Production of synthesis gas from natural gas with copper—iron—manganese oxide oxygen carriers/catalysts via partial oxidation and dry reforming processes
Materials, methods of making, and methods of providing a trimetallic oxygen carrier for converting methane containing fuel to synthesis gas. The trimetallic oxygen carrier comprises CuxFeyMnzOt, where CuxFeyMnzOt is a chemical composition with 0 < x ≤ 3 and 0 < y ≤ 3 and 0 < z ≤ 3 and, 0 < t ≤ 5. For example, CuxFeyMnzOt may be one of CuMnFeO 4 , CuFe 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 , CuFeMn 2 O 4 , CuFe 2 MnO 4 , or Cu impregnated on FerMnsOu, Fe impregnated on CurMnsOu, Mn impregnated on CurFesOu where r > 0, s > 0 and u > 0 and combinations thereof. Reaction of trimetallic CuxFeyMnzOt with methane generates a product stream comprising at least 50 vol. % CO and H 2 .

Metal ferrite oxygen carriers for conversion of CO2 to CO and fuel to syngas or CO
The invention provides a use of metal ferrite oxygen carrier for converting carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide or synthesis gas via three processes: catalytic dry reforming of methane, chemical looping dry reforming of fuel and promoting coal gasification with CO2. The metal ferrite oxygen carrier comprises MzFexOy, where MzFexOy is a chemical composition with 0 0 and 0<y≤6 and M is one of Ca, Ba, and/or combinations thereof. For example, MzFexOy may be one of CaFe2O4, BaFe2O4, MgFe2O4, SrFe2O4 and/or combinations thereof. In catalytic dry reforming, methane and carbon dioxide react in the presence of metal ferrites generating a product stream comprising at least 50 vol. % CO and H2. In another embodiment, chemical looping dry reforming process where metal ferrite is reduced with a fuel and then oxidized with carbon dioxide is used for production of CO from carbon dioxide. In another embodiment, the metal ferrite is used as a promoter to produce CO continuously from coal gasification with CO2.
Dynamic Tracking of NiFe Smart Catalysts using In Situ X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy for the Dry Methane Reforming Reaction
The exsolution of nanoparticles from perovskite precursors has been explored as a route to synthesize catalysts with sinter or coke resistance. The characteristics of these exsolved nanoparticles are highly dynamic depending on the redox nature of the environment to which they are subjected. To develop their properties for thermo- and electrocatalytic applications, it is necessary to track the states and behavior of exsolved catalysts with in situ and ex situ characterization. In this study, we conduct in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) along with ex situ scanning transmission electron microscopy high-angle annular dark-field (STEM-HAADF) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis of the parent perovskite oxide precursor, LaFe 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 3 , as its structure forms bimetallic NiFe nanoparticles and evolves in oxidative, reductive, and dry methane reforming environments. We develop a theory that NiFe exsolution is a function of the reduction potential where LaFe 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 3 transforms to NiFe alloy supported on LaO x -LaFeO x . The Ni starts to exsolve at 268 °C, while most Fe exsolves at 700 °C. During dry methane reforming conditions, most of the Fe is oxidized by CO 2 during the reaction and re-enters the perovskite as LaFeO 3 , while Ni remains on the surface as nanoparticles in the metallic state. During the oxidative regeneration phase, most of the Fe re-enters the bulk perovskite phase, while Ni is partially regenerated with a small percentage oxidized to large NiO nanoparticles. Finally, this study sheds light on the exsolution and regeneration of bimetallic alloy nanoparticles and the influence of the reaction conditions on their catalyst performance.
