19.28% Efficiency and Stable Polymer Solar Cells Enabled by Introducing an NIR–Absorbing Guest Acceptor

Here, a near-infrared (NIR)-absorbing small-molecule acceptor (SMA) Y-SeNF with strong intermolecular interaction and crystallinity is developed by combining selenophene-fused core with naphthalene-containing end-group, and then as a custom-tailor guest acceptor is incorporated into the binary PM6:L8-BO host system. Y-SeNF shows a 65 nm red-shifted absorption compared to L8-BO. Thanks to the strong crystallinity and intermolecular interaction of Y-SeNF, the morphology of PM6:L8-BO:Y-SeNF can be precisely regulated by introducing Y-SeNF, achieving improved charge-transporting and suppressed non-radiative energy loss. Consequently, ternary polymer solar cells (PSCs) offer an impressive device efficiency of 19.28% with both high photovoltage (0.873 V) and photocurrent (27.88 mA cm –2 ), which is one of the highest efficiencies in reported single-junction PSCs. Notably, ternary PSC has excellent stability under maximum-power-point tracking for even over 200 h, which is better than its parental binary devices. The study provides a novel strategy to construct NIR-absorbing SMA for efficient and stable PSCs toward practical applications.

Removing Fluoride from Double Four-Membered Rings Yielding Defect-Free Zeolites under Mild Conditions Using Ozone

We have investigated ozone treatment of as-made LTA zeolites under mild temperature conditions (175 °C) using experiments and periodic DFT as a method of energy savings and engineering defects such as silanol nests in comparison with conventional calcination at 550 °C. We have studied ozone treatment on LTA samples synthesized with 1,2-dimethyl-3-(4-methylbenzyl) imidazolium (denoted as “BULKY”) as the primary organic structure-directing agent (OSDA) and with various amounts of tetramethylammonium (TMA) as a secondary OSDA. Ozone treatment of LTA-BULKY at 175 °C was found to give defect-free, pristine LTA materials as determined by 29 Si NMR, 13 C NMR, Raman spectra, and DFT to assign the spectra. This represents a significant and unexpected finding: that fluoride ions can be completely removed from double four-membered rings (D4Rs) under such mild conditions. Furthermore, ozone treatment of LTA-BULKY-TMA samples removed BULKY but left behind TMA/F, giving a new and more diverse structural landscape of Si environments in LTA. Ab initio MetaDynamics calculations provide pathways with relatively low barriers, explaining how fluoride ions can be removed from D4Rs, leaving behind defect-free LTA materials under mild conditions.

MEASUR - Manufacturing Energy Assessment Software for Utility Reduction

MEASUR your energy savings with the free DOE MEASUR software The Department of Energy (DOE), with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), released version 1.0 of their energy efficiency software tool MEASUR (Manufacturing Energy Assessment Software for Utility Reduction). MEASUR has been available for several years as a beta version, being tested by industry experts and real users, and will continue to be updated and improved in the coming years. It is an integrated suite of tools to aid manufacturers in improving the efficiency of energy systems and equipment within a plant, including motors, pumps, fans, process heating, steam, and compressed air. Additionally, there are modules for wastewater energy analysis and to help perform energy treasure hunts. Several calculators are also included, allowing users to independently perform smaller calculations and analyses (such as estimating pump head, performing a fan traverse analysis, estimating waste heat recovery potential, and cataloging compressed air leaks). The MEASUR modules are based on previous DOE software tools that have been used by industry since the early 2000s (such as MotorMaster, AirMaster+, PSAT, PHAST, and FSAT). The original tools only ran on Windows operating systems, and by Windows 10, most of them were inoperable. DOE started their energy efficiency software tool revitalization effort in 2016, first with PSAT (for pumps), then began to integrate the other tools and expand their functionality and utility. The new MEASUR suite provides an extensively more user-friendly, modern, and versatile set of tools. All the assessment modules and most of the calculators have several visual components and graphs and detailed help text for every user input. To help reach international users, the tool utilizes Google translate and users can easily change unit systems, even converting existing user inputs if desired. The assessment files can be organized within the internal file system and easily shared to other users, regardless of their operating system. The entire suite is free, open-source, and can be downloaded on Windows, Mac, or Linux operating systems.

Comparative Studies of Optoelectrical Properties of Prominent PV Materials: Halide Perovskite, CdTe, and GaAs

We compare three representative high performance PV materials: halide perovskite MAPbI3, CdTe, and GaAs, in terms of photoluminescence (PL) efficiency, PL lineshape, carrier diffusion, and surface recombination and passivation, over multiple orders of photo-excitation density or carrier density appropriate for different applications. An analytic model is used to describe the excitation density dependence of PL intensity and extract the internal PL efficiency and multiple pertinent recombination parameters. A PL imaging technique is used to obtain carrier diffusion length without using a PL quencher, thus, free of unintended influence beyond pure diffusion. Our results show that perovskite samples tend to exhibit lower Shockley-Read-Hall (SRH) recombination rate in both bulk and surface, thus higher PL efficiency than the inorganic counterparts, particularly under low excitation density, even with no or preliminary surface passivation. PL lineshape and diffusion analysis indicate that there is considerable structural disordering in the perovskite materials, and thus photo-generated carriers are not in global thermal equilibrium, which in turn suppresses the nonradiative recombination. This study suggests that relatively low point-defect density, less detrimental surface recombination, and moderate structural disordering contribute to the high PV efficiency in the perovskite. This comparative photovoltaics study provides more insights into the fundamental material science and the search for optimal device designs by learning from different technologies.

Chemical and steric effects in simulating noncontact atomic force microscopy images of organic molecules on a Cu (111) substrate

Noncontact mode of atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) employing a CO-functionalized tip is a very powerful tool for studying molecular structures. However, interpreting nc-AFM images for nonplanar molecules can sometimes be problematic. To illustrate and resolve the nature of such problematic systems, we employ real-space pseudopotentials constructed within density functional theory to simulate nc-AFM images. In this work, we focus on several representative nonplanar organic molecules (pentacene, naphthanthrone, olympicene, and 6-phenylhexa-1,3,5-triynybenzene (PHTB)) on a typical substrate: the Cu (111) surface. This substrate results in significant distortions in the molecular geometries of pentacene and naphthanthrone. Including these distortions in simulated nc-AFM imaging notably improves the agreement between the simulated and measured images. In naphthanthrone, the relatively large interaction between the O atom and the Cu substrate offers a straightforward explanation for the absence of the C = O bond in the measured image. Nonplanar features such as tilting or twisting are also apparent in olympicene and PHTB. A “triangular” bright feature associated with the –CH 2 group in olympicene appears in simulated and measured nc-AFM images. This feature is directly related to the tilting angle of the molecule with respect to the Cu substrate. The “defective” benzene ring feature and the faint ellipsoidal C ≡ C feature in PHTB can be ascribed to its twisted nature. The ability to simulate such subatomic images in nc-AFM reflects the accuracy and efficiency of calculating quantum forces in real space.

Modeling impacts of ice-nucleating particles from marine aerosols on mixed-phase orographic clouds during 2015 ACAPEX field campaign

Abstract. A large fraction of annual precipitation over the western United States comes from wintertime orographic clouds associated with atmospheric rivers (ARs). Transported African and Asian dust and marine aerosols from the Pacific Ocean may act as ice-nucleating particles (INPs) to affect cloud and precipitation properties over the region. Here we explored the effects of INPs from marine aerosols on orographic mixed-phase clouds and precipitation at different AR stages for an AR event observed during the 2015 ACAPEX field campaign under low dust (<0.02 cm−3) conditions. Simulations were conducted using the chemistry version of the Weather Research and Forecasting Model coupled with the spectral-bin microphysics at 1 km grid spacing, with ice nucleation connected with dust and marine aerosols. By comparing against airborne and ground-based observations, accounting for marine INP effects improves the simulation of AR-precipitation. The marine INPs enhance the formation of ice and snow, leading to less shallow warm clouds but more mixed-phase and deep clouds, as well as to a large spillover effect of precipitation after AR landfall. The responses of cloud and precipitation to marine INPs vary with the AR stages, with more significant effects before AR landfall and post-AR than after AR landfall, mainly because the moisture and temperature conditions change with the AR evolution. This work suggests weather and climate models need to consider the impacts of marine INPs since their contribution is notable under low dust conditions despite the much lower relative ice nucleation efficiency of marine INPs.

A Dual-Mode Hybrid System Combining Solar Thermal With Pumped Thermal Energy Storage

A hybrid system that delivers renewable electricity generation and electricity storage capabilities is introduced. This dual-mode hybrid system is based on Pumped Thermal Energy Storage (PTES) which uses a heat pump to convert electricity into thermal energy that is trans-ferred to silica particles which are stored in concrete silos. The stored heat is later converted back to electricity in a heat engine. The heat pump and heat engine use a closed Joule-Brayton cycle and fluidized bed heat exchangers. If the PTES system is co-located with an array of concentrating solar mirrors and a particle receiver, then the silica particles may also be heated up by the concentrating solar power (CSP) system. The PTES heat engine may also be used to convert the stored solar heat into electricity, thereby sharing this system between the PTES and CSP systems and reducing costs. However, this requires careful management of the heat engine off-design parameters. A thermodynamic model is used to evaluate the performance of the dual mode PTES-CSP hybrid system. The model accounts for turbomachinery effi-ciency, and approach temperature and pressure loss in heat exchangers, as well as other sources of inefficiency, such as motor-generator losses, and air fan power. The hybrid system also requires the evaluation of the turbomachinery efficiency and pressure ratio at off-design conditions since the CSP system operates over different temperature ratios than the Carnot Battery. Several design variables and design modifications are investigated, such as pressure ratios and maximum temperatures.

Correlation of Dimer-Linker-Induced Conformational Lock with Nonradiative Energy Loss in Organic Solar Cells

The efficiencies of dimer-based devices still lag those of their small molecule-based counterparts. This is primarily due to the considerable dihedrals in the dimer skeleton, which compromises the molecular packing, thus influencing the charge generation and nonradiative voltage loss (ΔV oc,nr ). Herein, we developed two dimeric acceptors with varied π-linkers to investigate the influence of linker-induced conformational lock on ΔV oc,nr . We find that the helically lapped O-shaped dimer delivers better intermolecular packing than the planar S-shaped one that incorporates a bulkier π-linker. However, its planar skeleton is instead more favorable for forming a compact and ordered stacking with the host acceptor in ternary blend. This possibly promotes exciton dissociation, thus reducing the nonradiative decay of excited states. Moreover, its longer exciton lifetime could offer additional charge-transfer channels. Finally, these contributions effectively minimize ΔV oc,nr to 0.195 eV, while delivering a high efficiency approaching 20% in the derived ternary device.

Siloxane-functional small molecule acceptor for high-performance organic solar cells with 16.6% efficiency

As one of the simple but most effective molecular design strategies, side-chain engineering has been widely employed to modify the photoelectric properties of active layer materials for boosting the photovoltaic performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). In this work, a functionalized small molecule acceptor (SMA) named BTSi-4F with a bulky siloxane-terminated solubilizing group as side-chains, derived from a classical SMA of Y6, was designed and synthesized. The results demonstrate that the introduction of siloxane-functional terminated groups into SMA not only affects the optical absorption and molecular energy levels, but also regulates the miscibility between the polymer donor and SMA. Compared to the original Y6, BTSi-4F exhibits a better solubility, upshifted lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level, more ordered molecular packing, and higher electron-mobility. Matched with a wide bandgap polymer donor PM6, the chlorobenzene-processed OSCs based on PM6:BTSi-4F achieved a superior power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.6% with both high open-circuit voltage (V oc ) of 0.90 V and high fill factor (FF) of 0.77, while the devices based on PM6:Y6 obtained a much lower PCE of 13.0% with a V oc of 0.81 V and FF of 0.69 under the same conditions. This work offers a promising molecular design strategy of siloxane-terminated side chain engineering to develop high-performance SMAs for efficient OSCs.

Multistage Stochastic optimization for mid-term integrated generation and maintenance scheduling of cascaded hydroelectric system with renewable energy uncertainty

The uncertainties resulting from the escalating penetration of renewable energy resources pose severe challenges to the efficient operation of modern power systems. Hydroelectricity is characterized by its flexibility, controllability, and reliability, and thus becomes one of the most ideal energy resources to hedge against such uncertainties. This paper studies the mid-term integrated generation and maintenance scheduling of a cascaded hydroelectric system (CHS) consisting of multiple cascaded reservoirs and hydroelectric units. To precisely describe the mid-term water regulation policies, the hydraulic coupling relationship and water-energy nexus of CHS are incorporated into the proposed optimization model. The uncertainties of natural water inflow and the power outputs of wind/solar energy generation are taken into consideration and captured via a stochastic process modeled by a scenario tree. A multistage stochastic optimization (MSO) approach is developed to coordinate the complementary operations of multiple energy resources, by optimizing the mid-term water resource management, generation scheduling, and maintenance scheduling of CHS. The proposed MSO model is formulated as a large-scale mixed-integer linear program that presents significant computational intractability. To address this issue, a tailored Benders decomposition algorithm is developed. Two real-world case studies are conducted to demonstrate the capability and characteristics of the proposed model and algorithm. The computational results show that the proposed MSO model can exploit the flexibility of hydroelectricity to efficiently respond to variable wind and solar power, and reserve water resources for the generation in peak months to reduce the consumption of fossil fuel. Furthermore, the proposed solution approach also exhibits promising computational efficiency when handling large-scale models.

Thermodynamic limits for simultaneous energy harvesting from the hot sun and cold outer space

The sun and outer space are two of the most important fundamental thermodynamic resources for renewable energy harvesting. A significant amount of work has focused on understanding the fundamental limit of energy harvesting from the sun. More recently, there have been several theoretical analyses of the fundamental limit of energy harvesting from outer space. However, far less is understood about the fundamental limits of simultaneous energy harvesting from both the sun and outer space. Here, we consider and introduce various schemes that are capable of simultaneous energy harvesting and elucidate the fundamental thermodynamic limits of these schemes. We show that the theoretical limits can far exceed the previously established limit associated with utilizing only one thermodynamic resource. Our results highlight the significant potential of simultaneous energy harvesting and indicate new fundamental opportunities for improving the efficiency of energy harvesting systems.

A de novo sacrificial-MOF strategy to construct enhanced-flux nanofiltration membranes for efficient dye removal

Nanofiltration membanes play a critical role in alleviating global water scarcity, affecting more than 4 billion people. Here, a new metal organic framework (MOF) sacrificicial strategy is designed to synthesize flux-enhancing nanofiltration membrane for efficient dye removal. With the aid of polyphenol chemistry, ZIF-67 MOF was first coated onto a porous support and in situ transformed into a selective layer by virtue of pyrrole polymerization. Trigerred by ammonium persulfate, polypyrrole selective layer functioalized nanofiltration membrane was fabricated when accompanying pore regulation by MOF self-sacrifice. The membrane demonstrated a flux enhancement of 745% than pristine polypyrrole (PPy) one with maintained rejection. Furthermore, the synergistic interactions among polypyrrole, polyphenol, and porous support endowed membrane with excellent stability during long term test. The designed MOF sacrificed route may open a new avenue for fabricating advanced energetic-efficient membranes with the reconstructed architecture towards diverse separation applications.

Phase Discovery and Selected Synthesis of Subvalent Niobium Tellurides Using a Polytelluride Flux Strategy

Transition metal subchalcogenides involve electron-rich metals and can facilitate an in-depth understanding of the relationships among quantum properties such as superconductivity, charge density wave, and topological band structures. However, effective experimental routes toward synthesizing transition metal subchalcogenides are still lacking, hindering the development of new quantum materials. Herein, we propose a eutectic polytelluride flux strategy as an excellent solution to address phase discovery and crystal growth in transition metal subtelluride systems. We report new phases easily and selectively synthesized using a eutectic “K 3 Te 4 ” polytelluride flux upon adjusting the ratio of Nb metal to flux in the starting materials (K/Nb/Te = 3:x:4). Using a high Nb content in the solvent (x = 2 and 1), crystals of KNb 3 Te 3 O 0.38 and K 0.9 Nb 3 Te 4 are obtained. Both subtellurides exhibit diverse Nb clusters, including face-sharing and edge-sharing Nb 6 octahedral columns and zig-zag Nb chains. Reducing the Nb content to x = 0.33 leads to the formation of a layered compound, K 1.06 NbTe 2 . This compound comprises a NbTe 6 trigonal prism with K intercalated between the layers. Single crystals of known binary Nb tellurides can also be grown using another eutectic flux “KTe 3 . 2 ”, and the obtained NbTe 2 exhibits a new polymorphism with extra trimerization along the b-axis in the Nb–Nb bonded double zig-zag cluster. Finally, precise control over the structural dimensionality and oxidation state, combined with the facile crystal growth process, makes our synthetic strategy an efficient route to explore quantum materials in transition metal subchalcogenides.
