Error Control Coding Techniques for Space and Satellite Communications

This paper presents a concatenated turbo coding system in which a Reed-Solomom outer code is concatenated with a binary turbo inner code. In the proposed system, the outer code decoder and the inner turbo code decoder interact to achieve both good bit error and frame error performances. The outer code decoder helps the inner turbo code decoder to terminate its decoding iteration while the inner turbo code decoder provides soft-output information to the outer code decoder to carry out a reliability-based soft-decision decoding. In the case that the outer code decoding fails, the outer code decoder instructs the inner code decoder to continue its decoding iterations until the outer code decoding is successful or a preset maximum number of decoding iterations is reached. This interaction between outer and inner code decoders reduces decoding delay. Also presented in the paper are an effective criterion for stopping the iteration process of the inner code decoder and a new reliability-based decoding algorithm for nonbinary codes.

Polar Coding For Forward Error Correction In Space Communications With LDPC Comparisons

With the surging development of optical telecommunicationsfor space applications, the importance of errorcorrection has become more apparent than ever. Specifically, the exploration of forward error correction code (FEC) methodologieswill be instrumental in developing the standards foroptical communications in space. Despite the widespread useof low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, alternate FEC codessuch as polar codes have shown immense promise in assistingspace communications error correction with their ability tobypass the error floors that plague LDPC codes. Extremelypromising techniques including cyclic redundancy checks (CRC),successive cancellation (SC), and successive cancellation lists(SCL) that assist polar coding in achieving the Shannon limitin a timely manner are evaluated. MATLAB simulations areconducted with AWGN and burst noise to test each technique'sability to handle noise typically encountered in space and eachtechnique's ability to correct unexpected errors. Results ofsimulations for different rates and message lengths are alsoreported to determine each technique's ability to handle largedata volumes and fix errors. Similar simulations are conductedfor LDPC codes with additional tests for convolutional and nointerleavers. Finally, a discussion regarding the future ability ofpolar codes to satisfy current missions in the place of, or inconjunction with, LDPC codes along with the merits of eachFEC technique's ability to process data efficiently and handledata while maintaining adequate performance will be provided.Preliminary recommendations will be made for each technique'seffectiveness for GEO related missions along with discussionsregarding each technique's ability to fit within the CCSDS standards for optical communications.

Error-correcting codes in computer arithmetic.

Summary of the most important results so far obtained in the theory of coding for the correction and detection of errors in computer arithmetic. Attempts to satisfy the stringent reliability demands upon the arithmetic unit are considered, and special attention is given to attempts to incorporate redundancy into the numbers themselves which are being processed so that erroneous results can be detected and corrected.

A concatenated coding scheme for error control

A concatenated coding scheme for error control in data communications is analyzed. The inner code is used for both error correction and detection, however the outer code is used only for error detection. A retransmission is requested if the outer code detects the presence of errors after the inner code decoding. The probability of undetected error of the above error control scheme is derived and upper bounded. Two specific exmaples are analyzed. In the first example, the inner code is a distance-4 shortened Hamming code with generator polynomial (X+1)(X(6)+X+1) = X(7)+X(6)+X(2)+1 and the outer code is a distance-4 shortened Hamming code with generator polynomial (X+1)X(15+X(14)+X(13)+X(12)+X(4)+X(3)+X(2)+X+1) = X(16)+X(12)+X(5)+1 which is the X.25 standard for packet-switched data network. This example is proposed for error control on NASA telecommand links. In the second example, the inner code is the same as that in the first example but the outer code is a shortened Reed-Solomon code with symbols from GF(2(8)) and generator polynomial (X+1)(X+alpha) where alpha is a primitive element in GF(z(8)).

A concatenated coding scheme for error control

A concatenated coding scheme for error contol in data communications was analyzed. The inner code is used for both error correction and detection, however the outer code is used only for error detection. A retransmission is requested if either the inner code decoder fails to make a successful decoding or the outer code decoder detects the presence of errors after the inner code decoding. Probability of undetected error of the proposed scheme is derived. An efficient method for computing this probability is presented. Throughout efficiency of the proposed error control scheme incorporated with a selective repeat ARQ retransmission strategy is analyzed.

Deconvolution Approach to Carrier and Code Multipath Error Elimination in High Precision GPS

This paper proposes a novel technique based on the deconvolution approach of the simultaneous estimation and compensation of the multipath estimation errors in both the carrier phase lock and the code delay lock loops in GPS receivers. Simulation results are presented showing that the proposed GPS receiver algorithm achieves high precision in the range and differential range estimation in various GPS precision applications such as spacecraft attitude control, even in a relatively severe multipath environment.

Error detecting capabilities of the shortened Hamming codes adopted for error detection in IEEE Standard 802.3

The error-detecting capabilities of the shortened Hamming codes adopted for error detection in IEEE Standard 802.3 are investigated. These codes are also used for error detection in the data link layer of the Ethernet, a local area network. The weight distributions for various code lengths are calculated to obtain the probability of undetectable error and that of detectable error for a binary symmetric channel with bit-error rate between 0.00001 and 1/2.

Decoding of B.C.H. and R.S. codes with errors and erasures using continued fractions

Through the use of continuing fractions, a simplified algorithm for decoding B.C.H. and R.S. codes is developed that corrects both erasures and errors on a finite field GF(q to the m). It is noted that the decoding method is a modification of the Forney-Belekamp technique. Finally, it is believed that the present scheme is both simpler to understand and to implement than more conventional algorithms.

Reliability and coverage analysis of non-repairable fault-tolerant memory systems

A method was developed for the construction of probabilistic state-space models for nonrepairable systems. Models were developed for several systems which achieved reliability improvement by means of error-coding, modularized sparing, massive replication and other fault-tolerant techniques. From the models developed, sets of reliability and coverage equations for the systems were developed. Comparative analyses of the systems were performed using these equation sets. In addition, the effects of varying subunit reliabilities on system reliability and coverage were described. The results of these analyses indicated that a significant gain in system reliability may be achieved by use of combinations of modularized sparing, error coding, and software error control. For sufficiently reliable system subunits, this gain may far exceed the reliability gain achieved by use of massive replication techniques, yet result in a considerable saving in system cost.

A cascaded coding scheme for error control and its performance analysis

A coding scheme for error control in data communication systems is investigated. The scheme is obtained by cascading two error-correcting codes, called the inner and outer codes. Its error performance is analyzed for a binary symmetric channel with bit-error rate epsilon less than 1/2. It is shown that, if the inner and outer codes are chosen properly, high reliability can be attained even for a high-channel bit-error rate. Specific examples with inner codes ranging from high rates and Reed-Solomon codes as outer codes are considered, and their error probabilities evaluated. They all provide high reliability even for high bit-error rates, say 0.1-0.01. Several example schemes are being considered for satellite and spacecraft downlink error control.
