In Situ Synthesis of Molybdenum Carbide Nanoparticles Incorporated into Laser‐Patterned Nitrogen‐Doped Carbon for Room Temperature VOC Sensing

Abstract Carbon laser‐patterning (CLaP) is emerging as a new tool for the precise and selective synthesis of functional carbon‐based materials for on‐chip applications. The aim of this work is to demonstrate the applicability of laser‐patterned nitrogen‐doped carbon (LP‐NC) for resistive gas‐sensing applications. Films of pre‐carbonized organic nanoparticles on polyethylenetherephthalate are carbonized with a CO 2 ‐laser. Upon laser‐irradiation a compositional and morphological gradient in the films is generated with a carbon content of 92% near the top surface. The specific surface areas of the LP‐NC are increased by introducing sodium iodide (NaI) as a porogen. Electronic conductivity and surface area measurements corroborate the deeper penetration of the laser‐energy into the film in the presence of NaI. Furthermore, impregnation of LP‐NC with MoC 1− x (<10 nm) nanoparticles is achieved by addition of ammonium heptamolybdate into the precursor film. The resulting doping‐sensitive nano‐grain boundaries between p‐type carbon and metallic MoC 1− x lead to an improvement of the volatile organic compounds sensing response of Δ R / R 0 = −3.7% or −0.8% for 1250 ppm acetone or 900 ppm toluene at room temperature, respectively, which is competitive with carbon‐based sensor materials. Further advances in sensitivity and in situ functionalization are expected to make CLaP a useful method for printing selective sensor arrays.

Predicting Trends in VOC Through Rapid, Multimodal Characterization of State-of-the-Art p-i-n Perovskite Devices

Perovskite photovoltaic technologies are approaching commercial deployment, yet single junction and tandem architectures both still have significant room to improve power conversion efficiency and stability. The ability to perform rapid screening of material quality after altering processing conditions is critical to accelerating the optimization and commercialization of perovskite-based technologies. Currently, researchers utilize a wide range of stand-alone metrology tools to isolate sources of power loss throughout a device stack, which can be slow and labor intensive. Here, we demonstrate the use of a multimodal metrology approach to rapidly determine the maximum achievable and predicted open circuit voltages of >100 perovskite devices during fabrication. Acquisition of these different data is facilitated by combining them into a single integrated measurement platform. We show that these data and automated analysis can be used to rapidly understand and ultimately predict quantitative trends in open circuit voltages of state-of-the-art device architectures. The data and automated analysis workflow presented provides a reliable approach to quickly identify absorber and charge transport layer combinations that can lead to improved open circuit voltages.

Improved VOC in RbF-Treated Cu(In,Ga)Se2 Solar Cells via Passivation of Recombination Centers

Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 (CIGS) solar cells have benefited in recent years from the addition of heavy alkali elements, such as Rb, which increase the solar cell open-circuit voltage ( V OC ). To investigate the source of this improvement, here, we compare samples with and without Rb to perform a quantitative comparison of electronic defects and minority carrier lifetime. Deep-level transient and optical spectroscopy measurements were performed on two sets of rubidium fluoride (RbF)-treated and untreated CIGS, and three distinct traps were identified regardless of RbF treatment. The RbF treatment was found to reduce the concentration of the H2 trap, which was previously found to act as a recombination center and is located preferentially at CIGS grain boundaries. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements showed an increase in effective lifetime after RbF and nearly all lifetime improvement resulted from reductions in bulk recombination. The observed V OC improvement is well correlated with increased minority carrier lifetime and acceptor concentration, which led to increases and decreases in electron and hole quasi-Fermi levels, respectively.

Source apportionment of VOCs, IVOCs and SVOCs by positive matrix factorization in suburban Livermore, California

Abstract. Gas- and particle-phase molecular markers provide highly specific information about the sources and atmospheric processes that contribute to air pollution. In urban areas, major sources of pollution are changing as regulation selectively mitigates some pollution sources and climate change impacts the surrounding environment. In this study, a comprehensive thermal desorption aerosol gas chromatograph (cTAG) was used to measure volatile, intermediate-volatility and semivolatile molecular markers every other hour over a 10 d period from 11 to 21 April 2018 in suburban Livermore, California. Source apportionment via positive matrix factorization (PMF) was performed to identify major sources of pollution. The PMF analysis identified 13 components, including emissions from gasoline, consumer products, biomass burning, secondary oxidation, aged regional transport and several factors associated with single compounds or specific events with unique compositions. The gasoline factor had a distinct morning peak in concentration but lacked a corresponding evening peak, suggesting commute-related traffic emissions are dominated by cold starts in residential areas. More monoterpene and monoterpenoid mass was assigned to consumer product emissions than biogenic sources, underscoring the increasing importance of volatile chemical products to urban emissions. Daytime isoprene concentrations were controlled by biogenic sunlight- and temperature-dependent processes, mediated by strong midday mixing, but gasoline was found to be the dominant and likely only source of isoprene at night. Biomass burning markers indicated residential wood burning activity remained an important pollution source even in the springtime. This study demonstrates that specific high-time-resolution molecular marker measurements across a wide range of volatility enable more comprehensive pollution source profiles than a narrower volatility range would allow.

Fungal colonization of fiberglass insulation in the air distribution system of a multi-story office building: VOC production and possible relationship to a sick building syndrome

Complaints characteristic of those for sick building syndrome prompted mycological investigations of a modern multi-story office building on the Gulf coast in the Southeastern United States (Houston-Galveston area). The air handling units and fiberglass duct liner of the heating, ventilating and air conditioning system of the building, without a history of catastrophic or chronic water damage, demonstrated extensive colonization with Penicillium spp and Cladosporium herbarum. Although dense fungal growth was observed on surfaces within the heating-cooling system, most air samples yielded fewer than 200 CFU m-3. Several volatile compounds found in the building air were released also from colonized fiberglass. Removal of colonized insulation from the floor receiving the majority of complaints of mouldy air and continuous operation of the units supplying this floor resulted in a reduction in the number of complaints.
