>24% screen printed Cu contacted n-TOPCon solar cells with successful implementation of LECO process

In this paper, we report the successful fabrication of >24.0 % efficiency n-TOPCon Si solar cells with screen-printed, fire-through Cu contact to n-TOPCon on the rear side and Ag contacted boron emitter on the front side by implementing optimized firing and LECO conditions. The highest efficiency (24.3%) Cu contacted n-TOPCon cell in this study showed excellent cell performance parameters with V oc >730 mV, J sc of 41.1 mA/cm 2 and FF of 80.8%, resulting in an absolute efficiency gap of 0.2% between Cu-contacted and fully Ag contacted n-TOPCon cells (24.5%). The mini-module fabricated with the Cu contacted n-TOPCon cell showed excellent reliability and durability of open-circuit voltage (V oc ), pseudo fill factor (pFF) and efficiency after prolonged damp-heat tests. Such high efficiency screen printed Cu contacted n-TOPCon cells provide unique opportunity to replace very expensive Ag contact on n-TOPCon with cheaper screen printable Cu metal pastes.

Regeneration of Benzimidazole-Based Organohydrides Mediated by Ru Catalysts

Benzimidazole-based organohydrides (BIHs) are versatile hydride, electron, and proton donors in a variety of artificial photosynthetic systems for the generation of solar fuels. Currently, BIHs are often used in stoichiometric rather than catalytic processes. The catalytic regeneration of BIHs from their oxidized form (BI + ) is an urgent necessity in order to allow the development of recyclable systems and devices, but viable examples are scarce and require large overpotentials. Here, in this study, we report the electrocatalytic regeneration of a series of BIHs with varying hydricities, promoted by a ruthenium half-sandwich complex, [(HMB)Ru(bpy)(H)]+ (HMB = η 6 -C 6 Me 6 , bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine), in the presence of tributylammonium (HNBu 3 + ) as a proton source. This metal hydride was generated in situ from the 2e - reduction/protonation of the corresponding solvento-complex. In comparison to the direct cathodic reduction of BI + in the presence of HNBu 3 + , the use of this ruthenium catalyst allowed efficient regeneration of BIHs at less negative potentials, with Faradaic efficiencies up to 80% and significantly higher conversion yields due to the circumvention of the dimerization pathway and the stepwise reduction and protonation reactions. Finally, the thermodynamic challenges involved in the regeneration of very hydridic BIHs mediated by Ru hydride catalysts were examined.

Enhanced power density in zero-vacuum-gap thermophotovoltaic devices

Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) devices, which convert infrared thermal radiation from a hot emitter into electricity, hold great promise for applications in energy storage and waste heat recovery. While recent advancements have developed TPV devices with high efficiency, much less attention has been focused on improving the power density. Current TPV methods face challenges in significantly boosting the power density using emitters at very high temperatures (>2000 °C) or using complex, costly architectures such as near-field TPV. Here, we present the first experimental demonstration of a novel far-field TPV concept called “zero-vacuum-gap TPV” that eliminates the vacuum or gas-filled gap in conventional designs. By incorporating a high-index, infrared-transparent, and thermally insulating fused quartz spacer, we achieved a two-fold increase in power density compared to the far-field counterpart under identical conditions. Notably, in our experiment, the zero-vacuum-gap far-field design transforms a less-optimized, low-power-density far-field device into one with one of the highest power densities reported at moderate temperatures (700–1100 °C). Moreover, our measurements using a graphite emitter surpass the blackbody limit for gap-integrated far-field devices and match the performance of near-field TPV devices with an ultrathin 200-nm gap. Our findings suggest that zero-vacuum-gap TPV offers potential for cost-effective, scalable manufacturing using current technologies. Additionally, our modelling predicts that further power enhancements over one order of magnitude are possible with other spacer materials.

Growth of Extra-Large Chromophore Supramolecular Polymers for Enhanced Hydrogen Production

The control of morphology in bioinspired chromophore assemblies is key to the rational design of functional materials for light harvesting. Here, we investigate here morphological changes in perylene monoimide chromophore assemblies during thermal annealing in aqueous environments of high ionic strength to screen electrostatic repulsion. We found that annealing under these conditions leads to the growth of extra-large ribbon-shaped crystalline supramolecular polymers of widths from about 100 nm to several micrometers and lengths from 1 to 10 μm while still maintaining a unimolecular thickness. This growth process was monitored by variable-temperature absorbance spectroscopy, synchrotron X-ray scattering, and confocal microscopy. The extra-large single-crystal-like supramolecular polymers are highly porogenic, thus creating loosely packed hydrogel scaffolds that showed greatly enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production with turnover numbers as high as 13 500 over ~110 h compared to 7500 when smaller polymers are used. Our results indicate great functional opportunities in thermally and pathway-controlled supramolecular polymerization.

Mapping potentials and bridging regional gaps of renewable resources in China

Reasonable and effective use of renewable resources can reduce dependence on traditional fossil-based energy sources and reduce carbon emissions. This study mapped the spatial potentials of renewable resources (i.e., solar radiation, precipitation, wind, and geothermal resources) in China. The results showed that China's most abundant renewable resources are located in the southwestern regions, which are significantly different from the spatial distribution patterns of population and economic development. Four southwestern provinces (Tibet, Qinghai, Sichuan, and Yunnan) make up only 7% of the national gross domestic product (GDP) and 30% of the national land area but possess 58% of the renewable resources. Furthermore, we found a weak to moderate degree of negative correlation between the emergy density of renewable resources and GDP per capita on the administrative levels of the prefecture-level cities for the whole country and in its eastern, central, and western regions. This means that the socioeconomically underdeveloped Midwest has more abundant renewable resources. A distributed energy-economic system may help to bridge the regional gaps of renewable sources in China. These findings can support policy decisions for the better development and use of renewable resources in China.

Controlling Product Selectivity in Photochemical CO 2 Reduction with the Redox Potential of the Photosensitizer

The ability to selectively reduce CO 2 to a particular product or mixture of products is expected to play a key role in mitigation strategies aiming to alleviate the devastating impact of this greenhouse gas in our climate and oceans. Among those, the production of liquid solar fuels from CO 2 and H 2 O will likely need cascade strategies involving multiple catalysts carrying out different functions. This will require that the catalysts doing the initial CO 2 reduction steps deliver the right product or products to downstream catalysts. CO, H 2 and formate are the most common products in CO 2 reduction by molecular catalysts. Here, in this work, we demonstrate control over the selectivity of C 1 products in photochemical CO 2 reduction with the same catalyst, simply by changing the redox potential of the photosensitizer and/or the water concentration. Turnover numbers for CO generation with one of the photosensitizers under anhydrous conditions reached 85,000, one of the largest values reported to date. A combination of experimental results and DFT calculations show that control of the selectivity is achieved, in part, due to the interplay between regimes under kinetic or thermodynamic control. These regimes are largely dictated by the proton sources and the CO 2 reduction byproducts generated.

Metal–Carbodithioate-Based 3D Semiconducting Metal–Organic Framework: Porous Optoelectronic Material for Energy Conversion

Solar energy conversion requires the working compositions to generate photoinduced charges with high potential and the ability to deliver charges to the catalytic sites and/or external electrode. These two properties are typically at odds with each other and call for new molecular materials with sufficient conjugation to improve charge conductivity but not as much conjugation as to overly compromise the optical band gap. In this work, we developed a semiconducting metal-organic framework (MOF) prepared explicitly through metal-carbodithioate"(-CS 2 ) n M" linkage chemistry, entailing augmented metal-linker electronic communication. The stronger ligand field and higher covalent character of metal-carbodithioate linkages-when combined with spirofluorene-derived organic struts and nickel-(II) ion-based nodes-provided a stable, semiconducting 3D-porous MOF, Spiro-CS 2 Ni. This MOF lacks long-range ordering and is defined by a flexible structure with non-aggregated building units, as suggested by reverse Monte Carlo simulations of the pair distribution function obtained from total scattering experiments. The solvent-removed "closed pore"material recorded a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller area of similar to 400m 2 /g, where the "open pore" form possesses90 wt % solvent-accessible porosity. Electrochemical measurements suggest that Spiro-CS 2 Ni possesses a band gap of 1.57 eV(sigma = 10 -7 S/cm at -1.3 V bias potential),which can be further improved by manipulating the d-electron configuration through an axial coordination (ligand/substrate), the latter of which indicates usefulness as an electrocatalyst and/or a photoelectrocatalyst(upon substrate binding). Transient-absorption spectroscopy reveals a long-lived photo-generated charge-transfer state (τ CR = 6.5 mu s) capable of chemical transformation under a biased voltage. Spiro-CS 2 Ni can endure a compelling range of pH(1-12 for weeks) and hours of electrochemical and photoelectrochemical conditions in the presence of water and organic acids. We believe this work provides crucial design principles for low-density, porous,light-energy-conversion materials.
