Studying electroweak few-body observables in chiral effective field theory

The use of nuclei to study electroweak probes is becoming increasingly relevant experimentally. The success of dark matter and neutrino experiments strongly depends on the ability to control nuclear effects in order to extract the fundamental parameters associated with external probes. Therefore, reliable theoretical calculations of nuclear structure and reactions, with well-controlled errors, are crucial for the success of experimental efforts. Currently, chiral effective field theory ($\chi$EFT) coupled with {\it ab-initio} methods represents one of the best approaches that fulfills these requirements. To use this approach as a tool for studying fundamental physics, it is essential to validate it against experimental data for which the calculations are well under control, such as the elastic scattering of electrons on nuclei. In this proceeding, I will present recent developments in the fitting of electromagnetic currents derived using $\chi$EFT and the calculation of electromagnetic form factors of light nuclei. The results of these calculations demonstrate the strength of the theory in describing the interaction of nuclei with electromagnetic probes over a broad range of momentum transfers and highlight the robustness of $\chi$EFT for analyzing future experimental data aimed at extracting fundamental parameters.

Direct astrophysical tests of chiral effective field theory at supranuclear densities

Recent observations of neutron stars with gravitational waves and X-ray timing provide unprecedented access to the equation of state (EoS) of cold dense matter at densities difficult to realize in terrestrial experiments. At the same time, predictions for the EoS equipped with reliable uncertainty estimates from chiral effective field theory ( x EFT) allow us to bound our theoretical ignorance. In this work, we analyze astrophysical data using a nonparametric representation of the neutron-star EoS conditioned on x EFT to directly constrain the underlying physical properties of the compact objects without introducing modeling systematics. We discuss how the data alone constrain the EoS at high densities when we condition on x EFT at low densities. Here, we also demonstrate how to exploit astrophysical data to directly test the predictions of x EFT for the EoS up to twice nuclear saturation density, in order to estimate the density at which these predictions might break down. We nd that the existence of massive pulsars, gravitational waves from GW170817, and NICER observations of PSR J0030+0451 favor x EFT predictions for the EoS up to nuclear saturation density over a more agnostic analysis by as much as a factor of 7 for the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations used in this work. While x EFT predictions using QMC are fully consistent with gravitational-wave data up to twice nuclear saturation density, NICER observations suggest that the EoS stiffens relative to these predictions at or slightly above nuclear saturation density. Additionally, for these QMC calculations, we marginalize over the uncertainty in the density at which x EFT begins to break down, constraining the radius of a 1.4M $\bigodot$ neutron star to R 1.4 = $11.40^{+1.38}_{–1.04}$ ($12.54^{+0.71}_{–0.63}$) km and the pressure at twice nuclear saturation density to p(2n sat ) = $14.2^{+18.1}_{–8.4}$ ($28.7^{+15.3}_{–15.0}$) MeV=fm 3 with massive pulsar and gravitational-wave (and NICER) data.

Calculations of the $np→dγ$ reaction in chiral effective field theory

Here, we present a calculation of the radiative capture cross section of the $np→dγ$ reaction in the low-energy range, where the M⁢1 reaction channel dominates. Employing the LENPIC nucleon-nucleon interaction up to the fifth order (N4LO) that is regularized by the semilocal coordinate space regulators, we obtain the initial and final state wave functions, and evaluate the phase shifts of the scattering state and deuteron properties. We derive the transition operator from the chiral effective field theory up to the next-to-next-to leading order (N2LO), where we also regularize the transition operator using regulators consistent with those of the interactions. We compute the capture cross sections, and the results show a converging pattern with the chiral-order expansion of the nucleon-nucleon interaction, where the regulator dependence of the results is weak when higher-order nucleon-nucleon interactions are employed. We quantify the uncertainties of the cross-section results due to the chiral-order truncation. The chirally complete and consistent cross-section results are calculated up to N2LO and they compare well with the experiments and other theoretical predictions.

Densities and momentum distributions in A ≤ 12 nuclei from chiral effective field theory interactions

Current and future electron and neutrino scattering experiments will be greatly aided by a better understanding of the role played by short-range correlations in nuclei. Two-body physics, including nucleon-nucleon correlations and two-body electroweak currents, is required to explain the body of experimental data for both static and dynamical nuclear properties. In this work, we focus on examining nucleon-nucleon correlations from a chiral effective field theory perspective and provide a comprehensive set of new variational Monte Carlo calculations of one- and two-body densities and momentum distributions based on the Norfolk many-body nuclear Hamiltonians for A ≤ 12 systems. Here, online access to detailed tables and figures is available.

Chiral effects at the metal center in Fe(III) spin crossover coordination salts

Evidence of chirality was observed at the Fe metal center in Fe(III) spin crossover coordination salts [Fe(qsal) 2 ][Ni(dmit) 2 ] and [Fe(qsal) 2 ](TCNQ) 2 from x-ray absorption (XAS) spectroscopy at the Fe 2p 3/2 core threshold. Based on the circularly polarized XAS data, the x-ray natural circular dichroism for [Fe(qsal) 2 ][Ni(dmit) 2 ] and [Fe(qsal) 2 ](TCNQ) 2 is far stronger than seen for [Fe(qsal) 2 ]Cl suggesting this natural circular dichroism signature is a ligand effect rather than a result of just a loss of octahedral symmetry on the Fe core. The larger the chiral effects in the Fe 2p core to bound XAS, the greater the perturbation of the Fe 2p 3/2 to 2p 1/2 spin–orbit splitting seen in the XAS spectra.

Chiral effects and Joule heating in hot and dense matter

Initial states of dense matter with nonzero electron chiral imbalance could potentially give rise to strong magnetic fields through chiral plasma instability. Previous work indicated that unless chiral chemical potential is as large as the electron vector chemical potential, the growth of magnetic fields due to the instability is washed out by chirality flipping rate enabled by electron mass. We reexamine this claim in a broader range of parameters and find that at higher temperatures the hierarchy is reversed supporting a growing magnetic field for an initial electron chiral chemical potential much smaller than the electron vector chemical potential. Further, we identify a qualitatively new effect relevant for magnetized hot and dense medium where chiral magnetic effect (CME) sourced by density fluctuation acts as a powerful source of Joule heating. Remarkably, even modest chiral chemical potentials (keV) in such environment can deposit energy densities set by the QCD scale in a relatively short time of the order of a few milliseconds or seconds. We speculate how this mechanism makes CME-driven Joule heating a potentially critical ingredient in the dynamics of turbulent density fluctuation of supernovae and neutron star mergers.

Muon capture on the deuteron in chiral effective field theory

Here, we consider the capture of a muon on a deuteron. An uncertainty analysis of the dominant channels is important for a careful analysis of forthcoming experimental data. We quantify the theoretical uncertainties of chiral effective-field-theory predictions of the muon-deuteron capture rate from the relevant neutron-neutron partial wave channels in the final state. We study the dependence on the cutoff used to regularize the interactions, low-energy constants calibrated using different fitting data and strategies, and truncation of the effective-field-theory expansion of the currents. Combining these approaches gives as an estimate of $Γ^{1/2}_{μd}$ = 399.1 ± 7.6 ± 4.4 s –1 for capture from the atomic doublet state, and $Γ^{3/2}_{μd}$= 12.31 ± 0.47 ± 0.04 s –1 for capture from the quartet state and the first and second uncertainties given here are due to the effective field theory truncation error and the uncertainty in the axial radius, respectively.

The Relevance of Pion-Exchange Contributions Versus Contact Terms in the Chiral Effective Field Theory Description of Nucleon–Nucleon Scattering

The standard way to demonstrate the relevance of chiral symmetry for the NN interaction is to consider higher partial waves of NN scattering which are controlled entirely by chiral pion-exchanges (since contacts vanish). However, in applications of NN-potentials to nuclear structure and reactions, the lower partial waves are the important ones, making the largest contributions. Lower partial waves are sensitive to the short-range potential, and so, when the short-range contacts were to dominate over the chiral pion contributions in lower partial waves, then the predictions from chiral potentials would have little to do with chiral symmetry. To address this issue, we investigate systematically the role of the (chiral) one- and two-pion exchanges, on the one hand, and the effect of the contacts, on the other hand, in the lower partial waves of NN scattering. We are able to clearly identify the signature of chiral symmetry in lower partial waves. Furthermore, our study has also a pedagogical spinoff as it demonstrates in detail how the reproduction of the lower partial-wave phase shifts comes about from the various ingredients of the theory.

Improved description of light nuclei through chiral effective field theory at leading order

Here, we propose an arrangement of the most commonly invoked version of the two-nucleon chiral potential such that the low-lying amplitude zero of the 1 S 0 partial wave is captured at leading order of the effective expansion. Adopting other partial waves from the LENPIC interaction, we show how this modification yields an improved description of ground-state energies and point-proton radii of the 3 H, 4 He, and 6 He nuclei.

Chiral effective field theory calculations of weak transitions in light nuclei

In this work, we report quantum Monte Carlo calculations of weak transitions in A≤10 nuclei, based on the Norfolk two- and three-nucleon chiral interactions, and associated one- and two-body axial currents. Furthermore, we find that the contribution from two-body currents is at the 2–3% level, with the exception of matrix elements entering the rates of 8Li, 8B, and 8He β decay. These matrix elements are suppressed in impulse approximation based on the (leading order) Gamow Teller transition operator alone; two-body currents provide a 20–30% correction, which is, however, insufficient to bring theory in agreement with experimental data. For the other transitions, the agreement with the data is satisfactory, and the results exhibit a negligible to mild model dependence when different combinations of Norfolk interactions are utilized to construct the nuclear wave functions. We report a complete study of two-body weak transition densities which reveals the expected universal behavior of two-body currents at short distances throughout the range of A=3 to A=10 systems considered here.

Longitudinal form Factors of A ≤ 10 Nuclei in a Chiral Effective Field Theory Approach

Here, in this work, we present the elastic electron scattering longitudinal form factors of A ≤ 10 nuclei computed in a variational Monte Carlo approach. We employ the Norfolk family of local chiral interactions and a consistent electromagnetic charge operator. Our calculations are compared both to data and past theoretical evaluations. This work represents, to our knowledge, the first accurate calculation of longitudinal form factors using manybody methods based on interacting nucleon degrees of freedom in the 7 ≤ A ≤ 10 mass range. Finally, we identify 9 Be and 10 B as candidate targets for renewed experimental interest, as they exhibit the potential to provide more stringent constraints on the theoretical models.

Nuclear-matter saturation and symmetry energy within Δ -full chiral effective field theory

Nuclear saturation and the symmetry energy are key properties of low-energy nuclear physics that depend on fine details of the nuclear interaction. The equation of state around saturation is also an important anchor for extrapolations to higher densities and studies of neutron stars. Here we develop a unified statistical framework that uses realistic nuclear forces to link the theoretical modeling of finite nuclei and infinite nuclear matter. We construct fast and accurate emulators for nuclear-matter observables and employ an iterative history-matching approach to explore and reduce the enormous parameter domain of Δ -full chiral interactions. We perform rigorous uncertainty quantification and find that model calibration including O 16 observables gives saturation predictions that are more precise than those that only use few-body data. Resonant Chiral Effects in Nonlinear Dielectric Metasurfaces

We study the resonant enhancement of linear and nonlinear chiroptical effects in planar silicon metasurfaces with an in-plane asymmetry supporting multipolar Mie resonances and quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs). We demonstrate theoretically and observe in experiment the pronounced linear circular dichroism at the quasi-BIC resonances originating from the interaction of modes with the substrate. We further find that both local field enhancement and third-harmonic signal are large for Mie resonances and some quasi-BIC modes due to the critical coupling. We demonstrate experimentally a strong nonlinear chiroptical response associated with high efficiency of the third-harmonic generation and large nonlinear circular dichroism varying from +0.918 ± 0.049 to –0.771 ± 0.004 for the samples with different asymmetries. We reveal the nonreciprocal nature of nonlinear chirality governed by the microscopic symmetry of nonlinearities and macroscopic symmetries of the meta-atom and metasurface lattice. Here, we believe our results suggest a general strategy for engineering nonlinear chiroptical response in dielectric resonant metasurfaces.
