Continuous parameter tracking system for measuring human performance in compensatory control system
Principle of operation and static performance data of flueric AND gate, using wall attachment principle
Gate performance is not adversely affected by normal dimensional variations encountered in fabrication and it operates throughout full loading range. Flow from one control must be sufficiently monostable to allow initial attachment and upon switching, return to outer wall. Venting must be adequate.
Photographic film processing support is described for the CREPE 4 project, a high-altitude balloon study of cosmic radiation. The processing procedures are summarized, and recommendations are made for the size and thickness of film to be used in future projects.
It is possible to reduce crosstalk between optical signals in intersecting optical conductors by taking two steps: Minimize amount of light diffracted into wrong conductor by selecting optimum conductor width, and place light traps in each conductor. How well techniques work depends in part on quality of optical conductors (partically surface smoothness) and on how closely optical-signal mode of propagation approaches ideal. Nature of signals also important: With digital signals, less crosstalk attenuation required than for analog signals.

Applications of the spherical-triangles method for determining ground-trace intersections of multiple spacecraft are considered. The results derived from this procedure are inconsistent with the actual ephemeris data. It is found that an alternative method based on the ground track equations provides more accurate results, is more easily implemented, and is computationally less intensive.

This report describes work performed under contract NAS5-32584 for Phase 3 of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) from 1 November 1993 through 1 November 1994. We have made spectral observations of the hard x-ray and gamma-ray bremsstrahlung emissions from solar flares using the Burst and Transit Source Experiment (BASTE) on CGRO. These measurements of their spectrum and time profile provided valuable information on the fundamental flare processes of energy release, particle acceleration, and energy transport. Our scientific objective was to study both the thermal and non-thermal sources of solar flare hard x-ray and gamma-ray emission.
Research into quantum algorithms for NP-complete problems has rekindled interest in the detailed study a broad class of combinatorial problems. A recent paper applied the quantum adiabatic evolution algorithm to the Exact Cover problem for 3-sets (EC3), and provided an empirical evidence that the algorithm was polynomial. In this paper we provide a detailed study of the characteristics of the exact cover problem. We present the annealing approximation applied to EC3, which gives an over-estimate of the phase transition point. We also identify empirically the phase transition point. We also study the complexity of two classical algorithms on this problem: Davis-Putnam and Simulated Annealing. For these algorithms, EC3 is significantly easier than 3-SAT.
