Coordination Polymer Electrocatalysts Enable Efficient CO‐to‐Acetate Conversion

Abstract Upgrading carbon dioxide/monoxide to multi‐carbon C 2+ products using renewable electricity offers one route to more sustainable fuel and chemical production. One of the most appealing products is acetate, the profitable electrosynthesis of which demands a catalyst with higher efficiency. Here, a coordination polymer (CP) catalyst is reported that consists of Cu(I) and benzimidazole units linked via Cu(I)‐imidazole coordination bonds, which enables selective reduction of CO to acetate with a 61% Faradaic efficiency at −0.59 volts versus the reversible hydrogen electrode at a current density of 400 mA cm −2 in flow cells. The catalyst is integrated in a cation exchange membrane‐based membrane electrode assembly that enables stable acetate electrosynthesis for 190 h, while achieving direct collection of concentrated acetate (3.3 molar) from the cathodic liquid stream, an average single‐pass utilization of 50% toward CO‐to‐acetate conversion, and an average acetate full‐cell energy efficiency of 15% at a current density of 250 mA cm −2 .

Complete separation of benzene-cyclohexene-cyclohexane mixtures via temperature-dependent molecular sieving by a flexible chain-like coordination polymer

Abstract The separation and purification of C6 cyclic hydrocarbons (benzene, cyclohexene, cyclohexane) represent a critically important but energy intensive process. Developing adsorptive separation technique to replace thermally driven distillation processes holds great promise to significantly reduce energy consumption. Here we report a flexible one-dimensional coordination polymer as an efficient adsorbent to discriminate ternary C6 cyclic hydrocarbons via an ideal molecular sieving mechanism. The compound undergoes fully reversible structural transformation associated with removal/re-coordination of water molecules and between activated and hydrocarbon-loaded forms. It exhibits distinct temperature- and adsorbate-dependent adsorption behavior which facilitates the complete separation of benzene, cyclohexene and cyclohexane from their binary and ternary mixtures, with the record-high uptake ratios for C 6 H 6 /C 6 H 12 and C 6 H 10 /C 6 H 12 in vapor phase and highest binary and ternary selectivities in liquid phase. In situ infrared spectroscopic analysis and ab initio calculations provide insight into the host-guest interactions and their effect on the preferential adsorption and structural transformation.

Sandwiched Kagomé Lattices in a Coordination Polymer Based on Mixed-Valent Uranium

The metal–organic material U V O(U VI O 2 ) 2 (OH) 5 (Triaz) 2 (Triaz = 1,2,4-triazolate) has been isolated from the reaction of UO 2 (NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O with 1,2,4-triazole in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([C 2 mim][OAc]). The compound’s crystal structure is comprised of planar inorganic layers interconnected by organic linkers into a 3D framework. These layers represent a uranium-based coordination polymer with a Kagomé topology that to the best of our knowledge has never been recognized in f-element coordination chemistry.

Insights on carbon dioxide adsorption in a flexible 1-D coordination polymer from in situ X-ray scattering and density functional theory

A combination of in situ small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) microstructure characterization over scales ranging from 1 nm to 10 µm and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) structure characterization under various gas/pressure/temperature conditions with density functional theory (DFT) calculations provides new insights for the CO2 sorption behavior of a one-dimensional porous coordination polymer: catena-bis(dibenzoylmethanato)(4,4′-bipyridyl)nickel(II), denoted NiDBM-Bpy. The NiDBM-Bpy chains are held together by van der Waals forces, but the structure of guest-free NiDBM-Bpy is unsolved due to a lack of suitable crystals and high-quality powder XRD patterns. Nevertheless, SAXS and powder XRD can follow microstructural and structural changes as a function of gas pressure, composition and temperature. Both mixed-gas flow and static supercritical CO2 regimes are explored experimentally. DFT calculations are used to model the structural variation associated with XRD changes and hysteresis in the sorption isotherms. XRD and DFT calculations suggest that an orthorhombic Fddd structure with two CO2 per Ni emerges following a transition from the structure with lower molar volume and symmetry that exists without CO2 present.

Dual‐Ion Intercalation and High Volumetric Capacitance in a Two‐Dimensional Non‐Porous Coordination Polymer

Abstract Intercalation is a promising ion‐sorption mechanism for enhancing the energy density of electrochemical capacitors (ECs) because it offers enhanced access to the electrochemical surface area. It requires a rapid transport of ions in and out of a host material, and it must occur without phase transformations. Materials that fulfil these requirements are rare; those that do intercalate almost exclusively cations. Herein, we show that Ni 3 (benzenehexathiol) (Ni 3 BHT), a non‐porous two‐dimensional (2D) layered coordination polymer (CP), intercalates both cations and anions with a variety of charges. Whereas cation intercalation is pseudocapacitive, anions intercalate in a purely capacitive fashion. The excellent EC performance of Ni 3 BHT provides a general basis for investigating similar dual‐ion intercalation mechanisms in the large family of non‐porous 2D CPs.

Solid 3D Li–S Battery Design via Stacking 2D Conductive Microporous Coordination Polymers and Amorphous Li–S Layers

To make a lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery practical, not only high gravimetric energy capacity is important, but also high volumetric energy capacity will be required. The currently explored Li-S cathode designs often deploy systems with liquid electrolyte infiltration, hence with relatively low volumetric capacity. In the current study, we theoretically test a compact solid three-dimensional (3D) design (more like a Li-ion battery cathode than a conventional Li-S cathode) consisted of a sandwich structure alternating between the two-dimensional (2D) Mn-hexaaminobenzene-based coordination polymer (2D Mn-HAB-CP) layer and the amorphous Li-S layer. We study the theoretical limits for both its gravimetric and volumetric energy capacity, as well as its structural stability and Li diffusion within the cathode system. To study the Li diffusion within an amorphous system, we also develop a pull-atom molecular dynamics (PA-MD) to calculate the barrier heights of such disordered systems. We reveal the mechanism that determines the Li diffusion in the amorphous layer of the system. Overall, we find such a 3D solid Li-S cathode can be practical, with sufficient large gravimetric and volumetric energy capacity, as well as the Li diffusion constant. It also solves many other common Li-S cathode problems, from Li polysulfide dissolution to electrical insulating, and structure instabilities.

Presynthetic Redox Gated Metal-to-Insulator Transition and Photothermoelectric Properties in Nickel Tetrathiafulvalene-Tetrathiolate Coordination Polymers

Photothermoelectric (PTE) materials are promising candidates for solar energy harvesting and photodetection applications, especially for near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. Although the processability and tunability of organic materials are highly advantageous, examples of organic PTE materials are comparatively rare and their PTE performance is typically limited by poor photothermal (PT) conversion. Here, we report the use of redox-active Sn complexes of tetrathiafulvalene-tetrathiolate (TTFtt) as transmetalating agents for the synthesis of presynthetically redox tuned NiTTFtt materials. Unlike the neutral material NiTTFtt, which exhibits n-type glassy-metallic conductivity, the reduced materials Li 1.2 Ni 0.4 [NiTTFtt] and [Li(THF) 1.5 ] 1.2 Ni 0.4 [NiTTFtt] (THF = tetrahydrofuran) display physical characteristics more consistent with p-type semiconductors. The broad spectral absorption and electrically conducting nature of these TTFtt-based materials enable highly efficient NIR-thermal conversion and good PTE performance. Furthermore, in contrast to conventional PTE composites, these NiTTFtt coordination polymers are notable as single-component PTE materials. As a result, the presynthetically tuned metal-to-insulator transition in these NiTTFtt systems directly modulates their PT and PTE properties.

Plutonium and Cerium Perrhenate/Pertechnetate Coordination Polymers and Frameworks

Spent nuclear fuel (SNF) contains transuranic and lanthanide species, which are sometimes recovered and repurposed. One particularly problematic fission product, 99 TcO 4 – , hampers this recovery via coextraction with high valence metals, perhaps by complexation during aqueous reprocessing of SNF. There is limited molecular-level knowledge concerning the coordination chemistry between TcO 4 – or its well-known surrogate ReO 4 – and transuranic/lanthanide species. In the current study, we investigated the coordination of ReO 4 – /TcO 4 – with plutonium and cerium cations by structural and chemical characterization of a series of isolated extended solids. In this study, Ce represents both trivalent lanthanides and is considered a surrogate for Pu, respectively, in its common trivalent and tetravalent oxidation states. The structural elucidation of the seven isolated crystalline solids revealed that ReO 4 – /TcO 4 – directly connects to Pu IV , Pu VI O 2 2 + , Ce III , and Ce IV in the terminal and bridging coordination modes, leading to 1-, 2-, and 3-dimensional frameworks. For example, ReO 4 – coordination to Pu(IV) formed a 1D chain or 2D framework, isostructural with previously isolated Th(IV) compounds. However, Pu VI O 2 2 + alternating with ReO 4 – led to a unique 1D chain, different from the prior-reported U(VI)/Np(VI)-ReO 4 – /TcO 4 – structures. Coordination of ReO 4 – /TcO 4 – with Ce(III) promotes the assembly of 3D frameworks. Finally, attempted synthesis of a Ce(IV)-ReO 4 – compound resulted in a 2D framework with a mixed-valence Ce III/IV . The highly acidic reaction conditions supported the reduction of both Ce IV and Tc VII , challenging isolation of compounds featuring these species. Only one TcO 4 -containing structure was obtained in this study (Ce III –TcO 4 3D framework), vs the six total Ce/Pu-ReO 4 compounds. Furthermore, our three Pu-ReO 4 crystal structures are the first reported and translated to atomic-level information about Pu-TcO 4 coordination in nuclear fuel reprocessing scenarios, in addition to broadening our knowledge of bonding trends in the early, high-valence actinides.

A fivefold UO$_2^{2+}$ node is a path to dodecagonal quasicrystal approximants in coordination polymers [plus supplemental information]

Aperiodic formations continue to focus interest in areas ranging from advanced scientific theories to practical everyday applications. Starting from diverse and tightly bonded intermetallic compounds, this world showed an important breakthrough toward the so-called soft systems of meso/macroscale: liquid crystals, thin films, polymers, proteins, etc. This work opens a route for making bulk quasicrystals (QC) in an unprecedented but very common area, with molecular ligands. Since these systems are, to a large extent, transparent, they extend the possible areas of QC application to previously unreachable corners, e.g., photonics. We combined efficient bridging ligands with uranyl pentagonal bonding centers and, unexpectedly, brought the unique attributes of f-element coordination chemistry to an interdisciplinary area of aperiodic formations. Taking advantage of the planar coordination of uranyl ions, we were able to direct the structure expansion solely in two directions with a characteristic snub square tiling, a predicted but previously unobtainable dodecagonal approximant.
