Differentiating Ligand Tailoring and Cation Incorporation as Strategies for Tuning Heterobimetallic Cerium Complexes

Tuning of redox-active complexes featuring metals with high coordination numbers by incorporation of secondary redox-inactive cations has received far less attention than it deserves. Here, appending moderate steric bulk to a tripodal ligand framework has been tested for its influence on secondary-cation-driven structural and electrochemical tuning of cerium, a lanthanide that tends to adopt high coordination numbers. A quasi -C 3 -symmetric cerium(III) complex denoted [Ce] has been prepared that features pendant benzyloxy groups, and this work demonstrates that this species offers a site capable of binding single Na + or Ca 2+ ions. Electrochemical and UV-visible spectroscopic studies reveal equilibrium binding affinity of [Ce] for Na + in acetonitrile solvent, contrasting with tight binding of all cations in all other previously studied systems of this type. The modulated cation binding can be attributed to the bulky benzyloxy groups, which impact the thermodynamics of cation binding but do not impede the formation of cerium centers with coordination number 8 upon binding of either Na + or Ca2 + . Finally, the Ce(IV/III) reduction potential was found to be tunable under the equilibrium binding conditions, highlighting the potentially significant role that controlled structural changes can play in modulating the solution properties of heterobimetallic complexes.

X-ray and Optical Circular Dichroism as Local and Global Ultrafast Chiral Probes of [12]Helicene Racemization

Optical circular dichroism (OCD) is a well-established technique for probing molecular chirality typically in the UV-visible window. Although molecular chirality is usually related to a chiral center, it can alternatively describe a global structure. The electronic transitions are then delocalized and OCD is said to probe the global chirality. Recent advances controlling the polarization and spatial structure of X-ray beams have led to novel spectroscopic techniques such as X-ray circular dichroism (XCD), which can exploit the localized nature of the X-ray electronic transitions. XCD is thus sensitive to local structures and the relevant chirality probed with it can be referred as local. Here, we use the racemization mechanism of the [12]Helicene as a model to assess the capabilities of OCD and XCD as probes of global and local chiralities. In conclusion, our simulations suggest that XCD is a reliable spectroscopic technique for probing the local chirality of molecules, suggesting the further development of this experimental technique.

Triple Layer Tungsten Trioxide, Graphene, and Polyaniline Composite Films for Combined Energy Storage and Electrochromic Applications

Different polyaniline (PANI)-based hybrid films were successfully prepared by electro-polymerizing aniline monomers onto pre-spin-coated indium tin oxide (ITO) glass slides with WO 3 , graphene, or WO 3 /graphene films. Comparing with pristine PANI, the shifts of the characteristic peaks of PANI-based nanocomposites in UV-visible absorption spectra (UV-vis) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) indicate the chemical interaction between the PANI matrix and the nanofillers, which is also confirmed by the scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. Corresponding coloration efficiencies were obtained for the WO 3 /PANI (40.42 cm 2 C -1 ), graphene/PANI (78.64 cm 2 C -1 ), and WO 3 /graphene/PANI (67.47 cm 2 C -1 ) films, higher than that of the pristine PANI film (29.4 cm 2 C -1 ), suggesting positive effects of the introduced nanofillers on the electrochromic performance. The areal capacitances of the films were observed to increase following the order as bare WO 3 < WO 3 /graphene < pristine PANI < WO 3 /PANI < graphene/PANI < WO 3 /graphene/PANI films from both the cyclic voltammogram (CV) and galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) results. The enhanced energy storage and electrochromic performances of the PANI-based nanocomposite films can be attributed to the capacitance contributions of the introduced nanofillers, increased PANI amount, and the rougher morphology due to the embedment of the nanofillers into the PANI matrix. This extraordinary energy storage and electrochromic performances of the WO 3 /graphene/PANI film make it a promising candidate for combined electrochromic and energy storage applications.
