Observation of Long-Range Wakefield Effects Generated in an Off-Resonance Tesla-Type Cavity

The interest in controlling emittance dilution effects due to off-axis beam transport in accelerator cavities and the resulting dipolar modes is especially important for the facilities with lower emittance beams. The Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) facility has a unique configuration of two single cavities after the photocathode rf gun followed by a cryomodule. The second capture cavity (CC2) was run 15 kHz off resonance and without rf power while a 25-MeV beam was injected into it. The beam centroid effects were tracked by 10 rf button BPMs with bunch-by-bunch position readout capability downstream in a 12-m drift. Possible LRW effects seemed to dominate our previously observed near-resonant HOM effects at mode 14 in this cavity. This mode also shifted in frequency compared to that of the tuned case based on direct measurements. Submacropulse vertical position slewing of 1400 microns at 11 m downstream was observed with a 125 pC/bunch, 50 bunches per macropulse, and 25-MeV beam. The y-position slew amplitudes as a function of z were also measured. Horizontal positions also showed a slew effect. Both are emittance-dilution effects which one wants to mitigate.

What is needed for BISCO to work in a dipole insert for 20 tesla hybrid accelerator magnets

Developing HTS dipole inserts producing fields larger than 5 T within 15 T Nb3Sn outserts is necessary to generate 20 T or higher fields for future high energy colliders. Dipole inserts based on the cos-theta coil geometry with various stress management concepts and Bi2212 super-conducting strand and cable are being developed at Fermilab both within and beyond the U.S. national effort. On paper, the potential reach for the maximum magnetic field in existing or planned Nb3Sn outserts is close to 20 T, thanks to the progress realized in Bi2212 wires’ critical current density. To achieve the Bi2212 potential in accelerator magnets, however, a number of technological challenges still have to be faced. These for instance include the need to design billets that are adequate for Rutherford cabling; developing insulation processes and materials that prevent leaks, which reduce transport current and increase the risk of shorts; control and limit Bi2212 coils’ stresses and strains; reconsider the Split Melt Process (SMP) to lower costs and simplify the processing. This paper reviews Bi2212 conductor properties and coil technolo-gies, and proposes new ideas to face the challenges that Bi2212 still presents as an accelerator magnet conductor.

Secure Communications Concept and API Concept for Integrating XENDEE Positronix with TESLA PowerPack System at Site 300 (Final Deliverable)

The CleanStart DERMS project focuses on the management of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) for enhanced distribution grid resilience. The demonstration site has changed from Riverside Public Utility to the LLNS Site 300 DERS demonstration site. This project has so far focused only on device level controllers and local area controllers. These controllers potentially lack the ability to perform supervisory control and grid interactive control functions, essential for grid-level optimal DER management. This project seeks to close that gap in development of secure communication concept and appropriate Application Programming Interfaces (API) to enable integration with DERs, device level and local area controllers, such as Distributed Energy Resources Management System (DERMS).
