The crystal structure of a new calcium aluminate phase containing formate

A new calcium aluminate phase containing formate ions was synthesized and its crystal structure determined. This new phase is indicated as M-phase and was firstly observed in Portland cement pastes hydrated in presence of Ca-formate and in excess of water. The crystal structure of the M-phase was successfully solved in the R-3 space group of the trigonal system on the basis of synchrotron X-ray single crystal diffraction data. The structural model was confirmed by Rietveld refinement of the powder diffraction data acquired on the synthesized pure sample. The crystal structure of the M-phase is similar to that of ettringite, being characterized by columns of AlO{sub 6} octahedra alternating with groups of three edge-sharing CaO{sub 7} polyhedra. The formate ions (HCOO){sup −} share two oxygens with Ca polyhedra and are located in the interspace between the columns. The crystal structure of the M-phase testifies the strong interaction occurring between small organic molecules as formate and the calcium aluminate components of Portland cement.

Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 : A Noncentrosymmetric Polar Crystal Structure with Disordered Trimers

Phase-pure polycrystalline Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 was prepared and determined to adopt the noncentrosymmetric polar crystal structure (space group Cmc2 1 ) based on results of second harmonic generation, convergent beam electron diffraction, and Rietveld refinements using powder neutron diffraction data. The crystal structure features zigzag chains of corner-shared trimers, which contain three distorted face-sharing octahedra. The three metal sites in the trimers are occupied by disordered Ru/Mn with three different ratios: Ru1:Mn1 = 0.202(8):0.798(8), Ru2:Mn2 = 0.27(1):0.73(1), and Ru3:Mn3 = 0.40(1):0.60(1), successfully lowering the symmetry and inducing the polar crystal structure from the centrosymmetric parent compounds Ba 4 T 3 O 10 (T = Mn, Ru; space group Cmca). The valence state of Ru/Mn is confirmed to be +4 according to X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy. Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 is a narrow bandgap (~0.6 eV) semiconductor exhibiting spin-glass behavior with strong magnetic frustration and antiferromagnetic interactions.

Crystal structure of ractopamine hydrochloride, C 18 H 24 NO 3 Cl

The crystal structure of ractopamine hydrochloride has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional theory techniques. Ractopamine hydrochloride crystallizes in space groupPbca(#61) witha= 38.5871(49),b= 10.7691(3),c= 8.4003(2) Å,V= 3490.75(41) Å 3 , andZ= 8. The ractopamine cation contains two chiral centers, and the sample consists of a mixture of the S,S/R,R/S,R and R,S forms. Models for the two diastereomers S,S and S,R were refined, and yielded equivalent residuals, but the S,R form is significantly lower in energy. The crystal structure consists of layers of molecules parallel to thebc-plane. In each structure one of the H atoms on the protonated N atom acts as a donor in a strong discrete N–H⋯Cl hydrogen bond. Hydroxyl groups act as donors in O–H⋯Cl and O–H⋯O hydrogen bonds. Both the classical and C–H⋯Cl and C–H⋯O hydrogen bonds differ between the forms, helping to explain the large microstrain observed for the sample. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD® for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®).

Complex Disorder in Type-I Clathrates: Synthesis and Structural Characterization of A8GaxSn46−x (A = Rb, Cs; 6.9 < x < 7.5)

Exploratory studies in the systems Rb–Ga–Sn and Cs–Ga–Sn yielded the cubic type-I clathrates with refined compositions Rb8GaxSn46−x and Cs8GaxSn46−x (6.9 < x < 7.5). Nearly single-phase materials with good crystallinity were obtained from stoichiometric reactions of the elements. The structures were characterized by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Both Rb8GaxSn46−x and Cs8GaxSn46−x represents cases, where a Group 13 element randomly substitutes a Group 14 element in the structure. The extent of Ga/Sn mixing is apparently governed by the drive of the system to achieve an optimal valence electron count, and hence, Rb8GaxSn46−x and Cs8GaxSn46−x (x ≈ 8) can be regarded as Zintl phases. This notion is supported by structure refinements on a multitude of single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, which also confirm that both types of cages in the cubic type-I structure are fully occupied by Rb and Cs atoms. The open-framework, comprised of 46 nodes per formula unit, adapts to the incorporation of nearly eight Ga atoms within the matrix of Sn, whereby small, short-range distortions result. The exact nature of these effects is still unclear, as so far, the structural variations could only be modeled as both positional and occupational disorder at one of three framework sites. Since vacancies in the structures of the binary type-I clathrates A8Sn46−x☐x (A = Rb, Cs; ☐ = missing Sn atom) are also known to cause local distortions, the latter were also synthesized with the same protocols used for the synthesis of A8GaxSn46−x and structurally re-analyzed. The results from the latter studies confirm that homogeneity issues abound, and that the final structures/compositions are an intricate function of the experimental conditions.

The crystal structure of nintedanib esylate hemihydrate was refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data and optimized using density functional theory techniques. Nintedanib esylate hemihydrate crystallizes in space groupP-1(#2) witha= 11.5137(1),b= 16.3208(4),c= 19.1780(5) Å,α= 69.0259(12),β= 84.4955(8),γ= 89.8319(6)°,V= 3347.57(3) Å 3 , andZ= 4 at 295 K. Hydrogen bonds are prominent in the crystal structure. The water molecule forms two medium-strength O–H⋯O hydrogen bonds to one of the esylate anions. The protonated nitrogen atom in each cation forms a N–H⋯O hydrogen bond to an esylate anion. The ring N–H groups form strong intramolecular N–H⋯O hydrogen bonds to carbonyl groups. The ring N–H groups form intramolecular N–H⋯O hydrogen bonds to esylate anions. Many C–H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen bonds (and one C–H⋯N hydrogen bond), with aromatic C–H, methylene groups and methyl groups as donors, are present. The hydrogen bonding patterns of the two cations differ considerably. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®)

Crystal and electronic structure of the ternary Zintl bismuthide BaLiBi

Reported is the accurate refinement of the structure of the ternary bismuthide BaLiBi, based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. This compound crystallizes with the ZrBeSi structure type with the space group P6 3 /mmc (no. 194), a=4.9917(6) Å, c=9.079(2) Å, V=195.92(7) Å 3 with two formula units per unit cell. In addition to being a colored ternary variant of the AlB 2 type, the crystal structure of BaLiBi can be also viewed as a “stuffed” variant of the NiAs structure, where the Bi atoms form a hexagonal close packing, the Ba atoms occupy the octahedral voids in this packing, and the Li atoms are located between adjacent tetrahedral voids on their common triangular faces. Furthermore, in the absence of direct Bi–Bi interactions, the BaLiBi crystal structure rationalized according to the notation (Ba 2+ )(Li + )(Bi 3− ), suggesting an electron-balanced composition, i. e., a Zintl phase. In line with this notation, scalar-relativistic first-principle calculations with the LMTO code reveal a semiconducting ground state, with a bandgap of about 0.6 eV. Fully relativistic electronic structure calculations predict a semimetallic ground state.

Proposed crystal structure of carbadox, C 11 H 10 N 4 O 4

A model for the crystal structure of carbadox has been generated and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data and optimized using density functional theory techniques. Carbadox crystallizes in space groupP2 1 (#4) witha= 13.8155(3),b= 21.4662(1),c= 16.3297(3) Å,β= 110.0931(7)°,V= 4548.10(3) Å 3 , andZ= 16. The crystal structure is characterized by approximately parallel stacking of the eight independent carbadox molecules parallel to thebc-plane. There are two different molecular configurations of the eight carbadox molecules; five are in the lower-energy configuration and three are in a ~10% higher-energy configuration. This arrangement likely achieves the lowest-energy crystalline packing via hydrogen bonding. Hydrogen bonds link the molecules both within and between the planes. Each of the amino groups forms a N–H⋯O hydrogen bond to an oxygen atom of the 1,4-dioxidoquinoxaline ring system of another molecule. The result is four pairs of hydrogen-bonded molecules, which form rings with graph setR2,2(14). Variation in specimen preparation can affect the preferred orientation of particles considerably. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®).

IrGe 4 : A Predicted Weyl-Metal with a Chiral Crystal Structure

Polycrystalline IrGe4 was synthesized by annealing elements at 800 °C for 240 h, and the composition was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. IrGe 4 adopts a chiral crystal structure (space group P3 1 21) instead of a polar crystal structure (P3 1 ), which was corroborated by the convergent-beam electron diffraction and Rietveld refinements using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data. The crystal structure features layers of IrGe 8 polyhedra along the b axis, and the layers are connected by edge- and corner-sharing. Each layer consists of corner-shared [Ir 3 Ge 20 ] trimers, which are formed by three IrGe 8 polyhedra connected by edge-sharing. Temperature-dependent resistivity indicates metallic behavior. The magnetoresistance increases with increasing applied magnetic field, and the nonsaturating magnetoresistance reaches 11.5% at 9 T and 10 K. The Hall resistivity suggests that holes are the majority carrier type, with a carrier concentration of 4.02 × 10 21 cm –3 at 300 K. In conclusion, electronic band structures calculated by density functional theory reveal a Weyl point with a chiral charge of +3 above the Fermi level.

Fleetite, Cu 2 RhIrSb 2 , a New Species of Platinum-Group Mineral from the Miass Placer Zone, Southern Urals, Russia

Fleetite, Cu 2 RhIrSb 2 , a new species of platinum-group mineral (PGM), was discovered intergrown with an Os–Ir–Ru alloy in the Miass Placer Zone (Au–PGE), southern Urals, Russia. A single grain 50 μm across was found. Osmium, ruthenium, and iridium are the main associated minerals; also present are Pt–Fe alloys, laurite, Sb-rich irarsite, Rh-rich tolovkite, kashinite, anduoite, ferronickelplatinum, heazlewoodite, PGE-bearing pentlandite and digenite, as well as micrometric inclusions of forsterite (Fo 93.7 ), chromite–magnesiochromite, and Mg-rich edenite. In reflected light, fleetite is light gray; it is opaque, isotropic, non-pleochroic, and non-bireflectant. We report reflectance values measured in air. A mean of seven point-analyses (wavelength-dispersive spectrometry) gave Cu 13.93, Ni 8.60, Fe 0.10, Ir 28.07, Rh 7.91, Ru 1.96, Sb 39.28, total 99.85 wt.%, corresponding to (Cu 1.41 Ni 0.58 Fe 0.01 ) Σ2.00 (Rh 0.49 Ni 0.36 Ru 0.12 ) Σ0.97 Ir 0.95 Sb 2.08 on the basis of six atoms per formula unit, taking into account the structural results. The calculated density is 10.83 g/cm 3 . Single-crystal X-ray studies show that fleetite is cubic, space group Fdm (#227), a = 11.6682(8) Å, V = 1588.59(19) Å 3 , and Z = 16. A least-squares refinement of X-ray powder-diffraction data gave a = 11.6575(5) Å and V = 1584.22(19) Å 3 . The strongest five reflections in the powder pattern [d in Å(I)(hkl)] are: 6.70(75)(111), 4.13(100)(220), 3.52(30)(311), 2.380(50)(422), 2.064(40)(440). Results of synchrotron micro-Laue diffraction experiments are consistent [a = 11.66(2) Å]. The crystal structure of fleetite was solved and refined to R = 0.0340 based upon 153 reflections with F o > 4σ(F o ). It is isotypic with Pd 11 Bi 2 Se 2 and best described as intermetallic, with all metal atoms in 12-fold coordination. Fleetite and other late exotic phases were formed by reaction of the associated alloy phases with a fluid phase enriched in Sb, As, and S in circulation in the cooling ophiolite source-rock. The mineral is named after Michael E. Fleet (1938–2017) in recognition of his significant contributions to the Earth Sciences.
