Compilation of Experimental Yield Data for Spontaneous Fission of 252 Cf

We present a comprehensive compilation and curation of experimental fission yield (FY) data for the spontaneous fission of 252 Cf, extracted from the EXFOR database. The compilation follows a structured methodology developed for prior compilations of neutron-induced fission yields, and incorporates both independent (IFY) and cumulative (CFY) yields. A total of 62 datasets were reviewed, with entries spanning from 1955 to 2021. A significant portion of the literature reports pre-neutron emission yields, which were excluded from the present compilation due to limitations in format compatibility. Each accepted dataset was processed into a standardized JSON format, including metadata, uncertainties, and bibliographic references. Where available, decay radiation information was used to update the FY data using the latest ENSDF evaluations; 237 data points were corrected accordingly. These corrections are fully traceable and preserve original values. The result is a curated dataset suitable for use in nuclear data evaluations. This work is part of an ongoing effort to modernize the handling of FY data and provide evaluators with high-quality, machine-readable experimental inputs

Understanding Peelle’s Pertinent Puzzle bias in generalized least squares regression through eigenspectrum analysis

Certain correlation structures in the data covariance matrix (DCM) used for generalized least squares (GLS) regression can result in biased estimates, commonly known in the field of nuclear data evaluation as Peele’s Pertinent Puzzle (PPP). This article introduces a generative, forward modeling framework within which the PPP bias is characterized through an eigenspectrum analysis of the DCM. This analysis highlights the root cause of the bias, generalizes the problem beyond the nuclear data field, and provides insight to the problem regimes where it can occur. What follows is an understanding that the bias can show up for any experimental neutron time-of-flight data for which systematic uncertainties have been quantified. Lastly, a discussion of the adaptation of cross validation approaches that require pre-whitening to incorporate the known ‘fix’ to the PPP bias in the GLS estimator.

IER 516: Zirconium Test Assembly CED Phase-1: Preliminary Experiment Design

IER-516, Zirconium Test Assembly (ZTA), is a campaign to design, execute, and document a series of high-fidelity critical benchmark experiments to validate current and future zirconium (Zr) and zirconium hydride (ZrH x ) nuclear data evaluations. ZTA is a collaborative project between Los Alamos National Laboratory and the French Autoritè de Sûretè Nuclèaire et de Radioprotection. The experiments will be fueled with highly enriched uranium (HEU), and utilize the Comet critical assembly machine at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center. A total of ten preliminary critical experiments were designed and optimized for Zr and ZrHx nuclear data sensitivities using the MCNP-Particle Swarm Optimization methodology in the thermal, epithermal, intermediate, and fast neutron energy regions.

NCSP supports 240 Pu prompt fission neutron spectrum (PFNS) evaluation

A new 240 Pu PFNS evaluation was recently undertaken at LANL as a strategic priority. It truly is an NCSP end-to-end product. It factors in a new differential experiment funded by NCSP, builds on theoretical work coming out of a previous NCSP nuclear data evaluation milestone and was validated with an NCERC experiment that was recently evaluated as an integral benchmark with NCSP funds.

Analysis of NCERC Critical Experiments with ENDF/B Nuclear Data Libraries

Nuclear data (ND) libraries are the backbone of the nuclear industry, as they are the collections of tabulated probabilities that define sub-atomic particle interactions with matter. In the areas of criticality safety and experiments, no evaluated nuclear data files (ENDF) are more important than those containing neutron cross section data. It is upon these files, and accompanying radiation transport codes, that practitioners are enabled to safely design both subcritical and critical systems. Likewise, in a symbiotic fashion, it is the same critical assemblies which are used primarily to validate that the cross sections are correct. The ENDF/B library, the United States’ national library maintained by the National Nuclear Data Center (NNDC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), is soon releasing a new version, ENDF/B-VIII.1. Prior to the official release, several beta versions of the library were prepared and tested in simulation suites. The work presented here are results comparing the newest ENDF/B beta release (ENDF/B-VIII.1b3) and ENDF/B-VIII.0 with recent experiments done at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) as well as correlated experiments from the Los Alamos Critical Experiments Facility (LACEF). These NCERC and LACEF experiments were performed in part to provide validation for various cross sections that were identified as insufficient in the ENDF/B-VIII.0. In particular, lead, copper, fluorine, and chlorine, as well as the major actinides, were targeted from the last decade of critical experiments.

Application of SAMMY for Non-Destructive Characterization of Irradiated Samples Using Neutron Transmission Measurements at VENUS

This report presents the application of SAMMY (Larson 2008), an R-matrix Bayesian fitting system, for analyzing neutron transmission data to enable non-destructive isotopic identification. Transmission measurements were conducted at the VENUS (Bilheux et al. 2023) beamline of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) using samples with unknown or partially characterized compositions. Through the application of SAMMY’s R-matrix Bayesian fitting capabilities to the measured transmission spectra and comparison against evaluated nuclear data libraries, isotopic constituents can be quantitatively determined based on their characteristic neutron resonance signatures. This methodology demonstrates significant potential for applications in nuclear safeguards, forensics, and post-irradiation examination.

Measurement of the 28 Si ⁢(𝑛,𝑛′⁢𝛾) cross section with 𝑛, 𝛾, and correlated 𝑛−𝛾 angular distributions

Silicon has become an unavoidable element in the circuitry central to everyday life. In turn, the interactions of silicon isotopes with neutrons for nuclear physics applications, among other motivations, have become increasingly important to understand. The dominant isotope of silicon, 28 Si, is thus of primary interest for enhanced understanding for neutron transport calculations and related investigations. Unfortunately, the existing measurement database for neutron scattering reactions on 28 Si is minimal, and nuclear data evaluations on this topic have not been updated for decades. This article details new measurements of the 28 Si ⁢(𝑛,𝑛′⁢𝛾) reaction utilizing multiple analysis methods available within the correlated gamma neutron array for scattering (CoGNAC). Specifically, high-precision near-threshold results and high-incident-energy results were obtained using the 𝛾-only and correlated 𝑛−𝛾 techniques. First-ever measurements of the correlated 𝑛−𝛾 angular distribution for particles emitted following population of the first excited state in 28 Si were obtained as well, which provide unique insight into theoretical descriptions of the inelastic neutron scattering reaction mechanism itself and detailed guidance for nuclear reaction models. The results agree well with literature data where they exist, and substantially expand on the current database for neutron reactions on 28 Si .

SPARTA: A flux adjustment methodology to interpret complex experiments

For the accurate determination of reactivity from a detector count rate, correction of spatial effects is of prime importance. This spatial correction is often provided using simulation methodologies, but this may introduce a bias if the result of the experiment is also used as input data for the simulation. Here, this work presents a flux adjustment methodology able to infer experimental reactivity and correction of spatial effects without the need for a simulation. It can process the signal from a complex experiment such as a heat balance measurement in the TREAT reactor, where control rods are continuously adjusted to maintain a constant power. In the present work, this methodology successfully computed the reactivity and the local spatial variation of the flux of a generated signal. It also proved to be robust against noise and errors on kinetic parameters and provides a credible interpretation of a heat balance experiment in TREAT. Efficiency of flux adjustment methods for complex experiment enable a better experiment interpretation less reliant on nuclear data evaluation.
