Orientation-Dependent Distortion of Lamellae in a Block Copolymer Electrolyte under DC Polarization

Lithium-salt-doped block copolymers have the potential to serve as solid electrolytes in rechargeable batteries with lithium metal anodes. In this work, we use small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) to study the structure of polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) doped with bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amine lithium salt (LiTFSI) during direct current (dc) polarization experiments in lithiu-lithium symmetric cells. The block copolymer studied is nearly symmetric in composition, has a total molecular weight of 39 kg mol -1 , and exhibits a lamellar morphology at all studied salt concentrations. When ionic current is passed through the electrolyte, a salt concentration gradient forms that induces a spatial gradient in the domain spacing, d. The dependence of d on distance from the positive electrode, x, was determined experimentally by scanning the incident X-ray beam from one lithium electrode to the other. By studying the two-dimensional (2D) SAXS patterns as a function of azimuthal scattering angle, we find that lamellae with PS/PEO interfaces oriented perpendicular to the flow of ionic current (LAM ⟂ ) swell and contract to a greater degree than those with interfaces oriented parallel to the current direction (LAM || ). While domains with the LAM ⟂ do not provide direct conducting pathways between the electrodes, our analysis suggests that they play an important role in establishing the salt concentration gradient necessary for sustaining a large ionic current through greater expansion and contraction.

DPE Techno-Economic Analyses

This National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) report presents the results of an extensive set of techno-economic analyses for several open-cycle coal fuel oxy-fired direct power extraction (DPE) concepts. These power cycles make use of a conducting plasma accelerated through a magnetic field to generate direct current directly without the need for moving parts. Similar to gas turbines, the efficiency of the power cycle increases with increasing working fluid temperature and typically, plasma temperatures are much higher than the inlet temperature of even the most advanced gas turbine available today, affording the opportunity for very high cycle efficiencies. Most of the study uses high-fidelity models to assess a coal-fueled oxy-combustion DPE system with an AUSC steam bottoming cycle. Two baseline configurations were explored, one with relatively conservative operating point parameters and another with relatively aggressive operating point parameters. Additional analysis on the high-fidelity models as well as reduced order models were performed to analyze the cost and performance potential more thoroughly for the baseline systems and to compare their performance to two alternate open-cycle DPE systems.

Generation of electric-field stabilized zirconium monoxide secondary phase within cubic zirconia

Flash sintering of cubic yttria-stabilized zirconia has been studied via in situ energy dispersive diffraction. A secondary rocksalt-phase zirconium monoxide was observed emerging from the primary fluorite-phase zirconium dioxide, previously only observed as a thin interlayer at metal-oxide interfaces, upon application of a direct current electric field. The average secondary phase intensity rose over extended flow of direct current through the ceramic, faded upon removal of the field and disappeared entirely upon application of an alternating current electric field. The results indicate that the sustained application of a direct current electric field can result in significant electrochemical reduction of zirconia under high current density conditions. Poor sinterability and cracking under direct current is apparent and potential mechanisms discussed therein.

Machine Learning-Assisted Stability Boundary Determination of Multiport Autonomous Reconfigurable Solar Power Plants

The multiport autonomous reconfigurable solar (MARS) power plant is a promising solution to integrate renewable resources and energy storage systems into the alternating current (ac) power grid and an high-voltage direct current (HVdc) link. In the MARS system, various input power sources are connected to the individual submodules (SMs) through direct current (dc)–dc converters. However, the presence of external power sources can result in unbalanced capacitor voltages of SMs, thereby violating stability constraints under multiple/diverse operating conditions. This article aims to address the gap by accurately determining the stability boundary of the MARS system. As such, a novel machine learning (ML)-assisted energy balancing control (EBC) criterion is proposed. Further, in conjunction with a refined EBC, this approach ensures balanced capacitor voltages across various types of SMs, significantly enhancing the overall system efficiency. The proposed EBC criterion effectively controls EBC activation and deactivation, achieving remarkable accuracy. Both power systems computer aided design (PSCAD)/electromagnetic transients including direct current (EMTDC) simulations and control hardware-in-the-loop (cHIL) tests are conducted to validate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed method. By combining the EBC and ML-assisted EBC criterion, efficient energy management is achieved for systems featuring multiple input power sources, such as MARS. This approach enables the system to fully exploit its potential across an expanded operational range while upholding high-efficiency standards.

Electric current–assisted direct joining of silicon carbide

Conventional direct joining technologies are difficult to use with silicon carbide (SiC) materials, especially for fiber composite forms of SiC, because of the harsh conditions required. Therefore, to reduce the temperature and/or process time required for the direct joining process, an electric current–assisted joining (ECAJ) method was studied. Joining of low–resistivity grade, nitrogen doped β-SiC was demonstrated at a relatively low nominal temperature of 1750 °C with a 10 min hold by enhancing the passage of current through the material. The joining mechanism is discussed in terms of localized overheating and accelerated self-diffusion at the interface. In the case of joining at 2160 °C for 1 min, rapid crystal growth of textured SiC was found at the interface. This study indicates that rapid ECAJ-based direct joining is a practical and appropriate method for joining SiC-based materials.

An Innovative Circuit Breaker for Renewable Power Grids

A key step towards a carbon-neutral future could be reached through dispersed power grids, featuring networks of local-scale renewable energy and battery storage plants. To prevent these power grids from damaging themselves and their surroundings when electrical faults arise, they must be integrated with ‘circuit breakers’, which temporarily interrupt the current flowing through them. However, currently available circuit breakers cannot handle the medium-voltage direct currents best suited for these grids. Through an innovative new circuit breaker design, Steve Schmalz and his colleagues at Eaton Corporation, the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), Virginia Tech and the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), hope that this challenge will soon be overcome.

Three-Dimensional Dynamics of a Magnetic Hopfion Driven by Spin Transfer Torque

Magnetic hopfion is a three-dimensional (3D) topological soliton with novel spin structure that would enable exotic dynamics. Herein, we observe and research the current-driven 3D dynamics of a magnetic hopfion with a unit Hopf index in a frustrated magnet. Attributed to the spin Berry phase and symmetry of the hopfion, the phase space entangles multiple collective coordinates, thus the hopfion exhibits rich dynamics including longitudinal motion along the current direction, transverse motion perpendicular to the current direction, rotational motion, and dilation. Furthermore, the characteristics of hopfion dynamics is determined by the ratio between the nonadiabatic spin transfer torque parameter and the damping parameter. Such peculiar 3D dynamics of magnetic hopfion could shed light on understanding the universal physics of hopfions in different systems and boost the prosperous development of 3D spintronics.

Extended State Observer-Based Robust Model Predictive Velocity Control for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor

This article proposes an extended state observer based robust model predictive velocity control to decrease system prediction error under parameter uncertainties for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). We develop a new PMSM model that consists of velocity and acceleration to lump the system information and an external disturbance into a disturbance. The extended state observer (ESO) is designed to estimate the velocity, acceleration, and disturbance. By estimating the state variables and disturbance using the ESO, the model predictive control (MPC) finds the optimal control input by predicting future system behavior. Additionally, the direct current controller is designed so that the direct current converges to zero. Because the proposed method is not designed based on the cascade structure from the viewpoint of velocity control, the optimization control for the velocity and currents can be defined. Thus, the proposed method is robust against external disturbances and parameter uncertainties owing to feedback linearization, state feedback, and ESO-based MPC using the acceleration PMSM model. The proposed control algorithm was experimentally verified and it showed improved velocity tracking performance compared with ESO-based MPC using the conventional PMSM model.

Instant Startup and Grid Synchronization of Inverter Based Resources

This paper introduces an innovative approach for instant startup of inverter-based resources (IBRs), which attains synchronization with the grid via the already embedded direct current feedback control. The startup process utilizes direct current control throughout each switching cycle, enabling a process that is free from inrush current. Uniquely, this method determines the grid phase angle by evaluating the current differences across switching cycles, a significant difference from traditional methods that often rely on grid or points of common coupling (PCC) voltage. An analytical model has been constructed, highlighting that the grid phase angle can be obtained in just two switching cycles. The paper details the principle of instant grid synchronization and presents both simulation and experimental results to substantiate the proposed method.

SOMAFOAM: An OpenFOAM based solver for continuum simulations of low-temperature plasmas

Here, we report the development of SOMAFOAM, a finite volume framework for performing continuum simulations of low-temperature plasmas. The primary goal of this work is to discuss the features of SOMAFOAM along with representative results provided as examples for a range of operating conditions and geometries. This includes plasma and plasma–dielectric systems operating in direct current, radio frequency, and microwave regimes from pressures as low as 100 mTorr to atmospheric pressure. The code has several useful features including the ability to run massively parallel simulations using arbitrary geometries, structured/unstructured meshes, choice of models such as drift–diffusion/full-momentum at runtime, and species-dependent timesteps to name a few. The verification/validation studies presented include comparison with previously published continuum simulations (low-pressure direct current and radio frequency plasma), with experiments (Gaseous Electronics Conference Reference Cell and microwave microplasma ignited in a split ring resonator), and previously published kinetic simulations (low-pressure radio frequency plasma). Other examples provided include a direct current atmospheric pressure microplasma bounded by dielectric sidewalls and a helium–nitrogen plasma ignited using a needle electrode facing a dielectric. The performance of the code is also discussed with serial and distributed memory parallel runs demonstrated up to 512 cores. The design and implementation of the code in a modular object-oriented framework allows for easy extension and seamless coupling with other codes and can be expected to play an important role in both academia and industry.

Janus Monolayers for Ultrafast and Directional Charge Transfer in Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Heterostructures

Charge transfer properties of van der Waals heterostructures formed by Janus and regular transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers are studied by time-resolved pump–probe measurements and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Measurements of electron and hole transfer in three heterostructures with atomic layer sequences of S–W–Se/S–W–S, Se–W–S/S–W–S, and S–W–Se/Se–W–Se reveal that charge transfer from regular to Janus monolayers is ultrafast regardless of the direction of the built-in electric field of the Janus monolayer (Janus field). However, the charge transfer from Janus to regular layers is directional and controlled by the Janus field. When the current direction is along the field, the charge transfer is ultrafast and efficient, while the field blocks the charge transfer with an opposite charge current direction. The transferred carriers form interlayer excitons with extended lifetimes compared to the intralayer excitons. The demonstrated ultrafast and directional charge transfer between Janus and regular TMD layers shows that the Janus structures can be used to make 2D heterostructures with efficient and directional charge transfer properties.

Multiterminal High-Voltage dc Systems with Series-Parallel Valve Group-Based High-Voltage dc Substations

To transfer large amount of power over long distances, multiterminal direct current (MTdc) system based on bipole high-voltage direct current (HVdc) technology is a viable option. However, such system results in large dc transmission loss. The same can be reduced by increasing the dc voltage level. This paper introduces a new MTdc system architecture comprising of series (for increasing dc voltage level) and parallel (for increasing dc current capability) connected HVdc converters. The new architecture is compared with the bipole MTdc architecture in terms of equipment needed and dc transmission loss. The control modifications needed for the MTdc system are identified and the performance of the developed control is verified through electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations.
