In situ Al 2 O 3 incorporation enhances the efficiency of CuIn(S,Se) 2 solar cells prepared from molecular-ink solutions

Here, we report an efficiency enhancement of solution-processed CuIn(S,Se) 2 (CISSe) thin film solar cells via in situ incorporation of Al 2 O 3 . These films were produced using inks containing CuCl, InCl 3 , AlNO 3 (Al/Al + In: 0.1) and thiourea dissolved in methanol. After spin coating of these solutions in air, samples were subjected to a selenization process. Auger electron spectroscopy depth-profiling analysis showed that Al is evenly distributed throughout the bulk of the film. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that AlNO 3 precursor reacted with oxygen to form nanosized amorphous Al 2 O 3 grains located within the bulk and grain boundaries of CISSe, as well as at both the top and bottom interfaces. Power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 11.6% (JS C : 35.8 mA cm –2 , V OC : 518 mV, FF: 62.2%, no anti-reflection coating) was achieved with Al–CISSe solar cell devices integrated with CdS (chemical bath deposition, thickness: 80 nm) and ZnO/ITO bilayers (sputtered, thickness: 300 nm). The average PCE (10.1%, $\langle$J SC $\rangle$: 34.5 mA cm –2 , $\langle$V OC $\rangle$: 491 mV, $\langle$FF$\rangle$: 59.8%) was nearly 4% (absolute) higher than that measured on CISSe baseline cells fabricated from solutions without Al ($\langle$PCE$\rangle$ = 6.4%, $\langle$J SC $\rangle$: 32.8 mA cm –2 , $\langle$V OC $\rangle$: 410 mV, $\langle$FF$\rangle$: 47.3%). This in situ Al 2 O 3 incorporation is speculated to play a role in the enhancement of the VOC and FF of the devices through passivation of defects in CISSe reducing interface and bulk recombination, as evidenced by a reduced defect density and an increased activation energy of the dominant recombination mechanism from capacitance and temperature-dependent VOC measurements, respectively.

Structural mapping and tuning of mixed halide ions in amorphous sulfides for fast Li-ion conduction and high deformability

Amorphous sulfides are among the most promising candidates for solid electrolytes (SEs) owing to their excellent deformability and acceptable Li-ion conductivity (σion) at room temperature. However, the complex atomic structure of these amorphous materials without long-range ordering results in a lack of structural understanding and difficulties in tuning material properties. Here, in this study, we performed structural mapping of glassy sulfide SEs composed of various anion clusters using a combinatorial atomic level analysis of synchrotron X-ray-based pair distribution function (PDF) and reverse Monte-Carlo (RMC) methods, demonstrating the potential to tune σ ion in glass SEs. First, we prepared a new glassy sulfide with a mixed anion framework of two halogens (Br and I) as atomic anions, with PS 4 3- molecular anions in a Li 2 S–P 2 S 5 -based glass SE. At a specific Br content, [(Li 2 S) 0.658 (LiI 0.9 LiBr 0.1 ) 0.342 ] 0.825 [P 2 S 5 ] 0.175 recorded a σ ion of 2.27 mS cm -1 , the highest value for any glass sulfides reported to date; however, its elastic modulus was still suppressed to 14.48 GPa. PDF and RMC calculations successfully provided structural mapping of anion clusters, including two halogens. Molecular dynamics simulations of each composition confirmed that flexible coordination caused by the rattling of small polarizable Br ions in the mixed halogens of glassy SEs contributed to the superior σ ion . Our results may provide new insights into the design of superior glassy SEs that play key roles in all-solid-state batteries requiring fast Li-ion conduction and high deformability.

Measurement of the ionization response of amorphous selenium with 122 keV γ rays

In this work, we performed a measurement of the ionization response of 200 μm-thick amorphous selenium (aSe) layers under drift electric fields of up to 50 V/μm. The aSe target was exposed to ionizing radiation from a 57 Co radioactive source and the ionization pulses were recorded with high resolution. Using the spectral line from the photoabsorption of 122 keV γ rays, we measured the charge yield in aSe and the line width as a function of drift electric field. From a detailed microphysics simulation of charge generation and recombination in aSe, we conclude that the strong dependence of recombination on the ionization track density provides the dominant contribution to the energy resolution in aSe. These results provide valuable input to estimate the sensitivity of a proposed next-generation search for the neutrinoless ββ decay of 82 Se that aims to employ imaging sensors with an active layer of aSe. We estimate the RMS line width of the integrated ionization signal from neutrinoless ββ decay events (of deposited energy 3 MeV) to be 2.0% for a drift field of 50 V/μm. The energy resolution can be improved to 1% by correcting for the charge yield as a function of ionization density along the imaged electron tracks.

Grain boundary zirconia-modified garnet solid-state electrolyte

Here, we report a method for promoting electrochemical stability in garnet Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 solid-state electrolyte based on a composite two-phase oxide–oxide microstructure. Grain boundary precipitation of the controlled distribution of amorphous zirconium oxide microparticles is achieved through the addition of reactive tantalum carbide. During ambient-atmosphere sintering, the carbide decomposes through an in situ reaction, the ‘extra’ Ta substituting for Zr within the Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 lattice. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations identify a thermodynamically favourable reaction path and show how substituting Ta 5+ at Zr 4+ sites affects the crystal structure as well as bulk ionic and electronic conductivities. Quantitative stereology highlights that zirconia also acts as a sintering aid, reducing compact porosity. Cryogenic focused-ion-beam scanning electron microscopy and fractography analysis of cycled solid-state electrolytes illustrates that near-universally observed intergranular Li-metal dendrite propagation is suppressed by the two-phase microstructure, favouring transgranular dendrites instead. Importantly, DFT demonstrates that compared with the Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 surface, the zirconium oxide surface per se is less electronically conductive and does not trap excess electrons to reduce Li ions. This is a key reason for the substantial improvement in the electrochemical properties over the single-phase baseline.
