Nonstatistical Behavior of the Photoionization of Spin-Orbit Doublets

The photoionization branching ratios of spin-orbit doublets are studied both experimentally and theoretically at energies several keV above threshold. The results show significant relativistic effects for Ar 2p in the autoionizing region below the 1s threshold, and large many-body effects for Xe 3d and 4d in the vicinity of the L-shell thresholds. The branching ratios in Xe are also found to vary significantly over very broad multi-keV energy regions both above and below the inner-shell thresholds. In addition, the Ar 2p study confirms experimentally the decades-old theoretical prediction that the nonresonant branching ratio does not approach the statistical (nonrelativistic) value, and, in fact, progressively diverges from statistical with increasing photon energy.

Photoionization branching ratios of spin-orbit doublets far above thresholds: Interchannel and relativistic effects in the noble gases

Photoionization branching ratios of all of the spin-orbit doublets in the noble gas atoms Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe have been investigated theoretically at energies well above the thresholds. The results confirm in all cases that the general behavior of the branching ratios is to decrease monotonically below their statistical value with increasing photon energy. Here, this effect gets more pronounced with increasing Z. In addition, the branching ratios can be strongly affected by interchannel coupling with inner shell photoionization channels. Although these effects are strongest in the neighborhood of the inner shell thresholds, they can persist over a broad range of energies,

Evolution of non-Kramers doublets in magnetic field in PrNi 2 Cd 20 and PrPd 2 Cd 20

Praseodymium-based 1-2-20 cage compounds PrT 2 X 20 (T is generally Ti, V, Nb, Ru, Rh, Ir; and X is either Al, Zn, or Cd) provide yet another platform to study nontrivial electronic states of matter ranging from topological and magnetic orders to unconventional multipolar orders and superconductivity. In this paper, we report measurements of the electronic heat capacity in two Pr-based 1-2-20 materials: PrNi 2 Cd 20 and PrPd 2 Cd 20 . We find that the lowest-energy multiplet of the Pr 4f 2 valence configuration is a Γ 3 non-Kramers doublet and the first excited triplet is assumed to be a magnetic Γ 5 . By analyzing the dependence of the energy splitting between the ground and first excited singlet states on an external magnetic field, we found that the maximum in the heat capacity corresponding to the Schottky anomaly in PrPd 2 Cd 20 , unlike PrNi 2 Cd 20 , shows a pronounced linear dependence on an external magnetic field at higher field values. In conclusion, this effect is associated with the exchange interactions between the field-induced magnetic dipole moments.

Singlet-doublet dark matter revisited

The singlet-doublet model is an economical model of weakly interacting dark matter. We revisit it in light of improved dark matter direct detection limits. We characterize the now well-defined regions of remaining parameter space with suppressed direct detection cross sections and discuss features of the spectrum accessible at the Large Hadron Collider. We discuss when and how parameters in these special regions might be realized as the result of renormalization group evolution when starting with generic ultraviolet initial conditions.

Search for Neutrino Doublets and Triplets Using 11.4 yr of IceCube Data

We report a search for high-energy astrophysical neutrino multiplets, detections of multiple neutrino clusters in the same direction within 30 days, based on an analysis of 11.4 yr of IceCube data. A new search method optimized for transient neutrino emission with a monthly timescale is employed, providing a higher sensitivity to neutrino fluxes. This result is sensitive to neutrino transient emission, reaching per-flavor flux of approximately 10 -10 erg cm -2 s -1 from the Northern Sky in the energy range E ≳ 50 TeV. The number of doublets and triplets identified in this search is compatible with the atmospheric background hypothesis, which leads us to set limits on the nature of neutrino transient sources with emission timescales of one month.

Upper Bound on Parity Breaking Scale for Doublet WIMP Dark Matter

We consider weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter in a Parity solution to the strong CP problem. The WIMP phenomenology can be drastically affected by the presence of Parity partners of the WIMP and electroweak gauge bosons. We focus on a Parity extension of $SU(2)_L$-doublet fermion dark matter, identify the viable parameter space, and derive the predictions of the theory. We find that the Parity symmetry breaking scale is bounded from above, with the bound given by $25-60$ TeV, depending on whether or not dark matter and its Parity partner coannihilate with each other. The High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider, future colliders, and direct and indirect detection experiments can probe the parameter space further, with correlated signal rates.

Liquid-phase mixing of bipropellant doublets

Experimental results of unlike doublet mixing are correlated with an analytically derived equation predicting fluid cavitation. The correlation relates the minimum orifice pressure drop required to initiate cavitation, with the system back pressure, cold flow simulant vapor pressure, and the orifice flow discharge and contraction coefficients. Stream flow instabilities are also visually correlated with the onset of cavitation and orifice discharge coefficient measurements. The influence of cavitation on the characteristic phenomenon of hydraulic flip is observed for both circular and noncircular shaped orifices. For certain intermediate orifice lengths, some noncircular shapes are shown to produce more fully developed flows (shorter recovery lengths) and therefore a more cohesive jet, which in turn yields slightly higher cold flow mixing uniformities than circular shaped orifices of equal absolute length. The particular noncircular shaped elements evaluated are shown to be more sensitive to liquid stream misimpingement than the corresponding circular orifices.

Space Storable Propellant Performance Gas/Liquid Like-Doublet Injector Characterization

A 30-month applied research program was conducted, encompassing an analytical, design, and experimental effort to relate injector design parameters to simultaneous attainment of high performance and component (injector/thrust chamber) compatibility for gas/liquid space-storable propellants. The gas/liquid propellant combination selected for study was FLOX (82.6% F2)/ambient temperature gaseous methane. The injector pattern characterized was the like-(self)-impinging doublet. Program effort was apportioned into four basic technical tasks: injector and thrust chamber design, injector and thrust chamber fabrication, performance evaluation testing, and data evaluation and reporting. Analytical parametric combustion analyses and cold flow distribution and atomization experiments were conducted with injector segment models to support design of injector/thrust chamber combinations for hot fire evaluation. Hot fire tests were conducted to: (1) optimize performance of the injector core elements, and (2) provide design criteria for the outer zone elements so that injector/thrust chamber compatibility could be achieved with only minimal performance losses.

The doublet-ratio method and interstellar abundances.

The method of doublet ratios, used in obtaining interstellar Na I and Ca II abundances, is generalized to include realistic multiple-cloud cases. Entirely apart from any errors of observation, the simplified velocity distribution used in the method leads to errors in the inferred column densities which are systematic and which can be as large as a factor of ten or more in some practical cases. The D lines of Na I toward zeta Oph illustrate such order-of-magnitude underestimates.

Delta wing flutter based on doublet lattice method in NASTRAN

The subsonic doublet-lattice method (DLM) aeroelastic analysis in NASTRAN was successfully applied to produce subsonic flutter boundary data in parameter space for a large delta wing configuration. Computed flow velocity and flutter frequency values as functions of air density ratio, flow Mach number, and reduced frequency are tabulated. The relevance and the meaning of the calculated results are discussed. Several input-deck problems encountered and overcome are cited with the hope that they may be helpful to NASTRAN Rigid Format 45 users.
