Multi-scale ordering in highly stretchable polymer semiconducting films

Stretchable semiconducting polymers have been developed as a key component to enable skin-like wearable electronics, but their electrical performance must be improved to enable more advanced functionalities. Here, we report a solution processing approach that can achieve multi-scale ordering and alignment of conjugated polymers in stretchable semiconductors to substantially improve their charge carrier mobility. Using solution shearing with a patterned microtrench coating blade, macroscale alignment of conjugated-polymer nanostructures was achieved along the charge transport direction. In conjunction, the nanoscale spatial confinement aligns chain conformation and promotes short-range π–π ordering, substantially reducing the energetic barrier for charge carrier transport. As a result, the mobilities of stretchable conjugated-polymer films have been enhanced up to threefold and maintained under a strain up to 100%. This method may also serve as the basis for large-area manufacturing of stretchable semiconducting films, as demonstrated by the roll-to-roll coating of metre-scale films.

Highly stretchable organic electrochemical transistors with strain-resistant performance

Realizing fully stretchable electronic materials is central to advancing new types of mechanically agile and skin-integrable optoelectronic device technologies. Here we demonstrate a materials design concept combining an organic semiconductor film with a honeycomb porous structure with biaxially prestretched platform that enables high-performance organic electrochemical transistors with a charge transport stability over 30-140% tensional strain, limited only by metal contact fatigue. In this work, the prestretched honeycomb semiconductor channel of donor-acceptor polymer poly(2,5-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)-2,5-diketo-pyrrolopyrrole-alt-2,5-bis(3-triethyleneglycoloxy-thiophen-2-yl) exhibits high ion uptake and completely stable electrochemical and mechanical properties over 1,500 redox cycles with 10(4) stretching cycles under 30% strain. Invariant electrocardiogram recording cycles and synapse responses under varying strains, along with mechanical finite element analysis, underscore that the present stretchable organic electrochemical transistor design strategy is suitable for diverse applications requiring stable signal output under deformation with low power dissipation and mechanical robustness. Highly stretchable organic electrochemical transistors with stable charge transport under severe tensional strains are demonstrated using a honeycomb semiconducting polymer morphology, thereby enabling controllable signal output for diverse stretchable bioelectronic applications.

Dynamic disulfide bond networks enable self-healable and mechanically resilient intrinsically stretchable organic solar cells

A dynamic disulfide network introduced into donor/acceptor blends enables room-temperature self-healing and mechanical resilience in intrinsically stretchable organic solar cells, achieving performance recovery after high mechanical strain. The development of intrinsically stretchable organic solar cells (IS-OSCs) faces significant challenges in balancing mechanical durability and optoelectronic performance. Conventional π-conjugated polymer-based donor/acceptor blend films often exhibit limited stretchability and irreversible performance degradation under mechanical strain. To address these limitations, we propose a novel self-healable donor/acceptor blended film with a dual-network morphology, achieved by incorporating a dynamic disulfide bond-based crosslinked network into the bulk-heterojunction film. The resulting thin films demonstrate a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.39% in rigid OSC devices and a fracture strain of 15.6%. Remarkably, the IS-OSCs retain 80% of their initial PCE under 30% strain and exhibit performance recovery after multiple stretch-release cycles at 40% strain through a room-temperature self-healing process. This work provides a proof-of-concept for highly stretchable and durable IS-OSCs, offering valuable insights for advancing the field of wearable energy systems, adaptive solar textiles, and sustainable electronics.

Intrinsically stretchable neuromorphic devices for on-body processing of health data with artificial intelligence

For leveraging wearable technologies to advance precision medicine, personalized and learning-based analysis of continuously acquired health data is indispensable, for which neuromorphic computing could provide the most efficient implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) data processing. For realizing on-body neuromorphic computing, skin-like stretchability is required, but yet to be combined with the suite of desired neuromorphic metrics, including linear, symmetric weight update, and sufficient state retention, for achieving high computing efficiency. Here, we report an intrinsically stretchable neuromorphic device based on an electrochemical transistor, which provides a large number (>800) of states, linear/symmetric weight update, excellent switching endurance (>100 million), good state retention (>10 4 s), together with high stretchability of 100% strain. Further integration into a prototype array successfully realized the implementation of vector-matrix multiplication even at 100% strain. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility of implementing AI-based classification of health signals (as exemplified by electrocardiograms) with a high accuracy that is minimally influenced by the stretched state of the neuromorphic hardware. Finally, this work breaks the ground for combining AI data analysis into skin-like wearable electronics for achieving human-integrated/mimetic intelligent systems.

Effect of Nonconjugated Spacers on Mechanical Properties of Semiconducting Polymers for Stretchable Transistors

Abstract Nonconjugated segments in polymer semiconductors have been utilized to improve the processability of semiconducting polymers. Recently, several reports have described the improvement of stretchability of polymer semiconductors by incorporating nonconjugated spacers. However, the effect of relative flexibility of such conjugation breakers on mechanical and electrical properties has not yet been studied systematically. Here, conjugation breakers with different chain length and rigidity are incorporated into the backbone of diketopyrrolopyrrole‐based semiconductors. Interestingly, it is observed that the longer and more flexible conjugation breakers result in greater ductility and lower elastic modulus without significantly affecting mobility. The enhancement of stretchability is attributed to the reduced modulus and the decrease in crystallinity, as confirmed by X‐ray diffraction. With this newly established molecular design, transistors are prepared with a semiconducting polymer containing dodecyl segments as conjugation breakers. It is observed that this polymer retains a mobility of >0.36 cm 2 V −1 s −1 at 100% strain, and after 100 cycles at 50% strain. Finally, its high stability against strain is also observed with a fully stretchable transistor fabricated. Taken together, the above results indicate that molecular engineering of conjugated polymers, i.e., by incorporating suitable conjugation breakers, can effectively tune mechanical properties without significantly compromising their electrical properties.

Autonomous reinforcement learning agent for stretchable kirigami design of 2D materials

Abstract Mechanical behavior of 2D materials such as MoS 2 can be tuned by the ancient art of kirigami. Experiments and atomistic simulations show that 2D materials can be stretched more than 50% by strategic insertion of cuts. However, designing kirigami structures with desired mechanical properties is highly sensitive to the pattern and location of kirigami cuts. We use reinforcement learning (RL) to generate a wide range of highly stretchable MoS 2 kirigami structures. The RL agent is trained by a small fraction (1.45%) of molecular dynamics simulation data, randomly sampled from a search space of over 4 million candidates for MoS 2 kirigami structures with 6 cuts. After training, the RL agent not only proposes 6-cut kirigami structures that have stretchability above 45%, but also gains mechanistic insight to propose highly stretchable (above 40%) kirigami structures consisting of 8 and 10 cuts from a search space of billion candidates as zero-shot predictions.

Strain-insensitive intrinsically stretchable transistors and circuits

An all-elastomer strain engineering approach, which uses patterned elastomer layers with tunable stiffnesses, can be used to create intrinsically stretchable transistor arrays with a device density of 340 transistors cm -2 and strain insensitivity of less than 5% performance variation when stretched to 100% strain. Intrinsically stretchable electronics can form intimate interfaces with the human body, creating devices that could be used to monitor physiological signals without constraining movement. However, mechanical strain invariably leads to the degradation of the electronic properties of the devices. Here we show that strain-insensitive intrinsically stretchable transistor arrays can be created using an all-elastomer strain engineering approach, in which the patterned elastomer layers with tunable stiffnesses are incorporated into the transistor structure. By varying the cross-linking density of the elastomers, areas of increased local stiffness are introduced, reducing strain on the active regions of the devices. This approach can be readily incorporated into existing fabrication processes, and we use it to create arrays with a device density of 340 transistors cm -2 and a strain insensitivity of less than 5% performance variation when stretched to 100% strain. We also show that it can be used to fabricate strain-insensitive circuit elements, including NOR gates, ring oscillators and high-gain amplifiers for the stable monitoring of electrophysiological signals.

A stretchable and strain-unperturbed pressure sensor for motion interference–free tactile monitoring on skins

A stretchable pressure sensor is a necessary tool for perceiving physical interactions that take place on soft/deformable skins present in human bodies, prosthetic limbs, or soft robots. However, all existing types of stretchable pressure sensors have an inherent limitation, which is the interference of stretching with pressure sensing accuracy. Here, we present a design for a highly stretchable and highly sensitive pressure sensor that can provide unaltered sensing performance under stretching, which is realized through the synergistic creations of an ionic capacitive sensing mechanism and a mechanically hierarchical microstructure. Via this optimized structure, our sensor exhibits 98% strain insensitivity up to 50% strain and a low pressure detection limit of 0.2 Pa. With the capability to provide all the desired characteristics for quantitative pressure sensing on a deformable surface, this sensor has been used to realize the accurate sensation of physical interactions on human or soft robotic skin.

A class of devices enabled by ionic conductors is highly stretchable, fully transparent to light of all colors, biocompatible or biodegradable, and capable of operation at frequencies beyond 10 kilohertz and voltages above 10 kilovolts. These devices enabled by ionic conductors can be used as large strain actuators, full-range loudspeakers, as strain or pressure sensors and as stretchable interconnects. The electromechanical transduction is achieved without electrochemical reaction. When large stretchability and high optical transmittance are required, the ionic conductors have lower sheet resistance than all existing electronic conductors.

Linking constituent phase properties to ductility and edge stretchability of two DP 980 steels

Two DP 980 steels were characterized with multiple methods to determine its microstructure characteristics, tensile properties and edge stretchability. The first (DP980-B) is a commercial grade DP980 steel produced by AK Steel, while the second (DP980-T) is a modification of the first one by a tempering process. Both contain two individual phases: ferrite and martensite with body centered cubic (BCC) and tetragonal (BCT) crystal structure respectively. ASTM standard tensile tests were performed for both materials, revealing that DP980-B has higher work hardening and larger total elongation than DP980-T. Standard hole piercing and subsequent hole expansion and extrusion tests were also performed. The critical hole expansion ratio (HER) of hole pierced sheet at different nominal clearances, on the other hand, show an opposite trend: the HER of DP980-T almost doubles that of DP980-B. This indicates the tensile ductility and edge stretchability are determined by different mechanisms due to different deformation modes. The ductility of sheet metal during uniaxial tension is determined by deformation instability, i.e. necking, due to less constraint at the region of deformation and fracture will occur quickly after necking. The contribution of post-necking deformation to the total elongation is insignificant for the high strength grades such as DP980 steels. The ductility during hole-expansion, however, is mainly determined by material fracture behavior that is dependent on phase property disparity and material intrinsic fracture parameters. With the individual phase properties for both DP steels determined by in situ tensile tests under high energy X-ray diffraction, the results show that DP980-T steel has lower property disparities between the two phases than DP980-B steel, due to the tempering process. This explains why the DP980-T steel has higher HER than DP980-B steel: lower phase disparity will lead to less local deformation during loading. The higher work hardening rate for DP980-B steel contributes to its higher uniform elongation compared with DP980-T steel based on the maximum load condition of deformation instability. An integrated finite element simulation framework for studying hole expansion is also presented here, based on the calculated individual phase properties from the combined high energy x-ray diffraction (HEXRD) and elastic plastic self-consistent modeling. The simulation results correlate well with the experimental results on the HER difference between the two materials.

Chain rigidity controlled aggregation ability and solid-state microstructures for efficient stretchable conjugated polymer films

Stretchable conjugated polymer films with good electrical performance under mechanical deformation are highly desirable for soft electronics. However, the mechanical and electrical properties of these films, particularly in conjugated polymer:elastomer blends, are not fully understood at molecular level. Here, this study explores the relationships among molecular structure, aggregation ability, film microstructure, and the electrical/mechanical properties of three diketopyrrolopyrrole-based conjugated polymers (P1, P2, P3) with decreasing backbone rigidity and their corresponding polymer:elastomer blends. The most flexible polymer P3 shows strong aggregation, which forms highly crystalline fibers to produce fragile neat film and produces large isolated crystallites restricting charge transport in blend film. As chain rigidity increases, the P1 and P2 polymers show weaker aggregation, and produce smaller crystallites in neat films with enhanced ductility. P1 and P2 based blend films display nanocrystallites polymer networks with dispersed elastomer domains. As a result, we achieved near-constant charge mobility before and after stretching under 50 % strain for P2-based blend films with well-controlled pathways for both charge transport and energy dissipation. This study demonstrates the critical role of backbone rigidity in regulating the properties of stretchable conjugated polymer films, paving the way for more reliable and deformable materials in soft electronics.

Aligned Conjugated Polymer Nanofiber Networks in an Elastomer Matrix for High-Performance Printed Stretchable Electronics

Conjugated polymer films are promising in wearable X-ray detection. However, achieving optimal film microstructure possessing good electrical and detection performance under large deformation via scalable printing remains challenging. Herein, we report bar-coated high-performance stretchable films based on a conjugated polymer P(TDPP-Se) and elastomer SEBS blend by optimizing the solution-processing conditions. The moderate preaggregation in solution and prolonged growth dynamics from a solvent mixture with limited dissolving capacity is critical to forming aligned P(TDPP-Se) chains/crystalline nanofibers in the SEBS phase with enhanced π–π stacking for charge transport and stress dissipation. The film shows a large elongation at break of >400% and high mobilities of 5.29 cm 2 V –1 s –1 at 0% strain and 1.66 cm 2 V –1 s –1 over 500 stretch–release cycles at 50% strain, enabling good X-ray imaging with a high sensitivity of 1501.52 μC Gy air –1 cm –2 . Finally, our work provides a morphology control strategy toward high-performance conjugated polymer film-based stretchable electronics.

Stretchable Photodiodes with Polymer-Engineered Semiconductor Nanowires for Wearable Photoplethysmography

Healthcare systems worldwide have been stressed to provide sufficient resources to serve the increasing and aging population in our society. The situation became more challenging at the time of pandemic. Technology advancement, especially the adoption of wearable health monitoring devices, has provided an important supplement to current clinical equipment. Most health monitoring devices are rigid, however, human tissues are soft. Such a difference has prohibited intimate contact between the two and jeopardized wearing comfortableness, which hurdles measurement accuracy especially during longtime usage. Here, in this work, we report a soft and stretchable photodiode that can conformally adhere onto the human body without any pressure and measure cardiovascular variables for an extended period with higher reliability than commercial devices. The photodiode used a composite light absorber consisting of an organic bulk heterojunction embedded into an elastic polymer matrix. It is discovered that the elastic polymer matrix not only improves the morphology of the bulk heterojunction for obtaining the desired mechanical properties but also alters its electronic band structure and improves the electrical properties that lead to a reduced dark current and enhanced photovoltage in the stretchable photodiode. The work has demonstrated high fidelity measurements and longtime monitoring of heat rate variability and oxygen saturation, potentially enabling next-generation wearable photoplethysmography devices for point-of-care diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases in a more accessible and affordable way.
