Custodial symmetry breaking and Higgs boson signatures at the LHC

We discuss the simplest model that predicts a tree-level modification of the ρ parameter from a shift in the W -mass without changing the prediction for the Z mass. This model predicts a new neutral Higgs and two charged Higgses, with very similar masses and suppressed couplings to the Standard Model fermions. We discuss the decay properties of these new scalar bosons, and the main signatures at the Large Hadron Collider. Comparing these signatures for the first time to the latest measurements, we show that while masses around 200 GeV are excluded for some scenarios, over a wide range of model parameter space the new bosons can have a mass close to the electroweak scale without violating existing limits from experimental searches or destroying the agreement with measurements. We investigate the scenario where the new neutral Higgs is fermiophobic and has a large branching ratio into W gauge bosons and/or photons, and show that this could lead to a signal in the diphoton mass spectrum at low Higgs masses. We discuss the different signatures that can motivate new measurements and searches at the Large Hadron Collider. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

First results on nucleon resonance electroexcitation amplitudes from ep → e'π + π – p' cross sections at W = 1.4–1.7 GeV and Q 2 = 2.0–5.0 GeV 2

The electroexcitation amplitudes or $\gamma_vpN^*$ electrocouplings of the $N(1440)1/2^+$, $N(1520)3/2^-$, and $\Delta(1600)3/2^+$ resonances were obtained for the first time from the $ep \to e'\pi^+\pi^-p'$ differential cross sections measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab within the range of invariant mass $W$ of the final state hadrons from 1.4–1.7~GeV for photon virtualities $Q^2$ from 2.0--5.0~GeV$^2$. A good description of the nine independent one-fold differential $\gamma_v p\to \pi^+\pi^-p'$ cross sections achieved within the data-driven Jefferson Lab-Moscow State University (JM) meson-baryon reaction model in each bin of ($W$,$Q^2$) allows for separation of the resonant and non-resonant contributions. The electrocouplings were determined in the fits of the $\pi^+\pi^-p$ cross sections within three overlapping $W$ intervals with a substantial contribution from each of the three resonances listed above. Consistent results on the electrocouplings extracted from the data in these $W$ intervals provide evidence for their reliable extraction. These studies extend information on the electrocouplings of the $N(1440)1/2^+$ and $N(1520)3/2^-$ available from this channel over a broader range of $Q^2$. The electrocouplings of the $\Delta(1600)3/2^+$, which decays preferentially into $\pi\pi N$ final states, have been determined for the first time. Here, the reliable extraction of the electrocouplings for these states is also supported by the description of the $\pi^+\pi^-p$ differential cross sections with $Q^2$-independent masses and total/partial hadronic decay widths into the $\pi\Delta$ and $\rho p$ final states.

Anomalies in global SMEFT analyses. A case study of first-row CKM unitarity

Recent developments in the Standard Model analysis of semileptonic charged-current processes involving light quarks have revealed ~ 3σ tensions in Cabibbo universality tests involving meson, neutron, and nuclear beta decays. In this paper, we explore beyond the Standard Model explanations of this so-called Cabibbo Angle Anomaly in the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), including not only low-energy charged current processes (‘L’), but also electroweak precision observables (‘EW’) and Drell-Yan collider processes (‘C’) that probe the same underlying physics across a broad range of energy scales. The resulting ‘CLEW’ framework not only allows one to test explanations of the Cabibbo Angle Anomaly, but is set up to provide near model-independent analyses with minimal assumptions on the flavor structure of the SMEFT operators. Besides the global analysis, we consider a large number of simpler scenarios, each with a subset of SMEFT operators, and investigate how much they improve upon the Standard Model fit. We find that the most favored scenarios, as judged by the Akaike Information Criterion, are those that involve right-handed charged currents. Additional interactions, namely oblique operators, terms modifying the Fermi constant, and operators involving right-handed neutral currents, play a role if the CDF determination of the W mass is included in the analysis.

QCD analysis of Δ S = 0 hadronic parity violation

We present a QCD analysis of the effective weak Hamiltonian at hadronic energy scales for strangeness-nonchanging (ΔS = 0) hadronic processes. Performing a leading-order renormalization group analysis in QCD from the W to the O(2 GeV) energy scale, we derive the pertinent effective Hamiltonian for hadronic parity violation, including the effects of both neutral and charged weak currents. We compute the complete renormalization group evolution of all isosectors and the evolution through heavy-flavor thresholds for the first time. We show that the additional four-quark operators that enter below the W mass scale from QCD operator mixing effects form a closed set, and they result in a 12 x 12 anomalous dimension matrix. Computing the resulting effective Hamiltonian and comparing to earlier results, we affirm the importance of operator mixing effects and find, as an example, that the parity-violating pion-nucleon coupling constant, using the factorization Ansatz and an assessment of the pertinent quark charge of the nucleon in lattice QCD at the 2 GeV scale, is in better agreement with recent experiments.

Neutrino(antineutrino)–nucleus interactions in the shallow- and deep-inelastic scattering regions

In $\nu /\bar{\nu }$–nucleon/nucleus interactions shallow inelastic scattering ($\text{SIS}$) is technically defined in terms of the four-momentum transfer to the hadronic system as non-resonant meson production with $Q^2 \lessapprox 1 \text {GeV}^2$. This non-resonant meson production intermixes with resonant meson production in a regime of similar effective hadronic mass W of the interaction. As $Q^2$ grows and surpasses this $ ≈1 \text{GeV}^2$ limit, non-resonant interactions begin to take place with quarks within the nucleon indicating the start of deep inelastic scattering ($\text{DIS}$). To essentially separate this resonant plus non-resonant meson production from $\text{DIS}$ quark-fragmented meson production, a cut of 2 $\text{GeV}$ in W of the interactions is generally introduced. However, since experimentally mesons from resonance decay cannot be separated from non-resonant produced mesons, $\text{SIS}$ for all practical purposes in this review has been defined as inclusive meson production that includes non-resonant plus resonant meson production and the interference between them. Experimentally then for $W \lessapprox 2 \text{GeV}$ inclusive meson production with $W \gtrapprox (M_N + M_π)$ and all $Q^2$ is here defined as $\text{SIS}$, while for $W \gtrapprox 2 \text {GeV}$, the kinematic region with $Q^2 \gtrapprox 1 \text{GeV}^2$ is defined as DIS$\text{DIS}$degrees of attention from the community. While the theoretical/phenomenological study of $\nu$–nucleon and $\nu$–nucleus $\text{DIS}$ scattering is advanced, such studies of a large portion of the $\text{SIS}$ region, particularly the $\text{SIS}$ to $\text{DIS}$ transition region, have hardly begun. Experimentally, the $\text{SIS}$ and the $\text{DIS}$ regions for $\nu$–nucleon scattering have minimal results and only in the experimental study of the $\nu$–nucleus $\text{DIS}$ region are there significant results for some nuclei. Inasmuch as current and future neutrino oscillation experiments have contributions from both higher $W \text{SIS}$ and $\text{DIS}$ kinematic regions and these regions are in need of both considerable theoretical and experimental study, this review will concentrate on these $\text{SIS}$ to $\text{DIS}$ transition and $\text{DIS}$ kinematic regions surveying our knowledge and the current challenges.

Exclusive π - electroproduction off the neutron in deuterium in the resonance region

We report new results for the exclusive and quasi-free cross sections off neutrons bound in deuterium y v n(p) →p π - (p) are presented over a wide final state hadron angle range with a kinematic coverage of the invariant mass (W) up to 1.825 GeV and the virtual photon four-momentum transfer squared (Q 2 ) from 0.4 to 1.0 GeV 2 . The exclusive structure functions have been extracted and their Legendre moments were obtained. Final-state-interaction contributions have been kinematically separated from the extracted quasi-free cross sections off bound neutrons solely based on the analysis of the experimental data. These new results will serve as long-awaited input for phenomenological analyses to extract the Q 2 evolution of previously unavailable n → N* electroexcitation amplitudes and to improve state-of-the-art models of neutrino scattering off nuclei by augmenting the already available results from free protons.

Dynamical model of J/ψ photoproduction on the nucleon

Here, a dynamical model based on a phenomenological charm quark-nucleon (c – N) potential v cN and the Pomeronexchange mechanism is constructed to investigate the J/ψ photoproduction on the nucleon from threshold to invariant mass W = 300 GeV. The J/ψ – N potential, V J/ψN (r), is constructed by folding v cN into the wave function φ J/ψ ($c\bar{c}$) of J/ψ within a constituent quark model (CQM) of Segovia et al. [Int. J. Mod. Phys. E 22, 1330026 (2013)]. A photoproduction amplitude is also generated by v cN by a $c\bar{c}$–loop integration over the γ → $c\bar{c}$ vertex function and φ J/ψ ($c\bar{c}$). No commonly used vector meson dominance assumption is used to define this photoproduction amplitude which is needed to describe the data near the threshold. The c – N potential v cN (r) is parameterized in a form such that the predicted V J/ψN (r) at large distances has the same Yukawa potential form extracted from a lattice QCD (LQCD) calculation of Kawanai and Sasaki, [Phys. Rev. D 82, 091501(R) (2010)]. The parameters of vcN are determined by fitting the total cross-section data of Jefferson Laboratory (JLab) by performing calculations that include J/ψ – N final-state interactions (FSI). The resulting differential cross sections dσ /dt are found in good agreements with the data. It is shown that the FSI effects dominate the cross section in the very near-threshold region, allowing for sensitive testing of the predicted J/ψ – N scattering amplitudes. By imposing the constraints of J/ψ – N potential extracted from the LQCD calculation of Kawanai and Sasaki, [Phys. Rev. D 82, 091501(R) (2010)], we have obtained three J/ψ – N potentials which fit the JLab data equally well. The resulting J/ψ – N scattering lengths are in the range of a = [-0.05, -0.25] fm. With the determined v cN (r) and the wave functions generated from the same CQM, the constructed model is used to predict the cross sections of photoproduction of η c (1S) and ψ(2S) mesons for future experimental tests.

Double-pion electroproduction off protons in deuterium: Quasifree cross sections and final-state interactions

Here, the single-differential and fully integrated cross sections for quasi-free $π^+π^-$ electroproduction off protons bound in deuterium have been extracted for the first time. The experimental data were collected at Jefferson Laboratory with the CLAS detector. The measurements were performed in the kinematic region of the invariant mass W from 1.3 GeV to 1.825 GeV and photon virtuality Q 2 from 0.4 GeV2 to 1.0 GeV 2 . Sufficient experimental statistics allow for narrow binning in all kinematic variables, while maintaining a small statistical uncertainty. The extracted cross sections were compared with the corresponding cross sections off free protons, which allowed us to obtain an estimate of the contribution from events in which interactions between the final-state hadrons and the spectator neutron took place.

Shallow-and-Deep Inelastic Scattering with Neutrinos

In ν/ν-Nucleon/Nucleus interactions Shallow Inelastic Scattering (SIS) is technically defined interms of the four-momentum transfer to the hadronic system as non-resonant meson productionwith predominantly lower Q 2 . This non-resonant meson production intermixes with resonantmeson production in a regime of similar effective hadronic mass W of the interaction. As Q 2 grows non-resonant interactions begin to take place with quarks within the nucleon indicating thestart of Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS). To essentially separate this resonant plus non-resonantmeson production from DIS quark-fragmented meson production, a cut of 2 GeV in W of theinteractions is generally introduced. However, since experimentally mesons from resonance decaycannot be separated from non-resonant produced mesons, SIS for all practical purposes is definedas inclusive meson production that includes non-resonant plus resonant meson production andthe interference between them. NOTE, this is a mildly modified introduction and overview takenfrom the detailed summary of this topic referenced in the introduction.

THE STRUCTURE FUNCTION OF THE FREE NEUTRON AT HIGH X-BJORKEN

Understanding the internal structure of nucleons is one of the primary goal of nuclear physicists. As protons and neutrons are only the bound state solution of the QCD lagrangian (at least inside atomic nuclei), studying protons and neutrons helps uncover nuclear struc ture. Due to its easy availability, many studies on protons have been done on a wide range of kinematics. However, free neutron targets are not readily achievable. So, any information on neutrons has to be extracted from neutron-rich nuclei, and some nuclear models have to be used to subtract the contributions from other nucleons to extract the information on neutrons. So, the Barely Off-shell Nucleon Structure (BONuS12) experiment at Jefferson Lab was conducted to overcome these challenges by using spectator tagging. The experiment effectively created a quasi-free neutron target by scattering electrons off a deuterium target and detecting low-momentum, backward-moving protons using a custom-built Radial Time Projection Chamber (RTPC). Selecting the low momentum and backward-moving spectators would enable us to minimize the model-dependent effects due to final state interactions and target fragmentation. The RTPC was a 40 cm-long cylindrical detector that works on the principle of gaseous ionization. It had three layers of Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs) for charge amplification and a surrounding readout pad. The scattered electrons were measured using the CLAS12 detector, and data were collected using a 10.4 GeV electron beam dur ing Spring and Summer 2020. Using spectator tagging, we extracted the structure function ratio Fn 2 of the quasi-free neutron in the deep inelastic scattering at high x, upto x ~ 0.8. The result was extracted in the region with the invariant mass W > 1.8 GeV/c2, and Q2 in the range 1.3 to 11 GeV2. This dissertation presents the methodology, event selection criteria and refinements, estimation and subtraction of backgrounds, and complete analysis of extraction of Fn 2/Fp 2 in a model-independent way. Also, systematic uncertainties in our final analysis will be discussed in detail.

p +p - electroproduction off protons in deuterium: measurements of quasi-free cross sections and kinematic probing of final state interactions

In this study, the process of pi+pi- electroproduction off protons bound in deuterium nuclei is explored. The exploration is performed through the analysis of experimental data on electron scattering off the deuteron target, collected in Hall B at Jefferson Lab with the CLAS detector. As a main result, the set of integrated and single-differential cross sections of the reaction yvp(n) -> p'(n')pi+pi- is obtained. The cross sections are extracted in the quasi-free regime, which implies that only events not affected by final state interactions are subject to selection. The measurements are performed in the kinematic region of the invariant mass W from 1.3 GeV to 1.825 GeV and photon virtuality Q2 from 0.4 GeV2 to 1 GeV2. Sufficient experimental statistics allows narrow binning, i.e. 25 MeV in W and 0.05 GeV2 in Q2, while maintaining an adequate statistical uncertainty. The extraction of quasi-free cross sections is accompanied by the kinematic probing of FSI between the reaction final hadrons and the spectator neutron in the aforementioned exclusive channel. In this probing the distributions of missing quantities are used in order to investigate the relative spread of events with FSI along the reaction phase space, trace the difference of FSI manifestations in different reaction topologies, reveal details on alterations of the hadron momentum in FSI, and isolate FSI contributions of various final hadrons. The performed examination is also capable of retrieving information on some underlying FSI mechanisms, among which the process of resonance formation in the intermediate state of pion-neutron interactions is particularly remarkable.

Nuclear Dependence of Charged Current Inclusive $\bar{\nu}_\mu -$A Cross Section Measurements at 6 GeV at MINERvA

The main advantage of the MINERvA detector is that it uses differently sized nuclear targets, in the same neutrino beam, allowing for a direct study of nuclear medium effects, with reduced flux and detector uncertainties. This thesis presents the first high statistics charged current antineutrino-nucleus inclusive two-dimensional cross section measurements using an antineutrino beam with $\langle E_{\bar\nu}\rangle\sim$ 6 GeV, on iron, lead, carbon and hydrocarbon targets, as a function of bjorken $x$ and four-momentum transfer squared $Q^2$, invariant mass $W$ and $Q^2$ and muon longitudinal and transverse momenta, $p_t$ and $p_z$. These nuclei of different sizes were utilized to measure the nuclear dependence of the cross section. The antineutrino interactions that were utilized for the analysis presented in this thesis, were having an antimuon in the final state with energy 2-20GeV and with an antimuon scattering angle less than $17^o$. This analysis represents one of the largest antineutrino datasets analyzed to date in the energy region of $\langle E_{\bar\nu} \rangle \sim$ 6 GeV. This direct evidence for the nuclear medium effects, can help benchmarking models, which can be used by future neutrino experiments like DUNE, by extrapolating these results to Argon target.

First CLAS12 Double-Pion (Npp) Electroproduction Analysis

The N* program aims to explore strong interaction dynamics of the three-valence quark distance-dependent structure. The electroproduction and photoproduction studies provide insight into the nucleon resonance structure. One of the primary objectives of N* is to extract the electroexcitation amplitudes, which are crucial in determining the inner structure of various nucleon excitation states and their underlying degrees of freedom. Studying them on the nucleon length scale reveals also parts of the complex nature of the universe and its origin at their most fundamental level. The extraction of these amplitudes is mostly based on the single-pion, and particularly at higher invariant masses W, on the double-pion electroproduction channels, because nucleon resonance dominantly couple to them. CLAS has produced mostly all of the world data on charged double-pion electroproduction in the nucleon resonance region for photon virtualities Q2 up to 5 GeV2. The kinematic range can be extended with CLAS12, which can explore these amplitudes in the still almost unexplored range of Q2 > 5.0 GeV2. This will offer opportunities to understand the resonance structure at distances where the three-bound quark degree of freedom dominates and pave the way towards perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD). This dissertation presents new double-pion electroproduction cross sections in the W range [1.4, 2.10] GeV and the Q2 range [2.0, 8.0] GeV2, using the Run Group A Fall-2018 dataset. This data was taken with the CLAS12 detector in Hall B at Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory (JLab) at an electron beam energy of 10.6 GeV. These cross sections are the basis for the extraction of resonance electroexcitation amplitudes using the phenomenological JLab- Moscow State University (JM) model.

Search for heavy neutral leptons in final states with electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying tau leptons in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) of Majorana or Dirac type using proton-proton collision data at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV is presented. The data were collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. Events with three charged leptons (electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying tau leptons) are selected, corresponding to HNL production in association with a charged lepton and decay of the HNL to two charged leptons and a standard model (SM) neutrino. The search is performed for HNL masses between 10 GeV and 1.5 TeV. No evidence for an HNL signal is observed in data. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are found for the squared coupling strength of the HNL to SM neutrinos, considering exclusive coupling of the HNL to a single SM neutrino generation, for both Majorana and Dirac HNLs. The limits exceed previously achieved experimental constraints for a wide range of HNL masses, and the limits on tau neutrino coupling scenarios with HNL masses above the W boson mass are presented for the first time.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Limits on W R from Meson Decays

In this Letter we show that pseudoscalar meson leptonic decay data can be used to set stringent limits on the mass $m$ W$_{R}$ of a right-handed vector boson, such as the one that appears in left-right symmetric models. We have shown that for a heavy neutrino with a mass $m_N$ in the range 50 < $m_N$/MeV < 1900 one can constraint $m$ W$_{R}$ ≳ (4–19) TeV at 90% CL. This provides the most stringent experimental limits on the $W_R$ mass to date for this heavy neutrino mass range.

Nuclear suppression of coherent J / ψ photoproduction in heavy-ion ultraperipheral collisions and leading twist nuclear shadowing

We determine the nuclear suppression factor S Pb ( x ) , where x = M J / ψ 2 / W γ p 2 with M J / ψ the J / ψ mass and W γ p the photon-nucleon energy, for the cross section of coherent J / ψ photoproduction in heavy-ion ultraperipheral collisions at the Large Hadron Collider and Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider by performing the χ 2 fit to all available data on the cross section d σ A A → J / ψ A A / d y as a function of the J / ψ rapidity y and the photoproduction cross section σ γ A → J / ψ A ( W γ p ) as a function of W γ p . We find that while the d σ A A → J / ψ A A / d y data alone constrain S Pb ( x ) for x ≥ 10 − 3 , the combined d σ A A → J / ψ A A / d y and σ γ A → J / ψ A ( W γ p ) data allow us to determine S Pb ( x ) in the wide interval 10 − 5 < x < 0.05 . In particular, the data favor S Pb ( x ) , which decreases with a decrease of x in the 10 − 4 < x < 0.01 interval and can be both decreasing or constant for x < 10 − 4 . Identifying S Pb ( x ) with the ratio of the gluon distributions in Pb and the proton R g ( x , Q 0 2 ) = g A ( x , Q 0 2 ) / [ A g p ( x , Q 0 2 ) ] , we demonstrate that the leading twist approximation for nuclear shadowing provides a good description of all the data on d σ A A → J / ψ A A / d y and σ γ A → J / ψ A ( W γ p ) as well as on the experimental values for S Pb ( x ) derived from σ γ A → J / ψ A ( W γ p ) . We also show that modern nuclear parton distributions reasonably reproduce S Pb ( x ) as well. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
