Simulated space environment effects on the optical properties of poly(arylene ethers)

Results are reported from a study of the stability of poly(arylene ethers) formed in a reaction of 1,3 -bis(4-chlorobenzoyl)benzene and various bisphenols after experiencing long-term exposure to space conditions. Transparent poly(arylene ethers) films were subjected to separate electron and UV bombardments, as were polysulfone and Kapton films for comparisons. The order of exposure to the two types of radiation was reversed for two sample populations. The optical properties and glass transition temperatures of the samples were determined after irradiation. The poly(arylene ethers) films exhibited good resistance to the electron radiation but suffered severe degradation in the UV environment. The loss of optical transmissivity was proportional to the UV radiation dose.

New polyarylene ethers

A series of new polyarylene ethers (PAEs) were prepared from the reaction of activated dihalo compounds with various bisphenols. Measured number average molecular weights for the PAEs ranged from 13,500 to 39,400 g/mole, and glass transition temperatures varied from 152 to 280 C. Ethynyl-terminated polyarylene ethers (ETPAEs) were also prepared by endcapping hydroxy-terminated polyarylene ethers with 4-ethynylbenzoyl chloride. Structure/property relationships for the PAEs, and the advantages offered by the ETPAEs, are discussed.

Synthesis, curing and physical behavior of maleimide terminated poly(arylene ethers)

This paper describes the synthesis of maleimide terminated poly(ether ketones) using the solution imidization process described by Summers et al. (1987). Amorphous poly(arylene ether ketones), as well as poly(arylene ether sulfones, of controlled end group functionalities and molecular weights were synthesized by nucleophilic step polymerization of bisphehol-A phenolates with activated halides, such as 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone, and 'monofunctional' end cappers such as m-aminophenol. The thermal properties of the system included glass transition temperature (Tg) values of 160-170 C, with modulus above Tg proportional to cross-link density, which in turn was reciprocally related to oligomer molecular weight. The measurements of the fracture toughness values showed the materials to be very ductile, with the toughness increasing with oligomer molecular weight.

Functionalized poly(arylene ethers) as toughness modifiers for bismaleimides

A family of novel, low molecular weight functionalized poly(arylene ether) resins has been investigated to ascertain its members' toughness-imparting contribution to neat bismaleimide (BMI) resin and BMI-matrix laminate composite properties. Attention is given to the contribution of the reactive poly(arylene ether)'s backbone chemistry to fracture toughness, as well as to the comparative influence of high and low molecular weight reactive poly(arylene ether) types on the modified BMI resin systems. The modified BMIs possess a polyphase morphology, with good adhesion between the thermoplastic nodules and the host thermoset systems.

Imide/Arylene Ether Copolymers

New imide/arylene ether copolymers prepared by reacting anhydride-terminated poly(amic acids) with amine-terminated poly(arylene ethers) in polar aprotic solvents. Each resulting copolymer may have one glass-transition temperature or two, depending on chemical structure and/or compatibility of block units. Most of copolymers form tough, solvent-resistant films with high tensile properties. Films cast from solution tough and flexible, and exhibit useful thermal and mechanical properties. Potentially useful as moldings, adhesives, or composite matrices. Because of flexible arylene ether blocks, these copolymers easier to process than polyimides.

Enhancement of molecular weight build up in polyimides using ether solvents

Two linear polyimides were prepared in various ether and amide solvents. The inherent viscosity was then monitored as a function of time. The polymers made in the ether solvents consistently gave higher inherent viscosities, and thus molecular weights, than the same polymers made in the amide solvents. This molecular weight buildup is attributed to the unique solvation mechanism of the ether solvents which enhances the basicity of the amines via hydrogen bonding.

New aromatic activated dihalides and bisphenol monomers for the preparation of novel poly(arylene ethers)

The goal of this research program was to synthesize a series of unique monomers of type I to be utilized at NASA-Langley in the preparation of new poly(arylene ether ketones), poly(arylene ether ketosulfones), and poly(arylene ether ketophosphine oxides). These A-A and A-B monomer systems, which possess activated aryl halide and/or phenolic end groups, are accessible via condensation reactions of appropriately substituted aryl acetonitrile carbanions with activated aryl dihalides followed by oxidative decyanation.

Contact angle measurements of a polyphenyl ether to 190 C on M-50 steel

Contact angle measurements were performed for a polyphenyl ether on steel in nitrogen. A tilting plate and a sessile drop apparatus were used. Surface tension was measured with a maximum bubble pressure apparatus. Critical surface energies of spreading were found to be 30.1 and 31.3 dynes/cm. It was concluded that the polyphenyl ether is inherently autophobic and will not spread on its own surface film.

Effects of 70-keV electrons on two polyarylene ether ketones

Films prepared from two polyarylene ether ketones with the repeat units -PhC(O)PhC(O)-PhOPhXPhO- where X = C(CH3)2 or CH2 and Ph = C6H4, were bombarded with 70-keV electrons. The effects of irradiation were determined from the fraction of gel formed; the intrinsic viscosities, gel permeation chromatography, and NMR spectroscopy of the soluble portion of the irradiated films; and the changes in the IR spectra of the materials. In a Charlesby-Pinner analysis of the gel fractions of the polyarylene ether ketone with the isopropylidene group, the numbers of scission and cross-linking events per 100 eV (9649 kJ/mol) absorbed were found to be small with G(S) = 0.002 and G(X) = 0.009, respectively.
