Numerical fluid dynamics for FRG flow equations: Zero-dimensional QFTs as numerical test cases. II. Entropy production and irreversibility of RG flows

Herein we demonstrate that the reformulation of renormalization group (RG) flow equations as nonlinear heat equations has severe implications on the understanding of RG flows in general. We demonstrate by explicitly constructing an entropy function for a zero-dimensional Z 2 -symmetric model that the dissipative character of generic nonlinear diffusion equations is also hard-coded in the functional RG equation. This renders RG flows manifestly irreversible, revealing the semigroup property of RG transformations on the level of the flow equation itself. Additionally, we argue that the dissipative character of RG flows, its irreversibility and the entropy production during the RG flow may be linked to the existence of a so-called C– / A-function. In total, this introduces an asymmetry in the so-called RG time—in complete analogy to the thermodynamic arrow of time—and allows for an interpretation of infrared actions as equilibrium solutions of dissipative RG flows equations. The impossibility of resolving microphysics from macrophysics is evident in this framework. Furthermore, we directly link the irreversibility and the entropy production in RG flows to an explicit numerical entropy production, which is manifest in diffusive and non-linear partial differential equations (PDEs) and a standard mathematical tool for the analysis of PDEs. Using exactly solvable zero-dimensional Z 2 -symmetric models, we explicitly compute the (numerical) entropy production related to the total variation nonincreasing property of the PDE during RG flows toward the infrared limit. Finally, we discuss generalizations of our findings and relations to the C– / A-theorem as well as how our work may help to construct truncations of RG flow equations in the future, including numerically stable schemes for solving the corresponding PDEs.

Completely Positive, Simple, and Possibly Highly Accurate Approximation of the Redfield Equation

Here we present a Lindblad master equation that approximates the Redfield equation, a well known master equation derived from first principles, without significantly compromising the range of applicability of the Redfield equation. Instead of full-scale coarse-graining, this approximation only truncates terms in the Redfield equation that average out over a time-scale typical of the quantum system. The first step in this approximation is to properly renormalize the system Hamiltonian, to symmetrize the gains and losses of the state due to the environmental coupling. In the second step, we swap out an arithmetic mean of the spectral density with a geometric one, in these gains and losses, thereby restoring complete positivity. This completely positive approximation, GAME (geometric-arithmetic master equation), is adaptable between its time-independent, time-dependent, and Floquet form. In the exactly solvable, three-level, Jaynes-Cummings model, we find that the error of the approximate state is almost an order of magnitude lower than that obtained by solving the coarse-grained stochastic master equation. As a test-bed, we use a ferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-chain with long-range dipole-dipole coupling between up to 25-spins, and study the differences between various master equations. We find that GAME has the highest accuracy per computational resource.

A most misunderstood conditionally-solvable quantum-mechanical model

Highlights: • The Schrödinger equation for some quantum-mechanical models is separable in cylindrical coordinates. • The radial equation exhibits harmonic, linear and Coulomb-like interactions. • The Frobenius method leads to three-term recurrence relations. • Some particular energies are obtained from truncation of the recurrence relation. • Many authors misunderstood these results. In this paper we show that several authors have derived wrong physical conclusions from a gross misunderstanding of the exact eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a conditionally-solvable quantum-mechanical model. It consists of an eigenvalue equation with seemingly Coulomb, linear and harmonic terms. Here we compare the results derived by those authors with the actual eigenvalues of the models calculated by means of the Ritz variational method.

Comments on the quantum field theory of the Coulomb gas formalism

The holomorphic Coulomb gas formalism, as developed by Feigin-Fuchs, Dotsenko-Fateev and Felder, is a set of rules for computing minimal model observables using free field techniques. We attempt to derive and clarify these rules using standard techniques of quantum field theory. We begin with a careful examination of the timelike linear dilaton. Although the background charge of the model breaks the scalar field’s continuous shift symmetry, the exponential of the action remains invariant under a discrete shift because the background charge is imaginary. Gauging this symmetry makes the dilaton compact and introduces winding modes into the spectrum. One of these winding operators corresponds to the anti-holomorphic completion of the BRST current first introduced by Felder, and the full left/right cohomology of this BRST charge isolates the irreducible representations of the Virasoro algebra within the degenerate Fock space of the linear dilaton. The “supertrace” in the BRST complex reproduces the minimal model partition function and exhibits delicate cancellations between states with both momentum and winding. The model at the radius $R=\sqrt{pp^{\prime }}$ has two marginal operators corresponding to the Dotsenko-Fateev “screening charges”. Deforming by them, we obtain a model that might be called a “BRST quotiented compact timelike Liouville theory”. The Hamiltonian of the zero-mode quantum mechanics of this model is not Hermitian, but it is PT -symmetric and exactly solvable. Its eigenfunctions have support on an infinite number of plane waves, suggesting an infinite reduction in the number of independent states in the full quantum field theory. Applying conformal perturbation theory to the exponential interactions reproduces the Coulomb gas calculations of minimal model correlation functions. In contrast to spacelike Liouville, these “resonance correlators” are finite because the zero mode is compact. We comment on subtleties regarding the reflection operator identification, as well as naive violations of truncation in correlators with multiple reflection operators inserted. This work is part of an attempt to understand the relationship between the JT model of two dimen- sional gravity and the worldsheet description of the (2 , p ) minimal string as suggested by Seiberg and Stanford.

A solvable model of a nonlinear extension of quantum mechanics

We introduce a particular nonlinear generalization of quantum mechanics which has the property that it is exactly solvable in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian of the usual linear quantum mechanics problem. Here, we hope that this simple example will elucidate some of the issues of interpreting nonlinear generalization of quantum mechanics that have been put forth to resolve questions about quantum measurement theory.

Is there an exact magnetic moment for charged particle motion in a time-dependent, homogeneous magnetic field?

The non-perturbative guiding-centre model provides an exact alternative to full-orbit simulations of charged particle dynamics in situations where traditional guiding-centre theory may fail. We demonstrate that the charged particle motion in a homogeneous, time-varying magnetic field is a solvable example of the non-perturbative guiding-centre model. This entails showing that the exact magnetic moment of Qin and Davidson can be constructed to be asymptotic to the adiabatic invariant series of Kruskal. In contrast to the perturbative invariant, the exact invariant contains information about parametric resonances. These resonances destroy the conservation of the usual magnetic moment over very long times. This refutes some previous claims about the all-time invariance of the magnetic moment.

Kitaev model on a quantum computer using VQE with Majorana fermions

We study the simulation of the Kitaev spin model on quantum computers. In particular we focus on the models defined on the honeycomb, and square-octagon lattices. Using a fermionic language to describe these models reveals a region of the parameter space that is exactly solvable. We explore an ansatz that is capable of expressing the ground state in the exactly solvable region of the parameter space and extend it outside this region with good accuracy. Doing the calculation using fermions, while requiring the introduction of a non-local map from the fermionic Hilbert space to that of qubits, offers the potentially interesting application of realizing non-abelian anyons on quantum computers, and can also lead to a reduction in the number of qubits required by half.

Chiral magnetism: a geometric perspective

We discuss a geometric perspective on chiral ferromagnetism. Much like gravity becomes the effect of spacetime curvature in theory of relativity, the Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction arises in a Heisenberg model with nontrivial spin parallel transport. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vectors serve as a background SO(3) gauge field. In 2 spatial dimensions, the model is partly solvable when an applied magnetic field matches the gauge curvature. At this special point, solutions to the Bogomolny equation are exact excited states of the model. We construct a variational ground state in the form of a skyrmion crystal and confirm its viability by Monte Carlo simulations. The geometric perspective offers insights into important problems in magnetism, e.g., conservation of spin current in the presence of chiral interactions.

$\gamma$-Unstable Bohr Hamiltonian with sextic potential for odd-A nuclei

We report in this paper, odd-A nuclei in the vibrational to γ-soft transitional region are studied in the collective model, in which the odd-A system is described by the Bohr Hamiltonian with the quasi exactly solvable sextic β-part potential for the even-even core coupled with a single nucleon in a j = 3/2 orbit via the β-independent five-dimensional spin-orbit interaction and the total angular momentum degeneracy breaking term. To test the validity of the coupling scheme, we use the model to reproduce experimentally available level energies and B(E2) values of 187,189,191,193,195 Ir. It is clearly shown from both the level energies and the known B(E2) values for 191,193I r fitted that the model with the β-independent five-dimensional spin-orbit interaction and the total angular momentum degeneracy breaking term seems adequate to describe the low-lying level pattern and the structure of these odd-A nuclei.

A solvable quantum field theory with asymptotic freedom in (3+1) dimensions

Recently, Ai, Bender and Sarkar gave a prescription on how to obtain [Formula: see text]-symmetric field theory results from an analytic continuation of Hermitian field theories. We perform this analytic continuation for the massless (critical) [Formula: see text] model with quartic interaction in (3+1) dimensions. In the large-[Formula: see text] limit, this theory is exactly solvable, and has negative [Formula: see text]-function in the ultraviolet, and a stable bound state in the infrared. The coupling diverges at a scale [Formula: see text], but can be continued into the far infrared. At finite temperature, the theory exhibits two phases separated by a second-order phase transition near [Formula: see text].

Band mixing in 96,98 Mo isotopes *

Abstract We use the two lowest weight states to fit E 2 strengths connecting the and transitions in Mo. Our results confirm that the and states are maximally mixed, and that the states are weakly mixed in both nuclei. An appropriate Hamiltonian to represent the band mixing is found to be exactly solvable, and its eigenstates can be expressed as the basis vectors in the configuration mixing scheme and interacting boson model. The interacting boson model and coexistence mixing configuration under the solvable methods are suitable models for analyzing the band mixing with high accuracy.

Topological Green’s Function Zeros in an Exactly Solved Model and Beyond

The interplay of topological electronic band structures and strong interparticle interactions provides a promising path towards the constructive design of robust, long-range entangled many-body systems. As a prototype for such systems, we here study an exactly integrable, local model for a fractionalized topological insulator. Using a controlled perturbation theory about this limit, we demonstrate the existence of topological bands of zeros in the exact fermionic Green’s function and show that in this model they do affect the topological invariant of the system, but not the quantized transport response. Close to (but prior to) the Higgs transition signaling the breakdown of fractionalization, the topological bands of zeros acquire a finite “lifetime.” We also discuss the appearance of edge states and edge zeros at real space domain walls separating different phases of the system. This model provides a fertile ground for controlled studies of the phenomenology of Green’s function zeros and the underlying exactly solvable lattice gauge theory illustrates the synergetic cross pollination between solid-state theory, high-energy physics, and quantum information science.

Confined and deconfined chaos in classical spin systems

Weakly perturbed integrable many-body systems are typically chaotic, and thermal at late times. However, there are distinct relationships between the timescales for thermalization and chaos. The typical relationship is confined chaos: when trajectories are still confined to regions in phase space with constant conserved quantities (actions), the conjugate angle variables are already unstable. Chaotic instabilities thus far precede thermalization. In a different relationship, which we term deconfined chaos, chaotic instabilities and thermalization occur on the same timescale. We investigate these two qualitatively distinct scenarios through numerical and analytical studies of two perturbed integrable classical spin models: the Ishimori spin chain (confined chaos), and the central spin model with XX interactions (deconfined chaos). We analytically establish (super)-integrability in the latter model in a microcanonical shell. Deconfined chaos emerges through the separation of phase space into large quasi-integrable regions and a thin chaotic manifold. The latter leads to chaos and thermalization on the fastest possible timescale, which is proportional to the inverse perturbation strength. This behavior is reminiscent of the quantum SYK models and strange metals.

“Quantum Geometric Nesting” and Solvable Model Flat-Band Systems

We introduce the concept of “quantum geometric nesting” (QGN) to characterize the idealized ordering tendencies of certain flat-band systems implicit in the geometric structure of the flat-band subspace. Perfect QGN implies the existence of an infinite class of local interactions that can be explicitly constructed and give rise to solvable ground states with various forms of possible fermion bilinear order, including flavor ferromagnetism, density waves, and superconductivity. For the ideal Hamiltonians constructed in this way, we show that certain aspects of the low-energy spectrum can also be exactly computed including, in the superconducting case, the phase stiffness. Examples of perfect QGN include flat bands with certain symmetries (e.g., chiral or time reversal) and non-symmetry-related cases exemplified with an engineered model for pair-density wave. Extending this approach, we obtain exact superconducting ground states with nontrivial pairing symmetry. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Current algebra approach to two-dimensional interacting chiral metals

In this study, we reinterpret the chiral U(N) Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model at level k>1 in (1+1) dimensions as an interacting chiral metal in two space dimensions. In this reinterpretation, spatial translations along one of the spatial dimensions in the two-dimensional chiral metal arise from a generator of the U(N) symmetry of the WZW model. The WZW model at k=1 is equivalent to Balents and Fisher's free chiral metal. Here, the U(N) symmetry corresponds to the IR symmetry of a chiral Fermi gas with (half of a) Fermi surface, with N equal to the number of points on the Fermi surface. We argue that exactly solvable interacting generalizations occur for levels k>1. Importantly, these interacting chiral metals maintain the U(N) symmetry of the free system. We calculate two-point correlation functions of the single-particle fermion operator, the U⁡(1) number density, and current operators in these theories for general k. We find that interactions (k>1) produce 1/N corrections to scaling of the single-particle fermion operator as N→∞ and renormalize the amplitudes of the density and current two-point functions. This construction illustrates the ersatz Fermi liquid proposal of Else et al.

Solvable 3D Kondo Lattice Exhibiting Pair Density Wave, Odd-Frequency Pairing, and Order Fractionalization

The Kondo lattice model plays a key role in our understanding of quantum materials, but a lack of small parameters has posed a long-standing problem. We present a 3 dimensional S= 1 2 Kondo lattice model describing a spin liquid within an electron sea. Strong correlations in the spin liquid are treated exactly, enabling a controlled analytical approach. Like a Peierls or BCS phase, a logarithmically divergent susceptibility leads to an instability into a new phase at arbitrarily small Kondo coupling. Our solution captures a plethora of emergent phenomena, including odd-frequency pairing, pair density wave formation and order fractionalization. The ground-state state is a pair density wave with a fractionalized charge e, S = 1/2 order parameter, formed between electrons and Majorana fermions.

Variational neural network approach to QFT in the field basis

We present a variational neural network approach for solving quantum field theories in the field basis, focusing on the free Klein-Gordon model formulated in momentum space. While recent studies have explored neural-network-based variational methods for scalar field theory in position space, a systematic benchmark of the analytically solvable Klein-Gordon ground state—particularly in the momentum-space field basis—has been lacking. In this work, we represent the ground-state wavefunctional as a neural network defined on a discretized set of field configurations and train it by minimizing the Hamiltonian expectation value. This framework enables direct comparison to exact analytic results for a range of key observables, including the ground-state energy, two-point correlators, expectation value of the field, and the structure of the learned wavefunctional itself. Our results provide quantitative diagnostics of accuracy and establish a validated foundation for extending neural-network wavefunctional methods to interacting field theories and position-space formulations.
