Manipulating Cu vacancy in Yb triangular lattice Materials: Investigating the quantum disordered compound CuYbSe 2 and spin glass Cu 2.73 ⁢YbP 2

Yb-based triangular lattice materials have attracted significant attention due to their potential for hosting exotic magnetic quantum states. In this paper, we report the structural, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of two Yb triangular lattice compounds with vacancy disorder at nonmagnetic Cu sites: CuYbSe 2 and Cu 2.73 ⁢YbP 2 . Single-crystal x-ray diffraction determines notable Cu-site vacancies in both materials. Unlike a single Cu site with 0.5 occupancy in CuYbSe 2 , Cu 2.73 ⁢YbP 2 only presents 27% vacancies on one of three Cu sites. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate dominant antiferromagnetic interactions between Yb 3+ ions. The effective magnetic moment is consistent with an effective spin-1/2 state of Yb 3+ . CuYbSe 2 exhibits strong magnetic anisotropy between in-plane and out-of-plane directions with the estimated exchange interactions 𝐽 𝑎 /𝑘 B = 6.48 K and 𝐽 𝑐 /𝑘 B = 2.55 K. No magnetic ordering is observed down to 0.4 K, supporting its quantum disordered ground state and candidacy as a quantum spin liquid. In contrast, Cu 2.73 ⁢YbP 2 shows clear evidence of spin freezing at 4.5 K in both magnetization and heat capacity data, indicating a spin glass state. The field-induced magnetic orders are found in CuYbSe 2 . These results highlight the critical role of structural vacancies in perturbing Yb-based triangular lattices. In conclusion, we demonstrate that while the intrinsic Yb triangular lattices are comparable, the presence of Cu vacancies can fundamentally alter the magnetic ground state—tuning the system between quantum disordered and spin glass behavior.

Spin-Glass-like State and Reversible Room-Temperature Magnetocaloric Effect in Double Distorted Perovskites Nd(Cu 3– x Mn x )Mn 4 O 12

The preparation, complex magnetic properties and room-temperature magnetocaloric effect in Nd(Cu 3–x Mn x )Mn 4 O 12 with cation distribution (Nd 3+ ) A (Cu 3–x 2+x Mn x 3+ ) A' (Mn 1+x 3+ Mn 3–x 4+ ) B O 12 2– (x = 1 and 1.5) have been reported. Both compounds show a sharp paramagnetic-ferromagnetic (FM) transition at T C of 300 and 280 K, respectively. The substitution of Cu by Mn at the A' site induces the emergence of a spin glass state below ≈63 K for x = 1 and ≈72 K for x = 1.5 compound. Another antiferromagnetic-like magnetic transition is also observed in both compounds at 23 and 28 K, respectively, which is discussed as the antiferromagnetic coupling between Nd 3+ at the A' site and (Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ ) at the B site. These two compounds exhibit room-temperature magnetocaloric effect. For a small field of 2 T, the maximum magnetic entropy changes –ΔS M are 1.5 J/kg K at 300 K and 1.4 J/kg K at 280 K, respectively. Furthermore, the –ΔS M (T) curves show an asymmetric distribution, resulting in high refrigerant capacity values for both compounds. We further demonstrate the distinct roles of the A'- and B-site spins on the magnetic properties and the origin of the spin-glass-like state in double distorted perovskites Ln(Cu 3–x Mn x )Mn 4 O 12 family of compounds.

Extraction of the spin-glass free-energy landscape from $1/f$ noise measurements

The 1/f resistance noise has been measured in thin CuMn (13.5 at.%) spin-glass films. The temperature and frequency dependence have been analyzed in terms of the landscape of free-energy barriers. Here this analysis provides the full barrier distribution for various thin film thicknesses between 10 nm and 80 nm. The free-energy barrier height distribution's width and energy position have been determined. Contrary to previous models with fixed shape and energy, the free-energy landscape is described by a distribution of barriers that both shifts and changes shape as the temperature is reduced. The dependence of this distribution is in contrast with recent predictions. Using the fluctuation dissipation theorem, the 1/f measurements connect with χ", displaying agreement with other direct measurements of the latter.

Scaling whole-chip QAOA for higher-order ising spin glass models on heavy-hex graphs

Abstract We show that the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) for higher-order, random coefficient, heavy-hex compatible spin glass Ising models has strong parameter concentration across problem sizes from 16 up to 127 qubits for p = 1 up to p = 5, which allows for computationally efficient parameter transfer of QAOA angles. Matrix product state (MPS) simulation is used to compute noise-free QAOA performance. Hardware-compatible short-depth QAOA circuits are executed on ensembles of 100 higher-order Ising models on noisy IBM quantum superconducting processors with 16, 27, and 127 qubits using QAOA angles learned from a single 16-qubit instance using the JuliQAOA tool. We show that the best quantum processors find lower energy solutions up to p = 2 or p = 3, and find mean energies that are about a factor of two off from the noise-free distribution. We show that p = 1 QAOA energy landscapes remain very similar as the problem size increases using NISQ hardware gridsearches with up to a 414 qubit processor.

Disorder-induced spin excitation continuum and spin-glass ground state in the inverse spinel CuGa 2 O 4

Spinel-structured compounds serve as prototypical examples of highly frustrated systems and are promising candidates for realizing the long-sought quantum spin liquid (QSL) state. However, structural disorder is inevitable in many real QSL candidates and its impact remains a topic of intense debate. In this work, we conduct comprehensive investigations on CuGa 2 ⁢ O 4 , a spinel compound with significant structural disorder, focusing on its thermodynamic properties and spectroscopic behaviors. No long-range magnetic order is observed down to ∼80 mK, as evidenced by magnetic susceptibility, specific-heat, and elastic neutron scattering measurements. More intriguingly, inelastic neutron scattering experiments reveal a broad gapless continuum of magnetic excitations around the Brillouin zone boundary, resembling the magnetic excitation spectra expected for a QSL. Nevertheless, a spin-freezing transition at 𝑇 f ≈ 0.88 K is identified from the cusp in the dc susceptibility curves, where a bifurcation between zero-field-cooling and field-cooling curves occurs. Furthermore, ac susceptibility measurements show a peak close to 𝑇 f at low frequency, which shifts to higher temperature with increasing frequency. These results show that CuGa 2 ⁢ O 4 has a spin-glass ground state, consistent with the establishment of short-range order inferred from the specific-heat measurements. Collectively, these results illustrate the crucial role of disorder in defining the excitation spectrum out of the disordered ground state. Furthermore, our findings shed light onto the broader class of 𝐴⁢𝐵 2 ⁢O 4 spinels and advance our understanding of the spin dynamics in magnetically disordered systems.

Evolution of magnetic surfboards and spin glass behavior in (Fe 1- p Ga p ) 2 TiO 5

The unusual anisotropy of the spin glass (SG) transition in the pseudobrookite system Fe 2 TiO 5 has been interpreted as arising from an induced, van der Waals-like, interaction among magnetic clusters. Here we present susceptibility ($\chi$) and specific heat data ($C$) for Fe 2 TiO 5 diluted with non-magnetic Ga, (Fe 1- p Ga p ) 2 TiO 5 , for disorder parameter $p$ = 0, 0.11, and 0.42, and elastic neutron scattering data for $p$ = 0.20. A uniform suppression of ${T_g}$ is observed upon increasing $p$, along with a value of $\chi \left( {{T_g}} \right)$ that increases as $T_g$ decreases, i.e. $d\chi ({T_g})/d{T_g} < 0$ We also observe $C\left( T \right) \propto {T^2}$ in the low temperature limit. In conclusion, the observed behavior places (Fe 1- p Ga p ) 2 TiO 5 in the category of a strongly geometrically frustrated SG.

Magnetic polarons and spin-glass behavior in insulating La 1-x Sr x CoO 3 (x = 0.125 and 0.15)

The evolution of magnetic polarons in Sr doped La Co O 3 ( La 1 - x Sr x Co O 3 ) single crystal and polycrystalline samples are investigated by employing dc and ac magnetic measurement and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) techniques. The effect of magnetic field and temperature on magnetic polarons is experimentally studied for La 0.875 Sr 0.125 Co O 3 and La 0.85 Sr 0.15 Co O 3 compounds that belong to the spin glass insulating regime of the broader compositional phase diagram of this system. Langevin analyses of the isothermal magnetization curves in the notional paramagnetic regime prove the existence of magnetic polarons with large moments. The dc field superimposed ac susceptibility data and the analysis of the glassy dynamics prove that the size of polarons in 15% Sr doped crystal increase as the field is increased while the field effect is not visible in the 12.5% Sr doped crystal. A polycrystalline sample of La 0.85 Sr 0.15 Co O 3 is analyzed by SANS experiments, which confirm nonzero correlation length at temperatures far above the macroscopic ordering temperature and hence the presence of magnetic polarons.

Iterative quantum optimization of spin glass problems with rapidly oscillating transverse fields

In this work, we introduce a new iterative quantum algorithm, called Iterative Symphonic Tunneling for Satisfiability problems (IST-SAT), which solves quantum spin glass optimization problems using high-frequency oscillating transverse fields. IST-SAT operates as a sequence of iterations, in which bitstrings returned from one iteration are used to set spin-dependent phases in oscillating transverse fields in the next iteration. Over several iterations, the novel mechanism of the algorithm steers the system toward the problem ground state. We benchmark IST-SAT on sets of hard MAX-3-XORSAT problem instances with exact state vector simulation, and report polynomial speedups over Trotterized adiabatic quantum computation and the best known semi-greedy classical algorithm. When IST-SAT is seeded with a sufficiently good initial approximation, the algorithm converges to exact solution(s) in a polynomial number of iterations. Our numerical results identify a critical Hamming radius, or quality of initial approximation, where the time-to-solution crosses from exponential to polynomial scaling in problem size. This work proposes IST-SAT a new quantum algorithm, which improves upon solutions obtained from initial classical or quantum optimization algorithms. The steering mechanism we introduce through IST-SAT presents a new path toward achieving quantum advantage in optimization.

Memory effect and phase transition in a hierarchical trap model for spin glasses

Here, we introduce an efficient dynamical tree method that enables us to explicitly demonstrate the thermoremanent magnetization memory effect in a hierarchical energy landscape. Our simulation nicely reproduces the nontrivial waiting-time and waiting-temperature dependences in this nonequilibrium phenomenon. We further investigate the condensation effect, in which a small set of microstates dominates the thermodynamic behavior in the multilayer trap model. Importantly, a structural phase transition of the multilayer tree model is shown to coincide with the onset of the condensation phenomenon. Our results underscore the importance of hierarchical structure and demonstrate the intimate relation between the glassy behavior and structure of barrier trees.

Spin-glass state in nickelate superconductors

Magneto-optical measurements in La 0.8 Sr 0.2 NiO 2 and Nd 0.825 Sr 0.175 NiO 2 reveal an intriguing new facet of infinite-layer nickelate superconductors: the onset of spin-glass behavior at a temperature far exceeding the superconducting critical temperature T c . This discovery sharply contrasts with copper oxide superconductors, where magnetism and superconductivity remain largely exclusive. Moreover, the magnitude and onset temperature of the polar Kerr effect in Nd 0.825 Sr 0.175 NiO 2 fabricated on SrTiO 3 and (LaAlO 3 ) 0.3 (Sr 2 TaAlO 6 ) 0.7 substrates differ dramatically, while T c does not.

Mn-induced spin glass behavior in metallic Ir 3 Sn 7-x Mn x

Transition metal stannides are usually semiconductors with a narrow band gap. We report experimental investigation on metallic Ir 3 Sn 7– x Mn x ( x = 0 and 0.56). Single crystal x-ray diffraction refinement indicates that Ir 3 Sn 7– x Mn x crystals form a cubic structure (space group Im 3 - m ) with the lattice parameter a = 9.362(4) Å for x = 0 and 9.328(6) Å for x = 0.56. The electrical resistivity shows metallic behavior between 2 K and 300 K with T 2 dependence at T < 30 K for x = 0, reflecting the Fermi-liquid ground state. While Ir 3 Sn 7 exhibits weak diamagnetism, partial substitution of Sn by Mn results in spin glass behavior in Ir 3 Sn 7- x Mn x below T g ~ 13 K for x = 0.56. Remarkably, an upturn in the resistivity is observed in x = 0.56 below ~2 T g , suggesting strong spin fluctuation. This fluctuation is suppressed by the application of magnetic field, which is reflected in the observation of negative magnetoresistance. The unusual properties that emerge due to Mn doping are discussed.

Spin Glass Behavior and Giant Magnetoresistance via Aliovalent Fe/Ni Alloying in Amorphous Tetrathiafulvalene-Tetrathiolate Coordination Polymers

The discovery of materials with programmable combinations of charge transport and magnetic properties is a major goal in synthetic chemistry. Molecular materials, such as coordination polymers (CPs), are emerging candidates in this field due to their synthetic modularity. While there are many conductive or magnetic CPs, single-component examples with both properties are still emerging. Here, in this work, we demonstrate how alloying paramagnetic Fe(III) centers into a highly conductive Ni-based CP results in novel amorphous materials with high conductivity and giant magnetoresistance. Aliovalent doping with paramagnetic Fe centers engenders spin-glass transitions, while Ni and the strong π-stacking interactions of tetrathiafulvalene-2,3,6,7-tetrathiolate (TTFtt) ligands support conductivity. Ni 0.69 Fe 0.31 TTFtt has σ ≈ 200 S/cm and a 1.8 K magnetoresistance of −52% at 5 T, among the largest for any coordination solid. This work demonstrates not only how magnetic properties can be rationally incorporated into conductive CPs, but also an unexpected potential for amorphous materials in spintronic applications.
