Field-free topological behavior in the magnetic domain wall of ferrimagnetic GdFeCo

Exploring and controlling topological textures such as merons and skyrmions has attracted enormous interests from the perspective of fundamental research and spintronic applications. It has been predicted theoretically and proved experimentally that the lattice form of topological meron-skyrmion transformation can be realized with the requirement of external magnetic fields in chiral ferromagnets. However, such topological transition behavior has yet to be verified in other materials. Here, we report real-space observation of magnetic topology transformation between meron pairs and skyrmions in the localized domain wall of ferrimagnetic GdFeCo films without the need of magnetic fields. The topological transformation in the domain wall of ferrimagnet is introduced by temperature-induced spin reorientation transition (SRT) and the underlying mechanism is revealed by micromagnetic simulations. The convenient electric-controlling topology transformation and driving motion along the confined domain wall is further anticipated, which will enable advanced application in magnetic devices.

Topological constraints and the existence of force-free fields

A fundamental problem in plasma theory is the question of the existence of MHD equilibria. The issue of topological constraints is of crucial importance for the problem of the existence of equilibria. Heuristic methods are used to discuss the coronal wrapping pattern. It is concluded that for a given set of footpoint positions the wrapping pattern in the corona is completely fixed. The topological constraints are included in the boundary conditions on the Euler potentials and impost no additional restrictions on possible equilibria. Although this does not prove that equilibria always exist, it does show that the force-free problem is not overdetermined and that existence of equilibria is still an open question.

Free-field Ground Motion Induced by Underground Explosions at Aqueduct Mesa with Predictions for Physical Experiment One (PE1)

We fit standard power-law models for ground acceleration and particle velocity using scaled ground motion observations from underground nuclear explosions at Aqueduct Mesa on the Nevada National Security Site. The models are then validated using small-scale high-explosive (HE) test data from nearby Rainier Mesa. The comparison between model predictions and observations is good and can be made more favorable if the assumed yield for the HE tests are doubled. Further validation is made with a numerical experiment that additionally shows a transition in ground motion attenuation to elastic propagation (1 = r). An extended model is provided to incorporate the long-range transition in attenuation, which results in increased ground motions at farther range. We then make predictions for the field experiment, Physical Experiment One (PE1), to take place in P-tunnel on Aqueduct Mesa, and suggest that the models could be used in planning various operations for PE1.

Free-field propagation of high intensity noise

Research on high intensity (finite amplitude) acoustic waves shows that nonlinear distortion effects generally result in a shift of energy to higher frequencies. The higher intensities associated with supersonic jets would therefore indicate that high frequency enhancement of the spectrum should occur, resulting in the differences observed between subsonic and supersonic jets. A 10,000 acoustic watt source installed in an anechoic chamber generates sound levels such that acoustic shocks are readily observable. Dual frequency excitation of the source produces a strong parametric effect with a difference frequency comparable in level to the primary frequency. The test set up and recording equipment being used to determine the finite amplitude noise representative of an actual supersonic jet are described as well as the development of a computer program based on Burger's equation. The spectra of 1/2 octave band, 1 kHz sine wave, and dual frequency input and output are presented in graphs along with waveforms at Z = .025, 0.1, and 1.0.

Transport properties of droplet clusters in gravity-free fields

Clusters of liquid droplets are suspended in an atmosphere of saturated vapor and are subjected to an external force field. This system can be modeled as a continuum whose macroscopic properties may be determined by applying the generalized theory of Taylor dispersion.

Free-field propagation of high intensity noise

Observed spectral data from supersonic jet aircraft are known to contain much more high frequency energy than can be explained by linear acoustic propagation theory. It is believed that the high frequency energy is an effect of nonlinear distortion due to the extremely high acoustic levels generated by the jet engines. The objective, to measure acoustic waveform distortion for spherically diverging high intensity noise, was reached by using an electropneumatic acoustic source capable of generating sound pressure levels in the range of 140 to 160 decibels (re 20 micro Pa). The noise spectrum was shaped to represent the spectra generated by jet engines. Two microphones were used to capture the acoustic pressure waveform at different points along the propagation path in order to provide a direct measure of the waveform distortion as well as spectral distortion. A secondary objective was to determine that the observed distortion is an acoustic effect. To do this an existing computer prediction code that deals with nonlinear acoustic propagation was used on data representative of the measured data. The results clearly demonstrate that high intensity jet noise does shift the energy in the spectrum to the higher frequencies along the propagation path. In addition, the data from the computer model are in good agreement with the measurements, thus demonstrating that the waveform distortion can be accounted for with nonlinear acoustic theory.

Euler potentials of current-free fields expressed in spherical harmonics

Given a magnetic field B = -del(vector differential operator)(sub gamma) with gamma expanded in spherical harmonics, it is shown that analytic Euler potentials may be derived for B if gamma is asymmetrical but contains only the contribution of a single index n. This work generalizes a result for sectorial harmonics with n = m, derived by Willis and Gardiner (1988).

A Review of Large Solid Rocket Motor Free Field Acoustics, Part I

At the ATK facility in Utah, large full scale solid rocket motors are tested. The largest is a five segment version of the Reusable Solid Rocket Motor, which is for use on future launch vehicles. Since 2006, Acoustic measurements have been taken on large solid rocket motors at ATK. Both the four segment RSRM and the five segment RSRMV have been instrumented. Measurements are used to update acoustic prediction models and to correlate against vibration responses of the motor. Presentation focuses on two major sections: Part I) Unique challenges associated with measuring rocket acoustics Part II) Acoustic measurements summary over past five years

Nonlinear force-free magnetic fields

The nonlinear properties of force-free magnetic fields are reviewed with particular reference to the mechanisms for the sudden release of stored energy in flares during the quasi-steady evolution of solar fields. It is shown that in the solar atmosphere, force-free fields with a nonconstant scalar function in the field equations are more likely to occur than those with a constant scalar function, and the nonlinear properties of these fields may give rise to many interesting physical effects. Consideration is then given to two possible mechanisms of field evolution: a model in which a force-free field in a medium of infinite electrical conductivity evolves in response to slowly changing boundary conditions brought about by photospheric motions in the solar active region, and a model in which a field in a medium of small finite electrical conductivity evolves in response to the slow Ohmic dissipation of the electric current.

Linear force-free magnetic fields for solar extrapolation and interpretation

This paper discusses the interconnection of the various linear force-free magnetic field formulations, the specific phenomenological and topological parameters of these formulations, and their usefulness. Particularly, the limitations and usefulness of linear force-free fields are discussed. Specific field configurations are related to magnetographic interpretation. The relationship of the integral and Fourier procedures is shown explicitly. The physical interpretation of linear force-free fields is shown by analytic models and from the Marshall Space Flight Center solar vector magnetograms.

Evolving force-free magnetic fields. III - States of nonequilibrium and the preflare stage

The paper considers whether a neighboring magnetostatic equilibrium exists to allow a magnetic field initially in a force-free configuration to accommodate any imposed weak pressure. The following problem is treated. The foot points of the field are fixed and the plasma is frozen into the field lines under the approximation of infinite electrical conductivity. A weak pressure is introduced. It is determined infinitesimal plasma displacements exist to adjust the field lines to a new equilibrium without changing the field line connectivity. The analysis is carried out for the bipolar force-free fields forming one of two evolutionary sequences modeling the development of the preflare stage. It was found that for the force-free field corresponding to the quasi-static stage of evolution, the neighboring magnetostatic equilibrium always exists and the imposed gas pressure can be accommodated with a slight departure of the field from being exactly force free.

Nonlinear force-free magnetic fields: Calculation and applicatin to astrophysics

The problem concerned in this work is that of calculating magnetic field configurations in which the Lorentz force (vector)j x (vector)B is everywhere zero, subject to specified boundary conditions. The magnetic field is represented in terms of Clebsch variables in the form (vector)B = del alpha x del beta. These variables are constant on any field line. The most appropriate choice of boundary conditions is to specify the values of alpha and beta on the bounding surface. It is proposed that the field lines move in the direction of local Lorentz force and relax towards a force-free field configuration. This concept leads to an iteration procedure for modifying the variables alpha and beta that tends asymptotically towards the force-free state. This method is first applied to a simple problem in two rectangular dimensions; the calculation shows that the convergence of magnetic field energy to a minimum state (force-free) is close to exponential. This method is then applied to study some astrophysical force-free magnetic fields, such as the structures and evolution of magnetic fields of rotating sunspots and accretion disks. The implication of the results, as related to the mechanisms of solar flares, extragalactic radio sources and radio jets, are discussed.
