Real-time Signal-to-noise Ratio (SNR) Estimation for BPSK and QPSK Modulation Using the Active Communications Channel

Method and apparatus for estimating signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gamma of a composite input signal e(t) on a phase modulated (e.g., BPSK) communications link. A first demodulator receives the composite input signal and a stable carrier signal and outputs an in-phase output signal; a second demodulator receives the composite input signal and a phase-shifted version of the carrier signal and outputs a quadrature-phase output signal; and phase error theta(sub E)(t) contained within the composite input signal e(t) is calculated from the outputs of the first and second demodulators. A time series of statistically independent phase error measurements theta(sub E)(t(sub 1)), theta (sub E)(t(sub 2)),..., theta (sub E)(t(sub k)) is obtained from the composite input signal subtending a time interval delta t = t(sub k) - t(sub 1) whose value is small enough such that gamma(t) and sigma(t) can be taken to be constant in delta t. A biased estimate gamma(sup *) for the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gamma if the composite input signal is calculated using maximum likelihood (ML) estimation techniques, and an unbiased estimate gamma(sup ^) for the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gamma of the composite input signal is determined from the biased estimate gamma(sup *), such as by use of a look-up table.

An algorithm to design a multiple-channel communications system

The authors present a novel algorithm to design a phase-modulated residual carrier communications system for optimum performance. The algorithm has been developed as an aid in the design of two telemetry data channels operating simultaneously with a turn-around ranging signal. The algorithm provides the selection of an optimum subcarrier frequency and modulation indices for minimizing the mutual interferences among the channels to achieve desired link performance margins. The set of modulation indices provided by this algorithm will also achieve an optimum power division between the carrier, the ranging and the high data rate and low data rate channels. Finally, a software program using this algorithm has been developed for use with personal computers. This program provides the computation of the optimum subcarrier frequencies and modulation indices for a standard case that is recommended by the international Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems.

RF model of the distribution system as a communication channel, phase 2. Volume 2: Task reports

Based on the established feasibility of predicting, via a model, the propagation of Power Line Frequency on radial type distribution feeders, verification studies comparing model predictions against measurements were undertaken using more complicated feeder circuits and situations. Detailed accounts of the major tasks are presented. These include: (1) verification of model; (2) extension, implementation, and verification of perturbation theory; (3) parameter sensitivity; (4) transformer modeling; and (5) compensation of power distribution systems for enhancement of power line carrier communication reliability.

Interstellar Communication Channel Based on a Biological Universal

Cellular biosynthesis starts with sugar substrates and continues energetically downhill to yield amino acid, rapid, and nucleotide products. To understand the energetics of these processes, we calculated the energy for biosynthesis from sugars of E. cali's amino acids, nucleotides, and lipids. We found that the biosynthesis of amino acids and lipids from sugar substrates proceeds by redox disproportionation. of sugar carbon with a favorable energy of about -11 kcal/mole of carbon. Overall, redox disproportion of sugar carbon accounted for 84% and 96% (ATP only 6% and 1%) of the total biosynthetic energy of amino acids and lipids (the major cellular constituents). Next, we calculated for all 48 possible 3-carbon substrates the energy of maximal disproportionation to carbon dioxide and methane. We found no other carbon substrates than matched sugars in biosynthetic energy, efficiency, and simplicity. From this, we concluded that sugars are the optimal biosynthetic substrate. Since this conclusion is based on universal properties of carbon chemistry, other carbon-based life throughout the Universe would also use optimal sugar substrates. Furthermore, this rather obvious universal role of sugars as the optimal biosubstrate would probably be common knowledge of technological civilizations throughout the Universe. Since the elemental building block of all sugars is formaldehyde, the common knowledge that sugars are the universal optimal biosubstrate could reasonably lead to the selection of a line(s) in the microwave spectrum of formaldehyde as a frequency for interstellar communication.

Capacity of a multimode direct detection optical communication channel

The capacity is derived under both peak and average signal power constraints and without a signal bandwidth constraint. A random telegraph wave type signalling scheme of Kabanov is known to achieve capacity provided enough signalling bandwidth is available. In the absence of received background noise, an optimally coded PPM system is shown to achieve capacity with greatly reduced bandwidth as compared to Kabanov signals.

Capacity of a direct detection optical communication channel

The capacity of a free space optical channel using a direct detection receiver is derived under both peak and average signal power constraints and without a signal bandwidth constraint. The addition of instantaneous noiseless feedback from the receiver to the transmitter does not increase the channel capacity. In the absence of received background noise, an optimally coded PPM system is shown to achieve capacity in the limit as signal bandwidth approaches infinity. In the case of large peak to average signal power ratios, an interleaved coding scheme with PPM modulation is shown to have a computational cutoff rate far greater than ordinary coding schemes.

RF model of the distribution system as a communication channel, phase 2. Volume 1: Summary Report

The design, implementation, and verification of a computerized model for predicting the steady-state sinusoidal response of radial (tree) configured distribution feeders was undertaken. That work demonstrated the feasibility and validity based on verification measurements made on a limited size portion of an actual live feeder. On that basis a follow-on effort concerned with (1) extending the verification based on a greater variety of situations and network size, (2) extending the model capabilities for reverse direction propagation, (3) investigating parameter sensitivities, (4) improving transformer models, and (5) investigating procedures/fixes for ameliorating propagation trouble spots was conducted. Results are summarized.

Modulation and coding for fast fading mobile satellite communication channels

The performance of Gaussian baseband filtered minimum shift keying (GMSK) using differential detection in fast Rician fading, with a novel treatment of the inherent intersymbol interference (ISI) leading to an exact solution is discussed. Trellis-coded differentially coded phase shift keying (DPSK) with a convolutional interleaver is considered. The channel is the Rician Channel with the line-of-sight component subject to a lognormal transformation.

CW Interference Effects on High Data Rate Transmission Through the ACTS Wideband Channel

Satellite communications channels are susceptible to various sources of interference. Wideband channels have a proportionally greater probability of receiving interference than narrowband channels. NASA's Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) includes a 900 MHz bandwidth hardlimiting transponder which has provided an opportunity for the study of interference effects of wideband channels. A series of interference tests using two independent ACTS ground terminals measured the effects of continuous-wave (CW) uplink interference on the bit-error rate of a 220 Mbps digitally modulated carrier. These results indicate the susceptibility of high data rate transmissions to CW interference and are compared to results obtained with a laboratory hardware-based system simulation and a computer simulation.

L-band and SHF multiple access schemes for the MSAT system

The first generation of the Canadian Mobile Satellite (MSAT) system, planned to be operational in the early 1990s, will provide voice and data services to land, aeronautical, and maritime mobile terminals within the Canadian land mass and its territorial waters. The system will be managed by a centralized Demand Assignment Multiple Access (DAMA) control system. Users will request a communication channel by communicating with the DAMA Control System (DCS) via the appropriate signalling channels. Several access techniques for both L-band and SHF signalling channels have been investigated. For the L-band, Slotted Aloha (SA) and Reservation Aloha (RA), combined with a token scheme, are discussed here. The results of Telesat studies to date indicate that SA, when combined with token scheme, provides the most efficient access and resource management tool in a mobile propagation environment. For SHF signalling channels, slim time division multiple access (TDMA) and SA have been considered as the most suitable candidate schemes. In view of the operational environment of the SHF links, provision of a very short channel access delay and a relatively high packet success rate are highly desirable. Studies carried out generally favor slim-TDMA as the most suitable approach for SHF signalling channels.

Methods and Apparatuses for Signaling with Geometric Constellations in a Raleigh Fading Channel

Communication systems are described that use signal constellations, which have unequally spaced (i.e. `geometrically` shaped) points. In many embodiments, the communication systems use specific geometric constellations that are capacity optimized at a specific SNR, over the Raleigh fading channel. In addition, ranges within which the constellation points of a capacity optimized constellation can be perturbed and are still likely to achieve a given percentage of the optimal capacity increase compared to a constellation that maximizes d.sub.min, are also described. Capacity measures that are used in the selection of the location of constellation points include, but are not limited to, parallel decode (PD) capacity and joint capacity.

Satellite personal communications system

Voice channel communication between low power mobile stations dispersed over a large area is provided by a system which includes a geostationary satellite utilizing a large UHF antenna that can receive a transmission from a caller and retransmit it over any one beam of a matrix of narrow beams, so the chosen beam covers an area in which a designated called party is located. A single up-link control channel occupying a narrow frequency band, can be utilized to receive dial up signals from a caller, and another single down link control channel can be utilized to ring up the called party located anywhere within the continental United States. The satellite antenna includes a matrix of feed horns that not only direct the beams in a controlled matrix onto the area of the continental United States, but also permit detection of the region from which the caller's signal is transmitted and the region from which the called party's answer is received, to enable the interconnection of signals received from these two regions. The system is particularly useful for rural areas.
