Isometries and the double copy

In the standard derivation of the Kerr-Schild double copy, the geodicity of the Kerr-Schild vector and the stationarity of the spacetime are presented as assumptions that are necessary for the single copy to satisfy Maxwell’s equations. However, it is well known that the vacuum Einstein equations imply that the Kerr-Schild vector is geodesic and shear-free, and that the spacetime possesses a distinguished vector field that is simultaneously a Killing vector of the full spacetime and the flat background, but need not be timelike with respect to the background metric. We show that the gauge field obtained by contracting this distinguished Killing vector with the Kerr-Schild graviton solves the vacuum Maxwell equations, and that this definition of the Kerr-Schild double copy implies the Weyl double copy when the spacetime is Petrov type D. When the Killing vector is taken to be timelike with respect to the background metric, we recover the familiar Kerr-Schild double copy, but the prescription is well defined for any vacuum Kerr-Schild spacetime and we present new examples where the Killing vector is null or spacelike. While most examples of physical interest are type D, vacuum Kerr-Schild spacetimes are generically of Petrov type II. We present a straightforward example of such a spacetime and study its double copy structure. Our results apply to real Lorentzian spacetimes as well as complex spacetimes and real spacetimes with Kleinian signature, and provide a simple correspondence between real and self-dual vacuum Kerr-Schild spacetimes. This correspondence allows us to study the double copy structure of a self-dual analog of the Kerr spacetime. We provide evidence that this spacetime may be diffeomorphic to the self-dual Taub-NUT solution.

Breaking mirror twin color

We investigate simple extensions of the Mirror Twin Higgs model in which the twin color gauge symmetry and the discrete Z2 mirror symmetry are spontaneously broken. This is accomplished in a minimal way by introducing a single new colored triplet, sextet, or octet scalar field and its twin along with a suitable scalar potential. This spontaneous Z2 breaking allows for a phenomenologically viable alignment of the electroweak vacuum, and leads to dramatic differences between the visible and mirror sectors with regard to the residual gauge symmetries at low energies, color confinement scales, and particle spectra. In particular, several of our models feature a remnant SU(2) or SO(3) twin color gauge symmetry with a very low confinement scale in comparison to ΛQCD. Furthermore, couplings between the colored scalar and matter provide a new dynamical source of twin fermion masses, and due to the mirror symmetry, these lead to a variety of correlated visible sector effects that can be probed through precision measurements and collider searches.

Riemann-Hilbert correspondence and blown up surface defects

The relationship of two dimensional quantum field theory and isomonodromic deformations of Fuchsian systems has a long history. Recently four-dimensional N = 2 gauge theories joined the party in a multitude of roles. In this paper we study the vacuum expectation values of intersecting half-BPS surface defects in SU(2) theory with N f = 4 fundamental hypermultiplets. We show they form a horizontal section of a Fuchsian system on a sphere with 5 regular singularities, calculate the monodromy, and define the associated isomonodromic tau-function. Using the blowup formula in the presence of half-BPS surface defects, initiated in the companion paper, we obtain the GIL formula, establishing an unexpected relation of the topological string/free fermion regime of supersymmetric gauge theory to classical integrability.

Gluonic Structure from Instantons

The instanton vacuum provides an effective description of chiral symmetry breaking by local topological fluctuations of the gauge fields, as observed in lattice QCD simulations. The resulting effective dynamics at momenta below 1/$\bar{ρ}$ ≈ 0.6 GeV explains the basic features of light-quark correlation functions and is used extensively in studies of hadron structure. The instanton fields also make definite contributions to the gluonic structure of light hadrons, as expressed in the matrix elements of composite quark– gluon or gluon operators. The article reviews the gluonic structure of light hadrons (nucleon, pion) induced by instantons. This includes: (i) twist-2 parton distributions and momentum sum rule; (ii) twist-3 angular momentum and spin-orbit interactions; (iii) twist-3 and twist-4 quark–gluon correlations and power corrections; (iv) trace anomaly and hadron mass decomposition; (v) scalar gluon form factors and mechanical properties; (vi) axial anomaly and pseudoscalar gluon form factors. It also discusses possible further applications of the methods and recent developments including gauge field configurations beyond instantons.

Entanglement entropy of a color flux tube in (2+1)D Yang-Mills theory

We construct a novel flux tube entanglement entropy (FTE 2 ), defined as the excess entanglement entropy relative to the vacuum of a region of color flux stretching between a heavy quark-anti-quark pair in pure gauge Yang-Mills theory. We show that FTE 2 can be expressed in terms of correlators of Polyakov loops, is manifestly gauge-invariant, and therefore free of the ambiguities in computations of the entanglement entropy in gauge theories related to the choice of the center algebra. Employing the replica trick, we compute FTE 2 for SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in (2+1)D and demonstrate that it is finite in the continuum limit. We explore the properties of FTE 2 for a half-slab geometry, which allows us to vary the width and location of the slab, and the extent to which the slab cross-cuts the color flux tube. Following the intuition provided by computations of FTE 2 in (1+1)D, and in a thin string model, we examine the extent to which our FTE 2 results can be interpreted as the sum of an internal color entropy and a vibrational entropy corresponding to the transverse excitations of the string.

Symmetric Mass Generation in Lattice Gauge Theory

We construct a four-dimensional lattice gauge theory in which fermions acquire mass without breaking symmetries as a result of gauge interactions. Our model consists of reduced staggered fermions transforming in the bifundamental representation of an SU(2)×SU(2) gauge symmetry. This fermion representation ensures that single-site bilinear mass terms vanish identically. A symmetric four-fermion operator is however allowed, and we give numerical results that show that a condensate of this operator develops in the vacuum.

Color halo scenario of charmonium-like hybrids

The internal structures of J PC =1 -- ,(o,1,2) -+ charmonium-like hybrids are investigated under lattice QCD in the quenched approximation. We define the Bethe-Salpeter wave function (Φn(r)) in the Coulomb gauge as the matrix element of a spatially extended hybrid-like operator ($\bar{c}cg$) between the vacuum and n-th state for J PC , with r being the spatial separation between a localized $\bar{c}c$ component and the chromomagnetic strength tensor. These wave functions exhibit some similarities for states with the aforementioned different quantum numbers, and their r-behaviors (no node for the ground states and one node for the first excited states) imply that r can be a meaningful dynamical variable for these states. Additionally, the mass splittings of the ground states and first excited states of charmonium-like hybrids in these channels are obtained for the first time to be approximately 1.2-1.4 GeV. These results do not support the flux-tube description of heavy-quarkonium-like hybrids in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. In contrast, a charmonium-like hybrid can be viewed as a "color halo" charmonium for which a relatively localized color octet $\bar{c}c$ is surrounded by gluonic degrees of freedom, which can readily decay into a charmonium state along with one or more light hadrons. The color halo picture is compatible with the decay properties of Y (42600) and suggests LHCb and BelleII to search for (0,1,2) -+ charmonium-like hybrids in Xc0,1,2N and J/ψω(φ) final states.

Gauge invariance and color charge fluctuations

The nature of confinement is connected with color charge. Unfortunately, the color charge densities in QCD, the Noether charge densities associated with the global color invariance, are not invariant under local color rotations. This implies that the expectation values of the net color charge in any region of any physical state in QCD—states that satisfy the color Gauss law—are automatically zero for all components of color. In this Letter, it is shown that the expectation value of the square of the net color charge in a region—a measure of the color charge fluctuations—is necessarily nonzero when evaluated in physical states and the result, while depending on the scheme and scale by which the theory is regulated, is gauge invariant. This holds despite the formal lack of gauge invariance of the operator. Moreover, there is a particular combination of the color charge fluctuations for the vacuum and for a system describable by a nontrivial density matrix that is independent that has a well-defined continuum limit.

Covariant phase space and soft factorization in non-Abelian gauge theories

We perform a careful study of the infrared sector of massless non-abelian gauge theories in four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime using the covariant phase space formalism, taking into account the boundary contributions arising from the gauge sector of the theory. Upon quantization, we show that the boundary contributions lead to an infinite degeneracy of the vacua. The Hilbert space of the vacuum sector is not only shown to be remarkably simple, but also universal. We derive a Ward identity that relates the n-point amplitude between two generic in- and out-vacuum states to the one computed in standard QFT. In addition, we demonstrate that the familiar single soft gluon theorem and multiple consecutive soft gluon theorem are consequences of the Ward identity.

Tailoring On-Surface Molecular Reactions and Assembly through Hydrogen-Modified Synthesis: From Triarylamine Monomer to 2D Covalent Organic Framework

Relative to conventional wet-chemical synthesis techniques, on-surface synthesis of organic networks in ultrahigh vacuum has few control parameters. The molecular deposition rate and substrate temperature are typically the only synthesis variables to be adjusted dynamically. Here we demonstrate that reducing conditions in the vacuum environment can be created and controlled without dedicated sources-relying only on backfilled hydrogen gas and ion gauge filaments-and can dramatically influence the Ullmann-like on-surface reaction used for synthesizing two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs). Using tribromo dimethylmethylene-bridged triphenylamine ((Br 3 )DTPA) as monomer precursors, we find that atomic hydrogen (H*) blocks aryl-aryl bond formation to such an extent that we suspect this reaction may be a factor in limiting the ultimate size of 2D COFs created through on-surface synthesis. Conversely, we show that control of the relative monomer and hydrogen fluxes can be used to produce large self-assembled islands of monomers, dimers, or macrocycle hexamers, which are of interest in their own right. On-surface synthesis of oligomers, from a single precursor, circumvents potential challenges with their protracted wet-chemical synthesis and with multiple deposition sources. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS), we show that changes in the electronic states through this oligomer sequence provide an insightful view of the 2D COF (synthesized in the absence of atomic hydrogen) as the end point in an evolution of electronic structures from the monomer.

Preparations for quantum simulations of quantum chromodynamics in 1+1 dimensions. I. Axial gauge

Here, tools necessary for quantum simulations of 1+1 dimensional quantum chromodynamics are developed. When formulated in axial gauge and with two flavors of quarks, this system requires 12 qubits per spatial site with the gauge fields included via nonlocal interactions. Classical computations and D-wave’s quantum annealer advantage are used to determine the hadronic spectrum, enabling a decomposition of the masses and a study of quark entanglement. Color “edge” states confined within a screening length of the end of the lattice are found. IBM’s seven-qubit quantum computers, ibmq_jakarta and ibm_perth, are used to compute dynamics from the trivial vacuum in one-flavor QCD with one spatial site. More generally, the Hamiltonian and quantum circuits for time evolution of 1+1 dimensional SU(N c ) gauge theory with Nf flavors of quarks are developed, and the resource requirements for large-scale quantum simulations are estimated.

Polyakov model in ’t Hooft flux background: a quantum mechanical reduction with memory

We construct a compactification of Polyakov model on T 2 × $\mathbb{R}$ down to quantum mechanics which remembers non-perturbative aspects of field theory even at an arbitrarily small area. Standard compactification on small T 2 × $\mathbb{R}$ possesses a unique perturbative vacuum (zero magnetic flux state), separated parametrically from higher flux states, and the instanton effects do not survive in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. By turning on a background magnetic GNO flux in co-weight lattice corresponding to a non-zero ’t Hooft flux, we show that N-degenerate vacua appear at small torus, and there are N - 1 types of flux changing instantons between them. We construct QM instantons starting with QFT instantons using the method of replicas. For example, SU(2) gauge theory with flux reduces to the double-well potential where each well is a fractional flux state. Despite the absence of a mixed anomaly, the vacuum structure of QFT and the one of QM are continuously connected. We also compare the quantum mechanical reduction of the Polyakov model with the deformed Yang-Mills, by coupling both theories to TQFTs. In particular, we compare the mass spectrum for dual photons and energy spectrum in the QM limit. We give a detailed description of critical points at infinity in the semi-classical expansion, and their role in resurgence structure.

$S$ parameter from a prototype composite-Higgs model

We have calculated the low-energy constant $L_{10}$ in a prototype composite Higgs model with dynamical fermions in two different representations of the gauge group. The resulting contribution of the new strong sector to the $S$ parameter is consistent with current bounds on the vacuum misalignment parameter. We end with a brief discussion of future directions.

Entanglement maximization and mirror symmetry in two-Higgs-doublet models

We consider 2-to-2 scatterings of Higgs bosons in a CP-conserving two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) and study the implication of maximizing the entanglement in the flavor space, where the two doublets Φ a , a = 1, 2, can be viewed as a qubit: Φ 1 = |0⟩ and Φ 2 = |1⟩. More specifically, we compute the scattering amplitudes for Φ a Φ b → Φ c Φ d and require the outgoing flavor entanglement to be maximal for a full product basis such as the computational basis, which consists of {|00⟩, |01⟩, |10⟩, |11⟩}. In the unbroken phase and turning off the gauge interactions, entanglement maximization results in the appearance of an U(2) × U(2) global symmetry among the quartic couplings, which in general is broken softly by the mass terms. Interestingly, once the Higgs bosons acquire vacuum expectation values, maximal entanglement enforces an exact U(2) × U(2) symmetry, which is spontaneously broken to U(1) × U(1). As a byproduct, this gives rise to Higgs alignment as well as to the existence of 6 massless Nambu-Goldstone bosons. The U(2) × U(2) symmetry can be gauged to lift the massless Goldstones, while maintaining maximal entanglement demands the presence of a discrete Z 2 symmetry interchanging the two gauge sectors. The model is custodially invariant in the scalar sector, and the inclusion of fermions requires a mirror dark sector, related to the standard one by the Z 2 symmetry.

Two-pion contribution to the hadronic vacuum polarization with staggered quarks

We present results from the first lattice QCD calculation of the two-pion contributions to the light-quark connected vector-current correlation function obtained from staggered-quark operators. We employ the MILC Collaboration’s gauge-field ensemble with 2 + 1 + 1 flavors of highly improved staggered sea quarks at a lattice spacing of a ≈ 0.15 fm with a light sea-quark mass at its physical value. The two-pion contributions allow for a refined determination of the noisy long-distance tail of the vector-current correlation function, which we use to compute the light-quark connected contribution to hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) with improved statistical precision. We compare our results with traditional noise-reduction techniques used in lattice QCD calculations of the light-quark connected HVP, namely, the so-called fit and bounding methods. We observe a factor of roughly 3 improvement in the statistical precision in the determination of the HVP contribution to the muon’s anomalous magnetic moment over these approaches. We also lay the group theoretical groundwork for extending this calculation to finer lattice spacings with increased numbers of staggered two-pion taste states.

Gauge invariants of linearized gravity with a general background metric

In linearized gravity with distributed matter, the background metric has no generic symmetries, and decomposition of the metric perturbation into global normal modes is generally impractical. This complicates the identification of the gauge-invariant part of the perturbation, which is a concern, for example, in the theory of dispersive gravitational waves (GWs) whose energy–momentum must be gauge-invariant. Here, we propose how to identify the gauge-invariant part of the metric perturbation and the six independent gauge invariants per se for an arbitrary background metric. For the Minkowski background, the operator that projects the metric perturbation on the invariant subspace is proportional to the well-known dispersion operator of linear GWs in vacuum. For a general background, this operator is expressed in terms of the Green’s operator of the vacuum wave equation. Further, if the background is smooth, it can be found asymptotically using the inverse scale of the background metric as a small parameter.

Anatomy of the electroweak phase transition for dark sector induced baryogenesis

We investigate the electroweak phase transition patterns for a recently proposed baryogenesis model with CP violation originated in the dark sector. The model includes a complex scalar singlet-Higgs boson portal, a U(1) l gauge lepton symmetry with a Z ' gauge boson portal and a fermionic dark matter particle. We find a novel thermal history of the scalar sector, featuring a Z 2 breaking singlet vacuum in the early Universe driven by a dark Yukawa coupling, that induces a one-step strongly first order electroweak phase transition. We explore the parameter space that generates the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry and dark matter relic abundance, while being consistent with constraints from electric dipole moment, collider searches, and dark matter direct detection bounds. The complex singlet can be produced via the Higgs portal and decays into Standard Model particles after traveling a certain distance. We explore the reach for long-lived singlet scalars at the 13 TeV Large Hadron Collider with \( \mathcal{L} \) = 139 fb - 1 and show its impact on the parameter space of the model. Setting aside currently unresolved theoretical uncertainties, we estimate the gravitational wave signatures detectable at future observatories.

Obstructions to gapped phases from noninvertible symmetries

Quantum systems in 3+1 dimensions that are invariant under gauging a one-form symmetry enjoy novel noninvertible duality symmetries encoded by topological defects. These symmetries are renormalization group invariants which constrain dynamics. We show that such noninvertible symmetries often forbid a symmetry-preserving vacuum state with a gapped spectrum. In particular, we prove that a self-dual theory with $\mathbb{Z}^{(1)}_N$ one-form symmetry is gapless or spontaneously breaks the self-duality symmetry unless N = k 2 ⁢ℓ where –1 is a quadratic residue modulo . We also extend these results to noninvertible symmetries arising from invariance under more general gauging operations including, e.g., triality symmetries. Along the way, we discover how duality defects in symmetry-protected topological phases have a hidden time-reversal symmetry that organizes their basic properties. These noninvertible symmetries are realized in lattice gauge theories, which serve to illustrate our results.
