Metal to Wigner-Mott insulator transition in two-leg ladders

Here we study theoretically the quantum phase transition from a metal to a Wigner-Mott insulator at fractional commensurate filling on a two-leg ladder. We show that a continuous transition out of a symmetry-preserving Luttinger liquid metal is possible where the onset of insulating behavior is accompanied by the breaking of the lattice translation symmetry. At fillings $v$=1/$m$ per spin per unit cell, we find that the spin degrees of freedom also acquire a gap at the Wigner-Mott transition for odd integer $m$. In contrast for even integer $m$, the spin sector remains gapless and the resulting insulator is a ladder analog of the two-dimensional spinon surface state. In both cases, a charge neutral spinless mode remains gapless across the Wigner-Mott transition. We discuss physical properties of these transitions and comment on insights obtained for thinking about continuous Wigner-Mott transitions in two-dimensional systems which are being studied in moire materials.

Measurements of the $W$ boson rapidity, helicity, double-differential cross sections, and charge asymmetry in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt {s}$ = 13 TeV

The differential cross section and charge asymmetry for inclusive W boson production at s=13 TeV is measured for the two transverse polarization states as a function of the W boson absolute rapidity. The measurement uses events in which a W boson decays to a neutrino and either a muon or an electron. The data sample of proton-proton collisions recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016 corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb-1. The differential cross section and its value normalized to the total inclusive W boson production cross section are measured over the rapidity range |yW|<2.5. In addition to the total fiducial cross section, the W boson double-differential cross section, d2σ/dpTℓd|ηℓ|, and the charge asymmetry are measured as functions of the charged lepton transverse momentum and pseudorapidity. The precision of these measurements is used to constrain the parton distribution functions of the proton using the next-to-leading order NNPDF3.0 set.

Mesogenesis through the ephemeral dark decay of Beauty

Mesogenesis provides a path for generating the baryon asymmetry of the Universe, using only the CP violation furnished by the Standard Model in the decay of B mesons. While this is an intriguing possibility, it is largely constrained by the data on B meson branching fractions into baryons and missing energy carried into the dark sector. We point out that it is possible to make this branching fraction dominant only in the early Universe, through an ultralight scalar coupled to the dark sector and the Standard Model leptons. A scenario is examined where the thermal density of muons in the early Universe temporarily lowers the mass of a dark fermion, allowing for efficient B meson decays. This `dark’ decay channel is shut off later when the muon number density falls, making the scenario compatible with flavor data. Our model can be consistent with the LHC constraints on color-charged heavy bosons required to implement Mesogenesis; such states may be discovered in the future runs as their masses cannot be far above the current bounds. We also outline other possible signals, which can arise in future displaced vertex searches, long range force searches, and observations of neutron star binary mergers.

Fluctuations analysis of spin susceptibility: Néel ordering revisited in dynamical mean field theory

Here in this paper, we revisit the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase diagram of the single-band three-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model on a simple cubic lattice studied within the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). Although this problem has been investigated extensively in the literature, a comprehensive understanding of the impact of the different one- and, in particular, two-particle local correlation functions of DMFT on the AF transition temperature is still missing. We have, hence, performed a fluctuation analysis of T N with respect to different local bosonic fluctuations (charge, spin, particle-particle) contained in the two-particle vertex of DMFT. Our results indicate that, beyond weak coupling, the screening of the DMFT vertex by local fluctuations leads to an enhancement of T N with respect to a random phase approximation (RPA) like calculation where this vertex is replaced by the bare interaction. The overall suppression of T N in DMFT with respect to RPA is then solely due to the incoherence introduced by the DMFT self-energy in the one-particle Green's functions. This illustrates the Janus-faced role of the local moment formation in the DMFT solution of the Hubbard model, which leads to completely opposite effects in the one- and two-particle correlation functions.

Search for resonant $WZ$ production in the fully leptonic final state in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$= 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for a $WZ$ resonance, in the fully leptonic final state (electrons or muons), is performed using 139 fb –1 of data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The results are interpreted in terms of a singly charged Higgs boson of the Georgi–Machacek model, produced by WZ fusion, and of a Heavy Vector Triplet, with the resonance produced by $WZ$ fusion or the Drell–Yan process. No significant excess over the Standard Model prediction is observed and limits are set on the production cross-section times branching ratio as a function of the resonance mass for these processes.

Light-induced electron pairing in a bilayer structure

We demonstrate the existence of doubly charged exciton states in strongly screened bilayers of transition metal dichalcogenide layers. These complexes are important because they are preformed electron pairs that can, in principle, undergo Bose–Einstein condensation, in which case they would also form a new type of superconductor, consisting of stable bosons with net charge. Our measurements include 1) continuous control of the doping density with both positive and negative carriers, showing the expected population dependencies on the free carrier density, and 2) measurement of the dependence on magnetic field, showing that this new bound state is a spin triplet. These results imply that it is promising to look for superconductivity in this system.

Multidifferential study of identified charged hadron distributions in Z -tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =13$ TeV

Jet fragmentation functions are measured for the first time in proton-proton collisions for charged pions, kaons, and protons within jets recoiling against a Z boson. The charged-hadron distributions are studied longitudinally and transversely to the jet direction for jets with transverse momentum 20 < p T < 100 GeV and in the pseudorapidity range 2.5 < η <4. The data sample was collected with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.64 fb –1 . Triple differential distributions as a function of the hadron longitudinal momentum fraction, hadron transverse momentum, and jet transverse momentum are also measured for the first time. This helps constrain transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation functions. Differences in the shapes and magnitudes of the measured distributions for the different hadron species provide insights into the hadronization process for jets predominantly initiated by light quarks.

Charge self-consistent density functional theory plus ghost rotationally invariant slave-boson theory for correlated materials

We present a charge self-consistent density functional theory combined with the ghost rotationally invariant slave-boson (DFT+gRISB) formalism for studying correlated materials. Here, this method is applied to SrVO 3 and NiO, representing prototypical correlated metals and charge-transfer insulators. For SrVO 3 , we demonstrate that DFT+gRISB yields an accurate equilibrium volume and effective mass close to experimentally observed values. Regarding NiO, DFT+gRISB enables the simultaneous description of charge-transfer and Mott-Hubbard bands, significantly enhancing the accuracy of the original DFT+RISB approach. Furthermore, the calculated equilibrium volume and spectral function reasonably agree with experimental observations.

Search for charged-lepton-flavour violation in Z-boson decays with the ATLAS detector

Leptons with essentially the same properties apart from their mass are grouped into three families (or flavours). The number of leptons of each flavour is conserved in interactions, but this is not imposed by fundamental principles. Since the formulation of the standard model of particle physics, the observation of flavour oscillations among neutrinos has shown that lepton flavour is not conserved in neutrino weak interactions. So far, there has been no experimental evidence that this also occurs in interactions between charged leptons. Such an observation would be a sign of undiscovered particles or a yet unknown type of interaction. Here the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN reports a constraint on lepton-flavour-violating effects in weak interactions, searching for Z -boson decays into a τ lepton and another lepton of different flavour with opposite electric charge. The branching fractions for these decays are measured to be less than 8.1 × 10 –6 ( eτ ) and 9.5 × 10 –6 ( μτ ) at the 95% confidence level using 139 fb –1 of proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV and 20.3 fb –1 at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV. These results supersede the limits from the Large Electron–Positron Collider experiments conducted more than two decades ago.

Correlated insulator of excitons in WSe 2 /WS 2 moiré superlattices

A panoply of unconventional electronic states has been observed in moiré superlattices. Engineering similar bosonic phases remains, however, largely unexplored. We report the observation of a bosonic correlated insulator in tungsten diselenide/tungsten disulfide (WSe 2 /WS 2 ) moiré superlattices composed of excitons, that is, tightly bound electron-hole pairs. We develop a pump probe spectroscopy method that we use to observe an exciton incompressible state at exciton filling ν ex = 1 and charge neutrality, indicating a correlated insulator of excitons. With varying charge density, the bosonic correlated insulator continuously transitions into an electron correlated insulator at charge filling ν e = 1, suggesting a mixed correlated insulating state between the two limits. Our studies establish semiconducting moiré superlattices as an intriguing platform for engineering bosonic phases.

Charge transfer rate constants for the carotenoid-porphyrin-C 60 molecular triad dissolved in tetrahydrofuran: The spin-boson model vs the linearized semiclassical approximation

Charge transfer rate constants were calculated for the carotenoid-porphyrin-C 60 (CPC 60 ) molecular triad dissolved in explicit tetrahydrofuran. The calculation was based on mapping the all-atom anharmonic Hamiltonian of this system onto the spin-boson Hamiltonian. The mapping was based on discretizing the spectral density from the time correlation function of the donor–acceptor potential energy gap, as obtained from all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. Different spin-boson Hamiltonians were constructed for each of the possible transitions between the three excited electronic states in two different triad conformations. The rate constants of three possible transitions were calculated via the quantum-mechanically exact Fermi’s golden rule (FGR), as well as a progression of more approximate expressions that lead to the classical Marcus expression. The advantage of the spin-boson approach is that once the mapping is established, the quantum-mechanically exact FGR and the hierarchy of approximations are known in closed form. The classical Marcus charge transfer rate constants obtained with the spin-boson Hamiltonians were found to reproduce those obtained from all-atom simulations with the linearized semiclassical approximation, thereby confirming the equivalence of the two approaches for this system. Furthermore, within the spin-boson Hamiltonian, we also found that the quantum-mechanically exact FGR rate constants were significantly enhanced compared to the classical Marcus theory rate constants for two out of three transitions in one of the two conformations under consideration. The results confirm that mapping to the spin-boson model can yield accurate predictions for charge transfer rate constants in a system as complex as CPC 60 dissolved in tetrahydrofuran.

Combined search for electroweak production of winos, binos, higgsinos, and sleptons in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A combination of the results of several searches for the electroweak production of the supersymmetric partners of standard model bosons, and of charged leptons, is presented. All searches use proton-proton collision data at s = 13 TeV recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016–2018. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of up to 137 fb − 1 . The results are interpreted in terms of simplified models of supersymmetry. Two new interpretations are added with this combination: a model spectrum with the bino as the lightest supersymmetric particle together with mass-degenerate Higgsinos decaying to the bino and a standard model boson, and the compressed-spectrum region of a previously studied model of slepton pair production. Improved analysis techniques are employed to optimize sensitivity for the compressed spectra in the wino and slepton pair production models. The results are consistent with expectations from the standard model. The combination provides a more comprehensive coverage of the model parameter space than the individual searches, extending the exclusion by up to 125 GeV, and also targets some of the intermediate gaps in the mass coverage. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Charged skyrmions and topological origin of superconductivity in magic-angle graphene

Topological solitons, a class of stable nonlinear excitations, appear in diverse domains as in the Skyrme model of nuclear forces. Here, we argue that similar excitations play an important role in a remarkable material obtained on stacking and twisting two sheets of graphene. Close to a magic twist angle, insulating behavior is observed, which gives way to superconductivity on doping. Here, we propose a unifying description of both observations. A symmetry breaking condensate leads to the ordered insulator, while topological solitons in the condensate—skyrmions—are shown to be charge 2 e bosons. Condensation of skyrmions leads to a superconductor, whose physical properties we calculate. More generally, we show how topological textures can mitigate Coulomb repulsion and provide a previously unexplored route to superconductivity. Our mechanism not only clarifies why several other moiré materials do not show superconductivity but also points to unexplored platforms where robust superconductivity is anticipated.

Search for a resonance decaying to a W boson and a photon in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV using leptonic W boson decays

A search for a new charged particle X with mass between 0.3 and 2.0 TeV decaying to a W boson and a photon is presented, using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Particle X has electric charge $\pm$ 1 and is assumed to have spin 0. The search is performed using the electron and muon decays of the W boson. No significant excess above the predicted background is observed. The upper limit at 95% confidence level on the product of the production cross section of the X and its branching fraction to a W boson and a photon is found to be 94 (137) fb for a 0.3 TeV resonance and 0.75 (0.81) fb for a 2.0 TeV resonance, for an X width-to-mass ratio of 0.01% (5%). This search presents the most stringent constraints to date on the existence of such resonances across the probed mass range. A statistical combination with an earlier study based on the hadronic decay mode of the W boson is also performed, and the upper limit at 95% confidence level for a 2.0 TeV resonance is reduced to 0.50 (0.63) fb for an X width-to-mass ratio of 0.01% (5%).

Search for heavy long-lived charged particles with large ionization energy loss in proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV

Abstract A search for heavy, long-lived, charged particles with large ionization energy loss within the silicon tracker of the CMS experiment is presented. A data set of proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV, collected in 2017 and 2018 at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb −1, is used in this analysis. Two different approaches for the search are taken. A new method exploits the independence of the silicon pixel and strips measurements, while the second method improves on previous techniques using ionization to determine a mass selection. No significant excess of events above the background expectation is observed. The results are interpreted in the context of the pair production of supersymmetric particles, namely gluinos, top squarks, and tau sleptons, and of the Drell-Yan pair production of fourth generation (τ′) leptons with an electric charge equal to or twice the absolute value of the electron charge (e). An interpretation of a Z’ boson decaying to two τ′ leptons with an electric charge equal to 2e is presented for the first time. The 95% confidence upper limits on the production cross section are extracted for each of these hypothetical particles.

Constraining neutrino-nucleon form factors with charged-current scattering at the Electron-Ion Collider

Next-generation neutrino oscillation experiments such as the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment require percent-level knowledge of neutrino-nucleon interaction cross sections. The nucleon axial form factor 𝐹 𝐴 ⁡(𝑄 2 ), parametrized by the axial mass 𝑀 𝐴 , is the dominant source of uncertainty in the quasielastic channel, and the parity-violating structure function 𝑥⁢𝐹 3 is poorly constrained on free nucleons. We propose using charged-current (CC) electron-proton scattering at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) to address both problems simultaneously. The measurement exploits three key features of the EIC: (1) helicity-selective electron bunches provide in situ electromagnetic background rejection; (2) a longitudinally polarized proton target enables extraction of 𝐹 𝐴 ⁡(𝑄 2 ) through the target-spin asymmetry 𝐴 𝑈⁢𝐿 ; and (3) the 𝑦-distribution leverage in CC deep inelastic scattering (DIS) separates 𝐹 2 and 𝑥⁢𝐹 3 on a free proton, without nuclear corrections. Using a Fisher information analysis at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ =141 GeV with 500 fb −1 of integrated luminosity, we project the Cramér-Rao statistical floor of 𝛿⁢𝑀 𝐴 ≈0.03 GeV (3%). Incorporating first-order realistic detector effects, such as zero-degree calorimeter acceptance, 𝑄 2 smearing (5%), and background noise from helicity subtraction, the projected sensitivity is severely background-limited due to the small signal-to-background ratio (𝑆/𝐵 ≈ 3 ×10 −4 ) in the elastic channel. Achieving competitive sensitivity (𝛿⁢𝑀 𝐴 ≈ 0.14 GeV) would require ∼10 −7 background suppression, 3 orders of magnitude beyond current projections. The CC DIS 𝑦 distribution provides subpercent extraction of 𝑥⁢𝐹$^{𝑊^{−}}_{3}$ over 0.05 < 𝑥 < 0.5, representing the most robust electroweak measurement in the near term.
