Single Cell RNA-Seq and Machine Learning Reveal Novel Subpopulations in Low-Grade Inflammatory Monocytes With Unique Regulatory Circuits

Subclinical doses of LPS (SD-LPS) are known to cause low-grade inflammatory activation of monocytes, which could lead to inflammatory diseases including atherosclerosis and metabolic syndrome. Sodium 4-phenylbutyrate is a potential therapeutic compound which can reduce the inflammation caused by SD-LPS. To understand the gene regulatory networks of these processes, we have generated scRNA-seq data from mouse monocytes treated with these compounds and identified 11 novel cell clusters. We have developed a machine learning method to integrate scRNA-seq, ATAC-seq, and binding motifs to characterize gene regulatory networks underlying these cell clusters. Using guided regularized random forest and feature selection, our method achieved high performance and outperformed a traditional enrichment-based method in selecting candidate regulatory genes. Our method is particularly efficient in selecting a few candidate genes to explain observed expression pattern. In particular, among 531 candidate TFs, our method achieves an auROC of 0.961 with only 10 motifs. Finally, we found two novel subpopulations of monocyte cells in response to SD-LPS and we confirmed our analysis using independent flow cytometry experiments. Our results suggest that our new machine learning method can select candidate regulatory genes as potential targets for developing new therapeutics against low grade inflammation.

Description and Genome Characterization of Three Novel Fungal Strains Isolated from Mars 2020 Mission-Associated Spacecraft Assembly Facility Surfaces—Recommendations for Two New Genera and One Species

National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) spacecraft assembly facilities are monitored for the presence of any bacteria or fungi that might conceivably survive a transfer to an extraterrestrial environment. Fungi present a broad and diverse range of phenotypic and functional traits to adapt to extreme conditions, hence the detection of fungi and subsequent eradication of them are needed to prevent forward contamination for future NASA missions. During the construction and assembly for the Mars 2020 mission, three fungal strains with unique morphological and phylogenetic properties were isolated from spacecraft assembly facilities. The reconstruction of phylogenetic trees based on several gene loci (ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB, TUB, TEF1) using multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) and whole genome sequencing (WGS) analyses supported the hypothesis that these were novel species. Here we report the genus or species-level classification of these three novel strains via a polyphasic approach using phylogenetic analysis, colony and cell morphology, and comparative analysis of WGS. The strain FJI-L9-BK-P1 isolated from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Spacecraft Assembly Facility (JPL-SAF) exhibited a putative phylogenetic relationship with the strain Aaosphaeria arxii CBS175.79 but showed distinct morphology and microscopic features. Another JPL-SAF strain, FJII-L3-CM-DR1, was phylogenetically distinct from members of the family Trichomeriaceae and exhibited morphologically different features from the genera Lithohypha and Strelitziana. The strain FKI-L1-BK-DR1 isolated from the Kennedy Space Center facility was identified as a member of Dothideomycetes incertae sedis and is closely related to the family Kirschsteiniotheliaceae according to a phylogenetic analysis. The polyphasic taxonomic approach supported the recommendation for establishing two novel genera and one novel species. The names Aaosphaeria pasadenensis (FJI-L9-BK-P1 = NRRL 64424 = DSM 114621), Pasadenomyces melaninifex (FJII-L3-CM-DR1 = NRRL 64433 = DSM 114623), and Floridaphiala radiotolerans (FKI-L1-BK-DR1 = NRRL 64434 = DSM 114624) are proposed as type species. Furthermore, resistance to ultraviolet-C and presence of specific biosynthetic gene cluster(s) coding for metabolically active compounds are unique to these strains.

Exploring the Role of Neutral 4-Amino-1,2,4-triazole in the Formation of Hexanuclear f-Element Hydrolysis Products

Our recent observations of an unexpected Ce(III) hydrolysis product from the reaction of 4-amino-1,2,4-triazole (4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) with CeCl 3 ·7H 2 O, [Ce 6 (μ 3 -O) 4 (μ 3 -OH) 2 (μ 3 -Cl) 2 (Cl) 6 (μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 12 ]·7H 2 O, the first high-nuclearity lanthanide complex where all Ln atoms are connected pairwise through 12 N-donor ligands or 12 neutral bridging ligands of any type, prompted us to explore the utility of this ligand in trapping additional f-element examples. Reactions of LnCl 3 ·6H 2 O (Ln = Nd, Eu, Ho) with a large excess of 4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz (20 equiv) and with the addition of small amounts of water to help solubilize the metal salts led to the isolation of the unique hydrolysis products [Nd 6 (μ 3 -OH) 8 Cl 6 (μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 12 ][Cl 4 ]·2H 2 O, [Eu 6 (μ 6 -Cl) 0.23 (μ 3 -O 0.77 ) 4 (μ 3 -O) 2.6 (μ 3 -Cl) 0.4 Cl 6 (μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 12 ], and [Ho 6 (μ 6 -Cl) 0.21 (μ 3 -O 0.79 ) 4 (μ 3 -OH) 2 Cl 6 (μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 12 ][Cl] 3.4 . Here, we also report a Ce(III) analogue prepared in glassware contaminated with Pb(OAc) 2 , namely, [Ce 6 (μ 3 -OH) 8 (BrPbBr 5 )(μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 11.5 (OH 2 ) 6 ][Pb 0.84 Br 4.2 ][Br] 3.8 ·2(4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz)·3.6H 2 O. The Nd(III) complex is the structurally most ordered with a clear [Nd 6 (μ 3 -OH) 8 ] cluster core, while the Eu(III) and Ho(III) compounds contain partial occupancy of a μ 6 position and thus result in an incomplete Ln 6 O 9 cluster core formation. The crystallographic results suggest that the 4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz ligand brings Ln(III) ions together, followed by the formation of an Ln 6 O 8 or Ln 6 O 9 core with whatever remaining anions or ligands can be incorporated. Given the complexity of the hydrolysis products of nuclear waste, we expect to continue to find a myriad of closely related complex structures of these types for the f-elements.

Stripe antiferromagnetism and disorder in the Mott insulator NaFe 1₋ x Cu x As ( x ≲0.5)

Neutron scattering measurements have demonstrated that the heavily Cu doped NaFe 1₋ x Cu x As compound behaves like a Mott insulator exhibiting both real-space Fe-Cu stripes and antiferromagnetism below a Néel temperature for x ≲ 0.5. In this work, we have investigated the evolution of structural and magnetic ordering using 23 Na and 75 As NMR for single crystals ( x = 0.39 and 0.48), confirming antiferromagnetism in the form of magnetic stripes. We show that end-chain defects in these stripes are the principal source of magnetic disorder and are responsible for cluster spin-glass transitions in both compounds, in the latter case coexistent with antiferromagnetism. Aided by our numerical simulation of the 75 As spectra, we show that a staggered magnetization at the Fe sites is induced by nonmagnetic Cu dopants.

A Nanosized {Ni II 18 } Cluster with a ‘Flying Saucer’ Topology Exhibiting Slow Relaxation of Magnetisation Phenomena at Both 15 K and 1.3 K

A high-nuclearity {Ni 18 } complex (1) with a unique ‘flying saucer’ motif has been prepared from the organic chelate, α-methyl-2-pyridine-methanol (mpmH), in conjunction with bridging azido (N 3 - ) and peroxido (O 2 2- ) ligands. Magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed the presence of both ferro- and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between the metal centres in 1, and the stabilization of spin states with appreciable S values at two different temperature regimes. The end-on bridging azido and alkoxido groups are in all likelihood the ferromagnetic mediators, while the η 3 :η 3 :μ 6 -bridging peroxides most likely promote the antiparallel alignment of the metals’ spin vectors, yielding an overall non-zero spin ground state for the centrosymmetric compound 1. Furthermore, the {Ni 18 } nanosized cluster behaves as a single-molecule magnet, exhibiting magnetic hysteresis at low temperatures and two relaxation processes at 15 K and 1.3 K, a very rare phenomenon in polynuclear magnetic 3d-metal clusters.

Nerpa: A Tool for Discovering Biosynthetic Gene Clusters of Bacterial Nonribosomal Peptides

Microbial natural products are a major source of bioactive compounds for drug discovery. Among these molecules, nonribosomal peptides (NRPs) represent a diverse class of natural products that include antibiotics, immunosuppressants, and anticancer agents. Recent breakthroughs in natural product discovery have revealed the chemical structure of several thousand NRPs. However, biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) encoding them are known only for a few hundred compounds. Here, we developed Nerpa, a computational method for the high-throughput discovery of novel BGCs responsible for producing known NRPs. After searching 13,399 representative bacterial genomes from the RefSeq repository against 8368 known NRPs, Nerpa linked 117 BGCs to their products. We further experimentally validated the predicted BGC of ngercheumicin from Photobacterium galatheae via mass spectrometry. Nerpa supports searching new genomes against thousands of known NRP structures, and novel molecular structures against tens of thousands of bacterial genomes. The availability of these tools can enhance our understanding of NRP synthesis and the function of their biosynthetic enzymes.

Enhancing the accuracy of density functional tight binding models through ChIMES many-body interaction potentials

Semi-empirical quantum models such as Density Functional Tight Binding (DFTB) are attractive methods for obtaining quantum simulation data at longer time and length scales than possible with standard approaches. However, application of these models can require lengthy effort due to the lack of a systematic approach for their development. In this work, we discuss the use of the Chebyshev Interaction Model for Efficient Simulation (ChIMES) to create rapidly parameterized DFTB models, which exhibit strong transferability due to the inclusion of many-body interactions that might otherwise be inaccurate. We apply our modeling approach to silicon polymorphs and review previous work on titanium hydride. We also review the creation of a general purpose DFTB/ChIMES model for organic molecules and compounds that approaches hybrid functional and coupled cluster accuracy with two orders of magnitude fewer parameters than similar neural network approaches. In all cases, DFTB/ChIMES yields similar accuracy to the underlying quantum method with orders of magnitude improvement in computational cost. In conclusion, our developments provide a way to create computationally efficient and highly accurate simulations over varying extreme thermodynamic conditions, where physical and chemical properties can be difficult to interrogate directly, and there is historically a significant reliance on theoretical approaches for interpretation and validation of experimental results.

Studies on magnetocaloric effect of Tb 2 Ni 0.90 Si 2.94 compound

A comparative study has been carried out on the magnetocaloric properties of as-cast and annealed Tb 2 Ni 0.90 Si 2.94 intermetallic compound. While the as-cast material exhibits ferromagnetic cluster-glass behaviour below 9.9 K coexisting with antiferromagnetic (AFM) interaction, the annealed system shows AFM ordering below 13.5 K and spin freezing occurs below 4 K. The compound exhibits moderate magnetocaloric performance with maximum isothermal entropy changes (–ΔS M ) 8.8 and 10.9 J kg –1 K –1 , relative cooling power (RCP) 306 and 365 J kg –1 , along with adiabatic temperature change (ΔT ad ) 5.5 and 8.15 K for 70 kOe magnetic field change in as-cast and annealed forms, respectively. The estimated magnetic entropy change is found to be larger for annealed sample in comparison to that of as-cast analogue. However, the full width at half maxima (FWHM) of –ΔS M (T) behaviour is larger in as-cast compound due to the presence of inherent structural disorder which reduces with thermal annealing. A positive isothermal entropy change (–ΔS M ) and adiabatic temperature change (ΔT ad ) is observed for the as-cast compound in the measured field and temperature region. In contrast, the annealed system exhibits inverse magnetocaloric effect in the low field and temperature region where AFM interactions dominate. Magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is used as a tool to establish a subtle correlation between the observed magnetocaloric effect and the reported magnetic properties of the system.

FeS colloids – formation and mobilization pathways in natural waters

For this study, we have used synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (structure of Fe–S clusters), transmission electron microscopy (solid-phase crystallinity), Fourier-transform ion-cyclotron-resonance mass spectrometry (identity and composition of natural organic carbon compounds), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (total aqueous Fe), and the revised ferrozine method (aqueous Fe( II ) and Fe( III ) concentrations) to determine the stability and nature of colloids generated by sulfidation of ferrihydrite nanoparticles in the absence and presence of organic compounds. We observed that reductive dissolution of ferrihydrite by aqueous sulfide generates nm-scale FeS clusters. Their subsequent aggregation, which promotes settling of FeS aggregates into the solid fraction, was directly correlated with sulfide/Fe ratio. At sulfide/Fe ratios ≤0.5, FeS clusters and larger colloids remained in suspension for at least 14 days (and up to several months). At sulfide/Fe ratios >0.5, sulfidation reaction rates were rapid and FeS cluster aggregation was accelerated. Moreover, the presence of organic compounds increased the time of suspension of FeS colloids, whereas increased ionic strength inhibited the generation of FeS colloids. We present a general conceptual model to predict when and where FeS colloids can form and enhance or inhibit the mobility of contaminants and nutrients associated with them. Our study indicates that in lowsalinity fresh groundwater systems poor in sulfate (i.e. low sulfidation; lakes, floodplains, peatlands etc.), the ferrihydrite sulfidation reaction generates aqueous FeS clusters and larger colloids that remain suspended over long time periods, thus mobilizing a substantial fraction of the total aqueous Fe and S.

Ground-state degeneracy and complex magnetism of geometrically frustrated Gd 2 Ir 0.97 Si 2.97

We report a new triangular-lattice intermetallic compound Gd 2 Ir 0.97 Si 2.97 was successfully synthesized as single phase by deliberately introducing vacancies. Theoretical analysis suggests that the ground state is competing with several low-energy spin configurations due to magnetic frustration on a nearly ideal triangular lattice. Despite a number of competing magnetic states, the compound exhibits long-range antiferromagnetic order at16K, a long-range ferrimagnetic transition at 6.5 K, and a reentrant cluster-glass transition below T f ~ 3K. The complex magnetism in the compound could be correlated with competing antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic structures predicted theoretically.

Genome-based analysis for the bioactive potential of Streptomyces yeochonensis CN732, an acidophilic filamentous soil actinobacterium

Background: Acidophilic members of the genus Streptomyces can be a good source for novel secondary metabolites and degradative enzymes of biopolymers. In this study, a genome-based approach on Streptomyces yeochonensis CN732, a representative neutrotolerant acidophilic streptomycete, was employed to examine the biosynthetic as well as enzymatic potential, and also presence of any genetic tools for adaptation in acidic environment. Results: A high quality draft genome (7.8Mb) of S. yeochonensis CN732 was obtained with a G+C content of 73.53% and 6549 protein coding genes. The in silico analysis predicted presence of multiple biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs), which showed similarity with those for antimicrobial, anticancer or antiparasitic compounds. However, the low levels of similarity with known BGCs for most cases suggested novelty of the metabolites from those predicted gene clusters. The production of various novel metabolites was also confirmed from the combined high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. Through comparative genome analysis with related Streptomyces species, genes specific to strain CN732 and also those specific to neutrotolerant acidophilic species could be identified, which showed that genes for metabolism in diverse environment were enriched among acidophilic species. In addition, the presence of strain specific genes for carbohydrate active enzymes (CAZyme) along with many other singletons indicated uniqueness of the genetic makeup of strain CN732. The presence of cysteine transpeptidases (sortases) among the BGCs was also observed from this study, which implies their putative roles in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. Conclusions: This study highlights the bioactive potential of strain CN732, an acidophilic streptomycete with regard to secondary metabolite production and biodegradation potential using genomics based approach. The comparative genome analysis revealed genes specific to CN732 and also those among acidophilic species, which could give some insights into the adaptation of microbial life in acidic environment.

Experimental observation of spin glass state in the highly disordered quaternary Heusler alloy FeRuMnGa

The realization of the spin-glass (SG) state in Heusler alloys is very rare despite the presence of inherent structural and elemental disorder in those compounds. Although a few half- and full-Heusler alloys are known to exhibit the SG state, there is hardly any manifestation of the same in cases of quaternary Heusler compounds. Here we report the observation of a SG state in a highly disordered equiatomic quaternary Heusler compound: FeRuMnGa where the SG state is in between the canonical SG and the cluster glass. Different intricate features of the SG state including nonequilibrium magnetic dynamics at low temperatures in the compound are unveiled through our comprehensive magnetic, heat capacity, and neutron-diffraction studies. Further the structural disorder in the sample is neither conventional A2 - nor B2 -type whereas those two types are commonly observed for Heusler compounds. The presence of disorder also plays a significant role in electron transport properties of the alloy, which is reflected in its exhibition of semimetallic behavior and anomalous Hall effect at low temperatures.

Equatorial Electronic Structure in the Uranyl Ion: Cs 2 UO 2 Cl 4 and Cs 2 UO 2 Br 4

Electric field gradient (EFG) tensors in the equatorial plane of the linear UO 2 2+ ion have been measured by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) experiments and computed by relativistic Kohn–Sham methods with and without environment embedding for Cs 2 UO 2 Cl 4 and Cs 2 UO 2 Br 4 . This approach expands the possibilities for probing the electronic structure in uranyl complexes beyond the strongly covalent U–O bonds. The combined analyses find that one of the two largest principal EFG tensor components at the halogen sites points along the U–X bond (X = Cl, Br), and the second is parallel to the UO 2 2+ ion; in Cs 2 UO 2 Cl 4 , the components are nearly equal in magnitude, whereas in Cs 2 UO 2 Br 4 , due to short-range bromide–cesium interactions, the equatorial component is dominant for one pair of Br sites and the axial component is larger for the second pair. Additionally, the directions and relative magnitudes of the field gradient principal axes are found to be sensitive to the σ and π electron donation by the ligands and the model of the environment. Chlorine-35 NQR spectra of 235 U-depleted and 235 U-enriched Cs 2 UO 2 Cl 4 exhibited no uranium-isotope-dependent shift, but the resonance of the depleted sample displayed a 58% broader line width.

Sulfur-Ligated [2Fe-2C] Clusters as Synthetic Model Systems for Nitrogenase

Metal clusters featuring carbon and sulfur donors have coordination environments comparable to the active site of nitrogenase enzymes. Here, we report a series of di-iron clusters supported by the dianionic yldiide ligands, in which the Fe sites are bridged by two μ 2 -C atoms and four pendant S donors. The [L 2 Fe 2 ] (L = {[Ph 2 P(S)] 2 C} 2– ) cluster is isolable in two oxidation levels, all-ferrous Fe 2 II and mixed-valence Fe II Fe III . The mixed-valence cluster displays two peaks in the Mössbauer spectra, indicating slow electron transfer between the two sites. The addition of the Lewis base 4-dimethylaminopyridine to the Fe2 II cluster results in coordination with only one of the two Fe sites, even in the presence of an excess base. Conversely, the cluster reacts with 8 equiv of isocyanide t BuNC to give a monometallic complex featuring a new C–C bond between the ligand backbone and the isocyanide. The electronic structure descriptions of these complexes are further supported by X-ray absorption and resonant X-ray emission spectroscopies.

Mixed Valence {Ni 2+ Ni 1+ } Clusters as Models of Acetyl Coenzyme A Synthase Intermediates

Acetyl coenzyme A synthase (ACS) catalyzes the formation and deconstruction of the key biological metabolite, acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA). The active site of ACS features a {NiNi} cluster bridged to a [Fe4S4] n+ cubane known as the A-cluster. The mechanism by which the A-cluster functions is debated, with few model complexes able to replicate the oxidation states, coordination features, or reactivity proposed in the catalytic cycle. In this work, we isolate the first bimetallic models of two hypothesized intermediates on the paramagnetic pathway of the ACS function. The heteroligated {Ni 2+ Ni 1+ } cluster, [K(12-crown-4) 2 ][1], effectively replicates the coordination number and oxidation state of the proposed “A red ” state of the A-cluster. Addition of carbon monoxide to [1] - allows for isolation of a dinuclear {Ni 2+ Ni 1+ (CO)} complex, [K(12-crown-2) n ][2] (n = 1–2), which bears similarity to the “A NiFeC ” enzyme intermediate. Structural and electronic properties of each cluster are elucidated by X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, cyclic voltammetry, and UV/vis and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies, which are supplemented by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Calculations indicate that the pseudo-T-shaped geometry of the three-coordinate nickel in [1] – is more stable than the Y-conformation by 22 kcal mol –1 , and that binding of CO to Ni 1+ is barrierless and exergonic by 6 kcal mol –1 . UV/vis absorption spectroscopy on [2] - in conjunction with time-dependent DFT calculations indicates that the square-planar nickel site is involved in electron transfer to the CO π*-orbital. Further, we demonstrate that [2] - promotes thioester synthesis in a reaction analogous to the production of acetyl coenzyme A by ACS.

Significance of the structural configuration of B2 disorder in Co and Ti based Heusler alloys

We investigate here structural (at local and global levels) and transport properties for 𝑋 2 ⁢MnAl (𝑋= Co and Ti). Additionally, the magnetic properties were also studied for Ti 2 ⁢MnAl. Our x-ray diffraction results show that both the compounds stabilize in B2 disordered phase with cubic structure of 𝑃⁢𝑚⁢$\overline{3}$⁢𝑚 space group. Further, the structural configuration of the above disordered phase for both the compounds was identified using combined studies of x-ray absorption spectroscopy and multiple scattering calculations at the transition metal 𝐾 edges. Upon such identification, in the case of Co 2 ⁢Mn 1−𝑦⁢ Cr 𝑦 ⁢Al (𝑦= 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2) with change in 𝑦, we are able to establish a better connection quantitatively between the inverse of Mn-Co bonds and peak in the temperature-dependent resistivity. This highlights the crucial importance of a detailed understanding of the nature of B2 disorder. In the case of 𝑦=0, in the temperature range of study, the resistivity is driven by the functional form associated with (a) three-dimensional enhanced electron-electron Coulomb interaction scattering mechanism and (b) an unconventional one-magnon process. For Ti 2 ⁢MnAl, the transport shows metallic glasslike behavior at high temperature, while at low temperature it follows both the Cote-Meisel's model and quantum correction model. In this compound, the magnetic studies suggest the formation of superparamagnetic clusters in the paramagnetic matrix at low temperatures. Our density functional theory results are in line with the transport and magnetic properties. In literature, the spin polarization percentage (𝑃) for 𝑋= Co in B2 disordered phase is 76%. However, the present results emphasize the fact that in B2 disordered phase, the value of 𝑃 can range from 90% to 71% depending on the structural configuration introduced by swapping of the atomic positions of Mn and Al. For the compound under study, the value of percentage spin polarization obtained ranges between 82% to 85%. In addition, we also identify the origin of the difference in the shape of the Mn 3⁢𝑑 density of states for both the alloys. In conclusion, our results for 𝑋= Co alloy highlights the importance of identifying the specific structural configuration associated with a particular disorder category especially in the estimation of 𝑇 𝑐 and 𝑃 and for 𝑋= Ti, the physical properties can be tuned by varying the position of 𝐸 𝐹 and thereby its utilization in device applications.

Metal–Oxo Cluster Formation Using Ammonium and Sulfate to Differentiate M IV (Th, U, Ce) Chemistries

Isolating isostructural compounds of tetravalent metals M IV (Zr, Hf, Ce, Th, U, Pu, Np) improves our understanding of metal hydrolysis and coordination behavior across the periodic table. These metals form polynuclear clusters typified by the hexamer [M IV 6 O 4 (OH) 4 ] 12+ . Exploiting the ammonium M IV -sulfate (Ce IV , Th IV , and U IV ) phase space targeting rapid crystallization, we isolate the common hexamer [M IV 6 (OH) 4 (O) 4 ] 12+ but with different numbers of capping sulfates and water molecules for Ce IV , Th IV , and U IV . Furthermore, these phases allowed a direct comparison of bonding trends across the series. Upon cocrystallization with the hexamers, higher complex structures can be identified. Thorium features assemblies with monomer-linked hexamer chains. Uranium features assemblies with sulfate-bridged hexamers and the supramolecular assembly of 14 hexamers into the U 84 , [U 6 (OH) 4 (O) 4 ) 14 (SO 4 ) 120 (H 2 O) 42 ] 72– . Last, cerium showcases the isolation from monomers to the Ce 62 , [Ce 62 (OH) 30 (O) 58 (SO 4 ) 71 (H 2 O) 33.25 ] 41– . Furthermore, small-angle X-ray scattering (room temperature) shows ammonium-induced cluster assembly for Ce IV but minimal reactivity for U IV and Th IV . In this study, because the phases crystallized at elevated temperature demonstrates favorable cluster assembly, these solution phase results were surprising and suggest some other characteristics such as Ce’s facile redox behavior, contributes to its solution-phase speciation.
