Displaced searches for Axion-Like Particles and Heavy Neutral Leptons at Mu3e

We present strategies for the Mu3e experiment to search for light, weakly coupled particles produced in rare muon decays, focusing on displaced e+e− decays within the hollow target. In most scenarios the backgrounds can be fully suppressed with a suitable set of cuts. We furthermore quantify the interplay between displaced and prompt searches at Mu3e and existing constraints, showing how Mu3e has a unique opportunity to probe unexplored parameter space.

Boosting background suppression in the NEXT experiment through Richardson-Lucy deconvolution

Next-generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiments aim for half-life sensitivities of ~ 10 27 yr, requiring suppressing backgrounds to < 1 count/tonne/yr. For this, any extra background rejection handle, beyond excellent energy resolution and the use of extremely radiopure materials, is of utmost importance. The NEXT experiment exploits differences in the spatial ionization patterns of double beta decay and single-electron events to discriminate signal from background. While the former display two Bragg peak dense ionization regions at the opposite ends of the track, the latter typically have only one such feature. Thus, comparing the energies at the track extremes provides an additional rejection tool. The unique combination of the topology-based background discrimination and excellent energy resolution (1% FWHM at the Q-value of the decay) is the distinguishing feature of NEXT. Previous studies demonstrated a topological background rejection factor of ~ 5 when reconstructing electron-positron pairs in the 208Tl 1.6 MeV double escape peak (with Compton events as background), recorded in the NEXT-White demonstrator at the Laboratorio Subterráneo de Canfranc, with 72% signal efficiency. This was recently improved through the use of a deep convolutional neural network to yield a background rejection factor of ~ 10 with 65% signal efficiency. Here, we present a new reconstruction method, based on the Richardson-Lucy deconvolution algorithm, which allows reversing the blurring induced by electron diffusion and electroluminescence light production in the NEXT TPC. The new method yields highly refined 3D images of reconstructed events, and, as a result, significantly improves the topological background discrimination. When applied to real-data 1.6 MeV e - e + pairs, it leads to a background rejection factor of 27 at 57% signal efficiency.

Measurement of e + e – → $\mathrm{K^+K^–π^0}$ cross section and observation of a resonant structure

Based on collision data collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at center-of-mass energies from 2.000 to 3.080 GeV, a partial-wave analysis is performed for the process $e^+e^–$→ $K^+K^–π^0$. The Born cross section of the process $e^+e^–$→ $K^+K^–π^0$ and its subprocesses $e^+e^–$ → $\phi π^0, K^{*+}$(892)$K^–$ and $K^{*+}_{2}$(1430)$K^–$ are measured. The results for $e^+e^–$→ $K^+K^–π^0$ and $\phi π^0$ are consistent with the BaBar measurements and with improved precision. By analyzing the cross sections of the subprocesses $e^+e^–$ → $K^{*+}$(892)$K^–$ and $K^{*+}_{2}$(1430)$K^–$ a structure with mass $M_R$ = (2190 ± 19 ± 37) MeV/c 2 and width $Γ_R$ = (191 ± 28 ± 60) MeV is observed with a combined statistical significance of 7.1σ. The measured resonance parameters suggest it can be identified as the $\phi$(2170), thus the results provide valuable input to understand the internal nature of this state.

Amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of $D_s^+$ →$K^–K^+π^+π^+π^–$

Using $e^+e^–$ annihilation data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 6.32 fb –1 collected at the center-of-mass energies between 4.178 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, we perform an amplitude analysis of the decay $D_s^+$ →$K^–K^+π^+π^+π^–$ and determine the relative fractions and phases of different intermediate processes. Absolute branching fraction of $D_s^+$ →$K^–K^+π^+π^+π^–$ decay is measured to be (6.60 ± 0.47 stat. ± 0.38 syst. ) x 10 –3 . The dominant intermediate process is $D_s^+$ → $a_1$(1260) + $\phi, \phi$ → $K^–K^+ a_1$(1260) + → $ρπ^+$, $ρ → π^+π^–$, with a branching fraction of (5.15 ± 0.41 stat. ± 0.32 syst. ) x 10 –3 .

Cross section measurements of the processes $e^+e^–$ → $ωπ^0$ and $ωη$ at center-of-mass energies between 3.773 and 4.701 GeV

The Born cross sections of the processes $e^+e^–$ → $ωπ^0$ and $e^+e^–$ → $ωη$ are measured at center-of-mass energies between 3.773 and 4.701 GeV using a total integrated luminosity of 22.7 fb –1 collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. A simple $s^{-n}$ dependence for the continuum process can describe the measured Born cross sections. No significant contributions from the ψ(4160), Y(4230), Y(4360), ψ(4415), Y(4660) resonances are found, which indicates relative small branching fractions for these resonances into the $ωπ^0$ and $ωη$ final states.

Measurement of the top quark pole mass using $ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} $+jet events in the dilepton final state in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A measurement of the top quark pole mass $\mathcal{m}^\text{pole}_\text{t}$ in events where a top quark-antiquark pair ($\text{t}\bar{\text{t}}$) is produced in association with at least one additional jet ($\text{t}\bar{\text{t}}$ +jet) is presented. This analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb -1 . Events with two opposite-sign leptons in the final state (e + e – , μ + μ – , e ± μ ∓ ) are analyzed. The reconstruction of the main observable and the event classification are optimized using multivariate analysis techniques based on machine learning. The production cross section is measured as a function of the inverse of the invariant mass of the $\text{t}\bar{\text{t}}$ +jet system at the parton level using a maximum likelihood unfolding. Given a reference parton distribution function (PDF), the top quark pole mass is extracted using the theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order. For the ABMP16NLO PDF, this results in $\mathcal{m}^\text{pole}_\text{t}$ = 172.93 ± 1.36 GeV.

Leptonic anomalous magnetic moments in ν SMEFT

We investigate contributions to the anomalous magnetic moments of charged leptons in the neutrino-extended Standard Model Effective Field Theory (νSMEFT). We discuss how νSMEFT operators can contribute to a lepton’s magnetic moment at one- and two-loop order. We show that only one operator can account for existing electronic and muonic discrepancies, assuming new physics appears above 1 TeV. In particular, we find that a right-handed charged current in combination with minimal sterile-active mixing can explain the discrepancy for sterile neutrino masses of $\mathcal{O}$(100) GeV while avoiding direct and indirect constraints. We discuss how searches for sterile neutrino production at the (HL-)LHC, measurements of h → μ + μ - and searches for h → e + e - , neutrinoless double beta decay experiments, and improved unitarity tests of the CKM matrix can further probe the relevant parameter space.

Axion-Like Particles at the ILC Giga-Z

Axion-Like Particles (ALPs) are a generic, calculable, and well motivated extension of the Standard Model with far reaching phenomenology. ALPs that couple only to hypercharge represent one subset of such models, coupling the ALP to both photons and the Z boson. We examine the current constraints on this class of models with an ALP mass in the 100 MeV to 100 GeV range, paying particular attention to the region between 100 MeV to 10 GeV, a portion of parameter space which is ill constrained by current experiments. We show that the more than 109 Z bosons produced in the Giga-Z mode of the future ILC experiment, combined with the highly granular nature of its detectors, will allow for ALPs coupled to hypercharge to be discovered with couplings down to nearly 10 –5 GeV –1 over a range of masses from 0.4 to 50 GeV.

We also search for double charmonium production in e + e - → ηcJ/ψ via initial state radiation near the ηcJ/ψ threshold. No evident signal of the double charmonium state is found, but evidence for the e + e - → ηcJ/ψ process is found with a statistical significance greater than 3.3σ near the ηcJ/ψ threshold. The average cross section near the threshold is measured and upper limits of cross sections are set for other regions.

Search for $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ → ℓ ∓ τ ± with the semi-leptonic tagging method at Belle

We present a search for the lepton-flavor-violating decays ${B}_s^0$ → ℓ ∓ τ ± , where ℓ = e, μ, using the full data sample of 121 fb -1 collected at the Υ(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e - collider. We use ${B}_s^0{\overline{B}}_s^0$ events in which one ${B}_s^0$ meson is reconstructed in a semileptonic decay mode and the other in the signal mode. We find no evidence for (${B}_s^0$ → ℓ ∓ τ ± decays and set upper limits on their branching fractions at 90% confidence level as $\mathcal{B}$(${B}_s^0$ → e ∓ τ ± ) < 14 × 10 -4 and $\mathcal{B}$ (${B}_s^0$ → μ ∓ τ ± ) < 7.3 × 10 -4 . Our result represents the first upper limit on the ${B}_s^0$ → e ∓ τ ± decay rate.

Test of light-lepton universality in τ decays with the Belle II experiment

We present a measurement of the ratio R µ = $\mathcal{B}$($τ^- → µ^-\overline{ν}_µν_τ$)/$\mathcal{B}(τ^- → e^-\overline{ν}_eν_τ$) of branching fractions B of the τ lepton decaying to muons or electrons using data collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB e + e - collider. The sample has an integrated luminosity of 362 ± 2 fb -1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. Using an optimised event selection, a binned maximum likelihood ft is performed using the momentum spectra of the electron and muon candidates. The result, R µ = 0.9675 ± 0.0007 ± 0.0036, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, is the most precise to date. It provides a stringent test of the light-lepton universality, translating to a ratio of the couplings of the muon and electron to the W boson in τ decays of 0.9974 ± 0.0019, in agreement with the standard model expectation of unity.

Measurement of light-by-light scattering and the Breit-Wheeler process, and search for axion-like particles in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

Measurements of light-by-light scattering (LbL, γγ → γγ) and the Breit-Wheeler process (BW, γγ → e + e − ) are reported in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV. The data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb −1 , was collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2018. Events with an exclusively produced γγ or e + e − pair with invariant masses m γγ,ee > 5 GeV, along with other fiducial criteria, are selected. The measured BW fiducial production cross section, σ fid (γγ → e + e − ) = 263.5 ± 1.8(stat) ± 17.8(syst) μb, as well as the differential distributions for various kinematic observables, are in agreement with leading-order quantum electrodynamics predictions complemented with final-state photon radiation. The measured differential BW cross sections allow discrimination between different theoretical descriptions of the photon flux of the lead ion. In the LbL final state, 26 exclusive diphoton candidate events are observed compared with 12.0 ± 2.9 expected for the background. Combined with previous results, the observed significance of the LbL signal with respect to the background-only hypothesis is above five standard deviations. The measured fiducial LbL scattering cross section, σ fid (γγ → γγ) = 107 ± 24(stat) ± 13(syst) nb, is in agreement with next- to-leading-order predictions. Limits on the production of axion-like particles coupled to photons are set over the mass range 5–100 GeV, including the most stringent limits to date in the range of 5–10 GeV.

We observe 0 and 1 events and set 90% confidence level upper limits of 0.8 × 10 −8 and 1.2 × 10 −8 on the branching fractions of the decay modes ${\tau }^{-}\to {e}^{-}{K}_{S}^{0}$ and ${\tau }^{-}\to {\mu }^{-}{K}_{S}^{0}$, respectively. These are the most stringent upper limits to date.

Measurement of branching fractions and search for CP violation in $D^0 → π^+π^-η, D^0 → K^+K^-η$, and $D^0 → Φη$ at Belle

We obtain $$\mathcal{B}(D^0 → π^+π^-η = \mathrm{[1.22 ± 0.02 (stat) ± 0.02(syst) ± 0.03}(\mathcal{B}_{\mathrm{ref}})] \mathrm{x 10^{-3}}$$ $$\mathcal{B}(D^0 → K^+K^-η = \mathrm{[1.80^{+0.07}_{-0.06}(stat) ± 0.04 (syst) ± 0.05}(\mathcal{B}_{\mathrm{ref}})] \mathrm{x 10^{-4}}$$ $$\mathcal{B}(D^0 → Φη = \mathrm{[1.84 ± 0.09 (stat) ± 0.0 (syst) ± 0.05}(\mathcal{B}_{\mathrm{ref}})] \mathrm{x 10^{-4}}$$ where the third uncertainty ($\mathcal{B}_{\mathrm{ref}}$) is from the uncertainty in the branching fraction of the reference mode $D^0 → K^-π^+η$. The color-suppressed decay $D^0 → Φη$ is observed for the first time, with very high significance. The results for the CP asymmetries are $$A_{CP} (D^0 → π^+π^-η) = \mathrm{[0.9 ± 1.2 (stat) ± 0.5 (syst)]}\%$$ $$A_{CP} (D^0 → K^+K^-η) = \mathrm{[-1.4 ± 3.3 (stat) ± 1.1 (syst)]}\%$$ $$A_{CP} (D^0 → Φη) = \mathrm{[-1.9 ± 4.4 (stat) ± 0.6 (syst)]}\%$$ The results for $D^0 → π^+π^-η$ are a significant improvement over previous results. The branching fraction and A CP results for $D^0 → K^+K^-η$, and the ACP result for $D^0 → Φη$, are the first such measurements. No evidence for CP violation is found in any of these decays.
