Core–Shell Gold Nanoparticle-Star Copolymer Composites with Gradient Transfer and Transport Properties: Toward Electro-Optical Sensors and Catalysis

A series of hybrid core–shell nanomaterials was prepared by solvent phase transfer methods with gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) as a core and star copolymers (h-PEI-b-PCL-Cbz) as a shell—consisting of hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (h-PEI) with different poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) chain lengths and a carbazole-contained terminating agent (Cbz). By varying the PCL chain length, these core–shell nanomaterials exhibited gradient energy transfer properties, surface hydrophobicity, electropolymerizability, and ionic probe transport and diffusion properties. The systematic copolymer formation was verified with quadruple-detector size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). High-resolution atomic force microscopy-infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR) chemical mapping verified nanoparticle-substrate adhesion and film formation. The design of these hybrid NPs and elucidation of gradient properties will be useful for future applications of the core–shell systems in electro-optical sensing and catalysis.

SI-PET-RAFT Polymerization via Electrodeposited Macroinitiator Thin Films: Toward Biomedical and Sensing Applications

Surface-initiated photoinduced electron transfer-reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (SI-PET-RAFT) polymerization has been preferentially used for preparing thin polymeric film coatings due to its simple execution under ambient conditions (e.g., in air) and visible light requirement. In this study, we demonstrate the preparation of polymer brushes by SI-PET-RAFT polymerization on a thin macroinitiator film electrodeposited on electrically conductive indium tin oxide and gold surfaces. An electrochemically active carbazole-containing chain transfer agent as macroinitiator was shown to be not only effective in mediating SI-PET-RAFT polymerization for various monomers but also capable of forming block copolymers. Additionally, the fabricated polymer brush films were able to encapsulate colloidal gold nanoparticles, thereby demonstrating potential use for biomedical and sensing applications.

Improved Mechanical Adhesion Enabled by Bilayer Hole Transport Layers in Perovskite Solar Cells

We investigate buried-interface mechanical integrity in metal-halide perovskite half-cells using carbazole-based self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and bilayer hole transport layers composed of metal oxide underlayers and SAMs. Combining macroscopic and microscopic characterization, we quantify interfacial fracture energy (Gc) and identify delamination pathways. SAM deposition on NiOx increases Gc by approximately 10-fold compared with ITO, highlighting the importance of oxide underlayer selection. To isolate the effect of removing noncovalently bonded SAM molecules, we use vapor-deposited perovskite as a solvent-free model system, decoupling the rinse step inherent to solution processing. Removing loosely bound SAM molecules increases Gc from 0.94 +- 0.08 J.m-2 to 4.82 +- 0.79 J.m-2. These results show that oxide selection and SAM binding quality are both critical for strengthening buried interfaces and designing mechanically robust perovskite solar cells.

Synergy between Photoluminescence and Charge Transport Achieved by Finely Tuning Polymeric Backbones for Efficient Light-Emitting Transistor

The lack of design principle for developing high-performance polymer materials displaying strong fluorescence and high ambipolar charge mobilities limited their performance in organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs), electrically pumped organic laser, and other advanced electronic devices. Here, a series of semiladder polymers by copolymerization of weak acceptors (TPTQ or TPTI) and weak donors (fluorene (F) or carbazole (C)) have been developed for luminescent and charge transporting properties. It was found that enhanced planarity, high crystallinity, and a delicate balance in interchain aggregation obtained in the new copolymer, TPTQ-F, contributed to high ambipolar charge mobilities and photoluminescent quantum yield. TPTQ-F showed excellent performance in solution-processed multilayered OLET devices with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 5.3%.

Structural and Electronic Tuning of Luminescent Zn II Complexes Based on an o -Terphenyl Ligand Motif

Here, the structural and photophysical properties of five chiral Zn complexes incorporating a carbazolate (Cz) donor that is electronically decoupled from a pyridyl acceptor by an ortho -connection to a bridging phenylene group are presented. The bidentate ligand in the unsubstituted bis-ligated parent complex was methylated at key positions to constrain the torsional freedom of the donor/acceptor moieties, resulting in three structurally modified bis-ligated derivatives, all exhibiting energy gaps between the singlet and triplet excited states (ΔE ST ) between 22 and 27 meV. Methylation improves the photoluminescence quantum yield (up to 30% in solution), while the low ΔE ST of these complexes allows for dual-emission properties in all of the bis-ligated derivatives. Structural modification of the Cz/pyridyl ligand was also investigated by linking the unsubstituted bidentate ligand to generate a tetradentate, tetrapodal ligand. The solution-state structure of the tetradentate ligand is similar in its free and ligated forms, featuring a binding site reminiscent of enzymes and metal-sequestering ligands. The resulting tetradentate complex [Zn(N 2 R 2 )] shows enhanced through-bond conjugation, increasing the ΔE ST to 89 meV, thereby eliminating the dual-emission characteristics of the bis-ligated complexes. Furthermore, this complex shows a 50-fold improvement in hydrolytic stability in organic solution relative to the parent complex. These compounds and their analyses are intended to enrich the understanding of compounds exhibiting through-space charge transfer and guide the search for earth-abundant metal complexes for applications in photosensitization and luminescence.

In Crystallo Synthesis of a Triplet Silver Nitrene

Reactive silver nitrenes are proposed intermediates in Ag-catalyzed C–H amination and olefin aziridination reactions. Synthesis and characterization of reactive Ag nitrenes has proven elusive due to fleeting lifetimes and argentophilic aggregation of Ag(I) precursors in solution. Here, we report the templated in crystallo synthesis and characterization of a mononuclear Ag nitrene supported by a tris(pyrazolyl)borate ligand. Photolytic N 2 elimination from the corresponding aryl azide complex yields a structurally defined Ag nitrene with a triplet ground state, as confirmed by crystallography, magnetic measurements, and quantum chemical calculations. This species displays both stoichiometric and catalytic nitrene transfer reactivity, enabling carbazole and indole formation from organic azides. These results leverage in crystallo templating to isolate a mononuclear triplet nitrene of Ag and provide a platform to experimentally elucidate ligand-controlled selectivity in Ag-catalyzed nitrene transfer catalysis.

Tailoring the cavities of hydrogen-bonded amphidynamic crystals using weak contacts: towards faster molecular machines

This work describes the use of C–H∙∙∙F–C contacts in the solid-state from the stator towards the rotator to fine-tune their internal motion, by constructing a set of interactions that generate close-fitting cavities in three supramolecular rotors 1–3I. The crystal structures of these rotors, determined by synchrotron radiation experiments at different temperatures, show the presence of such C–H∙∙∙F–C contacts between extended carbazole stators featuring fluorinated phenyl rings and the 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) rotator. According to the 2 H NMR results, using deuterated samples, and periodic density functional theory computations, the rotators experience fast angular displacements (preferentially 120° jumps) due to their low rotational activation energies (E a = 0.8–2.0 kcal mol -1 ). The higher rotational barrier for 1 (2.0 kcal mol -1 ) is associated with a larger number of weak C–H∙∙∙F–C contacts generated by the stators. This strategy offers the possibility to explore the correlation among weak intermolecular forces, cavity shape, and internal dynamics, which has strong implications in the design of future fine-tuned amphidynamic crystals.

Electrocatalytic water oxidation performance in an extended porous organic framework with a covalent alliance of distinct Ru sites

The rational synthesis of durable, earth-abundant efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) from water is one of the most important routes for storing renewable energy and minimizing fossil fuel combustion. The prime hurdles for effectively utilizing commercial RuO 2 as (OER) electrocatalysts are its very low stability, catalyst deactivation, and high cost. In this work, we explored a Ru-integrated porous organic polymer (Ru@Bpy-POP) by a facile one-pot Friedel–Crafts alkylation strategy between redox-active (Ru(demob) 3 Cl 2 ) and a carbazole unit, which is composed of unique features including an extended framework unit, isolated active sites, and tunable electrode kinetics. Ru@Bpy-POP can serve as a bridge between a Metal–Organic Framework (MOF) and POP-based catalytic systems with a balanced combination of covalent bonds (structural stability) and open metal sites (single site catalysis). Ru@Bpy-POP, deposited on a three-dimensional nickel foam electrode support, exhibits a promising electrocatalytic OER activity with an ultra-low ruthenium loading compared to a benchmark RuO 2 catalyst, providing an overpotential of about 270 mV to reach 10 mA cm –2 in an alkaline medium. Moreover, a high current density of 248 mA cm –2 was achieved for the Ru@Bpy-POP catalyst at only 1.6 V (vs. RHE), which is much higher than 91 mA cm –2 for commercial RuO 2 . The robust, albeit highly conjugated, POP framework not only triggered facile electro-kinetics but also suppressed aggregation and metallic corrosion during electrolysis. In particular, the benefits of covalent integration of distinct Ru sites into the framework can modulate intermediate adsorption and charge density, which contributes to its exceptional OER activity. All of the critical steps involved in OER are complemented by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, which suggest that electrocatalytic water oxidation proceeds from a closed-shell configuration to open-shell electronic configurations with high-spin states. Finally, these open-shell configurations are more stable than their closed-shell counterparts by 1 eV, improving the overall catalytic activity.

Robust chain aggregation of low-entropy rigid ladder polymers in solution

Conjugated polymers have been widely investigated where ladder-type conjugated polymers receive more attention due to their rigid backbones and extraordinary properties. However, the understanding of how the rigid conformation of ladder polymers translates to material properties is still limited. Here, we systematically investigated the solution aggregation properties of a carbazole-derived conjugated ladder polymer (LP) and its analogous non-ladder control polymer (CP) via light scattering, neutron scattering, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy characterization techniques, revealing a highly robust, temperature-insensitive aggregation behavior of the LP. The experimental findings were further validated by computational molecular dynamics simulations. Here we found that the peak positions and intensities of the UV spectra of the LP remained constant between 20 °C and 120 °C in chlorobenzene solution. The polymer also showed a stable hydrodynamic radius measured by dynamic light scattering from 20 °C to 70 °C in the chlorobenzene solution. Using small-angle neutron scattering, no Guinier region was reached in the measured q range down to 0.008 Å –1 , even at elevated temperature. In contrast, the non-ladder control polymer CP was fully soluble in the chlorobenzene solvent without the observation of any notable aggregates. The Brownian dynamics simulation showed that during polymer aggregation, the entropy change of the LP was significantly less negative than that of the non-ladder control polymer. These findings revealed the low entropy nature of rigid conjugated ladder polymers and the low entropy penalty for their aggregation, which is promising for highly robust intermolecular interactions at high temperatures. Such a unique thermodynamic feature of rigid ladder polymers can be leveraged in the design and application of next-generation electronic and optoelectronic devices that function under unconventional high temperature conditions.

Electrochemical quantification of phosphonic acid passivated surface sites of NiO x for perovskite solar cells

Nickel oxide (NiO x ) is among the few p-type metal oxide semiconductors considered a strong candidate for hole transport layers in halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, its reactivity with perovskite ions poses significant challenges to achieving high efficiency and long-term stability. Here, we investigate passivation of detrimental reactive surface sites on NiO x by carbazole phosphonic acids. We leverage electrochemical cyclic voltammetry (CV) of NiO x electrodes as a proxy measure for the redox activity that afflicts PSCs. From the CVs, we derive a metric, N (units cm −2 ), that relates to the number of redox active sites on NiO x surfaces. We observe a statistically significant negative correlation between PSC efficiency and N-value that indicates PSCs are more efficient on NiO x with lower electrochemical reactivity. The new mechanistic insight into NiO x passivation demonstrates it requires a reducing agent and Brønsted acid combination, providing a broadly applicable approach for evaluating and enhancing the stability and performance of NiO x -based interfaces in photovoltaics.

Discovery of hydrogen storage molecules using large language models and machine learning

Accelerating the discovery of new molecules with targeted properties is a central challenge in molecular design. In this contribution, we present an AI-driven molecular discovery framework that integrates Large Language Models (LLMs) for generative molecular design with Machine Learning (ML)-based screening to identify novel Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) candidates. Using the developed framework, LOHC molecules were systematically generated, evaluated, and refined iteratively, combining LLM-guided molecular generation and ML-predicted hydrogenation enthalpies (Δ H ), under physicochemical property constraints such as optimal melting points (MP), desired hydrogen storage capacity (wt% H 2 ), and synthetic accessibility (SA) scores. This approach enabled the discovery of 42 new LOHC candidates in two distinct campaigns, one seeded with experimentally known and another with previously computationally identified LOHCs, respectively. Although we began with different numbers of starting molecules (31 vs . 7 seed molecules), both runs yielded a comparable number of viable candidates, suggesting an influence of chemically intuitive seed molecule selection for success. Selected LOHC molecules, such as 3-methyl pyridine, 1-ethylnapthalene, 1,1-diphenylethane, and benzofuran, were experimentally tested and compared with benchmark LOHCs (toluene and 9-ethylcarbazole) for hydrogenation using a series of commercial supported metal catalysts. The order of conversion into fully hydrogenated products at 200 °C was 3-methyl pyridine (100%) > 9-ethyl carbazole (86.4%) > 2,3-benzofuran (74%) > 1,1-diphenylethane (66.9%) > 1-ethylnapthalene (66.7%) > toluene (57%), further validating the AI-guided molecular design. This study demonstrates promise of LLM-driven molecular design in conjunction with ML-based screening for accelerated discovery and design of molecules.

Stabilized hole-selective layer for high-performance inverted p-i-n perovskite solar cells

P-i-n geometry perovskite solar cells (PSCs) offer simplified fabrication, greater amenability to charge extraction layers, and low-temperature processing over n-i-p counterparts. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) can enhance the performance of p-i-n PSCs but ultrathin SAMs can be thermally unstable. Here we report a thermally robust hole-selective layer comprised of nickel oxide (NiO x ) nanoparticle film with a surface-anchored (4-(3,11-dimethoxy-7H-dibenzo[c,g]carbazol-7-yl)butyl)phosphonic acid (MeO-4PADBC) SAM that can improve and stabilize the NiO x /perovskite interface. The energetic alignment and favorable contact and binding between NiO x /MeO-4PADBC and perovskite reduced the voltage deficit of PSCs with various perovskite compositions and led to strong interface toughening effects under thermal stress. The resulting 1.53–electron-volt devices achieved 25.6% certified power conversion efficiency and maintained >90% of their initial efficiency after continuously operating at 65 degrees Celsius for 1200 hours under 1-sun illumination.

Strong-Bonding Hole-Transport Layers Reduce Ultraviolet Degradation of Perovskite Solar Cells

The light-emitting diodes (LEDs) used in indoor testing of perovskite solar cells do not expose them to the levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation that they would receive in actual outdoor use. We report degradation mechanisms of p-i-n-structured perovskite solar cells under unfiltered sunlight and with LEDs. Weak chemical bonding between perovskites and polymer hole-transporting materials (HTMs) and transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) dominate the accelerated A-site cation migration, rather than direct degradation of HTMs. An aromatic phosphonic acid, [2-(9-ethyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl)ethyl]phosphonic acid (EtCz3EPA), enhanced bonding at the perovskite/HTM/TCO region with a phosphonic acid group bonded to TCOs and a nitrogen group interacting with lead in perovskites. A hybrid HTM of EtCz3EPA with strong hole-extraction polymers retained high efficiency and improved the UV stability of perovskite devices, and a champion perovskite minimodule-independently measured by the Perovskite PV Accelerator for Commercializing Technologies (PACT) center-retained operational efficiency of >16% after 29 weeks of outdoor testing.

Bimetallic Coinage Metal Complexes of Tetradentate ortho Ter arylene Ligands

The synthesis, structural and photophysical properties of five bimetallic coinage metal complexes of three tetradentate charge-transfer (CT) ligands are presented. The ligand structures incorporate donor/acceptor moieties electronically decoupled by ortho connection to a bridging biphenylene group. The M M distances observed in the crystal structures of the bimetallic complexes are shorter than the sum of the Van der Waals radii of the metal ions, suggesting stabilizing interactions between the d10 metal centers. Additionally, short distances between the bridging biphenylene and metal atoms suggest arylene metal interactions. Bimetallic Cu, Ag, and Au complexes of the ligand incorporating a carbazole donor and pyridyl acceptor (N2R22-) show absorption and emission energies that trend with the ionization potential of each metal, indicating metal character in the excited state. These properties contrast with our previously reported mononuclear Zn complex of N2R22-The structural and photophysical properties of five bimetallic d10 coinage metal complexes were presented. The M M distances observed in the crystal structures of the bimetallic complexes are shorter than the sum of the metals’ Van der Waals radii, suggesting attractive interactions between the d10 metal centers. Additionally, short distances between the bridging biphenylene and metal atoms suggest arylene metal interactions. The absorption and emission spectra of the bimetallic complexes redshift based on the oxidation potential of the metal ion. This suggests involvement of metal based orbitals in the excited state transitions of the bimetallic complexes, which was corroborated by molecular modeling. High photoluminescent quantum yields were observed in solution and in rigid media (up to PL = 0.75), and the excited state lifetimes in solution were found to exceed several microseconds.
