Field-Focused Load-Leveled Dynamic Wireless Charging System for Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles offer much higher well-to-wheel efficiency than gasoline vehicles and can significantly reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil, lower greenhouse gas emissions, improve local air quality, and support continued technological and economic growth. Despite these advantages, widespread adoption remains constrained by limitations in current battery technology, including high cost, limited driving range, and long charging times. One promising approach to address these challenges is to reduce onboard energy storage and instead deliver power wirelessly to vehicles while they are at a traffic stop or in motion.

Spin-related phenomena in spin 3/2 charge carrier holes systems

Charge carrier holes provide a remarkable system for spintronics and quantum information technology. In this review paper, I discuss spin-related phenomena in three-dimensional and low-dimensional hole systems. Special attention is paid to the mutual transformation of heavy and light holes at the boundary of quantum wells and wires that governs values of parameters defining hole spectra in quantum wells, wires and dots, such as effective masses, g-factors and Rashba and Dresselhaus spin–orbit constants. Recently, topological phenomena in condensed matter systems, such as emergence of Majorana zero modes and non-Abelian phases in the fractional quantum Hall effect, sparked considerable interest of researchers. Charge carrier holes turn out to be a remarkable setting for possible observation of these phenomena and advancing topological quantum computing. I discuss the spectra and wavefunctions of two-dimensional holes in magnetic field. While there is a semiclassical range of parameters when heavy and light holes can be described by equidistant Landau levels, ground-level holes and holes in a few low-lying excited states behave as species completely different from electrons. Especially interesting are crossings in hole spectra in magnetic field. Hole–hole interactions can substantially differ from electron–electron interactions. Apart from the difference in exchange splitting, this shows in possible emergence of even denominator fractional quantum Hall state in the ground hole level in magnetic field. I also briefly discuss spintronic phenomena, such as mutual transformation of angular momentum (spin) of holes and electric current, as well as spin-related interference effects in hole transport. Recent developments in a system of Ge hole quantum dots offer new perspectives for hole-based systems.

Battery system management through non-linear estimation of battery state of charge

Systems, methods, and computer media for battery system management and non-linear estimation of battery state of charge are provided herein. Battery data is received for a time period over which a battery system has operated. The battery data represents the actual performance of the battery system over the time period. Sub-periods of charging or discharging can be identified in the time period. For the sub-periods of time, a curve can be fit to the battery data. Using the curves for the battery data for the sub-periods of time, an expected performance of the battery system, over a range of states-of-charge, can be determined. Operating instructions for the battery system can be provided based on the expected performance.

Two-Dimensional Molecular Charge Density Waves in Single-Layer-Thick Islands of a Dirac Fermion System

Charge density waves have been intensely studied in inorganic materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides however its counterpart in organic materials has yet to be explored in detail. Here we report the finding of a robust two dimensional charge density waves in molecular layers formed by α-(BEDT-TTF) 2 -I 3 on a Ag(111) surface. Low temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy images of a multi-layer thick α-(BEDT-TTF) 2 -I 3 on Ag(111) substrate reveal coexistence of 5a0 x 5a0 and √31 a0 x √31 a0 R9° charge density wave patterns commensurate with the underlying molecular lattice at 80 K. Both charge density wave patterns remain in nano-size molecular islands with just a single constituent molecular-layer thickness at 80 K and 5 K. Local tunneling spectroscopy measurements reveal the variation of the gap from 244 meV to 288 meV between the maximum and minimum charge density wave locations. Density functional theory calculations further confirm a vertical positioning of BEDT-TTF molecules in the molecular layer. While the observed charge density wave patterns are stable for the defect sites, they can be reversely switched for one molecular lattice site by means of inelastic tunnelling electron energy transfer with the electron energies exceeding 400 meV using a scanning tunneling microscope manipulation scheme.

A Control Strategy for Improving Resiliency of an DC Fast Charging EV System

As DC fast charging electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure continues to expand, potential challenges loom. One issue is the potential for EV charger outages due to electrical grid voltage transients. Today, EV chargers are expected to disconnect under a severe voltage sag (below 70%) which reduces electric vehicle charging infrastructure resilience. This work proposes a droop-control solution to ride-through voltage sags and maintain operation. The control solution is presented in a controller hardware in the loop platform.

Charged multihadron systems in lattice QCD+QED

Systems with the quantum numbers of up to 12 charged and neutral pseudoscalar mesons, as well as one-, two-, and three-nucleon systems, are studied using dynamical lattice quantum chromodynamics and quantum electrodynamics (QCD+QED) calculations and effective field theory. QED effects on hadronic interactions are determined by comparing systems of charged and neutral hadrons after tuning the quark masses to remove strong isospin breaking effects. A nonrelativistic effective field theory, which perturbatively includes finite-volume Coulomb effects, is analyzed for systems of multiple charged hadrons and found to accurately reproduce the lattice QCD+QED results. QED effects on charged multihadron systems beyond Coulomb photon exchange are determined by comparing the two- and three-body interaction parameters extracted from the lattice QCD+QED results for charged and neutral multihadron systems.

An Integrated Electric Vehicle Drive Motor and Wireless Charger

This work proposes an in-wheel electric vehicle-motor in which the motor windings also act as receiver coils in a wireless charging system. Vehicle wireless charging systems normally include a receiver coil, compensation network, rectifier and battery charger. The proposed concept would eliminate the need for a separate receiver coil. Studies based on two-dimensional finite element analysis are carried out to verify the feasibility of the concept. An external rotor Halbach array rotor with single layer fractional slot concentrated wingdings is found to be a suitable motor topology which would enable the use of one or more motor coils as a receiver coil. The paper also discusses the design modifications and considerations required to enable this.

Thermal Analysis of a 100 kW Polyphase Wireless Power Transfer System

Charging Electric Vehicles (EVs) fast and safely has a crucial role in the future of the EV technology. High-power Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) helps to significantly decrease the charging time. However, when the power transfer levels increase, thermal management becomes a significant challenge. The thermal design of the WPT systems needs more consideration in the design and implementation steps. This paper presents a thermal analysis of a 100 kW high-power WPT system. The thermal performance of the proposed design was evaluated at different power levels by considering the magnetic design and loss analysis. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of the proposed design was performed and the thermal images of the implemented system were taken to prove the simulation results. The results show that, a liquid cooling design is needed for a high-power WPT systems for the long-time continuous operations of the charging pads.

Bidirectional LCC-LCC -Compensated 20 kW Wireless Power Transfer System for Medium-Duty Vehicle Charging

This paper presents the design and demonstration of a bidirectional 20 kW wireless charging system (WCS) with a significantly large airgap (11 inches) and asymmetrical input-output voltage levels. Analytical and experimental sensitivity analyses of the WCS resonant tank were conducted to verify the optimal operating region under the load and frequency variation. The inverter and rectifier were designed with switching components, the charging pads were designed with double-D (DD) coils, and the tuning networks were designed with an LCC-LCC tuning circuit. The grid and vehicle side tuning circuits were designed separately to achieve a ~1:2 gain for the asymmetrical input (800 V dc ) and output (350 V dc ) voltage. The proposed WCS was designed, simulated, and tested to verify the efficiency, power transfer capacity, and sensitivity under load variation. The experimental results show that, at 20-kW output power, the achieved grid to vehicle dc-dc efficiency was 96.1%, and vehicle to grid dc-dc efficiency was 96.2%. The proposed system is the largest-airgap bidirectional WCS with the highest efficiency and power density.
