The great escape: tunneling out of microstate geometries

We compute the quasi-normal frequencies of scalars in asymptotically-flat microstate geometries that have the same charge as a D1-D5-P black hole, but whose long BTZ-like throat ends in a smooth cap. In general the wave equation is not separable, but we find a class of geometries in which the non-separable term is negligible and we can compute the quasi-normal frequencies using WKB methods. We argue that our results are a universal property of all microstate geometries with deeply-capped BTZ throats. These throats generate large redshifts, which lead to exceptionally-low-energy states with extremely long decay times, set by the central charge of the dual CFT to the power of twice the dimension of the operator dual to the mode. While these decay times are extremely long, we also argue that the energy decay is bounded, at large t , by (log( t )) – 2 and is comparable with the behavior of ultracompact stars, as one should expect for microstate geometries.

On the BPS Sector in AdS 3 /CFT 2 Holography

Abstract The BPS sector in duality has been fertile ground for the exploration of gauge/gravity duality, from the match between black hole entropy and the CFT elliptic genus to the construction of large families of geometrical microstates and the identification of the corresponding states in the CFT. Worldsheet methods provide a tool to further explore the relation between string theory in the bulk and corresponding CFT quantities. We show how to match individual BPS strings to their counterparts in the symmetric product orbifold CFT. In the process, we find an exact match between known constructions of microstate geometries and condensates of BPS supergraviton strings, and discuss their role in the broader collection of BPS states. In particular, we explore how microstate geometries develop singularities; and how string theory resolves these singularities through the appearance of “tensionless” string dynamics, which is the continuation of structures found in the weak‐coupling CFT into the strongly coupled regime described by string theory in the bulk. We argue that such “tensionless” strings are responsible for black hole microstructure in the bulk description.

Wigner meets ’t Hooft near the black hole horizon

Recent work on Euclidean quantum gravity, black hole thermodynamics, and the holographic principle has seen the return of random matrix models as a powerful tool. It is explained how they allow for the study of the physics well beyond the perturbative expansion. In fact, a fully nonperturbative treatment naturally unites the familiar approach of summing over smooth geometries of all topologies with the statistical approach to characterize the typical properties of a Hamiltonian. Remarkably, this leads to an explicit excavation of the underlying microstates of quantum gravity that has applications to the low-temperature dynamics of a large class of black holes.

Microstate geometries from gauged supergravity in three dimensions

The most detailed constructions of microstate geometries, and particularly of superstrata, are done using $\mathcal{N}$ = (1, 0) supergravity coupled to two anti-self-dual tensor multiplets in six dimensions. We show that an important sub-sector of this theory has a consistent truncation to a particular gauged supergravity in three dimensions. Our consistent truncation is closely related to those recently laid out by Samtleben and Sarioglu, which enables us to develop complete uplift formulae from the three-dimensional theory to six dimensions. We also find a new family of multi-mode superstrata, indexed by two arbitrary holomorphic functions of one complex variable, that live within our consistent truncation and use this family to provide extensive tests of our consistent truncation. We discuss some of the future applications of having an intrinsically three-dimensional formulation of a significant class of microstate geometries.

Entanglement wedge reconstruction and the information paradox

When absorbing boundary conditions are used to evaporate a black hole in AdS/CFT, we show that there is a phase transition in the location of the quantum Ryu-Takayanagi surface, at precisely the Page time. The new RT surface lies slightly inside the event horizon, at an infalling time approximately the scrambling time β/2 π logS BH into the past. We can immediately derive the Page curve, using the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, and the Hayden-Preskill decoding criterion, using entanglement wedge reconstruction. Because part of the interior is now encoded in the early Hawking radiation, the decreasing entanglement entropy of the black hole is exactly consistent with the semiclassical bulk entanglement of the late-time Hawking modes, despite the absence of a firewall.By studying the entanglement wedge of highly mixed states, we can understand the state dependence of the interior reconstructions. A crucial role is played by the existence of tiny, non-perturbative errors in entanglement wedge reconstruction. Directly after the Page time, interior operators can only be reconstructed from the Hawking radiation if the initial state of the black hole is known. As the black hole continues to evaporate, reconstructions become possible that simultaneously work for a large class of initial states. Using similar techniques, we generalise Hayden-Preskill to show how the amount of Hawking radiation required to reconstruct a large diary, thrown into the black hole, depends on both the energy and the entropy of the diary. Finally we argue that, before the evaporation begins, a single, state-independent interior reconstruction exists for any code space of microstates with entropy strictly less than the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, and show that this is sufficient state dependence to avoid the AMPSS typical-state firewall paradox.

Logarithmic corrections to the entropy of rotating black holes and black strings in AdS 5

We investigate logarithmic corrections to the entropy of supersymmetric, rotating, asymptotically AdS 5 black holes and black strings. Within the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence, the entropy of these black objects is determined, on the field theory side, by the superconformal index and the refined topologically twisted index of $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, respectively. We read off the logarithmic correction from those field-theoretic partition functions. On the gravity side, we take the near-horizon limit and apply the Kerr/CFT correspondence whose associated charged Cardy formula describes the degeneracy of states at subleading order and determines the logarithmic correction to the entropy. We find perfect agreement between these two approaches. Our results provide a window into precision microstate counting and demonstrate the efficacy of low-energy, symmetry-based approaches such as the Kerr/CFT correspondence for asymptotically AdS black objects under certain conditions.

The harder they fall, the bigger they become: tidal trapping of strings by microstate geometries

We consider the fate of a massless (or ultra-relativistic massive) string probe propagating down the BTZ-like throat of a microstate geometry in the D1-D5 system. Far down the throat, the probe encounters large tidal forces that stretch and excite the string. The excitations are limited by the very short transit time through the region of large tidal force, leading to a controlled approximation to tidal stretching. We show that the amount of stretching is proportional to the incident energy, and that it robs the probe of the kinetic energy it would need to travel back up the throat. As a consequence, the probe is effectively trapped far down the throat and, through repeated return passes, scrambles into the ensemble of nearby microstates. We propose that this tidal trapping may lead to weak gravitational echoes.

Linearizing the BPS equations with vector and tensor multiplets

We analyse the BPS equations of N = (1, 0) supergravity theory in six dimensions coupled to a vector and tensor multiplet. We show how these BPS equations can be reduced to a set of linear differential equations. This system is triangular in that each layer of equations, while linear, is quadratically sourced by the solutions of the previous layers. We examine several explicit examples and discuss the construction of new families of microstate geometries. We expect that the result presented here will open up new branches of superstrata in which the momentum is encoded in a new class of charge carriers.

Inscribing geodesic circles on the face of the superstratum

Abstract We use families of circular null geodesics as probes of a family of microstate geometries, known as (1,0, n) superstrata. These geometries carry a left-moving momentum wave and the behavior of some of the geodesic probes is very sensitive to this background wave. The left-moving geodesics behave like BPS particles and so can be placed in circular orbits anywhere in the geometry and actually “float” at fixed radius and angle in the three-dimensional “capped BTZ” geometry. The right-moving geodesics behave like non-BPS particles. We show that they provide a simple geometric characterization of the black-hole bound: when the momentum charge of the geometry is below this bound, such geodesics can be placed anywhere, but exceeding the bound, even by a small amount, means these geodesics are restricted to the deep interior of the geometry. We also show that for left-moving string probes, the tidal forces remain comparable with those of global AdS 3 . Nevertheless, for some of these probes, the “bumps” in the geometry induce an oscillatory mass term and we discuss how this can lead to chaotic scrambling of the state of the string.

Precision microstate counting for the entropy of wrapped M5-branes

We study the large N expansion of twisted partition functions of 3d N = 2 superconformal field theories arising from N M5-branes wrapped on a hyperbolic 3- manifold, M 3 . Via the 3d-3d correspondence, the partition functions of these 3d N = 2 superconformal field theories are related to simple topological invariants on the 3-manifold. The partition functions can be expressed using only classical and one-loop perturbative invariants of PSL(N, C) Chern-Simons theory around irreducible flat connections on M 3 . Using mathematical results on the asymptotics of the invariants, we compute the twisted partition functions in the large N limit including perturbative corrections to all orders in 1/N . Surprisingly, the perturbative expansion terminates at finite order. The leading part of the partition function is of order N 3 and agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the dual black holes. The subleading part, in particular the log N -terms in the field theory partition function is found to precisely match the one-loop quantum corrections in the dual eleven dimensional supergravity. The field theory results of other terms in 1/N provide a stringent prediction for higher order corrections in the holographic dual, which is M-theory.

Microstate counting via Bethe Ansätze in the 4d $ \mathcal{N} $ = 1 superconformal index

We study the superconfomal index of four-dimensional toric quiver gauge theories using a Bethe Ansatz approach recently applied by Benini and Milan. Relying on a particular set of solutions to the corresponding Bethe Ansatz equations we evaluate the superconformal index in the large N limit, thus avoiding to take any Cardy-like limit. We present explicit results for theories arising as a stack of N D 3 branes at the tip of toric Calabi-Yau cones: the conifold theory, the suspended pinch point gauge theory, the first del Pezzo theory and Y p,q quiver gauge theories. For a suitable choice of the chemical potentials of the theory we find agreement with predictions made for the same theories in the Cardy-like limit. However, for other regions of the domain of chemical potentials the superconformal index is modified and consequently the associated black hole entropy receives corrections. We work out explicitly the simple case of the conifold theory.

New superstrata from three-dimensional supergravity

We find a two-parameter family of generalized superstrata that emerge as smooth, supersymmetric solutions in three-dimensional gauged supergravity coupled to additional scalar fields. This new family of generalized superstrata are smooth microstate geometries and may be thought of as supersymmetric Coulomb-branch extensions of the original superstrata in which the underlying supertube undergoes an elliptical deformation. These solutions had already been obtained numerically, and as series solutions, to the equations of motion, and some of them were conjectured to be supersymmetric. Here we prove the supersymmetry of an entire two-parameter family and we obtain a highly non-trivial analytic and smooth solution for a one-parameter limit in which the global symmetry of the metric is enhanced to SO(3). We also confirm that the other known families of microstrata are not supersymmetric. We conclude with a cursory analysis of some of the singular brane distributions that can be accessed from three-dimensional gauged supergravity while preserving the same supersymmetries as the superstratum, and therefore of the three-charge black hole.

Q-balls meet fuzzballs: non-BPS microstate geometries

We construct a three-parameter family of non-extremal microstate geometries, or “microstrata”, that are dual to states and deformations of the D1-D5 CFT. These families are non-extremal analogues of superstrata. We find these microstrata by using a Q-ball-inspired Ansatz that reduces the equations of motion to solving for eleven functions of one variable. We then solve this system both perturbatively and numerically and the results match extremely well. We find that the solutions have normal mode frequencies that depend upon the amplitudes of the excitations. We also show that, at higher order in perturbations, some of the solutions, having started with normalizable modes, develop a “non-normalizable” part, suggesting that the microstrata represent states in a perturbed form of the D1-D5 CFT. This paper is intended as a “Proof of Concept” for the Q-ball-inspired approach, and we will describe how it opens the way to many interesting follow-up calculations both in supergravity and in the dual holographic field theory.
