CACO Site - ANL Scanning Doppler Lidar / Processed Data

This dataset contains processed, standardized data from the ANL scanning Doppler lidar, consisting of range- and time-resolved measurements of radial velocity, attenuated backscatter, intensity, and spectral width. We note that the beam azimuth angles are NOT referenced to true north.

Respiration Signal Pattern Analysis for Doppler Radar Sensor with Passive Node and Its Application in Occupancy Sensing of a Stationary Subject

Doppler radar node occupancy sensors are promising for applications in smart buildings due to their simple circuits and price advantage compared to quadrature radar sensors. However, single-channel sensitivity limitations may result in low sensitivity and misinterpreted motion rates if the detected subject is at or close to “null” points. We designed and tested a novel method to eliminate such limits, demonstrating that passive nodes can be used to detect a sedentary person regardless of position. This method is based on characteristics of chest motion due to respiration, found via both simulations and experiments based on a sinusoidal model and a more realistic model of cardiorespiratory motion. In addition, respiratory rate variability is considered to distinguish a true human presence from a mechanical target. Sensor node data were collected simultaneously with an infrared camera system, which provided a respiration signal reference, to test the algorithm with 19 human subjects and a mechanical target. The results indicate that a human presence was detected with 100% accuracy and successfully differentiated from a mechanical target in a controlled environment. The developed method can greatly improve the occupancy detection accuracy of single-channel radar-based occupancy sensors and facilitate their adoption in smart building applications.

AWAKEN-ABLWF22 CLAMPS1 Doppler Lidar Vertical Velocity Profiles

These files contain 24 hour periods of data collected from the CLAMPS1 Halo Streamline Doppler lidar. While not conducting other scans, the lidar directs the beam to zenith, allowing for the measurement of vertical velocity. These data were collected during the American Wake Experiment (AWAKEN) project. The CLAMPS1 facility was deployed at the Rolling Meadows Golf Course east of Enid, OK.

Behavior and mechanisms of Doppler wind lidar error in complex terrain: stable flow case study at Perdigão

A numerical experiment is carried out investigating the magnitude of biases in ground-based lidar measurements in complex flow conditions. Biases assessed include those arising from flow curvature and from the interaction of turbulence with the wind field reconstruction (WFR) algorithms used by a WindCube lidars and anemometers. RANS-CFD and WRF-LES simulations were performed for the Perdig˜ao Field Experiment site for a range of atmospheric conditions. Virtual anemometer and lidar data were generated for four locations: two near exposed ridge tops and two in low-speed regions in the valley. The LES data at these four locations show that the scalar inflation terms (the relation between scalar and vector averaged wind speed) for virtual lidar and virtual cups agree very well with predictions using perturbation theory. While the lidar errors vary greatly with location and height, the contribution from the flow curvature tends to be larger than the differences arising from scalar inflation. For one lidar/mast pair near the ridge top, comparisons between simulations and measurements are carried out for a resonant mountain wave event on June 14th, 2017, and for the whole duration of the Perdigão campaign for winds perpendicular to the ridges. The lidar error during the mountain wave, a period of strong stability and low inversion height, is significantly larger than the campaign average. The sensitivity of the lidar error to atmospheric stability is confirmed by the RANS simulations, which suggests strong sensitivity of flow curvature error to stability conditions and to the shape of the wind speed profile near the top of the boundary layer.
