Water survey of Canada: Application for use of ERTS-A for retransmission of water resources data

The author has identified the following significant results. Water resources data including water level, water velocity, precipitation, air temperature, ice condition, DCP battery voltage, and water stage recorder clock operation have been transmitted from remote areas in Canada using the ERTS Data Collection System. The Data Collection Platforms have met all requirements. The suitability of satellite retransmission as a means of obtaining data from remote areas has been demonstrated. The present network of 9 Data Collection Platforms will be expanded to 28 to develop a quasi-operational network.

Hearing aid malfunction detection system

A malfunction detection system for detecting malfunctions in electrical signal processing circuits is disclosed. Malfunctions of a hearing aid in the form of frequency distortion and/or inadequate amplification by the hearing aid amplifier, as well as weakening of the hearing aid power supply are detectable. A test signal is generated and a timed switching circuit periodically applies the test signal to the input of the hearing aid amplifier in place of the input signal from the microphone. The resulting amplifier output is compared with the input test signal used as a reference signal. The hearing aid battery voltage is also periodically compared to a reference voltage. Deviations from the references beyond preset limits cause a warning system to operate.

RCA SATCOM in-orbit experience: An update

The SATCOM in-orbit battery performance was evaluated. The capacitance and constant current charge rates for each of the three batteries were monitored. A typical eclipse discharge profile was generated and attendant reconditioning recharge conditions were considered. Battery temperatures, pressures, and average battery voltages are presented in tabular form. In-orbit data from monitoring the end of discharge voltage during eclipses, a key performance parameter, are also given.

Modeling a constant power load for nickel-hydrogen battery testing using SPICE

The effort to design and model a constant power load for the HST (Hubble Space Telescope) nickel-hydrogen battery tests is described. The constant power load was designed for three different simulations on the batteries: life cycling, reconditioning, and capacity testing. A dc-dc boost converter was designed to act as this constant power load. A boost converter design was chosen because of the low test battery voltage (4 to 6 VDC) generated and the relatively high power requirement of 60 to 70 W. The SPICE model was shown to consistently predict variations in the actual circuit as various designs were attempted. It is concluded that the confidence established in the SPICE model of the constant power load ensures its extensive utilization in future efforts to improve performance in the actual load circuit.

Nickel hydrogen common pressure vessel battery development

Our present design for a common pressure vessel (CPV) battery, a nickel hydrogen battery system to combine all of the cells into a common pressure vessel, uses an open disk which allows the cell to be set into a shallow cavity; subsequent cells are stacked on each other with the total number based on the battery voltage required. This approach not only eliminates the assembly error threat, but also more readily assures equal contact pressure to the heat fin between each cell, which further assures balanced heat transfer. These heat fin dishes with their appropriate cell stacks are held together with tie bars which in turn are connected to the pressure vessel weld rings at each end of the tube.

A battery power model for the EUVE spacecraft

This paper describes a battery power model that has been developed to simulate and predict the behavior of the 50 ampere-hour nickel-cadmium battery that supports the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) spacecraft in its low Earth orbit. First, for given orbit, attitude, solar array panel and spacecraft load data, the model calculates minute-by-minute values for the net power available for charging the battery for a user-specified time period (usually about two weeks). Next, the model is used to calculate minute-by-minute values for the battery voltage, current and state-of-charge for the time period. The model's calculations are explained for its three phases: sunrise charging phase, constant voltage phase, and discharge phase. A comparison of predicted model values for voltage, current and state-of-charge with telemetry data for a complete charge-discharge cycle shows good correlation. This C-based computer model will be used by the EUVE Flight Operations Team for various 'what-if' scheduling analyses.

Nanosatellite Power System Considerations

The capability to build complex electronic functions into compact packages is opening the path to miniature satellites on the order of 1 kg mass, 10 cm across, packed with the computing processors, motion controllers, measurement sensors, and communications hardware necessary for operation. Power generation will be from short strings of silicon or gallium arsenide-based solar photovoltaic cells with the array power maximized by a peak power tracker (PPT). Energy storage will utilize a low voltage battery with nickel cadmium or lithium ion cells as the most likely selections for rechargeables and lithium (MnO2-Li) primary batteries for one shot short missions.

Apparatus for detecting at least one predetermined condition and providing an informational signal in response thereto in a medication infusion system

A medication infusion system provides redundant safety and includes condition detecting and informational alarm signal generating apparatus for indicating if (1) a fluid leak occurs in different portions of the system; (2) a programmable input from a patient or physician would result in exceeding a safe dosage limit; (3) the reservoir containing medication has been filled; (4) the intended medication pumping does not correlate with the pumping actually effected; (5) battery voltage is low; (6) the medication reserve is low; and (7) the system has been switched off. The apparatus may provide subcutaneous electrical, thermal, or audible stimulation to the patient and also provides a signal which a physician may monitor. The stimulation may be coded to separately identify each above-listed deviation in nominal system performance. In addition, the number of medication requests are correlated with actual medication dispensing to assure proper operation. An identification scheme is provided which matches the patient with his or her corresponding medication.

BIRD Data Report from Exploration Flight Test 1

This report summarizes the data acquired by the Battery-operated Independent Radiation Detector (BIRD) during Exploration Flight Test 1 (EFT-1). The BIRD, consisting of two redundant subsystems isolated electronically from the Orion MPCV, was developed to fly on the Orion EFT-1 to acquire radiation data throughout the mission. The BIRD subsystems successfully triggered using on-board accelerometers in response to launch accelerations, acquired and archived data through landing, and completed the shut down routine when battery voltage decreased to a specified value. The data acquired are important for understanding the radiation environment within the Orion MPCV during transit through the trapped radiation belts.

High-Resistivity Measurement System for Spacecraft Dielectrics

- Volume resistivity is a key material property needed for assessing the risk of electrostatic discharge (ESD) due to spacecraft charging. We have developed a volume resistivity test system capable of measuring volume resistivity ≥1019 Ω·cm in vacuum and at cryogenic temperatures. Key components of this new setup include a custom test fixture and very low noise battery voltage supply.

Voltage Regulators for Photovoltaic Systems

Two simple circuits developed to provide voltage regulation for highvoltage (i.e., is greater than 75 volts) and low-voltage (i.e., is less than 36 volts) photovoltaic/battery power systems. Use of these circuits results in voltage regulator small, low-cost, and reliable, with very low power dissipation. Simple oscillator circuit controls photovoltaic-array current to regulate system voltage and control battery charging. Circuit senses battery (and system) voltage and adjusts array current to keep battery voltage from exceeding maximum voltage.

Human-rated Safety Certification of a High Voltage Robonaut Lithium-ion Battery

NASA's rigorous certification process is being followed for the R2 high voltage battery program for use of R2 on International Space Station (ISS). Rigorous development testing at appropriate levels to credible off-nominal conditions and review of test data led to design improvements for safety at the virtual cell, cartridge and battery levels. Tests were carried out at all levels to confirm that both hardware and software controls work. Stringent flight acceptance testing of the flight battery will be completed before launch for mission use on ISS.
