Sierra/SD - Theory Manual - 5.8

Sierra/SD provides a massively parallel implementation of structural dynamics finite element analysis, required for high fidelity, validated models used in modal, vibration, static and shock analysis of structural systems. This manual describes the theory behind many of the constructs in Sierra/SD. For a more detailed description of how to use Sierra/SD, we refer the reader to User's Manual. Many of the constructs in Sierra/SD are pulled directly from published material. Where possible, these materials are referenced herein. However, certain functions in Sierra/SD are specific to our implementation. We try to be far more complete in those areas. The theory manual was developed from several sources including general notes, a programmer_notes manual, the user's notes and of course the material in the open literature. Unusual dynamics of tetrahedral liquids caused by the competition between dynamic heterogeneity and structural heterogeneity

Tetrahedral liquids exhibit intriguing thermodynamic and transport properties because of the various ways tetrahedra can be packed and connected. Recently, an unusual temperature dependence of the stretching exponent β in a model tetrahedral liquid ZnCl 2 from T m + 85 K to T m + 35 K has been reported using neutron-spin echo spectroscopy. This discovery stands in sharp contrast to other glass-forming liquids. In this study, we conducted neural network force field driven molecular dynamic simulations of ZnCl 2 . We found a non-monotonic temperature dependence of β from liquid to supercooled liquid temperatures. Further structural decomposition and dynamic analysis suggest that this unusual dynamic behavior is a result of the competition between the decrease in the diversity of tetrahedra motifs (structural heterogeneity) and the increase in glassy dynamic heterogeneity. Furthermore, this result may contribute to new understandings of the structural relaxation of other network liquids.

Modal dynamics and flutter analysis of floating offshore vertical axis wind turbines

Floating platforms provide vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) significant advantages over offshore horizontal axis wind turbines, which has led to increased research interest in offshore VAWT technology. Here, this paper examines dynamic stability of floating VAWTs and presents structural dynamic and aero-elastic flutter analysis of utility-scale 5 MW floating VAWTs by coupling a rotor finite element model with a linearized model for the floating system. The coupled floating VAWT model is utilized to study the effects of tower height, number of blades, blade tapering scheme, and impacts of the floating platform on modal properties and flutter. The study provides important new results and guidance to floating VAWT designers: (1) tower height increase leads to lower tower frequencies more prone to resonance, (2) by moving from land-based foundations to a floating TLP foundation, tower-mode frequency is increased significantly (by 49%–68%) which mitigates resonance and increases the flutter RPM (154% increase), (3) increasing the number of blades reduces the tower mode frequencies for both land-based and floating configuration, and (4) blade chord tapering can have a significant impact on increasing the tower mode flutter RPM. Further, analysis of low-frequency rigid body modes shows a safe, higher flutter RPM relative to the operating RPM.

CU-BENs: A structural modeling finite element library

The present work discusses capabilities within the finite element library CU-BENs. CU-BENs focuses on applying the finite element method to structural mechanics problems encountered within the context of inverse problems and partitioned fluid–structure interaction; thus element formulations are primarily of a structural type — truss, frame, and triangular discrete Kirchhoff theory shells. CU-BENs defaults to the skyline sparse storage scheme for the system matrix, but also supports other storage schemes when using external libraries such as LAPACK and UMFPACK. CU-BENs includes built-in nonlinear solution strategies, such as the Newton Raphson method and modified spherical arc length method, that are available within static analyses as well within the context of transient dynamic analyses involving a generalized-α implementation of the Newmark implicit time integration scheme.

Light-induced protein structural dynamics in bacteriophytochrome revealed by time-resolved x-ray solution scattering

Bacteriophytochromes (BphPs) are photoreceptors that regulate a wide range of biological mechanisms via red light–absorbing (Pr)–to–far-red light–absorbing (Pfr) reversible photoconversion. The structural dynamics underlying Pfr-to-Pr photoconversion in a liquid solution phase are not well understood. We used time-resolved x-ray solution scattering (TRXSS) to capture light-induced structural transitions in the bathy BphP photosensory module of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Kinetic analysis of the TRXSS data identifies three distinct structural species, which are attributed to lumi-F, meta-F, and Pr, connected by time constants of 95 μs and 21 ms. Structural analysis based on molecular dynamics simulations shows that the light activation of PaBphP accompanies quaternary structural rearrangements from an “II”-framed close form of the Pfr state to an “O”-framed open form of the Pr state in terms of the helical backbones. This study provides mechanistic insights into how modular signaling proteins such as BphPs transmit structural signals over long distances and regulate their downstream biological responses.

Resolving Configurational Disorder for Impurities in a Low-Entropy Phase

Hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) exerts a strong control over the transport of minor but critical metals in the environment and is used in multiple industrial applications; the photocatalysis community has explored the properties of hematite nanoparticles over a wide range of transition metal dopants. Nonetheless, simplistic assumptions are used to rationalize the local coordination environment of impurities in hematite. Here, we use ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD)-guided structural analysis to model the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of Cu 2+ - and Zn 2+ -doped hematite nanoparticles. Specific defect–impurity associations were identified, and the local coordination environments of Cu and Zn both displayed considerable configurational disorder that, in aggregate, approached Jahn–Teller-like distortion for Cu but, in contrast, maintained hematite-like symmetry for Zn. This study highlights the role of defects in accommodating impurities in a nominally low-entropy phase and the limits to traditional shell-by-shell fitting of EXAFS for dopants/impurities in unprecedented bonding environments.

Iodine capture with mechanically robust heat-treated Ag-Al-Si-O xerogel sorbents

Silver-loaded heat-treated aluminosilicate xerogels (Ag-HTX) were evaluated as sorbents for iodine [I2(g)] capture. The heat treatment step was performed to help increase the mechanical integrity of the gels. The synthesized xerogels were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, gravimetric iodine loading, nanoindentation, and dynamic mechanical analysis. The structural and chemical analyses of Ag-HTX showed uniform distribution of Ag throughout the gel network after Ag-exchange. After I2(g) capture, the AgI crystallites were observed in the sorbent verifying chemisorption as the iodine capture mechanism. Iodine loading of this xerogel was 0.43 g g-1 at 150°C over 1 d and 0.52 g g-1 at 22°C over 33 d. The specific surface area of Ag-HTX was 202 m2 g-1 and decreased to 87 m2 g-1 after iodine loading. The hardness of the heat-treated xerogel was 160 times higher than heat-treated aerogel of the same composition. The heat-treatment process increased the modulus value to 40.77 MPa from 6.99 MPa of as-made xerogel, demonstrating the need for this added step in the synthesis process. These results show that Ag-HTX is a promising sorbent for I2(g) capture with good loading capacity and mechanical stability.

Discovery and characterization of two Neptune-mass planets orbiting HD 212729 with TESS

ABSTRACT We report the discovery of two exoplanets orbiting around HD 212729 (TOI 1052, TIC 317060587), a Teff = 6146 K star with V = 9.51 observed by TESS in Sectors 1 and 13. One exoplanet, TOI-1052b, is Neptune-mass and transits the star, and an additional planet TOI-1052c is observed in radial velocities but not seen to transit. We confirm the planetary nature of TOI-1052b using precise radial velocity observations from HARPS and determined its parameters in a joint RV and photometry analysis. TOI-1052b has a radius of $2.87^{+0.29}_{-0.24}$ R⊕, a mass of 16.9 ± 1.7 M⊕, and an orbital period of 9.14 d. TOI-1052c does not show any transits in the TESS data, and has a minimum mass of $34.3^{+4.1}_{-3.7}$ M⊕ and an orbital period of 35.8 d, placing it just interior to the 4:1 mean-motion resonance. Both planets are best fit by relatively high but only marginally significant eccentricities of $0.18^{+0.09}_{-0.07}$ for planet b and $0.24^{+0.09}_{-0.08}$ for planet c. We perform a dynamical analysis and internal structure model of the planets as well as deriving stellar parameters and chemical abundances. The mean density of TOI-1052b is $3.9^{+1.7}_{-1.3}$ g cm−3 consistent with an internal structure similar to Neptune. A nearby star is observed in Gaia DR3 with the same distance and proper motion as TOI-1052, at a sky projected separation of $\scriptstyle \sim$1500 au, making this a potential wide binary star system.
