Unmanned aircraft system (UAS) detection and assessment via temporal intensity aliasing

A method and system for temporal frequency analysis for identification of unmanned aircraft systems. The method includes obtaining a sequence of video image frames and providing a pixel from an output frame of the video; generating a fluctuating pixel value vector; examining the fluctuating pixel value vector over a period of time; obtaining the frequency information present in the pixel fluctuations; summing the frequency coefficients for the vectorized pixel values from the fluctuating pixel value vector; obtaining an image representing a two dimensional space based on the summed center frequency coefficients; generating a series of still frames equal to a summation of the center frequency coefficients for pixel variations; and combining the temporal information into spatial locations in a matrix to provide a single image containing the spatial and temporal information present in the sequence of video image frame.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Integration in the National Airspace System (NAS) Project

Over the past 5 years, the UAS integration into the NAS project has worked to reduce technical barriers to integration. A major focus of this work has been in support of RTCA SC-228. This committee has recently published the first UAS integration minimum performance standards (MOPS). This work has spanned detect and avoid (DAA) as well as command and control comm datalinks. I will discuss DAA efforts with focus on the human systems work. I will discuss how automation was discussed and addressed within this context. ICAO stood up a remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) panel in 2014. They have developed an RPAS manual and are now working to revise existing annexes and standards and recommended practices. The Human In The System (HITS) has worked to infuse human factors guidelines into those documents. I will discuss that effort as well as how ICAO has defined and address autonomy. There is a great deal of interest in the control of multiple vehicles by a single operator. The UAS EXCOM Science and Research Panel (SARP) is holding a workshop on this topic in late June. I will discuss research performed on this topic when I worked for the Army and on-going work within the division and a NATO working group on Human-Autonomy Teaming.

Usability Test of a Prototype UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) Awareness Interface for Public Users

A tool to give the public a window into Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Traffic Management (UTM) operations was created from an existing data collection tool. The interface included a map and a table showing details about UAS operations that could be queried in a number of ways. Eleven participants attended the study, successfully completing a 19-item task set in about 30 minutes. They correctly found information for 87% of the non-subjective tasks at a rate of around a minute per task, and rated the usability of the tool at the end of the session above the industry benchmark. Participants gave favorable reviews of the "public portal tool", even reporting that they would be satisfied with less information that it presented. There were one or two elements of the display that users found distracting and some navigation functions that need improvement, but on balance, the public representatives liked the features they saw in, and had few criticisms of, the public portal tool. One important issue for the small Unmanned Aerial System community to resolve will be how much or how little information should be available about UTM operations to members of the public.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Integration in the National Airspace System (NAS) Project - Gen-4 and Gen-5 Radio Plans

NASA's UAS Integration in the NAS project, has partnered with Rockwell Collins to develop a concept Control and Non-Payload Communication (CNPC) system prototype radio, operating on recently allocated UAS frequency spectrum bands. This prototype radio is being used to validate initial proposed performance requirements for UAS control communications. This presentation will give an overview of the current plans for the prototype radio development.

Assuring Intelligent Systems: Contingency Management for UAS

Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) collaborate with humans to operate in diverse, safety-critical applications. However, assurance technologies need to be integrated into the design process in order to guarantee safe behavior, thereby enabling UAS operations in the National Airspace System (NAS). In this paper, formal methods are integrated with learning-enabled systems representations. The generation and representation of knowledge are captured via monadic second-order logic rules in the cognitive architecture Soar. These rules are translated into timed automata, and a proof of correctness for the translation is provided so that safety and liveness properties can be checked in the formal verification environment Uppaal. This approach is agnostic to the learning mechanism used to generate the learned rules (e.g., chunking, etc.). An example of a fault-tolerant, learning-enabled UAS deciding which of four contingency procedures to execute under a lost link scenario while overflying an urban area is used to illustrate the approach.

Responding To A Downed Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Platform

A drone may be forced down as part of a kinetic Counter-UAS action or as a spoof signal with a command to land immediately. A drone could also be incidentally discovered by an employee or by a random patrol. In each case, the platform should be considered a suspicious package until it can be determined to be nonhazardous by qualified personnel.

Interactive Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Security Workshop

The goal of this workshop is to role play and walk through various UAS incursion scenarios to: 1. Recognize the complex interactions between physical protection, response, and UAS technologies in a nuclear security event; 2. Identify potential regulatory and legal complications dealing with UAS as aircraft; 3. Identify communication/coordination touch points with facility security and law enforcement; 4. Identify possible physical security and response strategies to help mitigate UAS impact.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)/Camera Technologies to Detect Avian Events and Other Environmental Measures at Utility- Scale Power Plants (Final Report)

The goal of this project was to develop and validate two complementary, cost-effective remote sensing technologies to monitor avian fatalities at utility-scale solar facilities: fixed platform (Animal Activity Monitoring-AAM) and aerial-based (Uncrewed Aircraft Systems-UAS). This project used these features with machine learning to automate the detection of avian carcasses and nests at solar facilities.
