lower than of radial excitations, and in increasing our confidence in the extraction of ground state nucleon matrix elements. The most clear evidence for multihadron excited state contributions (ESC) is in axial/pseudoscalar form factors that are required to satisfy the PCAC relation between them. The talk examines the broader question--which and how many of the theoretically allowed positive parity states N(p)π(−p), N(0)π(0)π(0), N(p)π(0), N(0)π(p), … make significant contributions to a given matrix element? New data for the axial, electric and magnetic form factors are presented. They continue to show trends observed in Ref.[1]. The N2LO χPT analysis of the ESC to the pion-nucleon sigma term, σπN, has been extended to include the Δ as an explicit degree of freedom [2]. The conclusion reached in Ref.[3] that Nπ and Nππ states each contribute about 10 MeV to σπN, and the consistency between the lattice result with Nπ state included and the phenomenological estimate is not changed with this improvement.

Interplay Between Stereochemically Active Lone Pair Repulsions, Sigma Hole Interactions, and Delocalized Redox Processes in Topochemical Fluoride‐Ion Insertion

Topochemical insertion/extraction of cations has emerged as a generalizable strategy for modulating the crystal and electronic structure of periodic solids. In contrast, strategies for topochemical anion insertion are poorly explored and fundamental principles for designing insertion hosts to accommodate anions remain scarce. Here, we observe reversible room-temperature fluoride-ion insertion within tunnels of Sn 2 TiO 4 defined by the stereochemical expression of Sn 5 s 2 lone pairs. X-ray scattering studies of fluoride-ion-insertion-induced crystal structure modulation and X-ray absorption/emission spectroscopy probes of electronic structure along with magnetic susceptibility measurements and first-principles calculations are used to decipher design principles underpinning reversible fluoride-ion insertion and bulk diffusion. Fluoride-ion insertion is enabled by a combination of a large, polarizable tunnel, delocalized redox at Ti─O─Sn centers, inherent repulsion between the fluoride-ion and Sn 5 s 2 electron lone pairs, and the formation of dative interactions between Sn-centered σ-holes and fluoride-ions, yielding a reversible capacity of 0.5 fluoride-ions per Sn 2 TiO 4 formula unit. Our results demonstrate that the complex interplay between dative interactions and stereochemically active lone pair repulsions is critical to defining the thermodynamics and kinetics controlling fluoride-ion insertion and diffusion. As such, the design of fluoride-ion insertion hosts for anion batteries requires site-selective modification to modulate lattice—ion interactions.

Fluorophilic Sigma(σ)‐Lock Self‐Healable Copolymers

Abstract Although F‐Containing molecules and macromolecules are often used in molecular biology to increase the binding with Lewis acidic groups by introducing favorable C−F dipoles, there is virtually no experimental evidence and limited understanding of the nature of these interactions, especially their role in synthetic polymeric materials. These studies elucidate the molecular origin of inter‐ and intra‐Chain interactions responsible for self‐healing of F‐Containing copolymers composed of pentafluorostyrene and n‐butyl acrylate units (p(PFS/nBA). Guided by dynamic surface oscillating force (SOF) and spectroscopic measurements supported by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, these studies show that the reformation of σ‐σ orbitals in −C−F of PFS and CH 3 CH 2 − of nBA units enables the recovery of entropic energy via fluorophilic‐σ‐lock van der Waals forces when PFS/nBA molar ratios are ~50/50. The strength of these interactions determined experimentally for self‐healable PFS/nBA compositions is in the order ~0.3 kcal/mol which primarily comes from fluorophilic‐σ‐lock (~70 %) contributions. These interactions are significantly diminished for non‐self‐healable counterparts. Strongly polarized −C−F σ orbitals create lateral dipolar forces enhancing the affinity towards −C−H orbitals, facilitating energetically favorable interactions. Entropic recovery driven by non‐Covalent bonding offers a valuable tool in designing materials with unique functionalities, particularly self‐healable batteries and energy storage devices.
