Virginia Tech Center for Neutrino Physics HEP Umbrella. Final report

This DOE-supported project of Virginia Tech's Center for Neutrino Physics (VT-CNP), funded for a two-year period from July 1, 2017 through April 30, 2019. Supported the efforts our group in the Intensity Frontier, Theory programs. The Intensity Frontier program Prof. Link and his group included continued efforts on the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment, starting of a new effort with the COHERENT collaboration studying coherent elastic neutrino scattering at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Spallation Neutrino Source, and an advanced reactor neutrino detector development effort known as CHANDLER, which was only partially supported by this grant. In the theory/phenomenology program of Profs. Huber and Horiuchi and their groups pursued independent (but interconnected) research activities including astrophysical searches for particle dark matter with a focus on combining gamma rays with multiple probes, supernova neutrinos, neutrino phenomenology with an emphasis on physics beyond three flavor oscillation, and further development of the GLoBES neutrino oscillation sensitivity tool kit. This group has strong synergy between its efforts in neutrino phenomenology and neutrino-related experimental research, which is the intellectual foundation for the Center for Neutrino Physics.

Isolated Building Wake Experiment At Texas Tech University’s Wind Engineering Research Field Lab

Texas Tech University’s (TTU’s) Wind Engineering Research Field Lab (WERFL) building is an idealized rectangular building on the scale of a typical suburban house. It is surrounded almost entirely by unobstructed planes and is built on a turn table. WERFL is ideal for providing measurements of an idealized building under real-world conditions including atmospheric stability and variable relative wind angles. The intent of this data set is for verification and validation of computational fluid dynamics model simulations of flow around buildings. The primary focus of this dataset features 24 3D sonic anemometers (20 downwind and 4 upwind) and 10 2D sonic anemometers (9 downwind and 1 upwind) located in the immediate vicinity of the WERFL building. It also includes a variety of instruments intended to measure the ambient meteorological parameters and the undisturbed wind profile.

Georgia Tech Accelerated, Compressed, and Regularized Compute of Kinetic-based PDEs (Final Report)

This report summarizes the collaborative effort between Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Georgia Tech to enhance the BoBa library for tensor train computation in PDE solvers, with a target on kinetic equations and their continuum limits. We aimed to reduce computational cost and memory usage by replacing traditional array-based computations with tensor trains. We examined the compressibility of time-evolving solutions to the Euler equations with discontinuities. We also explored using the first invsicid and linear regularization of the compressible flow equations via the information geometric regularization (IGR). We explored this in a tensor train formulation. To identify that inverse terms in the IGR equations pose problems for tensor train formulations and investigate efficient methods for batched inversion of tensor trains.

Summary results from the NASA Tech House one year live-in

The NASA Tech House was designed and constructed at the Langley Research Center, Hampton, Va., to demonstrate and evaluate new technology potentially applicable for conservation of energy and resources and for improvements in safety and security in a single-family residence. All technology items, including solar energy systems and a waste water reuse system, were evaluated under actual living conditions for a one-year period with a family of four living in the house in their normal life style. Results are presented which show overall savings in energy and resources compared to requirements for a defined similar conventional house under the same conditions. Also included are general operational experience and performance data for all the various items and systems of technology incorporated into the house design.
