Not Your Ordinary GEM

Through Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) funding from NASA's Stennis Space Center, Geophex devised a new design for broadband electromagnetic sensors. Geophex developed a patented sensing technology, capable not only of coastal monitoring, but also a variety of other functions, including environmental pollution characterization, groundwater contamination detection, archaeological study, and mineral detection. The new technology is offered in several of the company's products the GEM-2, GEM-2A, and the GEM-3. The Geophex products consist of two primary electromagnetic coils, which are stimulated by alternating currents that generate a magnetic field in the object targeted for investigation. GEM-2 is a handheld, lightweight, programmable, digital device. GEM-2A is an airborne version of the sensor. Suspended from a helicopter, the GEM-2A is used to search for mineral deposits and to survey large tracts of land. The GEM-3 is capable of detecting buried landmines and other active munitions. GEM-3 identifies landmines by their brand names. Because each landmine has its own unique electromagnetic response to the broad frequency band emitted by the GEM-3, bomb identification and disposal strategies are made easier.

Hyperspectral Thermal Fabry-Perot Modeling

Fabry-Perot interferometer are simple elegant, tunable filters that can be used to make compact hyperspectral thermal imaging system. To foster the development of these sensors, software tools for the design and simulation of tunable Fabry-Perot infrared imagers have been developed. The tools are provided at three levels: basic, design, and system. Basic tools describe a nearly ideal Fabry-Perot filter with perfectly flat and parallel mirrors in collimated space. Design tools that take into account non-ideal behavior such as mirror and collimation defects calculate free spectral range, finesse, and spectral width of the interferometer. System tools help analyze an integration of the Fabry-Perot filter into a camera system. They include spectral convolution, first-order optical layout, and an estimation of signal-to-noise ratio. The complete set of tools allows for simulations of system operation and performance with various illumination sources. Spectral images generated in such simulations were used to examine applicability of Fabry-Perot system in remote sensing of atmospheric gases including detection of environmental pollutants and hazardous gases. Different operating conditions and system configurations are presented.

NO, nitrotyrosine, and cyclic GMP in signal transduction

Over the past 25 years, the role of nitric oxide (NO) in biology has evolved from being recognized as an environmental pollutant to an endogenously produced substance involved in cell communication and signal transduction. NO is produced by a family of enzymes called nitric oxide synthases (NOSs), which can be stimulated by a variety of factors that mediate responses to various stimuli. NO can initiate its biological effects through activation of the heterodimeric enzyme, soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC), or through several other chemical reactions. Activation of sGC results in the production of 3',5'-cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), an intracellular second messenger signaling molecule, which can subsequently mediate such diverse physiological events such as vasodilatation and immunomodulation. Chemically reactive NO can affect physiological changes through modifications to cellular proteins, one of which is tyrosine nitration. The demonstration that NO is involved in so many biological pathways indicates the importance of this endogenously produced substance, and suggests that there is much more to be discovered about its role in biology in years to come.

Remediation Technology Collaboration Development

This slide presentation reviews programs at NASA aimed at development at Remediation Technology development for removal of environmental pollutants from NASA sites. This is challenging because there are many sites with different environments, and various jurisdictions and regulations. There are also multiple contaminants. There must be different approaches based on location and type of contamination. There are other challenges: such as costs, increased need for resources and the amount of resources available, and a regulatory environment that is increasing.

Spatial Distribution of Aerosol Microphysical and Optical Properties and Direct Radiative Effect from the China Aerosol Remote Sensing Network

Multi-year observations of aerosol microphysical and optical properties, obtained through ground-based remote sensing at 50 China Aerosol Remote Sensing Network (CARSNET) sites, were used to characterize the aerosol climatology for representative remote, rural, and urban areas over China to assess effects on climate. The annual mean effective radii for total particles (ReffT) decreased from north to south and from rural to urban sites, and high total particle volumes were found at the urban sites. The aerosol optical depth at 440 nm (AOD440 nm) increased from remote and rural sites (0.12) to urban sites (0.79), and the extinction Ångström exponent (EAE440–870 nm) increased from 0.71 at the arid and semi-arid sites to 1.15 at the urban sites, presumably due to anthropogenic emissions. Single-scattering albedo (SSA440 nm) ranged from 0.88 to 0.92, indicating slightly to strongly absorbing aerosols. Absorption AOD440 nm values were 0.01 at the remote sites versus 0.07 at the urban sites. The average direct aerosol radiative effect (DARE) at the bottom of atmosphere increased from the sites in the remote areas (−24.40 W m−2) to the urban areas (−103.28 W m−2), indicating increased cooling at the latter. The DARE for the top of the atmosphere increased from −4.79 W m−2 at the remote sites to −30.05 W m−2 at the urban sites, indicating overall cooling effects for the Earth–atmosphere system. A classification method based on SSA440 nm, fine-mode fraction (FMF), and EAE440–870 nm showed that coarse-mode particles (mainly dust) were dominant at the rural sites near the northwestern deserts, while light-absorbing, fine-mode particles were important at most urban sites. This study will be important for understanding aerosol climate effects and regional environmental pollution, and the results will provide useful information for satellite validation and the improvement of climate modelling.

Portable x-ray fluorescence spectrometer for environmental monitoring of inorganic pollutants

A portable x-ray fluorescence spectrometer has a portable sensor unit containing a battery, a high voltage power supply, an x-ray tube which produces a beam x-ray radiation directed toward a target sample, and a detector for fluorescent x-rays produced by the sample. If a silicon-lithium detector is used, the sensor unit also contains either a thermoelectric or thermochemical cooler, or a small dewar flask containing liquid nitrogen to cool the detector. A pulse height analyzer (PHA) generates a spectrum of data for each sample consisting of the number of fluorescent x-rays detected as a function of their energy level. The PHA can also store spectrum data for a number of samples in the field. A processing unit can be attached to the pulse height analyzer to upload and analyze the stored spectrum data for each sample. The processing unit provides a graphic display of the spectrum data for each sample, and provides qualitative and/or quantitative analysis of the elemental composition of the sample by comparing the peaks in the sample spectrum against known x-ray energies for various chemical elements. An optional filtration enclosure can be used to filter particles from a sample suspension, either in the form of a natural suspension or a chemically created precipitate. The sensor unit is then temporarily attached to the filtration unit to analyze the particles collected by the filter medium.

Escalating trends in the urban metabolism of Hong Kong: 1971-1997

Urban metabolism measures quantitatively a city's load on the natural environment. We update the Newcombe et al. (3) pioneering study of Hong Kong's urban metabolism in 1971, highlighting trends in resource consumption and waste generation. Per capita food, water and materials consumption have surged since the early 1970s by 20%, 40%, and 149%, respectively. Tremendous pollution has accompanied this growing affluence and materialism, and total air emissions, CO2 outputs, municipal solid wastes, and sewage discharges have risen by 30%, 250%, 245%, and 153%. As a result, systemic overload of land, atmospheric and water systems has occurred. While some strategies to tackle deteriorating environmental quality have succeeded, greater and more far-reaching changes in consumer behavior and government policy are needed if Hong Kong is to achieve its stated goal of becoming "a truly sustainable city" in the 21st century.

Impacts of Improved Process Representation of Particle Dry Deposition on PM Pollution in a Global Chemistry-Climate Model: Differences Across Regions, Seasons, and PM Sizes

Dry deposition (DD) is a primary removal pathway of particulate matter (PM). The aerosol DD schemes in most global models do not reflect current mechanistic understanding gleaned from observations. The NASA GISS global chemistry-climate model has a new and more dynamic DD scheme that largely captures observed changes in deposition velocities with particle size. We quantify the response of simulated PM to changes in the DD scheme for the Northeast US, Central Europe, North China Plain, and Punjab. Relative to the widely used old scheme, the new scheme shows higher annual PM2.5 for all regions (up to +14%) except C. Europe where there are very small decreases. For PM1, annual increases occur over all regions (up to +20%). For PM10, there are decreases in C. Europe (-8%) and very small decreases in the NE US yet increases (up to +12%) in Punjab and N. China Plain. While there are always increases across seasons for Punjab and N. China Plain, there are both seasonal increases and decreases for the NE US and C. Europe. Given incomplete understanding of observed variations in deposition velocities for a given particle size, we perform sensitivity simulations that perturb the magnitude of the deposition velocities simulated by the new scheme. The annual PM response to increasing DD is similar in magnitude to decreasing DD, implying linearity in the PM sensitivity to DD. The relative annual response to perturbing the DD magnitude is weaker over Punjab and sometimes N. China Plain than the NE US and C. Europe. Higher PM over Punjab and N. China Plain implies a stronger sensitivity to DD when aerosol abundances are low. More mechanistic representation of aerosol DD can sometimes improve or worsen existing model PM biases, which suggests that PM biases due to other processes can be confounded or compounded by biases in DD. Further improvements to DD parameterizations require not only more observational constraints on aerosol deposition velocities but also an advanced understanding of the processes controlling observed variability.

Lean, premixed, prevaporized combustion for aircraft gas turbine engines

The application of lean, premixed, prevaporized combustion to aircraft turbine engine systems can result in benefits in terms of superior combustion performance, improved combustor and turbine durability, and environmentally acceptable pollutant emissions. Lean, premixed prevaporized combustion is particularly attractive for reducing the oxides of nitrogen emissions during high altitude cruise. The NASA stratospheric cruise emission reduction program will evolve and demonstrate lean, premixed, prevaporized combustion technology for aircraft engines. This multiphased program is described. In addition, the various elements of the fundamental studies phase of the program are reviewed, and results to date of many of these studies are summarized.
