Fragility of the nematic spin liquid induced by diagonal couplings in the square-lattice SU(3) model

Here, we present a large-scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study of the spin-1 SU(3) bilinear-biquadratic model on the square lattice, which was suggested to host a nematic spin liquid state in recent DMRG calculations. We report that this spin liquid appears to strongly compete with a three-sublattice magnetic order. To further study the competition between the two states, and the reason of the emergent nematic spin liquid, we included an additional next-nearest-neighbor SU(3) symmetric interactions along one of the two plaquette diagonal directions. This allows to tune the square-lattice model to the triangular-lattice model. By computing spin correlation functions and various order parameters, we find that the three-sublattice order may develop at infinitesimal additional new coupling, at least within the precision of our study. Compared with the previous findings that the nematic spin liquid is stable in extended parameter regions with additional couplings that respect the lattice symmetries of the square lattice, we argue that here the diagonal couplings, which frustrate the bipartite-lattice structure, rapidly suppress the two-sublattice fluctuations and the three-sublattice order thus wins. This numerical result is consistent with the conjecture that the nematic spin liquid emerges from the competition between two- and three-sublattice fluctuations.

Effect of Ni substitution on the fragile magnetic system La 5 Co 2 Ge 3

La 5⁢ Co 2 ⁢Ge 3 is an itinerant ferromagnet with a Curie temperature T C of ~3.8K and a remarkably small saturated moment of 0.1µ B /Co. Here we present the growth and characterization of single crystals of the La 5 ⁢(Co 1–x⁢ Ni x ) 2 Ge 3 series for 0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.186. Here we measured powder x-ray diffraction, composition as well as anisotropic temperature-dependent resistivity, temperature and field-dependent magnetization along with heat capacity on these single crystals. We also measured muon-spin rotation/relaxation (μ⁢SR) for some Ni substitutions (x = 0.027,0.036,0.074) to study the evolution of internal field with Ni substitution. Using the measured data we infer a low temperature, transition temperature-composition phase diagram for La 5 ⁢(Co 1–x ⁢Ni x ) 2 Ge 3 . We find that T C is suppressed for low dopings, x ≤ 0.014; whereas for 0.036 ≤ x ≤ 0.186, the samples are antiferromagnetic with a Néel temperature T N that goes through a weak and shallow maximum (T N ~ 3.4K for x~0.07) and then gradually decreases to 2.4 K by x = 0.186. For intermediate Ni substitutions, 0.016 ≤ x ≤ 0.027, two transition temperatures are inferred with T N >T C . Whereas the T–x phase diagram for La 5 ⁢(Co 1–x ⁢Ni x ) 2 Ge 3 and the T–p phase diagram determined for the parent La 5 ⁢Co 2 ⁢Ge 3 under hydrostatic pressure are grossly similar, changing from a low-doping or low-pressure ferromagnetic (FM) ground state to a high-doped or high-pressure antiferromagnetic (AFM) state, perturbation by Ni substitution enabled us to identify an intermediate doping regime where both FM and AFM transitions occur.

Fragile 3D Order in V 1 - x Mo x O 2

The metal-to-insulator transition in rutile VO2 has proven uniquely difficult to characterize because of the complex interplay between electron correlations and atomic structure. Here, we report the discovery of the sudden collapse of three-dimensional order in the low-temperature phase of V1-xMoxO2 at x = 0.17 and the emergence of a novel frustrated two-dimensional order at x = 0.19, with only a slight change in electronic properties. Single crystal diffuse x-ray scattering reveals that this transition from the 3D M1 phase to a 2D variant of the M2 phase results in long-range structural correlations along symmetry-equivalent (11L) planes of the tetragonal rutile structure, yet extremely short-range correlations transverse to these planes. These findings suggest that this two dimensionality results from a novel form of geometric frustration that is essentially structural in origin.

symfind : Addressing the Fragility of Subhalo Finders and Revealing the Durability of Subhalos

Abstract A major question in ΛCDM is what this theory actually predicts for the properties of subhalo populations. Subhalos are difficult to accurately simulate and to find within simulations, and this propagates into uncertainty in theoretical predictions for satellite galaxies. We present Symfind , a new particle-tracking-based subhalo finder, and demonstrate that it can track subhalos to orders-of-magnitude lower masses than commonly used halo-finding tools, with a focus on Rockstar and consistent-trees . These longer survival times mean that at a fixed peak subhalo mass, we find ≈ 15%–40% more subhalos within the virial radius, R vir , and ≈35%–120% more subhalos within R vir /4 in the Symphony dark-matter-only simulation suite. More subhalos are found as the resolution is increased, in contrast to the Rockstar halo finder, which appears to be converged at smaller subhalo counts. We perform extensive numerical testing. In agreement with idealized simulations, we show that the v max , the maximum circular velocity, is systematically biased low until high resolutions ( n peak ≳ 3 × 10 4 ) are achieved, but that mass loss itself can be resolved at much more modest resolutions ( n peak ≳ 4 × 10 3 ). We show that Rockstar converges to false solutions for the mass function, radial distribution, and disruption masses of subhalos. We argue that our new method can trace resolved subhalos until the point of typical galaxy disruption without invoking post hoc orphan modeling. We outline a concrete set of steps for determining whether other subhalo finders meet the same criteria. We publicly release Symfind catalogs and particle data for the Symphony simulation suite at http://web.stanford.edu/group/gfc/symphony .

Stratospheric ozone - Fragile shield

Atmospheric models that have been used in major studies on the possible impact of SST exhausts and Freons on stratospheric ozone are discussed and compared. An overview is given of ozone-reduction estimates that they produce, together with an assessment of possible effects of atmospheric testing of thermonuclear bombs in an attempt to find direct observational evidence for ozone depletion resulting from human activities. It is concluded that clear validation of atmospheric-model predictions is lacking.

Fastener for thin fragile materials

Two-piece fastener is ideal for securing thin delicate parts that might be damaged by conventional fasteners, such as rivets or upset collars. Strength of new fastener approaches that of riveted connection. Easily fabricated, fastener consists of plastic button and spring-steel collar. Parts have large contact area to distribute loads on delicate assemblies and low profile so that they fit into narrow spaces. Fastener is suitable for materials ranging in density from sheet metal to fabric sandwiches.
