Precision Tomography of a Three-Qubit Donor Quantum Processor in Silicon

Nuclear spins were among the first physical platforms to be considered for quantum information processing, because of their exceptional quantum coherence and atomic-scale footprint. However, their full potential for quantum computing has not yet been realized, owing to the lack of methods with which to link nuclear qubits within a scalable device combined with multi-qubit operations with sufficient fidelity to sustain fault-tolerant quantum computation. Here we demonstrate universal quantum logic operations using a pair of ion-implanted 31 P donor nuclei in a silicon nanoelectronic device. A nuclear two-qubit controlled-Z gate is obtained by imparting a geometric phase to a shared electron spin, and used to prepare entangled Bell states with fidelities up to 94.2(2.7)%. The quantum operations are precisely characterized using gate set tomography (GST), yielding one-qubit average gate fidelities up to 99.95(2)%, two-qubit average gate fidelity of 99.37(11)% and two-qubit preparation/measurement fidelities of 98.95(4)%. These three metrics indicate that nuclear spins in silicon are approaching the performance demanded in fault-tolerant quantum processors. We then demonstrate entanglement between the two nuclei and the shared electron by producing a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger three-qubit state with 92.5(1.0)% fidelity. Because electron spin qubits in semiconductors can be further coupled to other electrons or physically shuttled across different locations, these results establish a viable route for scalable quantum information processing using donor nuclear and electron spins.

Non-adiabatic quantum interference and complex formation in ultracold collisions of Rb with KRb

Ultracold elastic collisions of 87 Rb with 40 K 87 Rb in its ground vibrational and rotational state are investigated using a first principles based theoretical methodology. Full-dimensional ab initio computed potential energy surfaces are reported that include the two lowest-lying electronic states, their conical intersection, non-adiabatic couplings and an accurate long-range behavior. A numerically exact time-independent quantum dynamics method in hyperspherical coordinates is used to compute the elastic scattering cross sections, rate coefficients and collision lifetime spectrum. The quantum scattering calculations include all degrees of freedom and treat both electronic states and their non-adiabatic couplings using a two-state diabatic representation. The theoretically computed elastic rate coefficient is in good agreement with the recently reported experimental value. Significant non-adiabatic quantum interference effects are shown to originate from the unique properties of ultracold collisions and the geometric phase associated with the conical intersection. A high-resolution collision energy grid is used to investigate the origin of the experimentally reported long-lived 3-body collision complexes.

Heavy ion irradiation induced failure of gallium nitride high electron mobility transistors: effects of in-situ biasing

Abstract While radiation is known to degrade AlGaN/GaN high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs), the question remains on the extent of damage governed by the presence of an electrical field in the device. In this study, we induced displacement damage in HEMTs in both ON and OFF states by irradiating with 2.8 MeV Au 4+ ion to fluence levels ranging from 1.72 × 10 10 to 3.745 × 10 13 ions cm −2 , or 0.001–2 displacement per atom (dpa). Electrical measurement is done in situ , and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive x-ray (EDX), geometrical phase analysis (GPA), and micro-Raman are performed on the highest fluence of Au 4+ irradiated devices. The selected heavy ion irradiation causes cascade damage in the passivation, AlGaN, and GaN layers and at all associated interfaces. After just 0.1 dpa, the current density in the ON-mode device deteriorates by two orders of magnitude, whereas the OFF-mode device totally ceases to operate. Moreover, six orders of magnitude increase in leakage current and loss of gate control over the 2-dimensional electron gas channel are observed. GPA and Raman analysis reveal strain relaxation after a 2 dpa damage level in devices. Significant defects and intermixing of atoms near AlGaN/GaN interfaces and GaN layer are found from HRTEM and EDX analyses, which can substantially alter device characteristics and result in complete failure.

Comprehensive symmetric-hybrid ring design for a proton EDM experiment at below 10 –29 e · cm

A concise demonstrative summary of the Symmetric Hybrid ring design for the storage ring proton electric dipole moment experiment is presented. In this paper, critical issues such as lattice design, background electrical fields, geometrical phase, general relativity, spin coherence time and polarimeter systematics are presented. Overall, we find that with the currently proposed design iteration, systematic error sources are reduced by orders of magnitude and that the ring alignment requirements are within the currently available technology.

High-Fidelity Bell-State Preparation with 40 Ca + Optical Qubits

Entanglement generation in trapped-ion systems has relied thus far on two distinct but related geometric phase gate techniques: Mølmer-Sørensen and light-shift gates. We recently proposed a variant of the light-shift scheme where the qubit levels are separated by an optical frequency [B. C. Sawyer and K. R. Brown, Phys. Rev. A 103, 022427 (2021)]. Here, in this study, we report an experimental demonstration of this entangling gate using a pair of 40 Ca + ions in a cryogenic surface-electrode ion trap and a commercial, high-power, 532 nm Nd:YAG laser. Generating a Bell state in 35 μs, we directly measure an infidelity of 6(3) × 10 −4 without subtraction of experimental errors. The 532 nm gate laser wavelength suppresses intrinsic photon scattering error to ∼1 × 10 −5 .

Braiding of Majorana zero modes in vortex cores

Here, we demonstrate the successful simulation of $\sqrt{𝑍-}$, $\sqrt{𝑋-}$, and 𝑋-quantum gates using Majorana zero modes (MZMs) that emerge in magnetic vortices located in topological superconductors. We compute the transition probabilities and geometric phase differences accounting for the full many-body dynamics and show that qubit states can be read out by fusing the vortex core MZMs and measuring the resulting charge density. We visualize the gate processes using the time- and energy-dependent nonequilibrium local density of states. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of employing vortex core MZMs for the realization of fault-tolerant topological quantum computing.

Nonlocal Metasurface with Resonance-Selective Nonlinear Wavefront Shaping

We demonstrate a nonlinear nonlocal metasurface supporting quasi-trapped modes that enable helicity-dependent wavefront shaping at third-harmonic wavelengths. The geometric phase is selectively modified near resonance, revealing a mechanism for polarization-dependent nonlinear phase control.

A Multi-Qubit Quantum Gate Using the Zeno Effect

The Zeno effect, in which repeated observation freezes the dynamics of a quantum system, stands as an iconic oddity of quantum mechanics. When a measurement is unable to distinguish between states in a subspace, the dynamics within that subspace can be profoundly altered, leading to non-trivial behavior. Here we show that such a measurement can turn a non-interacting system with only single-qubit control into a two- or multi-qubit entangling gate, which we call a Zeno gate. The gate works by imparting a geometric phase on the system, conditioned on it lying within a particular nonlocal subspace. We derive simple closed-form expressions for the gate fidelity under a number of non-idealities and show that the gate is viable for implementation in circuit and cavity QED systems. More specifically, we illustrate the functioning of the gate via dispersive readout in both the Markovian and non-Markovian readout regimes, and derive conditions for longitudinal readout to ideally realize the gate.

Interpretation of whole-disk photometry of Phobos and Deimos

Small scale surface features of the moons Deimos and Phobos were studied using star tracker observations made by the Mariner 9 and Viking orbiters. The whole-disk brightness/solar phase angle phase curves were developed out to a phase angle of 125 deg. An analysis was undertaken according to Lumme-Bowell theory to obtain accurate phase integrals zero-phase geometric albedos, and Bond albedos. The microstructural and particulate surface properties of the two moons were found to be very similar, as were the whole-body densities and the microphysical makeup, thereby suggesting a common origin. However, the presence of streamers on Deimos and the relatively smooth surfaces of both moons indicates a long-term influence of Mars producing surface morphologies different from what would occur with asteroids.

Rotational excitation of H2 in collision with H

Rate coefficients for the reactive processes of ortho-para conversion in which the j = 0 rotational level of molecular hydrogen is excited to the j = 1 and j = 3 level by impacts with hydrogen atoms are calculated for temperatures between 30 K and 1000 K using a fully converged complete close-coupled method. Rate coefficients are also obtained for the excitation from the j = 0 to the j = 2 rotational level and from the j = 1 to the j = 3 rotational level. The interference between the direct and reactive channels is taken into account as is the geometric phase resulting from the adiabatic separation of electronic and nuclear motion that generates the potential energy surface. Convenient analytic representations of the rate coefficients are presented.

Anomalous Symmetries Of The Rovibrational Levels of HO2: Consequences Of A Conical Intersection

We show that the geometric phase arising from a conical intersection of the lowest potential energy surfaces of HO2 causes its bending vibrational wavefunctions to be double valued, which allows them to be locally symmetric on one side of the intersection and locally antisymmetric on the other. The material of the proposed publication was reviewed and the technical content will not reveal any information not already in the public domain and will not give any foreign industry or government a competitive advantage.

Structural Manipulation of Phase Transitions by Self‐Induced Strain in Geometrically Confined Thin Films

Strain engineering is a well-known method often used to tune material properties in thin films. The most studied sources of strain are lattice mismatch and differential thermal contraction between the substrate and film. However, in materials which undergo a structural phase transition (SPT), a third and often overlooked source of strain may play a very significant role. If the substrate confines the area of the film, the SPT may induce stress which changes the evolution of the transition. This is a 2D analog of the isochoric phase transition between water and ice, where the freezing point drops below 0 °C. To illustrate this, the prototypical Mott insulator V 2 O 3 which has an SPT coupled to a metal–insulator transition is used to show how self-induced strain can drastically alter structural and electronic properties. This effect provides an elegant approach for mapping the phase diagram of the SPT and the transitions coupled to it. Moreover, the magnitude of self-straining is tunable by modifying the substrate morphology. Furthermore, this effect may be important for numerous materials which exhibit an SPT and are subjected to geometrical constraints.

Growth Strategy of a Hybrid Yb3Rh4Sn13/LaRuSn3 Structure Type: Integrating Thermal Analysis, In Situ Diffraction, and Geometric Descriptors

Remeika phases form a versatile family of cage like intermetallics built from transition metal–centered trigonal prisms linked into three dimensional frameworks that generate two characteristic voids: a large [AX₁₂] cuboctahedral cage hosting the rare earth ion and an [XX′₁₂] icosahedral cage accommodating the tetrel atom. In this work, we present a tool driven approach for targeted solid state synthesis of Remeika phases, integrating differential scanning calorimetry, in situ neutron diffraction, and a geometric tolerance factor that quantifies rare earth size compatibility within these polyhedral cages. When combined with arc melting and metallic flux crystal growth, this framework enables prediction, verification, and isolation of specific Remeika phases. Applying this strategy, we obtain single crystals of the predicted pseudo-perovskite Fe based Remeika compound Yb0.9FeGe3.1. More broadly, this perspective highlights how coupling real time structural probes with simple geometric descriptors provides a general pathway for designing synthesis conditions and accessing potentially metastable structure types in complex intermetallic systems.
