Numerical analysis of temperature fields and heat fluxes during grinding of metals
A novel surface processing technique, ultrasonic-assisted surface mechnical grinding treatment (U-SMGT), was proposed and applied to modify the surface micriostructure of the casting aluminum alloy (A380). Comprehensive post-process chracterization techniques including 3D profilometry, optical microscope, scanning electric microscopy (SEM), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) were carried out to investigate the surface morphology and microstructure of the processed region (PR). It was found that a surface layer of grain refinement with a thickness of about 50 µm was formed. In the as-received base material (BM), large clusters of dendritic eutectic phase with a size of approximately 20 µm were isolated by α-Al matrix. Nano-indentation tests showed that hardness of the eutectic and α-Al in the as-received BM was 2.15 GPa and 1.2 GPa respectively. After U-SMGT, the large dendritic eutectic phase was broken down into much fine particles with an average size of 0.57 µm. These fine particles were uniformly distributed into the α-Al matrix. Nano-indentation measurement exhibited a hardness of 2.27 GPa within the processed region. The overall high hardness in the processed region is a result of the pinning effect of uniformly distributed fine dendrites and grain refinement of Al-matrix.
The ability to controllably desolvate a crystal-solvate system in a step-wise fashion through polymer-assisted grinding is demonstrated by varying the type and proportion of polymer agent used.
A novel biomass production system, integrating the co-harvesting and co-storage of moist corn grain and stover, promises a reduction in delivered feedstock costs. In this innovative method, the dry grain traditionally utilized for feed or biofuel production will now be processed at a considerably greater moisture content. The adoption of this approach may necessitate a substantial redesign of existing material handling infrastructure to effectively accommodate the handling and storage of moist grain after processing by milling or grinding. A comprehensive study was conducted to quantify the physical properties of this grain after processing with a knife processor or a hammermill. The geometric mean particle size, bulk and tapped density, sliding angle, material coefficient of friction, and discharged angle of repose were quantified. Five grain treatments, either fermented or unfermented, and having different moisture contents, were used. After processing, the moist, fermented ground grain exhibited a significantly smaller particle size compared to the dry grain. Additionally, both moist processed grains resulted in a decreased bulk density and increased material sliding angle, friction coefficient, and angle of repose. The examined metrics collectively suggest that handling, mixing, and storing moist ground grain will pose significant challenges compared to conventional dry ground grain. This increased difficulty may lead to substantially higher costs, a crucial factor that must be carefully considered when evaluating the overall economics of implementing this new biomass production system using combined harvesting and storage of corn grain and stover.
Metallurgical microsamples are held in a fixture which rotates the sample across a rotating grinding wheel. The dual rotation results in a level, flat surface on the sample.
Multisurface fixture with a tool holder permits accurate grinding and finishing of right and left hand single point threading tools. All angles are ground by changing the fixture position to rest at various references angles without removing the tool from the holder.
Machining, grinding, and cutting operations in metal removal study using titanium and alloys
Manual combines the important and controlling factors for the proper selection and use of diamond stones for cutting and dressing grinding wheels. This manual is a compilation of empirical data and incorporates an original companion treatise on the physical descriptions of the diamond stones, their grading, and their applications.
Elastomeric sleeve supported on a threaded mandrel automatically centers cylindrical castings for grinding or turning. By expanding the diameter of the sleeve with pressure against the ends, the casting becomes rigidly supported and the surfacing operation can be completed.

Role of chemical reactions in comminution mechanism of ductile metals into ultrafine powders by grinding
Electro-chemical grinding technique has rotation speed control, constant feed rates, and contour control. Hypersonic engine parts of nickel alloys can be almost 100% machined, keeping tool pressure at virtual zero. Technique eliminates galling and permits constant surface finish and burr-free interrupted cutting.
A plug-in-and-grind formalism is derived for calculating the gravitational waves emitted by any system with weak internal gravitational fields. If the internal fields have negligible influence on the system's motions, then the formalism reduces to standard linearized theory. Whether or not gravity affects the motions, if the motions are slow and internal stresses are weak, then the new formalism reduces to the standard quadrupole-moment formalism. In the general case the new formalism expresses the radiation in terms of a retarded Green's function for slightly curved spacetime, and then breaks the Green's-function integral into five easily understood pieces: direct radiation, produced directly by the motions of the sources; whump radiation, produced by the the gravitational stresses of the source; transition radiation, produced by a time-changing time delay (Shapiro effect) in the propagation of the nonradiative, 1/r field of the source; focussing radiation produced when one portion of the source focusses, in a time-dependent way, the nonradiative field of another portion of the source, and tail radiation, produced by backscatter of the nonradiative field in regions of focussing.
Grinding tool installed on conventional milling machine cuts precise cavities in foam blocks. Method is well suited for prototype or midsize production runs and can be adapted to computer control for mass production. Method saves time and materials compared to bonding or hot wire techniques.

Si3 N4 powder (amorphous, alpha-, and beta-Si3 N4) was mixed with MeOH containing 8.87 mol. % H2O and ground. The NH3 generation rapidly increased after a grinding time of 100 hours. Silicon nitride sintered material was chosen as one of the high temperature, high strength structural materials and studies of the control of the raw material powder, preparation of the sintered body (finding the right assistant, hot press, high pressure sintering, fracture toughness and oxidation at high temperature were performed.
The results are presented of a four phase MM&T program to define, develop, and evaluate an improved inspection system for spiral bevel gears. The improved method utilizes a multi-axis coordinate measuring machine which maps the working flank of the tooth and compares it to nominal reference values stored in the machine's computer. A unique feature of the system is that corrective grinding machine settings can be automatically calculated and printed out when necessary to correct an errant tooth profile. This new method eliminates most of the subjective decision making involved in the present method, which compares contact patterns obtained when the gear set is run under light load in a rolling test machine. It produces a higher quality gear with significant inspection time and cost savings.
