Feasibility and cost study on VOIR SAR data transfer via a bent pipe link

An INTELSAT/DOMSAT double hop bent pipe link for the Venus orbiting imaging radar synthetic aperture radar imaging data transfer from deep space stations 43 and 63 to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory was investigated. The cost for the bent pipe transfer was estimated and compared to that for the planned tape record/airfreight-the-tape transfer method.

Reduction of liquid hydrogen boiloff: Optimal reliquefaction system design and cost study

The refrigeration cycles investigated are referred to as Joule-Thomson cycles because they depend on the J-T effect to produce the low temperatures. Two basic competitive refrigeration cycles were evaluated. The first vents a portion of cold H2 gas to achieve the required precooling; the second uses LN2 for precooling. Both open loop and closed loop cycles were evaluated as well as combinations of venting to supplement the LN2 precooling. All cycles use a H2 compressor to achieve the desired high pressure (1325 psig). The heat compression was removed by cooling water. The high pressure H2 gas was cooled in counter flow heat exchangers by flowing cold H2 to the compressor. Further cooling was achieved for cycles using LN2 by passing H2 vapors through a LN2 heat exchanger. Finally, the high pressure H2 gas was expanded through a J-T valve where a portion of H2 was liquefied. The low pressure H2 gas flow back through the heat exchangers to the compressor is that portion not liquefied and makes up hydrogen gas from the dewar.

Reduction of liquid hydrogen boiloff: Optimal reliquefaction system design and cost study

A preliminary design and economic analysis of candidate hydrogen reliquefaction systems was performed. All candidate systems are of the same general type; differences and size, compressor arrangement, and amount of hydrogen venting. The potential application of the hydrogen reliquefaction will be to reduce the boil-off from the 850,000 gallon storage dewars at LC-39.

Design concepts and cost studies for magnetic suspension and balance systems

The application of superconducting magnets for suspension and balance of wind tunnel models was studied. Conceptual designs are presented for magnetic suspension and balance system (MSBS) configurations compatible with three high Reynolds number cases representing specified combinations of test conditions and model sizes. Concepts in general met initially specified performance requirements such as duty cycle, force and moment levels, model angular displacement and positioning accuracy with nominal design requirements for support subsystems. Other performance requirements, such as forced model sinusoidal oscillations, and control force magnitude and frequency, were modified so as to alleviate the magnitude of magnet, power, and cryogenic design requirements.

Space station needs, attributes and architectural options study costing working group briefing

The interface between tasks and the sequence of information flow are charted. The mission model and the requirements of each mission. These requirements along with the mission model schedule resulted in a further definition of the mission payloads, the Space Station architecture and the STS requirements was developed in task 2. The information was used to estimate the cost parameters necessary to generate cost estimates for the system with the aid of cost models for the Missions, Space Station and Space Transportation.

Space station needs attributes and architectural options study costing working group briefing

Individuals in the United States who understand the promise of materials processing in space and who also are senior technical personnel associated with commercial firms that process materials: (1) endorsed the concept of a space station as a desirable national asset; (2) stated that a commercial MPS research program is mandatory to extend commericalization of space for materials processing; and (3) described in general terms a national research laboratory and free flying facilities that are needed. Participants agreed that industry R&D is motivated largely by market pull rather than by technology push, that initial interest is low-g materials research; and that to farther, commercial market assurance (a salable product) is a must.

Low cost payload studies

Low cost payload studies aimed at the reduction of Space Shuttle cost, with the emphasis on mission support subsystem equipment, are reviewed. Spacecraft design, manufacturing and operational approaches are specified and quantified to demonstrate the feasibility of reductions of cost from present-day estimates. Space Shuttle design capabilities for retrieval, repair, and reuse of future payloads are indicated as cost reduction possibilities. It is also pointed out that an increased volume and weight carrying capability of the Space Shuttle can alter the design approach to future payloads to reduce cost. Details are given on some specific subsystem component design alterations integrated in an overall low-cost payload design. Refurbishment is discussed as the final area of interest for low cost payload design. Total program savings of up to 50% are found to be possible in the studies.

Study to establish cost projections for production of Redox chemicals

A cost study of four proposed manufacturing processes for redox chemicals for the NASA REDOX Energy Storage System yielded favorable selling prices in the range $0.99 to $1.91/kg of chromic chloride, anhydrous basis, including ferrous chloride. The prices corresponded to specific energy storage costs from under $9 to $17/kWh. A refined and expanded cost analysis of the most favored process yielded a price estimate corresponding to a storage cost of $11/kWh. The findings supported the potential economic viability of the NASA REDOX system.

Strapdown cost trend study and forecast

The potential cost advantages offered by advanced strapdown inertial technology in future commercial short-haul aircraft are summarized. The initial procurement cost and six year cost-of-ownership, which includes spares and direct maintenance cost were calculated for kinematic and inertial navigation systems such that traditional and strapdown mechanization costs could be compared. Cost results for the inertial navigation systems showed that initial costs and the cost of ownership for traditional triple redundant gimbaled inertial navigators are three times the cost of the equivalent skewed redundant strapdown inertial navigator. The net cost advantage for the strapdown kinematic system is directly attributable to the reduction in sensor count for strapdown. The strapdown kinematic system has the added advantage of providing a fail-operational inertial navigation capability for no additional cost due to the use of inertial grade sensors and attitude reference computers.

Techniques for Conducting Effective Concept Design and Design-to-Cost Trade Studies

Concept design plays a central role in project success as its product effectively locks the majority of system life cycle cost. Such extraordinary leverage presents a business case for conducting concept design in a credible fashion, particularly for first-of-a-kind systems that advance the state of the art and that have high design uncertainty. A key challenge, however, is to know when credible design convergence has been achieved in such systems. Using a space system example, this paper characterizes the level of convergence needed for concept design in the context of technical and programmatic resource margins available in preliminary design and highlights the importance of design and cost evaluation learning curves in determining credible convergence. It also provides techniques for selecting trade study cases that promote objective concept evaluation, help reveal unknowns, and expedite convergence within the trade space and conveys general practices for conducting effective concept design-to-cost studies.
